It has been years since my parents died and I am very fortunate that no-one I am close to is seriously ill, so I really didn't have a reason to read this book, but I was intrigued by the title.

This is a wonderful book! It gives so much to the reader. It expands your heart and I found it giving me a certain feeling of grace - not that I have been spared - but a feeling of grace from reading about the wonderful people in this book.

Yes, it's full of wonderful, noble people, but these people are also blessed with a sense of humor and class.

I don't know if it would help someone who has never had a sense of humor, but I am positive that it would help anyone who has laughed at least once in their life.

Mr. Klein's approach is not condescending or "let's laugh at the victim" style at all. It is warm and joyous and a blessing to anyone who reads it.

This book will not bring you down! It may open a path of communication for you. I cannot say enough about this book.

Although I have no life threatening disease, I have suffered through horrible bouts of depression and this book was a God-send because it made me LAUGH! I am looking forward to reading his other books!

I purchased this book and read it after the deaths of three immediate family members (son, father, mother-in-law) occurred within a year's time. I reached a point wherein I asked myself, "How have I been able to cope with all the stress this year, and why am I coming unglued now?" The answer is in the title of the book. What helped me throughout the year was my wit. I realized that I needed to nurture my sense of humor as much as I needed food, clothing, shelter, love and prayer.

Through Allen Klein's book I discovered that, in the face of trauma, humor is as much a saving grace as are spiritual/religious beliefs.

I heartily recommend this book for anyone who is facing a terminal illness or who has a loved one who has a terminal illness, as well as for those who are at least a year past the death of their loved one (unless they have an extremely accessible wit).

Laughter is excellent medicine. Buy this book, but then remember to take the medicine! Laughing in the face of death, or finding light when one feels that life is dark, is a challenging task. It takes courage to search thoroughly and find humor's rainbow behind the dark clouds of grief.

A treasure--for caregivers, students, and you

Years ago, I learned about the work of Norman Cousins, then editor of "The Saturday Review." My late father was a real fan of that magazine and told me about Cousin's then radical ideas about how humor could help healing. His work is covered in his 1979 book, Anatomy of an Illness (Norton). Since then, I've had an interest in humor and how it helps us cope with the trials and tribulations of life.

Allen Klein has taken the concept a step further, exploring in great detail how humor helps us cope with death. As I began the book, I read about Klein's experience with the death of his father. Thoughts of my father's death came creeping into my consciousness. Do I want to read this book? I continued reading, and I'm glad I did. This book is a fascinating sociological study of humor and death. It's very well done, so well that the book could qualify as a college textbook as well as a very interesting read . . . and even a valuable guidebook for people working in hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, or caring for a loved one.

The organization of The Courage to Laugh was obvious, and made the book easier to read, understand, and absorb. Part I answers the question, "Is Death Too Serious for Humor?" with four strong background chapters. The second part of the book, Seeing Demise Thru Humorous Eyes, is filled with an amazing collection of wit and understanding from a wide variety of sources. I became so engaged with this material, that I couldn't put the book down. I just kept reading! I also enjoyed the last part of the book, Leave' Em Laughing, that looks at the subject through the eyes of those who are dying.

Highly recommended for anyone dealing with death and dying or studying the topic. If you're a student of humor, this book is a treasure.

After having read and loved one of Allen's other books, "The Healing Power of Humor," I read this book as soon as it came out. Before reading "The Courage to Laugh," I never thought about connecting courage with laughter. Now I never separate the two concepts! In this book, Allen refers to clowns and their courage. I was not a "Caring Clown" (a clown that works specifically in health care) when I first read this book. I am now. Some days I need to muster a lot of courage to connect with people who are old and dying. One thing I learned from this book is that even a nanosecond of relief from pain through humor can make a profound difference is a person's life. A second idea (of many) I've embraced is the spiritual component of laughter and mirth. Thanks to you, Allen, my spirit is soaring!

So Many Heroes
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-18
Much of our popular culture defines heroism as laughing in the face of death. Square-jawed heroes and voluptuous heroines in books and movies show us what they're made of as they make light of their impending demise.

Allen Klein writes about heroes, death, and laughter, too. Klein's heroes aren't cartoon characters, they're ordinary people. They are you and me. Klein's heroes haven't been chained in the path of an onrushing train. They're teathered to an IV during chemo-therapy or living with a chronic condition that won't kill them but just make life more difficult as time goes by. Klein's heroes have one thing in common; their ability to laugh at themselves and their situations. They've also given others The gift of laughing with them.

Allen Klein has done a remarkable thing. Rather than celebrate heroism by elevating it out of our grasp, he celebrates it by bringing it to a level where its accessible to all of us. Klein's heroism is facing our time here with dignity, optimism, and a sense of humor in spite of an uncertain future. That's living. That's dying. That's the point.

More often than not, breakthroughs only occur after a long period of effort and preparation. This book highlights that fact through succinct and helpful profiles of successful individuals. Each section can be read alone, independent of the others, although the thread of focus, attention to detail and persistence is always there in the background as a lesson to be learned and continually reinforced. In my view, one of the better self-help and self-motivating books around.

I truly enjoyed reading this book and I turn to it often for advice in many areas of my life. This book is written very much like the Chicken Soup For the Soul series. Several authors giving advice and ideas from their experiences. Something for everyone. The best part is that it is without all of the fluff most books fill themselves up with for the first couple chapters. Each author has a few pages to himself or herself and they get right to the point with their concepts and methods for life, business, and happiness. I received this book as a gift and I'd recommend it to anyone else.

I've been in the wholesaling business since 92 and have had many ups and downs. 9/11 almost wiped me out and it forced me to run my business much better. Several authors of this book gave me ideas to use that have significantly helped my business stop losing money and start turning a nice profit with which I can support my family including 6 kids.

Just about every chapter was well written, but not all applied directly to my business. I'm sure some would benefit you more than me.

I found these to be the best authors in the book for me.

Brian Tracy because he helped me set clear goals and his approach got me motivated to try it. Unlike the usual goal setting I have done where I wouldn't implement much of it.

Maria Carlton because she helped me gain ideas how to run my family business more smoothly and without the nonsense and personal conflicts that comes with doing business with family (and especially in-laws!)

Jacquelyn Gernaey for her review of SWOT which I remembered from college but hadn't done lately.

Mark Victor Hansen also for his goal setting ideas which I use.

Jacquie Damgaard for her 15 communication mistakes that will destroy your business. I admit I was guilty of #2 assuming that saying something once is enough.

Michael Cannon for his focus on what my buyers want and not what I want to sell them. Retailers are fussy these days and I have to be more tolerant of their needs. I now picture their stores on a busy saturday and try to envision how my products will sit on their shelves.

Chris Philippi for his chapter on how retailers can see increases in sales just by rearranging their stores, improving their signage, offering discounts to customers when buying in volume, and for his focus on how customer service reps should behave and act towards customers. I actually think I benefitted more from his chapter because it allowed me to share these ideas with my retail clients and they appreciated it. I also updated my own POS signage and have watched retail sales of my products jump by over 14%.

A great book overall. I think they had the right idea making it appeal to so many people.

Chris Philippi, one of the authors of Create The Business Breakthrough You Want, gave me an autographed copy of this book at a speaking engagement he gave for an audience of retailers. His chapter, "Increase Retail Sales Quickly & Easily (And Without Spending a Dime on Advertising)" supports the teachings of his seminar ... which is that the greatest amount of hidden profit is in your store everyday, walking around ... YOUR CUSTOMERS!

Chris discussed the strategy of "conversion ratio" which is how many shoppers make a purchase out of every 100 that walk through the door. Foolishly I believed we must have sold everybody. Using his test I discovered we only sell slighly more than 30%. We've taken measurs to improve this ASAP.

And now we sell to more than 40%. (This is resulted in more than a 30% jump in sales!)

The next big strategy Chris Philippi helped us with was how to increase our average sale. It has consistenly been around $40 for our new store and around $28 at our old store.

Using Chris Philippi 's strategies of bundling complimentary items together, volume discounting, improved signage, and more effective POS displays, we've watched our average sale jump by more than 25% in each store.

This increase in my business has served an extra bonus as well. I've cut back on much of the advertising I felt was being wasteed. I no longer do those coupon packs that failed to bring much result and only advertise in one newspaper and not the others anymore.

Total in the 6 months since using the program designed by Philippi Marketing & Associates, my retail stores have achieved an increase in sales of close to one million dollars.

Needless to say I highly recommend this book. Retail store owners should skip right to page 186.

This amazing book contains both the essence & the practical methodologies of the best business mentors/coaches. As opposed to other books, where you can normally find only one long theory that doesn't necessarily fits your business, here you can have a good idea over a wide range of proven methodologies. The main strength of this book is that you can easily implement the methodologies that you find to be best suitable for your own business, since the strategies are very down-to-earth and normally includes several examples. Whether you work with a coach or you are a coach, or just looking for creative and practical methods to bring amazing results to your own business - this is the book for you.

I've been using this cookbook for a few years and checked to see if she'd written anything new. The recipes are delicious. The cooking instruction is clear. She adds a special touch with her comments that make me feel that I have an expert guiding me in the kitchen. This American cook loves Delia Smith! My family, guests and neighbors love the recipes I prepare with this book and Delia's Winter Cookbook.

If you are frustated by reading colourful and glossy recipes that turn out disasterous the delicious Delia is for you. Her recipes always work. Her UK television programme back room staff ensure that, as most if not all are demonstrated on TV, and even the most acknowledged cooks in the UK will tell you that it will, yes will, work the first time. My wife, a proffesional cook, makes no excuse for always having her volumes at hand for that sudden emergancy. Typical of the main stream of modern British cuisine in the mid 1990s, full of the feeling and flavours of that oh so elusive English Summer.

Delia is one of those television personalities who you really would like to have as a friend. Her books are extremely personable and can literally be read aloud - gives you that "Delia is in the house" feeling. The Summer and Winter Collections are Superb books. Also check out How to Cook One and Two. Excellent. Now, where can I buy the How to Cook video collection?

I purchased this book and she's been reading it for the past week and says it has answered every question she had about diabetes and how she should be eating. She's going to be talking to a dietitian soon and wanted to have a general understanding of the disease. She highly recommends this book to anyone with diabetes.

I very much enjoyed Dinosaur Memories, which while reading, conjured many fond recollections about my youthful years of learning about paleontology - a science which isn't only about dinosaurs - as noted by the authors. Also, I found their discussions about prehistoric mammals and fantasy dinosaurs of science fiction literature enlightening. That chapter about dinosaur toy collectors & figure collecting is a scream! I've been down many of those same roads that Debus & Debus have been but still found their personal insights & anecdotes most refreshing. Kudos!

A Consequence-Centered (Not Punishment-Centered) Approach to Handing Student Misbehavior
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-23
I once attended a seminar by author Richard Curwin and found him to be an affable fellow with good insights to classroom management. This book contains many practical tips in this regard (review based on the 1989 edition). Curwin believes that classroom discipline is a social contract that should jointly be planned by teacher and students. This includes small details. For instance, teacher and students should come up with a consequence for dealing with an infraction in which the teacher doesn't know who did it, but not one that stigmatizes the entire class.

Curwin notes that the student population breaks down 80%/15%/5% in terms of near-complete compliance, varied compliance, and chronic non-compliance to rules. He summarizes the challenge facing teachers: "In many junior and senior high classes, 5 to 10 minutes of class time is wasted at the beginning of class trying to focus the attention of students. At least another 5 to 10 minutes is directed toward off-task behavior (students not paying attention, using put downs, arguing) during class time. This amounts to minimally 10 to 20 minutes of a 45- to 50-minute class period doing things other than what you are paid to do and want to do: teach!" (p. 53).

Punishment is centered on retribution, and can violate the dignity of the child. Consequences, in contrast, are corrective. The distinction between the two is not simply semantic. Let's illustrate. A child who didn't bring in homework can be punished by writing 100 times "I will do my homework". How much better to have the child have the consequence of writing out a plan for budgeting his/her time so that the homework gets done? For hitting another person, the child may be punished by having to stay after school. The offender should instead have the consequence of coming after school and writing out a plan for expressing his/her anger at others without hitting.

Lee Canter believes that the identical set of consequences should be imposed on anyone who violates a classroom rule. Curwin, in contrast, believes that the teacher should enjoy the flexibility of different consequences for the same infraction. This allows the teacher to avoid choosing between appearing to be rigid and being inconsistent. For instance, if a child didn't do homework owing to a home emergency, he/she can face the consequence of a parent-teacher conference. If he/she didn't do homework for any excusable reason, he/she can face the consequence of coming after school.

Power struggles can be avoided by not "taking the hook". If a child says: "You can't make me!", the teacher should ignore it, but then privately tell the child that he/she is expected to follow through.

Curwin includes many unconventional ideas for solving discipline problems. For instance, a teacher had a chronic problem with students throwing paper airplanes. She came up with the idea of a bloc of classroom time when students would build paper airplanes and launch them--provided that not a single paper airplane was made in the interim. It worked!

It gives you ways to deal with negative situtations that allows the child to walk away feeling like they can be a better person and they will be!

Towne has given us a firsthand account of many of the significant American battles of WWII from a combat medic's perspective. This memoir is a must read for anyone interested in getting a factual historical glimpse of WWII.

This is one of the few books that deal with the combat medic. For the most part the medics roll is just a foot note in other works but this writing is all about the medics of the 1st Division.

Sgt. Towne basically took his day reports and added his commentary to give a more complete picture of the day to day activities of Company B. It is not a polished historical read like you would expect form Ambrose, but I feel Sgt Towne's perspective (as a true to life, been there done that) gives him the view point that other historians could only wish they had.

This book was of particular interest to me; do to the fact that my father was as a platoon leader in Company B, from April to August 1944. His name was briefly mentioned when he was wounded on August 6th (my father was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his action on this day). I was able to locate the general movements of my father but disappointingly not specific actions. Many of Sgt. Towne's commentaries refer to other platoons but not by name; however I feel that I did gain a lot of information that is not located in any other writing.

I would recommend this book to all.

I thought this book captured the essence of the tumult of three years of combat. I was spellbound by the way relationships developed and deepened. The author raised the question of why men respond so differently to the trauma of combat and war. A well-written story.

Understanding my father

My father served with the author and is in a few of the pictures and anecdotes. I have a greater understanding and appreciation of what war is all about. Dad did not want to talk about what he saw and experienced when he was alive. He shared his scrapbooks on a few occasions, dodging some questions that were too close to him.

When Dad died, I sent a letter to "the outfit" as he referred to the men with whom he served. I had some wonderful letters and calls from men who had shared a part of his life that I never knew. But, I now know better from reading this book, the courage and determination that these men showed just to survive the day to day part of the war. The horrors that these men shared needed to be buried until someone could put them into a context for the rest of us to truly understand and appreciate them. The author has done that in a vivid, yet compassionate manner. Everyone needs to read this book. Thank you, Mr. Towne for revealing this part of the war to the rest of us.

If you want to learn what it was really like fighting to save lives with the U.S. Medical Corps in World War II, give this newly released personal account by Allen N. Towne a try. Mr. Towne relates his five years'service as a frontline medic with the First Infantry Division in North Africa, Sicily, Omaha Beach, as well as France, Belgium, and Germany. He carries you along with him as a former college student who finds himself in the thick of some of the war's bloodiest battles. You will find it difficult not to read it straight through in one sitting.

Too much verbiage that isn't Seth

All the Seth books are worthwhile, arguably profound and life-changing, and this is no exception. At times Seth takes wing and, as usual, presents very original arguments ...at times with a concision and eloquence that itself suggests that Seth is an essence from another dimension (as he says he is). But the book suffers from too much comment (in footnotes and an epistle of an introduction) by Robert Butts, the husband of Jane Roberts and the person who actually produced the text dictated by Jane. Robert Butts seems not to realise that what he has to say is infinitely inferior to what Seth says...and yet Butts goes on at far too great length. Stick to Seth if you want the essence of these books.

Darwin had it wrong, and the Creationists also have it wrong

Well, perhaps "wrong" is too strong a word, since there are truths embedded in each of the belief systems (or theories, if you'd like). But Seth's more all-encompassing explanation -- best read if you've started out with other Seth books first like "Seth Speaks" -- is shattering in its implications. Once you get your mind around the entire framework of it, it's also absolutely the most logical explanation, too, in my opinion.

Both Darwin and the literal Bible interpreters (Creationists) were/are working through a set of filters and by default, a more limited awareness of the true nature of reality. Seth's explanation, even if you don't buy into it 100% on the first read, is nonetheless extremely fascinating.

Also a comment on the excess verbiage by Robert Butts: Yes, sometimes he goes on too long with details such as, "Jane woke from trance a bit groggy." But all of Butts' comments are in italics, and I've learned from reading the other Seth books to just fast-forward over the italics. It's not that big of a deal once you program yourself to do that.

Having read hundreds of books on the qualities of consciousness, there are NONE superior to Seth's. My first book on the subject back in the 1970's was Seth and still, though many are fabulous, none compare to the DEPTH of Seth.

Where do we come from and why are we here. This book deals with the origin of mankind and the creation of this world in dreams. I'd not recommend it if you do not know other Seth books, and also not if you are looking of ways of how to improve your life situation (get Nature of Personal Reality in that case). However, it's excellent if you enjoyed Seth Speaks and Unknown Reality.

Seth's masterwork

Seth at one point referred to this book as his masterpeice, the one that all of the others have been building up to. The concepts that he tries to get across here are actually pretty simple once you get your mind to thinking that way--it's a way of viewing oneself, the planet, and the interconnectedness of all relationships (sentiant and otherwise). All of his books are profound, so it would be redundant to say this one is too (but it is). A story within the book is Jane's rapid and dramatic physical deterioration, and Seth's dictation at times takes a back seat to Rob's records of her physical and mental state, and his notes about Three Mile Island and the Iran hostage crisis. When I reread, I will probably skip the notes and just read the dictation, if only to get a clearer flow.

This book is the first volume of a two volume set that took me over 20 years to research and write. As a child I was drawn to the magic of the ancient alphabets. At nine years old, I had already committed to memory the Greek alphabet. I was able to write in my child's hand the Egyptian hieroglyphic phonetic alphabet. I also copied out from an encyclopedia the Phoenician alphabet, and saw the connections between Egyptian, Phonecian, Greek, and Roman script, and how our own English alphabet of 26 letters evolved from the picture images of these ancient scripts (i.e, A was a bull, and B was a house). In the late 1960s I discovered the number values for the ancient Hebrew alphabet. I was fascinated by the concept that every letter of the alphabet had a different number value, and that the range of numbers spanned from 1 to 9 to 10 to 900 to 100 to 900. This revelation somehow triggered deeply within me past life remembrances of previously studying the sacred nature of the alphabet. From my first exposure to Hebrew, I searched out other cultures and other languages that were isopsephic (i.e., languages that use the letters of the alphabet as number value in addition to phonetic values). What really fascinated me was that any word in an isopsephic language could be measured and numbered by the number values of the letters composing that word. And if two words equalled the same number, they served as poetic metaphors to define the mystical nature of that specific number. As my research progressed, more and more languages unfolded, until I discovered languages in both the east and west that held this mystical property. When I finally recorded all of my research, my occult archaeological discoveries fell naturally to two books, one dealing with the eastern mysteries and one with the western mysteries. The Eastern Mysteries contains so much new material that have never seen print before in English. This includes the numbering of Sanskrit, including a key to the letters on the flower petals known as the chakras. The Tibetan alphabet is also deciphered for the first time, as well as the stroke count of the Chinese language based on Taoist Spirit practices. A key to the actual layout of the I Ching is also deciphered for the first time, and connected back directly to the stroke count of Chinese calligraphy. Beyond these rare discoveries the middle eastern languages of Cuneiform, Hebrew, and Arabic are fully deciphered. There are also many appendices to the 6 chapters in this first volume that offer additional insight into the number philosophy of the ancient world, including the number system of Gurdjieff and the ancient eastern elemental system known as the tattvas. This work, though highly detailed, is aimed at the lay person, and does not require any previous knowledge of any of the alphabets or symbolic systems. I would recommend this book alone, on the merits of the last chapter. For I have written the best possible explanantion of the I Ching that has yet to see print. For in my research with the I Ching over the last 30 years, I had discovered the key to all of its symbolism. That key is the 8 basic trigrams that make up the 64 hexagrams. Once the reader understands these 8 basic shapes, then all of the complex oracular vocabulary can be understood. The Western Mysteries should also be purchased, since the two volumes complement each other, and were originally written as one large volume.

This book and it's "Western Mysteries" companion contain extensive amounts of interesting and valuable information. They truly bring together so many of the fundamental aspects that are shared across cultures and disciplines. Even though the books may appear, at first glance, somewhat complex, their many, many entry points provide easy access for both casual reading and deep exploration.

Just 5"X6" this charming little book, inspired by A.A. Milne, makes an excellent gift. It has delightful illustrations and lots of sage advice from the beloved dreary donkey. Have a copy on hand for yourself to read on those days when you're feeling a bit sorry for yourself and are on the verge of becoming a whiner. It always makes me laugh at myself and there's nothing like a laugh to lift the gloom...but don't tell Eeyore. If you don't like this book just remember what Eeyore said, "Don't blame me."

...doesn't mean you're going to get any honey." That's kind of how I felt. This book, overall, wasn't quite as witty as I had anticipated. But then, don't the teachings of Eeyore the wise prepare us for such a moment?:) There were a few very cute quotes, but most of it was fluff. The art was most enjoyable, though, and I loved the book despite the fact that it fell short of my expectations. I wouldn't recommend Eeyore's (Gloomy) Little Instruction Book to just anyone. But the artwork and the few really good quotes, not to mention the beautiful binding and quality paper, make this book the perfect gift for every Eeyore fan; indeed, their library will not be complete without it!

This small book makes an appropriate gift for anybody who appreciates a nice laugh while reflecting on life. Each page takes you through some of the adversity and fortuity that Eeyore encountered in the A.A. Milne books. Cute quote: "When someone says `How-do-you-do,' just say that you didn't." It's remarkable regarding the optimism that comes from our beloved little donkey.
