The ten or so others out there who have read this monster are probably experiencing a facial tic at my suggestion that it be required reading for all who design software. Its not a quick read, but its definately a page turner. I couldn't put it down.

I'm serious.

For me, a guy with a solid background in networking and systems architecture but without the classical human factors education required for intelligent product design this one document did a far better job of firmly rooting me in the basics than anything else.

Mad props to Norman and Neilsen for pointing me in this direction in the first place. But with this book I finally felt "full."

There were a solid list of findings I'd never heard of until I'd opened this book. Not only did this book introduce me to these sorts of things, it also illustrated them to me. I walked away understanding.

Like all of my other faves, this book is opened often. I've bought many copies for friends (with friends like me...) and I reference it often.

Its notable that the most leading edge work today related to this topic is being driven by the same guys who wrote this book so long ago. Its among my top five most suggested books for those I know who want to take their design to the next level.

Most of us who have written GUI design books gained much of our knowledge of human-computer interaction from reading this early book. This book, though little known outside of academic Human-Computer Interaction circles, is one of the most heavily-cited books in the field. It is *the* classic source.

Designing human-computer interfaces is still an art, learned best by creating many interfaces and carefully observing how real users interact with them. However, there are many tools from cognitive psychology that, if understood and applied, can yeild at least two benefits. First, by learning what is known about how humans operate, you can avoid many pitfalls in design. Second, you can make quantitative design decisions.

This book, though nearly 20 years old, contains much essential material that is unknown to many practitioners in the field! If you are designing interfaces, on the Web, for PCs, or for information appliances, you should read and understand the basic material in this book, which can never go out of date as long as humans use keyboards and mice with their hands and scan the screen with their eyes.

My own recent book, The Humane Interface, is -- in many aspects -- just following in the footsteps of this pathbreaking, pioneering, and important work.

Radical Therapy: Surrender To Love And Heal Yourself In Seven Sessions (Not Seven Years) is based on the tenet that infinite love is the absolute constant of the Universe. Psychologist and counselor Allen Roland presents the ultimate self-healing through surrender to the Unified Field theory of love for improved relationships, an open heart, and interpersonal unity. A profound self-help manual that dares to be radically different, Radical Therapy is especially recommended for those seeking to recover from childhood trauma, improve adult relationships, enhance their own sense of worth, and reestablish an ability to experience and enjoy the simple pleasures life has to offer.

Jeff Hutner, Editor of the New Paradigm Digest said it best for me:

More than a book, Radical Therapy is a path to reconnecting to our soul's wholeness; a simple, elegant, effective and profound healing tool. More importantly, Radical Therapy is a way into the underlying Unified Field of Love that lies beyond the pain of the separation of our original state and the constant defense of the self-created ego prison most of us inhabit. In this breathtaking tour-de-force, Allen L. Roland, PhD, delivers simple truths that leap off the pages into your mind, heart and soul. Partaking in your own Radical Therapy assists in the penetration of long forgotten territory accessed through embracing our pain and surrendering to the exquisite field of love we have held ourselves from experiencing at great cost individually and collectively.

Radical Therapy goes where no therapy has gone before and delivers. Not content to promote more co-dependent therapist-client relationships that go on for months or years, Allen Roland is a wise teacher, coach, therapist and friend whose process is a proven path to liberation and discovery of our unique role in the unfolding story of life. Hundreds of his clients have made the journey he provides in this guide to self liberation. He proves once and for all that enlightenment is truly an inside job and that by ending our quest for answers from outside sources we may find our own truth.

This is the book we have been waiting for. It goes beyond all the wonderful partial answers and goes to the heart of the matter which it turns out is love. Drawing on the work of Einstein, Jung, and Chardin and sharing personal stories that describe liberated moments and states in his life and the lives of others, Roland provides a clear understanding that is the foundation of his powerful work with clients.

Were I to recommend one book that should be read by everyone, it would be Radical Therapy. Should it find the widespread audience it deserves, those liberated individuals could impact a world deeply out of touch with itself, filled with shadow projections that threaten our very existence. Liberated of our self-imposed prisons, connected to the Unified Field of Love and our unique part in the unfolding plan of humanity, non-linear, synchronistic, quantum events might unfold literally altering humanity's path towards inner peace, peace on earth and our co-creation of heaven on earth. It's a possibility worth our attention.

I pray this book reaches a worldwide audience in the millions thirsty for its deep truth and wisdom. Perhaps it will not just speak to those on the path, but those who are most blocked, most afraid to face their shadows and deep seated pain-people in places of power whose decisions usually help to continue the separation but could potentially liberate themselves and the world if they are willing to do the work of Radical Therapy. For this book is not just a prescription for individual transformation but that of the collective soul.

In the meantime, as individuals, we can reconnect with the loving place we all came from, alone, with a friend or therapist.and in only seven, two-hour sessions!

If you are reading this review, it is not an accident. Trust that you have connected with a long forgotten place in yourself and the world that seeks expression now. In this very moment, don't hesitate, go to origins website (originpress.com) and read more about this wonderful book and, if it resonates and you are truly ready to embark on the most difficult and powerful undertaking of your life, you may order your passport to a new world. If you are ready to surrender your old patterns and dive into the Unified Field of Love Allen illuminates, you can rest assured this is a journey you will not return from as the person who embarked upon it. You will never be the same. You will die to your old self like a snake shedding its skin, a caterpillar transformed into a butterfly or a pollywog who transforms into a frog and in that conscious dying you will be free at last to be your authentic self and give your special gift to a world awaiting it.

Once alive and glowing in the Unified Field of Love, you will act as a mirrored catalyst to others in your family, your work environment, school, or community, a living invitation to take their own sacred journey, And in so doing, you will be connecting with the deepest aspect of your Self, others and the Unified Field of Love that animates all life in all dimensions, which will in turn, be amplified and accelerated again and again resulting in more and more connections of the field to itself leading to the possibility of conscious evolution and the materialization of the Unified Field of Love as Heaven on Earth.

Enjoy the ride....

Well, this may be my favorite of the three titles Vicki Allen currently has out. The Return was AWESOME!! Filled with Allen's trademark humor, romance and enough twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat, especially one near the end.

It was fun seeing the For Molly characters in a grown-up light and to witness development of some of the previously minor characters like Scotty and Will Moreau. And of course, revisiting Doug is enough to make anybody's day.

All in all, I loved it!! Can't wait for The Other Brother.

Vicki Allen's novel, The Return, is the story of Ashely Stewart, a divorced woman who thought she had found a tranquil place to raise her child and lasting happiness with her second marriage. But a dark threat looms just beyond her sight, threatening all she holds dear, for the man who nearly destroyed her sanity years ago is back. Also highly recommended is Vicki Allen's first book in this emotionally gripping series: For Molly

I was hooked on page 1! I couldn't put it down and finished it in less than a day! Ms. Allen has the ability to get and keep your interest in the story, then POW! surprising you by throwing tragedy into the lives of the characters you have grown to love! At one point I even threw the book on the bed and shouted "I hate you!" to Ms. Allen for allowing so much grief to hit the characters. I can't explain why, but I really bonded with the main character. Reading "For Molly" first will give you more background and insight to the characters in "The Return". A must read for teenagers and older!

Set the hook! Oh sorry, I did not see you there. That is one big rainbow trout! A River Dream begins with a boy name Mark who is sick in bed and cannot go outside. His Uncle Scott sends him a fly fishing box with all his best flies in it. When he opens it, all the flies fly out and head out the window. I love this book because I love to go fly fishing with my dad. I would think the theme is sometimes dreams can feel like real life. Well that's all folks and if you like to fly fish and like happy endings, I recommend this book. Hey are you going to keep the trout? No, I like to leave the river the way it was. by The Great ANJ (Aaron J)

Mark, a boy who is ill, receives a small box of fishing flies from his uncle in the mail. The flies become mayflies that lure him out his city bedroom window into a mountain river landscape. He takes a boat up the river and sees his uncle, Scott. He teaches Mark lessons of fishing and life. The ethnicity of the boy and his uncle is not clear. It is a magical story showing an Asian American family just being normal people. The understated multicultural message is refreshing and the illustrations are dreamily, realistic looking watercolors. A River Dream is one of my favorite books. Karen Woodworth Roman, Librarian, East Asian Children's Books

One of Lady Antonia Fraser's best historical biographies
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2003-11-07
This is possibly one of Fraser's best historical biographies. Charles II, king of the glorious Restoration Period in English history, was a figure of legendary proportions, daring, physically commanding, surviving times of great danger after Cromwell's rule, living in tumultuous times of great scientific discovery, literature and some not-very successful wars against the Dutch.

The backdrop of Restoration society is fascinating, bawdy yet considering Shakespeare's plays too crude, wildly sexual, a time of tremendous change in England after the demise of the Tudors. It was a golden age of art and literature and the King was a dramatic figure, enjoying the embraces of comedian Nell Gwynn as well as a number of other famous mistresses, researching in his own laboratory, hunting, racing and swimming. His death at 55 seems a young age, but for those times, he survived to a respectable age and unlike many other kings, died in his bed. If you are interested in Restoration period literature, this is a fun read to set the backdrop for that interesting and fruitful period of European history.

Charles The Debonaire

Review Date: 2003-01-12
King Charles II, never short of female admirers during his lifetime, certainly has found another fan in Antonia Fraser. The man who fathered fourteen illegitimate children, yet failed to sire an heir to his throne, was tall, charming, and in his own strange way, handsome - although, as Fraser tells us, his olive complexion and Medici looks were not considered to be conventionally good looking. Despite contemporary denials, he was also a convinced Catholic - even though he only formally confessed on his deathbed. Fraser takes us through the many wild turns of Charles' life - early years as the established heir apparent in the court of Charles I, teen years as a minor player in the English Civil War, hero of the siege of Worcester, months as fugitive from the Cromwellians following his father's beheading (and Britain's most wanted man), early adulthood in exile in France and Flanders, glorious Restoration in 1660 and subsequently King of a mini-golden era. While this is by no means an uncritical biography, Fraser argues persuasively that Charles was the master politician of his generation, and she seduces us into cheering on Charles' various attempts, late in his reign, to govern without Parliament. Fraser doesn't assume prior knowledge of English history, so is a great starting point for a first-time encounter with the English Restoration period, yet Fraser's erudition provides enough satisfaction too for seasoned history lovers.

This book has been an invaluable resource for the script I am working on now, and I know it will be worn and dog-eared before too long as I refer back to it over and over again on future projects.

What You Really Need to Know to Write, Sell and Survive as a Hollywood
Screenwriter.

Everyone in the industry -- from the just-hired "D-girl" to the
most powerful mogul -- is by now familiar with "the three-act paradigm" and
knows its rules and structure. Having sold screenplays to major studios and
read hundreds of others, Ury has developed his own set of rules and
guidelines for today's screenplays. Ury covers everything from developing a
marketable screenplay, to creating viable villains, to writing effective set
pieces, to how to please professional readers and studio execs. Most
importantly, Ury's advice is a no-nonsense analysis of the latest techniques
that will help you craft your own first-rate screenplays that sell.

The book is divided into four sections:
* Concepts in Writing and Storytelling
* Mechanics of Writing
* Secrets of Great Selling Scripts
* How to Pitch and Sell your Screenplay.

Whether you are a seasoned pro or a novice, Secrets of the Screen Trade will
help you improve your writing: You'll learn how to create truly
unforgettable characters, develop better structure for all movie genres, and
get the inside track to selling your screenplay to Hollywood.

Allen B. Ury is a staff writer for Fade In magazine. He has more than
fifteen books to his credit as well as scores of magazine articles. As a
screenwriter, he has sold several projects to major film studios,
including Disney and New Line Cinema. He has analyzed and written
coverage for well over 500 screenplays.

Successful author and screenwriter Allen B. Ury presents Secrets Of The Screen Trade: From Concept To Sale, a practical guide to not only creating a screenplay that is coherent and salable, but also how to get it sold without getting ripped off. Writing tips, tricks, and techniques include a sample of overused premises to avoid (such as mysteries where the protagonist is the murderer), ten screenplay writing rules and when to break them (the first act should not occupy more than a quarter of the screenplay, unless there are so many funny jokes/action-packed events that the story is not dragging), and all too common errors to avoid, such as writing "at last he understands" in the screenplay description - the sure mark of an amateur, since "understanding" is an internal emotion and a screenplay must focus on external facets that a director can work with. Secrets Of The Screen Trade goes on to give the reader the basic low-down on submitting scripts, a process that has changed little in fifty years, and sharply warns writers not to be taken in by scam artists - such as agents who charge a flat rate instead of a sales commision, or internet sites that pretend they're doing you a favor by promoting your work online, when no serious film producer browses websites for his next movie script. A wittily written and highly recommended overview for anyone interested in the screenwriting trade.

Allen Boyer's mastery of the written word is quite apparent and his ability to entertain and bring life to this important historical figure makes the work a true joy to read. A paradigm for current and potential missionaries
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-23
Roland Allen's book, written in the 1920s as a sequel for his book, "Missionary Methods: St. Paul's or Ours?", stands alone and was way ahead of its time. The book looks at the methods and structure of the modern missionary movement and shows how it fails to follow Biblical standards and models, and as a result stunts the natural growth of the church. Allen's treatment is from an Anglican perspective, but it is applicable to the Christian church at large. Mission organizations, denominations and individual churches, along with current missionaries and those who are being called by God to full-time missionary service, will definitely benefit from reading this book.

Some sections, particularly the one regarding parachurch missionary organizations, will challenge your thinking. We are so immersed in Western thought and structures, that we superimpose those concepts onto the church and our missionary organizations, thinking that they are biblical. But the Gospel is supra-cultural; we need Allen's corrective to change our way of seeing things.

We are seeing in our day exactly what Allen says in this book: the explosive growth of the Church in Africa, in China, etc., through the freeing of the church and believers to shoulder the job of sharing their faith, without the "professional" to do the job for them.

There is one area with which I would disagree with Allen: he contends that the Bible says nothing about financial support for pastors, that it should be done solely by unpaid pastors and elders. The passages where both Christ and Paul say "the laborer is worthy of his wages" (Luke 10:7 and 1 Timothy 5:17-18), Paul's receiving funds from other churches to preach the Gospel to new places (2 Corinthians 11:8), and that those who proclaim the Gospel should get their living from the Gospel, that is, from those to whom they minister (1 Corinthians 9:14) are sufficient to show that pastors should be supported in their work by those in the congregation, and that should not be a burden to the people if they are to be good stewards. But that is a minor point of contention.

In sum, Allen's main premise is sound, and I would urge anyone interested in seeing God's kingdom expand in this world to give this book serious time and thought.

The Title Says It All

This book, originally published in the 1920's, is still used today in a wide range of missionary circles. This book was written for TODAY. Although the book is written in the context of cross-cultural church planting, it is applicable for any church that wants to grow. The title of the book is very appropriate.

This book is not for everyone. If you think the state of the Church is right where it needs to be, I'd recommend that you stay away from this book as it my ruffle your feathers. The Bible says that when Jesus taught that he spoke with authority (Matthew 7:29). This book has that kind of air about it.

This book is not an easy read nor for the faint of heart. It took me weeks to get through this book but it was well worth my time - and anyone's time who is passionate about seeing the Spontaneous Expansion of Christ's Church in our generation.

He shows some attachment to his own denomination's political structure, and he uses language which we consider outdated (seeing as the book was written over 70 years ago), but otherwise he preaches an appropriately "modern" message of mere (and powerful!) Christianity. All I can say is: Get book. Read book. Compare with Bible. Then get out there and *do* something!
