My sister and I read this aloud to our aunts and cousins who'd gathered for a baby shower. Being retired elementary teachers we, of course, showed the pictures, too. Everyone loved the book...especially the mom-to-be. Simple message and lovely vintage pictures.

My mother recently gave this book to my daughter for her baptism and read it out loud to all of us at the party following the ceremony. It was so touching that I could not contain my tears and ended up wetting several tissues. The illustrations are beautiful and the sentiment so perfect. I will purchase this book to give to friends who are expecting their first child.

Faux Pas on Cover

I'm not sure what the publishers were thinking when they chose a picture of a white horse and a cowboy as the cover illustration for this great poem about the ninth-century Anglo-Saxon king, Alfred the Great. It sets the wrong mood for the story.

Popular Fiction Writer Anne Perry recommends this ballad.

Review Date: 2007-04-22
Anne Perry, the enormously popular writer of historical fiction, just recommended this ballad by G. K. Chesterton as one of five must read tales of historical fiction. (See the Wall Street Journal's online Opinion Page for April 21, 2007 in an article entitled "Past Tense.") Here's part of what she said:

"This is the story of the English King Alfred's desperate stand against invading Danes in 878. England is conquered, and Alfred is a fugitive when he sees a vision of the Virgin Mary that bids him call together the remnants of his people for a final battle. "The Ballad of the White Horse" is an epic poem of courage, passion and unsurpassable beauty."

If you'd like to read other tales and poems by Chesterton, you might want to get "The Ballad of the White Horse" as part of a collection of his poetry that I edited for not much more money. It's called G. K. Chesterton's Early Poetry and has "The Ballad of the White Horse," along with two other books of Chesterton poetry under one cover. That means you'll also get his best humorous poetry, "Greybeards at Play." No less a writer than George Orwell ranked Chesterton as one of the three best writers of funny poetry in twentieth century England. The poems are a riot of the ridiculous and are accompanied with equally funny sketches he did.

And although Anne Perry and I have the same last name, as far as I know we're not related. Her's is a pen name. Mine is a real name. I guess I'm not creative enough to invent a name for myself.

An epic poem of phenomenal power

Mr. Chesterton has a masterful skill with the pen; _Orthodoxy_ and _The Napoleon of Notting Hill_ are wonderful books--but _The Ballad of the White Horse_ is heartbreaking in its power, beauty, and nobility. With a stunning use of alliteration, rhythm, and imagery, Mr. Chesterton teaches the reader about true hearts, true faith, and true sacrifice. I have bought a few copies of this book to give as gifts to friends, and I eagerly recommend it to anyone who will listen. This book is a must-have for any individual interested in expanding their knowledge of great poetry!

One of the greatest books I have ever read
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-21
Out of the thousand or so books I have read in my life, if I were to put the Bible aside (since the Bible speaks with a special authority to believers and cannot really be compared to other books), I have read no more than five or six books that I would call truly great. That means there are only five or six books I would rate at five stars. This is one. Yes, it is that good.

I have never read any author who could make the English language sing the way Chesterton does in this poem -- for over a hundred pages. In contrast to contemporary "poets" whose "poems" consist of a bunch of strange words scattered apparently at random on a page, whose meaning, if there is one, is far beyond obscurity, Chesterton had apparently unlimited ability to create rhyme and alliteration, and then he bound it all tightly in the sing-song ballad style that carries it all swiftly along. The words of this poem are glorious to hear, and really, this book should be read aloud, so that one might hear the music of the words.

And few have ever been able to match the way Chesterton paints pictures with words. I will quote one passage, and hope it is not to long, to illustrate this. The scene here is Alfred's army making one final charge against the Danish camp:

Then bursting all and blasting
Came Christendom like death,
Kicked of such catapults of will,
The staves shiver, the barrels spill,
The waggons waver and crash and kill
The waggoners beneath.

Barriers go backward, banners rend,
Great shields groan like a gong,
Horses like horns of nightmare
Neigh horribly and long.

Horses ramp and rock and boil
And break their golden reins,
And slide on carnage clamorously,
Down where the bitter blood doth lie,
Where Ogier went on foot to die
In the old way of the Danes.

It would be hard to imagine anyone anyone describing such a violent scene in so few words any better than Chesterton does in that passage. And this passage is but one of dozens of glorious word-pictures that Chesterton's poetry paints in this book.

Beyond its magnificent use of the English language, this book also contains much philosophical insight -- insight that, although first published in 1911, is directly and clearly applicable today. Chesterton expresses very clearly the way that Christianity has formed the heart of Western culture over the ages, and the way that Christian faith -- which seems all about self-denial and thus sadness -- leads to unconquerable joy.

The book, of course, is not perfect; no work of literature can be. There are places where it gets a bit too preachy for my taste. But the book's flaws are few and minor, while its good points are many and glorious.

How good is this book? I have read it at least 50 times in my life, and I still enjoy reading it. In my opinion it is one of the truly greatest works written in the English language. It is one of the few books I have read that truly deserves five stars.

Simply amazing

I had read some of Chesterton's fictional books, most of which contain poems which he has written, and I very much enjoyed his poems, so I decided to get a book of his poetry. This too I really enjoyed, so I decided to get another book of his poetry, this time it was The Ballad of the White Horse, and this book simply blew away all of the rest of Chesterton's poems. In fact, it simply blows away most poems by anyone. I have read Dante's Divine Comedy, Milton' Paradise Lost, Eliot's Wasteland, Chaucer's Canturbury Tales, etc., but I can honestly say that I enjoyed this epic far more than any of them. I am not saying that it is a better written poem or that it should be ranked above these classics, but I am saying that it is much more exciting to read than the others. Somehow Chesterton makes his poem involving: you are drawn into it and cannot put the book down until you have finished the chapter. He wrote it in such a way that the verses beg to be read quickly, and as I read I found myself reading faster and faster, until I was stumbling over the words and had to slow down again. Chesterton, like no other poet whom I know of, paints a picture of glory, honor, bravery, and captures the true spirit of an idealized Medieval War. The poem resounds with the drums of doom, the cries of angels, the hordes of invading barbarians and great deeds of heroes of old. If I were to recommend owning one epic poem, this would be the one.

This comic book was pretty good with another humerous approach to to the Simpsons comic saga. Stories include
1. Sideshow Blob-Sideshow Bob is turned into a giant phlem.
2. The Exorsister-Lisa possessed by the spirit of Madonna.
3. The Immigration of the Body Snatchers-Pod people take over and Homer tries to convince them they are here and not crazy.
4. Call me Homer-Famly history of Homer eating blubber in the tale of Ishmael.
5. Bart People-Bart turns into a cat.
6. Little Shop of Homers-Killer Homer plant.
Pretty good book overall.

I think this book was really funny. I really liked Homer Simpson's Halloween Carols. He is my favorite cartoon character. I guess the funniest part is, when the Simpsons were watching Kent Brockman talking about a plant that eats donuts, and Homer said "Mmmm... Donuts." That was pretty funny. Another funny scene was when everyone in Springfield found out this was just a comic book, and they didn't really exist. Homer said "If I don't exist, can I still eat donuts?" That one cracked me up. I guess, now, you can see why I like Homer Simpson so much.

A must have for any Simpsons fan

For those of you who are fans of the hit television show "The Simpsons", you are probably well acquainted with the legendary "Treehouse of Horror" episodes that have become a Halloween tradition. These episodes have proven to be such a seasonal favorite that Groening and the gang have decided to dish out even more tales of terror in "Bart Simpson's Treehouse of Horror: Heebie-Jeebie Hullabaloo".

Hullabaloo is a collection of comics and sketches that cleverly capture the humor and style of the Simpsons Halloween specials. Much like the television version, the main stories in Hullabaloo are parodies of famous horror films. The first story in the book is a parody of the classic horror film "The Blob". In the sketch, Simpsons character Sideshow Bob takes an experimental treatment that transforms him into "Sideshow Blob". Seizing the opportunity to take revenge on his nemesis Bart, Sideshow Blob squeezes out of prison and wreaks havoc on Springfield.

After Springfield is saved from "Sideshow Blob", they barely have time to recover before Lisa becomes possessed by the evil spirit of Madonna in "The Exorsister", a combo-parody of the infamous "Exorcist" and the even more infamous Madonna. The book continues with additional parodies of films such as "Little Shop of Horrors", "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers", and "Cat People".

In between the main features of the book are a plethora of comics, guides, and stories hosted by and featuring an assortment of Springfield characters. One of these guides features everyone's favorite slack-jawed yokel, Cletus Del Roy. Cletus presents to us "A Yokels Guide to Halloween" which teaches us how to celebrate Halloween like "Edgar Allan" Poe white trash. Another extra features Bart's "Guide to Low-Budget Costumes" which shows you how to cheaply transform yourself into horrid monsters such as "Vaselino, The Thing That Wouldn't Dry". You'll also find the story of "Elijah Dunn and the One-Armed Nun", Evil Dr. Burn's "Goodtime Servant Factory", "Springfield in Hell", and much, much more.

Hullabaloo is colorful, fun, entertaining, and just in time for Halloween. The comical cast breathes sarcasm and humor into favorite horror classics. If you are a fan of the Simpsons and Halloween, then this book will not disappoint you.

This is a wonderful book to begin with if you have never melted glass in your life, or if you have had minimal training. It explains all the equipment you will need to start your glass studio. It gives clear instructions on several fairly simple beadmaking techniques, with which you can expand on with your own creativity. The pictures of the beads are beautifully photographed and will give you endless ideas just by looking at them. If you are an intermediate to advanced lampworker, though, this book would be far too basic for you.

I took a weekend beginning beadmaking class, and my teacher sent me home Saturday night with this book. I read it cover to cover and went back the next day inspired by all of the talented beadmakers who were so generous as to share their years of experience. I made much better beads that second day, and have been hooked ever since. The biographies are inspiring; so many discovered beadmaking and and changed careers. The techniques are well illustrated with photos. I highly recommend this book to motivated beginners.

This book has lots of pictures of beads that are so creative and beautiful it is a joy just to look at them. It could even be a coffee table book. It does inspire you to want to go make your own beads. It ranges from a lot of detail for the way most beads are made to an overview on some, but the pictures are complete in showing how each bead has been made. If you love glass beads you will love this book!

I had seen this book in book lists of various suppliers but as there are so many books on bead making the title did not get my attention. After reading reviews in Amazon I bought the book and was sorry I had not purchased it earlier. This book is excellent in every way. The quality of the book is very high. The pictures are great. The selection of projects is very good as even beginners can tackle some of the beads and get encouraging results. I believe this book will appeal even to non-flameworkers who want to find out how beads are made. A minor criticism is that the artist interviews were a bit repetitive. I guess beadmakers think alike in more ways than glass work.

As a student finishing my B.S. in Computer Science, I very badly needed something to liven up my CPU architecture and discrete math classes, which were horribly boring.

This book not only did a GREAT job of clarifying the finer points of boolean logic, but somehow managed make it interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to understand the nuts-and-bolts behind what makes your computer tick.

Irreverent writing, good topics
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-26
Maxfield's book is unique, both in format and in content. And I'm not just talking about the gumbo recipe at the end.

The first section, almost 150 pages, is "logic lite." It starts with transistors, both MOS and bipolar. From there it works its way up to simple latches and such, and scratches the surface of state machines, with side trips to boolean arithmetic and such. The breezy, informal style will work for people put off by more academic treatments, but the logic design content stops way short of what any other basic logic text would present.

The second, longer section covers material sorely missing from all other logic texts I know. It starts with the simpler parts of silicon fab process, then goes through all kinds of printed circuits and hybrid packages giving a fair tour of the basic printed curcuit (PC) processes that were current when the book was written (1995). It even goes into gutsy stuff like the copper patterns in PC processes that have to do with heat flow during soldering. All those real-world facts earned this book an extra star. The "far out technology" chapter at the end is an interesting read, too, with its discussions of nano, optical, and molecular computing.

The book's weaknesses are significant, though. It would work well with any of several companion texts that would cover what this misses. That includes more advanced logic techniques, like alternatives to gate-level implementation and all the fussy bits of state machines. A standard logic text (e.g. Katz) would fill in those blanks. Going in a different direction, it does only a little towards talking about how PC layout interacts with logic design. More about ground planes, guard rings, power decoupling, RF emissions, etc. would fit well with the detail presented here, espcially when you see how much time and effort it already spends on "vias" vs. "holes." The little bit of analog discussion from the front would help here - why inductive effects matter at high frequencies, why distributed capacitance is different from lumped, why you'd have a high-value and low-value capacitor in parallel, and why that ceramic cap near the power input has a saw cut in the edge. A third possible direction would be the way Wirth's book on circuit design for CS students went: into the higher levels of design, letting tools attend to the lower levels. The biggest flaw is in treating FPGAs as exotic, out-there technology - by 1995, they were well into the main stream, and have very nearly killed off discrete logic and ASICs in many areas.

If you just want a light-weight intro to logic design and to the physical circuits that carry it, this is OK. It could have been better in all directions and, at this 2005 writing, you should check it's sell-by date. I gave it the fourth star for addressing PCs and mounting at all, not for addressing them well.

They are around 30-odd pages each and first published April 2008.

This book is in the mid-range for reading level of the suggested ages, aprrox. RL 1-2. Benny and Penny have been in another book of the series and they are a fun brother and sister pairing. In this book Benny wants to play pirates and just wants Penny to leave him alone. He isn't very nice to her. But by the end he has learnt his lesson and they are friends together and Benny learns sometimes little sisters can play "boy" stuff too!

Benny just wants to play at being a pirate with his cardboard box ship and his wooden sword. But his annoying little sister wants to play as well, dressed in her finest princess outfit. Benny doesn't want to play with her and calls her a cry-baby and tries to get mom to take her away. This nefarious plan goes awry when he makes Penny cry and he has to play with her. And what better way to get rid of your sister than a one sided game of hide and seek? So Benny ditches his sister just so he can make believe and play his pirate game. But when he realises that his sister is missing he begins to realise that maybe these games are better with two.

Benny And Penny; Let's Pretend is yet another delightful little tale from Francoise Mouly's Toon Books, told with deceptively simple layouts and delicately old-fashioned artwork.

Geoffrey Hayes tells an all too believable tale of what it feels like to be someone's older sibling. It's no surprise at the book's end that he talks of his own brother and all the fights they've had as youngsters. All of the frustration and all of the love is represented brilliantly in the pages of Benny And Penny. This is a lovely, warm, charming graphic novel that will be immediately loved and understood by it's readers.

I never read anything by this author before - my son just happened to bring the book home from school but it has really bowled me over. The story is so cute and truly funny and insightful about childhood, yet the wording is so simple that my 5yo son was able to read it himself (with a little practice from hearing me read it first.) There are a few words that push him and the rest are easy ones that help him feel comfortable reading a truly engaging story all by himself. It seems like it should be so simple to think of a good story using only basic words, but I'm sure its quite difficult. This book sets the standard. Illustrations are great too.

Benny and Penny are another brother and sister from the TOON books collection (see: Mo and Jo). Bossy older brother Benny won't let Penny play with him. But in the end (of course), Benny realizes playing with Penny is more fun than playing alone.

The pictures are all hand-drawn and it is very easy to see how much work was put into this book. Great for young readers!

Benny, stop being so mean to your sister!

Ty Burr has written an excellent book. It's entirely readable and more than just a list of movies. He breaks it down into age levels, gives selling points for a film, possible "pause-button explanations" when there are topics that may need to be explained or discussed, and other films to line up next. An example would be starting with the Adventures of Robin Hood and moving onto The Sea Hawk and Captain Blood. We added The Prince & the Pauper and so Errol Flynn is now a known actor in our household.

Would I ever have thought to try The African Queen with my sons? No. But it's true that the Hepburn and Bogart characters are amazing, the leeches grossed them out, they enjoyed Hepburn pouring the booze into the river and the adventure of the river journey made for a great family movie night.

Burr's description of showing his daughters movies like King Kong will make you laugh out loud and I enjoyed reading the descriptions of movies that even if they aren't suitable for my family. I have sons while Burr has daughters but that just makes me wonder if I could get my family to watch a musical - I bet I can with some of Burr's suggestions.

When a book keeps getting checked out from the library that means it's time to buy my own copy. This is just that type of book.

We were growing tired of so-called children's movies as a sole source of entertainment for our family film nights and with our kids ranging in age from 1 (not accounted for here) to 11- we needed a change. I stumbled upon this book when I was trying to get opinions about any Hitchcock films being appropriate for 8 and 11 year olds, and it has become our trusty guide ever since. We started out with the Errol Flynn Robin Hood, Singing in the Rain, and West Side Story- and its been great. We are all entertained, no one feels "dumbed down" to, even the 5 year old is riveted. I have been setting TiVo weekly so we always have a choice rerady, plus we take it to the video store. The reviews have been spot on, the age recommendations are good, I can sit through a movie with my kids all the way through, and I feel like my kids are getting some cultural points from their movie watching. I will be giving this book as a holidaY gift to some of the families I know. Highly recommended!

I can't say enough good things about this book. It has ended the difficult search for movies that please both the kids and the adults. It has inspired my family to get at least one pre-70s movie every week to watch together. It's been an education. Through this book, we've found a few movies that we all unequivocally adore, and others that we enjoy but have sparked some important deeper conversations. His ideas on why older movies are good for our children are very thoughtful.

My daughters are nearly the same age as his daughters were when he wrote the book (9 & 11), so the book is particularly on target for us. I love how Burr describes his daughters' and their friends' reactions to old movies. I am surprised by how much negativity about older movies he says has received from some of his children's friends and their parents, because my children and their friends have always been completely receptive to older and black & white movies. But we don't move in mainstream circles (we are secular homeschoolers), so I will take his word for it.

If you enjoy watching movies with your children, you need to own this book.

Un des livres sur le cinéma qui m'a le plus enthousiasmé. Une écriture très divertissante et des réflexions sur les films et leurs artisants qui captent notre intérêt au point de ne plus pouvoir arrêter notre lecture.

I came across this book in my local library, and after reading it, am going to purchase a copy for myself, and perhaps give it out as gifts for friends that have young children. This is an amazing movie resource. Ty Burr writes in such a familiar, easy-to-read style, and despite his motives [trying to get us to expand our young ones' movie viewing experiences through old movies/classics], never once comes across as condescending or snobbish.

The fact is that children these days are really being fed a steady, and not so healthy diet of the same type of movies that have spawned sequels, mass merchandising, and dare I say movies that don't really promote great role models [I have had enough of those tween movies with young Hollywood starlets in them]. Ty Burr provides great tips and ideas on overcoming this problems by suggesting old movies, or rather classics that will appeal to the toddler set[Meet Me in St Louis], the tween set[The African Queen], and also teenagers[Metropolis]. There are also old movies he doesn't recommend you watch with your children. The best part of the book is the comprehensive list of old movie titles in the different categories such as comedy, drama, musicals, action, adventure & westerns, horror, sci fi and fantasy, & foreign movies.

All in all, I'd highly recommend this book to readers who are interested in expanding the movie viewing experiences of the young children in their lives, and even for one's own viewing pleasure [there were titles in here that I had never come across and plan to check out!].

I turn to The Big Messy Art Book when I'm looking for a totally engaging activity for my preschool class. Children can't believe they are actually getting to do something as fun as dipping a tennis ball in paint and throwing it at cardboard taped to the school fence, or strapping sponges to their feet, stepping in paint and going "paint walking."

MaryAnn Kohl has a wealth of ideas that work well for a group or individual children. Her lists of materials and directions are clear and easy to follow. The tone is light-hearted and playful. This book is a winner.

Messy Art is great.

The projects are wonderfully oversized and adventurous. I'd like to remove the word messy, because all art is a bit messy, and this one is really ADVENTUROUS more than messy. It's fantastic art fun! The kids I work with beg me for projects from this book, and are delighted when I join in the fun. Highly recommended. I believe the publisher's website has free projects from this book for your viewing as does the author's website.

This book is my kids' favorite! Everything is either very LARGE and exciting, or SILLY and exciting, or ADVENTUROUS and exciting, or extremely INTERESTING and exciting. Don't buy this if you want your child to sit in a corner with crayons for the rest of her/his life and never look beyond the expected. This is for the kids that will challenge their imaginations and explore art from a new view, building who they will be as adults.

This book has been out in the hands of good teachers/parents/child care folks/kids for awhile now, but I've found that it is new to many kids who are just discovering it. One little guy I worked with recently as a visiting author to his school told me: "I didn't know a tennis ball could be so interesting, did you?" He was referring to painting with tennis balls. Our group tried several approches with painty tennis balls....rolling them around in a wading pool covered with paper, tossing them at a wall of paper outdoors, holding and pressing on paper, bouncing on paper on the floor, and a few other ideas that kids thought up that are NOT in the book, but should have been. Read on: The little guy who told me tennis balls are interesting had thought up a idea where he rolled the ball deliberately through paint and then along the border of large paper. Within the border, he made dot-prints with different colors of paint. When it was dry, he outlined each dot with a black marker. The result was a huge bubbly design painting. I was impressed with his process, and the resulting painting was delightful and all his own! I love when my books give kids a boost to be their own artists and live in their own creativity. What a great day spending time with kid-artists. Someday I'll collect all their unique ideas and write a new book called "Kids Are More Artistic Than I Am!" Keep having fun with kids, from your friend, MaryAnn Please visit my website for free art ideas: www.brightring.com.
