Great book and easy to read and follow. I built my first 22" over a couple days after reading the book. I'll make my bread for Thanksgiving in the oven!

This is a well written book, nicely illustrated and with a well thought out structure. It covers everything you should need to know on how to build an earth oven. The writing is clear and concise, while still conveying the obvious joy of someone who is genuinely inspired by their subject. I especially liked it because it contains a lot of technical detail illustrated with many examples and not much of the boring, preachy philosophical rambling that you find in so many books on hand building from natural materials. Not that there is anything wrong with philiosophising in its place, but I just wanted a book on how to build an earth oven and this is exactly what I got. I would also recommend, as a companion book, 'The Bread Builders: Hearth Loaves and Masonry Ovens' which is a more general and comprehensive book on masonry stoves and baking of bread.

There are pages that tell you what kinds of materials are best for different applications, how to mix your mud, the various methods for insulating and how to use the completed oven.

I went to a major bookstore looking for information on wood fired ovens and got nothing......the book I bought at Amazon was just what I needed. Maybe next year we will have a wood fired oven in our back yard. Service was good and promt.

If you are looking to build an outdoors oven, you must read this book. Even if your goal is not an earth oven. Besides detailed information about the techniques to build an earth oven, Kiko describes very clearly the process of baking with wood and goes thru all the alternatives. His insight in using different types of materials is very valuable and his opinions are explained thoroughly.

The book is also very well written and engages you from the beginning.

I really do like the book because it shows a lot about math and what you can do with lines. If I could purchase this book I would take them and give them out to people for them to read it.This book is so amazing to me,it make me want to learn more.

I was given this book as a teenager, and never forgot it. I used to ask other people if they knew about it, but few seemed to have ever heard of it. I am an artist, and in spite of the use of 'math' in the title, thought this book was about art.
I missed ALL the math info and puns. (It was interesting reading the reviews of the math and science readers.) I can only tell you that the cleaver drawings tell stories that are universal. They work as well for art and life as they seem to work for math.
I have now given this book to many people. Every one of them has thanked me.
This is my favorite gift to give away for Valentine's day.

Chuck Jones chose wisely

I purchased this book as a companion to the same named academy award winning animated short (1966?) by Chuck Jones. It was out of print until now. The short was recently released as a bonus feature on the DVD release of the Glass bottom boat. Bought the DVD, never have even looked at the main movie. It's enjoyable to watch a clever book come to life and be even more unforgetable then the written word.

A Classic story

I was given this book in 1980 by a college friend when it was in print in a smaller format. I am so pleased to see it again. If I could only own 100 books, this would be one of them.

Great, believe it or not, for high school kids

Norton Juster wove more than puns and visual gags into this short book. Not to take an ounce away from those fantastic double entendres ("drawn and on edge").

There are references to social commentary "they all look the same anyhow," "freedom is not a license for anarchy," "why don't you find a nice line and settle down." There is amazing (for kids) vocabulary: quintessence, vector, potent, paralleliped. If you want to go there, there is also out of date vocabulary "Oh, what a head!" This book is rich.

Most of my high school math classes read "The Dot and the Line" at some point during the year, often as a read-aloud before a holiday. We find the puns, I explain the jokes, we discuss (briefly the social commentary), someone looks up the hard words, and they read a little boy-girl love story. It's the best kind of learning, the kind that happens when they think they are having fun!

Drummer Hoff (Stories to Go!)
This book was enjoyed by my daughter when she was 5 and now my grandson is enjoying this version of the book, the pictures are smaller than the first copy we had but still terrific and the rhymes are great. Older kids can finish the end of the rhyme after a few times of reading, little ones like my grandson who is 2-1/2 just like the sound of the story and beautiful award winning illustrations.

If your family is like mine and missed this little gem all these years, now is the time to rush out and get a copy. For more than a year, from the day we found this at a garage sale, Drummer Hoff has been a "must read" when visiting Grandma's house. The color, the repetitive rhythm of the text (that even the 19 month old now recites), and the details that continue to add interest--all make this a fun read-aloud, especially when the adult adds motion and volume to the KaBoom ending.

Though the little ones are far too young to be introduced to heavy subjects like war, it has only been natural to add our own "and only the birds and flowers and bugs are left" to the last two pages, and there will be time enough to discuss the larger story begun here.

Overall, just a great read, illustrated with pictures that will help children far more than some of the cartoonish excesses that are passed off as art in far too much juvenile literature.

I purchased a copy of this book for each of my two grandsons. I had read it to all three of my children and they all loved it - the repetition and the rhymes and the pictures. When my daughter told me that she had taken it out from the library to read to her son, I decided to get each one a copy of the book so they could enjoy it all the time.

This was another of my favorites as a child and was happy to find it on AMAZON. As a child, my mom would take us to the library. I would be heartbroken if DH was missing. Now, I read it to my son at bedtime and give all the fine gentlemen appropriate brogues. Aye, Corporal Chowder, 'e brought th' powder.

Not to mention we love the stained glass imagery. A Wonderfully artist and a great quick story.

Not much swing instruction going on here. This book is primarily for the player who can hit good shots and has above average skill but is still putting up disappointing numbers. It's not really earth shattering stuff. You know that by trying for eagles on par 5 you end up brining bogey and worse into play. You know that when you are in trouble the correct play is to just get back to the fairway. If you are like me you just need someone like Raymond Floyd to tell you these things before you listen! He will tell you these things and plenty more in this great book. It's not watered down a bunch of boring anecdotes - just the goods from a guy who knows how to go low.

Best Book on Scoring and Playing with Confidence

Review Date: 2006-08-21
I am a low handicap golfer who grinds to shoot in the low 70's. Typically, I hit 7-8 greens in regulation. After reading Floyd's book, I played a round and hit 14 greens in regulation. The next round I played in a vicious wind and shot 77. Better than scoring low, these were the two most comfortable rounds I've ever played.

Mr. Floyd's advice is about scoring. There is little about swing mechanics. I will read the first five chapters over and over. After reading these chapters, my mind is calm and clear. If I take this mindset to the course, I am fully confident that I will play my best golf that day.

I own over 40 books on golf. This book is at the top of my list. If I had this book when I was learning the game, I feel I would have saved years in lowering my score. Follow Mr. Floyd's advice and lower your score.

A must read for anyone wanting to improve

As posted previously, this book isn't about swing mechanics, but about playing smarter golf and being realistic about your game. I think this book would be extremely beneficial to the beginning golfer and would make a great gift. It's a quick read and well written. I try to read it a couple of times a year to remind myself to play within my abilities and keep a good attitude.

Highly recommended!

Floyd is still one of the best chippers and shot gamers in golf. The PGA pros when interviewed say the same thing. He has a lot to share and much of it is "tough love" to us amateurs--don't over-club, be realistic with your average distance not your best distance etc. He is a very clever golf course manager and it shows in his advice. His description of his early days when he was a risk-taker and losing, while trying to be like Arnie, was very interesting. Once he decided to manage his risks around the course and be himself he became a big winner. This would certainly not be the first book for a beginner (you first need to learn to swing) but this should be a fairly early addition if you want to score well.

I loved this book! The entire time I listed to this book on cassette I felt I was hearing privileged information...yet Jess Oppenheimer shared his intellectual jewels freely as if they were common everyday thoughts. Well, for him, they were. What a genius. And what a witty, creative, generous, and responsible man! If he were alive I'd write him a fan letter.

This is an excellent informative book about the "I Love Lucy" show and a must have for any Lucy fan! The cd that is included is worth the price of the whole set alone. In the cd it includes hours of hilarious episodes from I Love Lucy and My Favorite Husband starring Lucille Ball, you will also receive lost scenes from the shows on the cd. I am not much of a reader but this book you just can't put down because it is so good and of course I love Lucy! The book doesn't look thick on the picture shown on Amazon but it is a nice thick paperback book and includes lots of wonderful pictures of the cast of I Love Lucy and fun information that you may have not of known about I love Lucy and how it became to be produced.

I REALLY LOVE THIS BOOK AND I THINK EVERY I LOVE LUCY FAN SHOULD READ IT!!!

Behind the Scenes of the Best TV Show Ever

I'd like to start with a clarification: this book is not a biography of Lucy, it is the creator's (Jess Oppenheimer) memoir. As such, there are many parts of the book that have nothing to do with Lucy, including episodes from Oppenheimer's childhood and young adult life.

However, this is still a GREAT book! It is well-written and full of entertaining annecdotes. "Laughs, Luck, and Lucy" follows Oppenheimer's slow rise to the top in the Hollywood radio industry. He describes Lucille Ball's program, "My Favorite Husband," which became the basis for "I Love Lucy." The book also includes some behind the scenes information about the making of "I Love Lucy."

The included audio cd is fun because it has clips from both "I Love Lucy" and "My Favorite Husband."

If you are only interested in information specifically about Lucille Ball, this might not be the book for you (try her autobiography, "Love, Lucy"). However, if you (like me) are fascinated with everything surrounding "I Love Lucy" and the Hollywood entertainment industry of the 1940s and 1950s, this is a great read!
