It has been a long time since I have done marathon reading, but honestly I could not put this book down. it had more twists and turns than Chubby Checker. I started reding it Sunday until my husband drug me out of the house and woke up at 5 am Monday to finish it. I recommend this book to any one that wants to escape or know the real "Hollyweird". Peter Scott Harmyk is a gifted word crafter and will take you on a wild ride.

Well written and easy to read, Dawn Steel combines key events in her life with key strategies to make it in today's entertainment world. The book is humorous and enlightening. It may not be The Art of War, but it's a great read none-the-less. It's just too bad the book was so hard to find. No longer available as a new buy, it is readily available in the used book market. Although Dawn left us in 1997, her spirit lives on within each page read. A recommended read for those looking to learn the basic principals of succeeding in this industry.

Dawn Steel, Hollywood's first female movie mogul, died in Cedars-Mount Sinai Hospital on December 20, 1997,of a brain tumor after a long battle with cancer. She was 51. Steel was named president of Columbia in 1987, leaving two years later when Sony took over. Commenting on Steel's death in the New York Times, writer-director Nora Ephron said, "Dawn certainly wasn't the first woman to become powerful in Hollywood, but she was the first woman to understand that part of her responsibility was to make sure that eventually there were lots of other powerful women. ... The situation we have today, with a huge number of women in powerful positions, is largely because of Dawn Steel."

I happened upon Dawn Steel's book and fell for the title. She speaks honestly and with humor about her triumphs and her trials, demonstrating that to succeed, you must first take some risks. I was saddened to learn of her death a couple of years ago--she's someone I wish I'd known in person.

A Trip to Hollywood!

Review Date: 2005-03-10
They Can Kill You...But They Can't Eat You (Lessons From the Front) by Dawn Steel. Some might call this a book strictly for women...but it's not. Dawn Steel, former, first, and only woman who ever became president of Columbia Pictures, gives us a fast-paced peek into the world behind motion pictures, sharing so many names of stars, producers, directors, writers, who was and is the "in crowd," that you can't possibly grasp the magnitude of what it takes to have those new movies appear before us each week.

The book, according to the inside cover, was written "For every woman (or man) who knows there's a great person in there dying to escape, but lacks the confidence or tools to truly express oneself...for every woman trying to get out of the typing pool...for every woman who wants to be valued for cherishing her role as a mother...for corporate vice-presidents who are as sick as Dawn Steel was of wanting to be one of the boys...for every woman who, just as she conquers the next step, wonders, "so what do I do now?" Dawn Steel offers hard-won insights to help accelerate the trip, eliminate some of the angst and pain, and create a spirit of optimism and hope."

Dawn Steel's book is fun--it makes you cry, it makes you angry, it makes you cheer when she succeeds. It makes you sad when one more job is lost, but over it all, it makes you realize your own potential. You realize that others have had those wild entrepreneurial schemes, and that they have gone out and did them! Dawn sold amaryllis as "penis plants" and created the advertisement headline to "Grow Your Own Penis. All it takes is $6.98 and a lot of love." Now, when you read about someone who comes up with such ideas, you just got to love her...right?

Dawn's life is anything but normal and traditional. Her book opens as she overhears in the "second-floor ladies' room in the Administration Building at Paramount" that "She's dead." While her first reaction is to paraphrase Mark Train, "The reports of my death had been greatly exaggerated," she shares that it actually "took another six months for them to kill" her.

From Paramount to Penthouse, to Columbia, to selling her own ideas, Dawn tells all of us that we can survive anything--being fired, having someone come in over or under us in the corporate ladder and sabotage us, being chased out because of being pregnant, or being referred to as "The Queen of Mean" in newspapers.

The life of Dawn Steel started in 1946 and as her story is told, Dawn highlights for the reader what was happening at that time. These little references takes us back through our own lives and we live her life along with her as songs like "Zip-a-Dee-Do-Dah" that year, on through to Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" in 1987, play through our minds. She helps us recall how the last thirty or so of our lives have gone, and you find you quietly do a comparison of where you could be if you had dared to "risk."

Underlying the story line of her life, the glamour of working at major motion pictures and for "men's magazines," Dawn inserts, casually, but effectively, all the lessons learned in these fascinating arenas. So in the midst of learning about the problems of making the movies, Fatal Attraction or Flashdance, or while negotiating or going to events with Harrison Ford, John Travolta, Sylvester Stallone, Eddie Murphy, et. Al., Dawn drops in her sage advice, like:

Sometimes you have to accept that there are bosses and colleagues whom you can never turn around. Instead of going home frustrated and torturing yourself and the people around you, move on and find another way. There are people with whom you pass a point of no return and you should give up on them...

You can't let your competition sway you. On of the most important things I learned is that you must be willing not to get it. You must be willing to let go. Then it will come back to you...or

Set your boundaries ahead of time. Set your appetite ahead of time. Then be ready to let go...I learned my job by doing and watching...

As these little nuggets sink in, you realize that this book is about power, personal power. But after all she accomplished, Dawn Steel closes the book with an image..."I had this image of my mother. She was going off to work, dressed in one of her suits. She had to go to work. She had to take care of her family. She didn't have a job with a fancy title, or a plush office, or her own parking space. The guard didn't know her; in fact, there probably wasn't even a guard where she worked. She didn't have a hundred calls a day to define her status. She wasn't looking for anyone to rescue her. She wasn't looking for power. My mother did what had to be done because the power was already in her." And Dawn shares her own realization that she, too, didn't want to look for power anymore...that it had been there, inside her, all along.

This book makes you feel good. It's definitely written for those in the business world, but is written from such a personal slant, where even how potty training for your daughter is handled during the work day, that you don't realize until you've completed the book how it has elevated your spirits and challenged you to look at your life and use that power that is there within us.

Take a trip to Hollywood with Ms. Steel--you'll have a wonderful time!

This book contains more than just cocktail recipies, but also plenty of information on the main spirits and liquers (with mention to many specific brands) as well as a very brief guide to wines and beers. The reader will learn the history and production of many of these beverages. There is also a section on equipment needed for your own bar and some basic bartending techniques. The recipie section is full of vivid photographs to give the aspiring bartender a better idea of what the final product should look like. Stuart Walton is very knowledgeable about the different products and brands, and makes many reccomendations for serving drinks as well as foods that accompany them well. Although the book sometimes contains more pictures than information (as is the tendency among books from this publisher), it is overall a very good introductory source and is a worthy purchase at a low price.

This a good coffe table book to own, the appearance of the book is fabulous and the information in it is even more interesting. The guide has not only a long list of some of the best drinks but also how to make them, what goes well with them, what kind of glasses to use and a little history on the alcohol itself.
I've tried mixing several of the drinks and they came out fabulous.
***This book appears at the Bargain section of Borders a lot. It's usually less than 5 bucks.

"The Ultimate Book of Cocktails" is an amazing addition to the ever growing number of books about alcohol, alcohol mixing, and bartending. From the cover to the very last page, the entire thing has a very flashy, professional style, rife with literally hundreds of full color pictures, clearly displaying what each and every bottle or mixed drink should look like. The paper used is a high quality, heavy type that will stand the test of time, as well as all your spilled alcoholic concoctions.

This massive tome starts off with a brief, but highly informative, introduction to the history of all of alcohol's various forms. Several artifacts are shown to highlight whatever historical point is being made, such as a small statue dated around 2300 BC of an Egyptian woman mixing beer. All the information presented in the introduction is just a broad overview, though, as the real meat of the history is scattered throughout the book in every entry. Essentially every type of hard liquor that could possibly be imagined is presented in all it's glory, along with it's history and what it tastes good mixed with. Both broad categories, like "Vodka" and specific types or brands, like "Southern Comfort" are given due attention. Several of the entries are rather surprising. Grand Marnier is listed, along with what it mix it with to actually drink, although it's most typically used solely as a cooking aid, or as part of a mix for marinating fruits. Pisan Ambon, an Indonesian liquor made with banana, is just one of many little known or hard to find liquors explained here, and most of them will have the reader out the next day trying to track the thing down. Following the hard liquor is an equally comprehensive section on champagne and wine, which is then followed by a necessarily shorter segment on beer. There are simply far too many types of beer to give a whole page for each without having a two thousand page book. Several non alcoholic mixers, from the most ordinary to most exotic, are also described in detail.

The obligatory "bartending techniques" section is present, with all the tools of the trade and the various foods and liquids any bartender should have stocked before entertaining. The bulk of the book is in the drink recipes - and this is where "The Ultimate Cocktail Guide" really shines. Hundreds of cocktails are listed, utilizing nearly every liquor previously mentioned in the book, all with full color photos of the end result and a short little blurb about the drink and it's history. A good variety of styles are present, ranging from fruity tooty drinks, to hardcore "knock you off your seat" drinks, to absolutely bedazzling drinks that exist more for presentation than for drinking.

Anyone interested in getting absolutely sloshed, in style, owes it to themselves to purchase this book as quickly as possible.

Calling it the "Ultimate Book" is right in the mark...

I received this book from my parents for my 21st birthday. Now, I knew that such things as beer, wine, and vodka existed and I've had my share of encounters with alcohol before my 21st birthday but I would have never guessed that there was so much information. This book has an introduction which talks about the history of alcohol. Then it has a section on the types of drinks and information about them (I would have never guessed how many there really are: spirits, gin, vodka, rum, whiskey, tequila, brandy, kirsch, etc., etc., etc.). It even talks about non-alcoholic mixers with information on how to serve drinks. Then there is an entire section on bartending techniques (which are very useful when trying to impress guests). And then there are over 130 pages of colorful (ie. pictures) drink recepies with a glossary and an index in the back. This book is easy to use by anyone who has no clue what they are doing and in no time the novice can be impressing their friends at parties and making some interesting and yummy drinks. This book is so easy to use because it spells out how to make these yummy and complicated looking drinks in clearly written steps (and the pictures help too). It will be a long time before I get bored of this guide, I highly recomend it to anyone.

I got this book as a gift and assumed it was just another cocktail guide. Little did I know this book is also a wealth of information on the history of spirits, liqueurs, wines, beers, and more. Also contains bartending techniques, tips and proper etiquette, as well as superb photography of most drinks and popular reccomended brands. I was never too big on cocktails or drinking but now I want to try and make and sample everything.

Beautiful book, definitely worth the $12 it's being sold here for.

I was looking for something to read at my local library yesterday, checked out this book and was up all night reading it! What a super writer! I loved the fact that there were a couple of stories going on at once and how I had no idea "who" the person responsible for the brutal murders of the men were until the very end. Now that to me makes it a great read right there! Also, Ms. McGuire has a way of explaining legal terms so that it is understood by a normal person, like myself. It would make a great movie! I am now off to the bookstore to read all of the other Christine McGuire books!!!

Christine Mcguire is one if not the best author I have ever read. She captivates you, she keeps you extremely interested and it's so hard to put her novels down. I work in a bookstore and if a customer asks for my opinion I always recommend her. I quite often receive the same response and regard that I have for her. Until Proven Guilty was an outstanding novel. Kathryn Mackay is a nineties women (whom we all need) who is raising a daughter while maintaining a highly stressful and successful career. Her life is in danger when a serial killer targets her as his next "Little Pig". She outsmarts him and out manouvers him in novel that'll keep you on the edge of your seat! Excellent work.

When I first saw Visions of Armageddon on sale at the bookstore, I often found myself looking at it more and more. So, finally, I bought it.

This has to be a great book on the 1998 blockbuster film. It contains information on all subjects from the film's genesis to final production. Hundreds of lavish photographs and drawing make it even better. It includes interviews with the cast and crew.

However, for people looking for a good book to read, ignore this. The information skips back and forth. One moment they are telling you about how the film began. Then they are telling you about how the special effects were made. Then they are telling about the genesis and so forth. But the lack of definite timeline does not at all hurt the story of the most overcritized film of all time. As Michael Bay said "There is nothing wrong with entertaining people."

Lola and Charlie are among my favorites as a traveling nanny. I put them in my nanny bag and children like them so much I must often buy another copy as I have left them with the children!

The books have a gentle way of covering values and Charlie is the ideal model of a big brother. I have even used him as an example with a bossy older sibling with "I wonder how Charlie would have handled this?"!

The DVDs are great, making the stories come to life. No fancy graphics, no intricate or soupy sweet over dramatizing here! Just a simple story line with that great little "english" accent we all try to imitate later!

As always Amazon ships quickly and efficiently!

bright and funny - but excellent for kids

My kids love these books, which is a great selling point, I love these books which is great if you have to read them all the time, but even better, they have a great message which is told in a fun way. If you have sibling children who are fighting over the same stuff, or interfering with one another's toys and games, this is a wonderful book with a message.

Lola, who is ever such a little bit, not quite naughty is the little sister of Charlie. Charlie helps look after her, but sometimes it is not that easy becasue she is very small and very funny. Charlie makes a rocket using recycled junk, and wins a prize at school. He asks Lola not to play with it. However Lola waits until charlie is gone out and starts playing with her imaginery friend, Soren Lorensen. Soren suggests that they use the rocket to play with the elephant and two hyenas (who has hyenas in their games!!!!!!) The rocket breaks and when Charlie gets back Lola is left to explain what has happened to the rocket. It is very funny watching Lola talk to Soren Lorensen and finding new excuses, you can really hear the child's voice. In the end Lola is forced to fess up and everything is fixed up and ok.

I love Charlie and Lola Books, and also Lauren's other books on Clarice Bean (gorgeous!)The illustrations are amazing, a mixture of appealing child like art and collage. There are some great interlinking pictures with the text for early readers too.

A wonderful series and great on DVD too.

I purchased the book "Whoop! But It Wasn't Me(Charlie & Lola)" for my neice who is 21/2 years old & who absolutley love Charlie and Lola. On receipt of this book she would not put it down and even took a nap with the book. The only down side if you want to call it that is she wants me to read it every day 2-3 times a day.

Every child can relate

Charlie and his little sister Lola share another totally believable story with us, excellent illustrations, nice blend of images. Dialog accurately reflects young children's speech and draws them into listening as they enjoy the pictures.

The cutest kids ever!

My granddaughters in Australia are keen fans of the Charlie and Lola books. In their case life imitates art since they have a big brother who's just as nurturing as Charlie is!

In fact I first heard this book read to the girls by their teen-aged brother, and the experience brought a smile to my face.

Lola's impulse control is not great, and in WHOOPS! BUT IT WASN'T ME she again tries Charlie's patience -- this time by breaking his handmade, prize-winning rocket. But the details of the story aren't so important as the gentle example for little ones. Kids see that Lola is loved no matter how outrageous she is, and Charlie models patience, negotiation and resourcefulness. Nice lessons slipped in with a fun story.

Lauren Child's sweet stories and delightful illustrations charm children and adults alike. This is my favorite (so far) of the Charlie and Lola books.

I heard about this guide on the radio and bought it. I love it, it has most of my favorite movies like Maid in Manhattan and Sleepless in Seattle. There are a couple of other movie guides out there but this has newer movies and is easier to use. My friends who go to New York all ask to borrow my guide.

I came across this book one day and it is so fun. I am a huge film buff and have lived in NYC for years but didn't know anything about these locations except for the obvious ones like the Empire State Building in Sleepless in Seattle. Little did I know that I live down the street from where the Friends characters live...and Friends is my favorite show! Now when people coem to visit I always point out locations that I got from the guide.

I also like that the guide is lightweight and easy to carry around, and the map is not a huge embarrassing pullout so I don't look like a tourist when I whip it out.

I think anyone who loves movies and entertainment (and NYC) should get this guide.

Do You Know All the Words to "Men of Harlech"?

Do you know all the words to "Men of Harlech"? Do you long to tell some slacker whining about why you got stuck with a dirty job: "Because we're here lad and nobody else. Just us." Do you believe that one of the component parts of a miracle can be, "a bayonet... with some guts behind it"? Well, my lad, then this is the book for you, the book that will tell you everything you ever wanted to know and more about the greatest war movie ever made: Zulu.

This labor of love by Sheldon Hall is chock full of surprises, like the fact that the creative partnership behind it was composed of three flaming leftists: a couple of youthful Communists, John Prebble and Cy Endfield, who avoided the United States during the McCarthy Era, and an unrepentant socialist, Stanley Baker. Contrary to what one might have expected, surprisingly little of their leftist politics showed up on the screen (some of it Sheldon shows ending up on the cutting room floor in what is either dumb luck or good thinking on somebody's part) in a movie that is often condemned today as a tribute to British imperialism. Why? Well, partly it was just a better grasp of reality. They would have realized what contemporary leftists in the film industry are incapable of understanding anymore: that there is more money to be made in celebrating military heroism than in trashing it. But there was something else that IMHO made a world of difference: they had all lived through WWII, and they had all served in the military as well, making it MUCH more difficult for them to despise the common soldier as the subhuman tool of imperialism that modern leftists who have neither served themselves nor faced the realistic prospect of losing their freedom on the battlefield do so easily today.

Mr. Hall's thoroughness is evident throughout. Among other things he exposes Jack Hawkins' famous claim to have walked out on his own premiere to have a serious problem: the scenes he complains about were never in the movie, and then offers a plausible explanation for it. He also devotes a full chapter to the difficulties inherent in making a film on this subject in South Africa during Apartheid. The later prequel Zulu Dawn is also briefly discussed.

Perhaps the most interesting piece of all was Mr. Hall's spirited, and I must say to me quite convincing, defense of the movie against nitpickers looking for historical errors by pointing out that:

1. the subsequent explosion of research on the Anglo-Zulu War, much of it inspired by the movie itself, was rather obviously not available to the filmmakers,
2. some of the nitpicks are hardly settled questions and in any case reflect PREVIOUSLY made stylistic choices: (Should Chard as an Engineer have been depicted in a BLUE coat? In a contemporaneous painting of the battle HE POSED FOR he is shown wearing a red coat.)
3. during volley fire scenes, you can see in the closeups that Michael Caine possesses anachronistic dental work for the period -- I'm forced to agree with the author that, "this is madness!"

I was a bit dubious at first about Mr. Hall's superficially cutesy layout: dividing the book into three parts before, during, and after the film shoot respectively titled: "Preparing for Battle", "Dispatches from the Front", and "Victory and Aftermath", and further subdividing it into chapters titled with quotes from the movie, for example 8. "Fall them in, call the roll" -- Casting the actors and 18. "Volley fire present!" -- Reviews and criticism, but as in the examples cited, I cannot dispute their appropriateness. (I wonder how long it took Mr. Hall to come up with them all?)

Defects? The only one I can think of is an unfair one: I only wish Mr. Hall could have written this a few decades sooner. After forty years so many of the principals are gone, some to the simple ravages of time and many more to the Big C. Fortunately devoted spouses and children, justifiably proud of their lost loved ones' achievements, were able to fill in many of the gaps.

Note: if you want a complete audio recording of the movie's version of "Men of Harlech", which is slightly different from any other, your best choice is the first track on the Best of Ivor Emmanuel, who sang it in the movie as Private Owen. This isn't precisely the musical track heard on the film, but unlike the version heard on the film's audio track, it is complete and in one piece. (A more recently recorded choral version without Ivor Emmanuel is also available: Zulu (1964 Film) (Includes Other John Barry Film Score Selections))

With the market glutted with works supplying overviews of both the whole of filmdom and specific film genres, more and more authors are turning their attention and critical eyes to the study of individual movies. One of the best of these, and a model for future works of this sort, is WITH SOME GUTS BEHIND IT by Sheldon Hall which deals with the making of the film ZULU. To call this work definitive would simply not do it justice. Frankly, it is hard to imagine any area of the creation of this motion picture that Hall has not covered. No nook or cranny has gone unexplored. In addition, it is gloriously illustrated. The absolutest highest marks in all departments. It was a long time in coming but for once the wait was definitely worth it. Bravo!

THE BRITISH ALAMO! -co-starring ALFIE and not the DUKE!

Of course the real star both in front of the camera and behind it in Sheldon Hall's book, is actor Stanley Baker. Not a household name in America, but one who was certainly a presence in Britain. Enough that is, to personally get this exspensive epic into production. Together with writer-producer-director partner Cy Endfield, they had just as much trouble making the 1964 Paramount release "Zulu", as John Wayne had in filming his version of "The Alamo" four years earlier. Hall is certainly one dedicated "Zulu" movie buff and it shows in his exhaustive research and attention to detail in this book. It's everything you ever wanted to know about the movie and the real event at Rorke's Drift, South Africa in 1879. When a mere 150 soldiers of the British Army, were forced to take on over 4,000 Zulu warriors.

Stanley Baker sadly never achieved international stardom, but a young "pre-Alfie" Michael Caine was introduced to the world in this film -without the cockney accent though. Indeed, this is a good-read, well illustrated with script pages, shooting schedules and set designs etc. I remember myself seeing "Zulu" on it's first release in London, at my local ABC cinema and the place was packed. A schoolboy's dream of an action picture and it was British produced, well American Joseph E. Levine did help to get it financed...

The book Zulu:With Some Guts Behind It is a great book for people who like the movie Zulu. It explains every stage of the film-making, and tells you about the actors and their own carrers. I love the movie Zulu, and I think that the book has, if it is even possible, made it so I enjoy it more! Another great thing about this book, is that it has alot of pictures, so it is not as intimidating if you were just going to start reading, and say to yourself, Wow, thats alot of pages, of alot of words, and letters. And the author breaks it down, so if you just want to read for a short time you can pick the topic you want to read about, and not have to go through the book to find something you are intrested in that is not too long. All and all, it is a fantastic book that you could read over and over.
