Sweet, Timeless Short StoriesReview Date: 2006-06-23
Many of these stories attempt to teach a moral, though often it is not obvious due to the author's skill. These are old stories and they reflect the values of the time they were written in. My ADHD eleven year old read the book himself and enjoyed it and is looking forward to the sequel.
Here are the stories included:
1) Mrs. Redwing's Speckled Egg - Mrs. Redwing has just laid a beautiful new egg and the Merry Little Breezes must help keep it safe from Tommy Brown.
2) How Reddy Fox Was Surprised - When Johnny Chuck wanders too far from home, Reddy Fox decides to play a trick on him. But the joke's on Reddy Fox.
3) Why Grandfather Frog Has No Tail - Grandfather Frog tells the Merry Little Breezes why Mother Nature took away all frogs' tails.
4) Why Jimmy Skunk Wears Stripes - When Mrs. Ruffed Grouse's eggs are destroyed by "a pair of eyes," the whole forest seeks the culprit. When Jimmy Skunk is found out, his days of night camouflage are over. (This was my son's favorite.)
5) The Willful Little Breeze - When one of the Merry Little Breezes stays in the Green Meadow after Old Mother West Wind has gone home behind the Purple Hills, he foils Hooty the Owl and Reddy Fox's plans to eat Mr. Bob White and his family.
6) Reddy Fox Goes Fishing - While Reddy Fox sleeps, he dreams he can fish as well as Billy Mink, but Reddy Fox just ends up all wet.
7) Jimmy Skunk Looks for Beetles - As Jimmy Skunk looks for beetles, he doesn't make any friends, but is rather selfish and destructive. However, the adventure really starts when Peter Rabbit decides to help.
8) Billy Mink's Swimming Party - Billy Mink invites Jerry Muskrat and Little Joe Otter to a swimming party at the Smiling Pool.
9) Peter Rabbit Plays a Joke - When Peter Rabbit tries to play a joke on Johnny Chuck and Reddy Fox, the joke back-fires.
10) How Sammy Jay Was Found Out - When Happy Jack's store of nuts disappears, Old Mother West Wind forms a committee of the whole to solve the mystery.
11) Jerry Muskrat's Party - When Jerry Muskrat throws a swim party, many of his guests aren't having any fun. Then, Little Joe Otter comes up with an idea that saves the party.
12) Johnny Chuck Finds the Best Thing in the World - When Striped Chipmunk hears Old Mother West Wind tell the Slender Fir Tree that she's found the Best Thing in the World, everyone starts to search for it--and everyone imagines it as something different.
13) Bobby Coon and Reddy Fox Play Tricks - When Bobby Coon and Reddy Fox trap Johnny Chuck inside his home, Jimmy Skunk helps Johnny Chuck surprise the two of them.
14) The Tale of Tommy Trout, Who Didn't Mind - Though Tommy Trout's mother tried to warn him of the dangers outside of their little pool, Tommy Trout didn't listen.
15) Little Joe Otter's Slippery Slide - When Little Joe Otter, Billy Mink, and Jerry Muskrat build a mud slide on the bank of the Smiling Pool, Peter Rabbit's curiosity gets the best of him.
16) Spotty the Turtle Wins a Race - When Peter Rabbit, Reddy Fox, and Billy Mink decide to race to see who's fastest, Peter Rabbit teases Spotty the Turtle that he should join. Spotty the Turtle does, and uses his mind to win the race.

Busting the Bane of Writer's BlockReview Date: 2004-01-16
For example, under a section entitled "Where to Get Ideas," Glatzer writes: "Another myth is that great ideas are supposed to just come to writers. Like we're all just walking around, minding our own business when wham! A great idea falls out of the heavens and lands in our brains. I, on the other hand, am idea-challenged. The idea fairy rarely visits my home without my asking. I have to invite her, cajole her, and then sometimes bang her over the head with a stick and drag her unconscious body into my abode without my neighbors calling the police. My muse is my mortgage."
Her book, her advice and her writing style will inspire writers everywhere not to give up -- no matter what. Her book is also one that writers will return to again and again if not for advice and support then for a great pick-me-up when the writing gets tough.
Web Guru Shares Experience, Research with WritersReview Date: 2004-01-04
Glatzers's book sets an example for writers because
it is fresh, carefully crafted, and entertaining. There are, to be sure, other books that address writer's block but this
one is far more fun and less dogmatic than most. These are the fraternal twins that let this volume fill a much-needed niche
in advice books for writers.

Great BOOK and a Great INTERVIEWReview Date: 2003-11-19
I believe all writers should now celebrate, because Jenna has written a humorous and practical guide that is chock full of tricks of the trade, versatile tools, and writer's block busting exercises that tackle this problem from all angles.
It's worth more than a quick read, I plan to keep my copy close by so I can refer to it when those 'moments' happen, and more importantly, I consider most of her strategies to be a proactive way to increase my creativity and amount that I write.
I interviewed Jenna Glatzer on "The Inside Success Show" and was captivated by her charm and wit. She's dedicated and a great example of how to proactively manage problems, not just hide from them.
Here's some other things
I learned from Jenna:
** How Jenna Glatzer went from art to acting, and then finally found her creative outlet in a professional
writing career!
** What determines when an idea isn't going to work (in advance)
** Why you need to rid yourself of
myths and rules to write well.
** How to apply relaxation techniques to get back into "the flow"
** What 3 things you
can do optimize your performance as a writer
** And much, much more ...
Whether you're a professional writer needing to jump-start your creativity, a college student needing to meet your deadlines, or a business person who needs to increase output, I believe you will find this book rewarding.

The Blank PageReview Date: 2004-09-07
Just grab a copy of Jenna Glatzer's OUTWITTING WRITER' S BLOCK AND OTHER PROBLEMS OF THE PEN. As an experienced, published writer, Glatzer understands the frustration of having a blank page glare at you. Not only does she understand the frustrations that plague a writer, she has developed a comprehensive and easy to follow guide that offers a multitude of ways to combat the enemies of the creative process.
Glazter wants the writer to understand that a block is nothing to panic about. She considers it an occupational hazard that even the greats have to conquer. Glatzer lets the writer know that hope is not lost when the page continues to remain blank because there are many effective ways of slaying the beast. In each chapter the writer is encouraged to stay one step ahead of the game by examining reasons why writer's block may rear its ugly head. Exploring the psychological causes of a block such as anxiety, self-doubt, along with unreasonable expectations, Glatzer engages the writer to battle the enemy within first. Included with each chapter are creative writing prompts to help get the creative juices flowing once more.
OUTWITTING WRITER'S BLOCK AND OTHER PROBLEMS OF THE PEN is a witty and inspiring way of tackling troublesome roadblocks writers are sure to encounter. From exposing the psychological reasons behind roadblocks to effective ways of eradicating these problems, Glatzer offers encouraging and motivating words to help the writer to write. So whether you are just a novice looking to get that first manuscript completed or an established veteran who needs a little encouragement this is one book no writer should be without.

Superb Portraits!Review Date: 2001-03-14
Before going further, let me observe that the book contains much female nudity that would earn an "R" rating if this were a motion picture.
Glenn O'Brien in the book's introduction captures the essence of the book well, "The beauty standard is being raised once again."
Whether the subjects are beautiful (and many are) or not, the result is the same -- a deep look into the personality and character of the model done in large, vivid detail in wonderfully contrasting duotone. One of the best tests for this book is to compare the celebrity images you see here with others you have seen of these same people. These images are more warm, more revealing, and more fun to see. Mr. Demarchelier has a light touch that gets out the happiest version of a person. You'll find yourself laughing and smiling your way through this collection, for sure.
The portraits displayed here are uniformly of very high quality, and provide nice contrasts of subjects (nose rings, boulders, children, and elephants among the beautiful people).

Great for everyone!Review Date: 2009-05-25
Previously, those of us who are interested in piercing have not had the luxury of being able to access safe advice, expert suggestions, and detailed, accurate information on the options available to us. Now, finally, in one place, we have the ability to learn how to get a safe piercing, how to make the right choice of piercing and jewelry for our individual look and how to care for our piercings so they will remain beautiful.
Working on the idea that an informed piercee has the best chance of a good result, Elayne Angel spares no detail in explaining jewelry choices and sizes, healing methods, healing times, and even stretching and retiring a piercing. Her straightforward, professional style of writing is a great asset. Her honest impressions of her own piercings and some she has encountered in others over her long career in the industry are priceless. There are detailed drawings to help describe the placement of the various piercings and some great charts showing gauge sizes and minimum healing times.
I would highly recommend this book to all.

PMC Technic: A Collection of Techniques for Precious Metal ClayReview Date: 2009-01-18
Worth its weight in PMC gold!Review Date: 2008-12-28
Since PMC is relatively new, artists have had to spend countless hours discovering the limits and capabilities of the material. Having worked so hard to successfully execute a new and complicated technique, an artist might be forgiven for hoarding that hard-won knowledge. Fortunately, that is not the spirit of this book. Each contributor has generously distilled his or her painstaking experimentation into a concise, immeasurably helpful lesson that will enable others to bypass many of the missteps that come with charting new territory.
For me, the most fascinating and helpful chapters were those that dealt with combining PMC with other materials in a way that resolves incompatibility issues. For example, one chapter tells how to prepare sterling silver (through a process known as depletion gilding) to accept PMC additions. Another chapter describes how to include PMC in flameworked beads, explaining along the way how to knead enamels (essentially powdered glass) into PMC to produce a hybrid metal/glass material. Another chapter provides instructions for making delicate bezels from PMC paper, so that even stones unable to be fired along with the PMC can be included in PMC pieces. Yet another chapter shows how to add PMC to glazed or unglazed ceramic pieces, and even includes information on using raku glazes with PMC.
In addition to these mixed-media chapters, there are chapters on making delicate yet functional hinges out of PMC; building up form with PMC slip; making brass or Mylar stencils and using them with PMC; mastering the use of PMC syringe; and water etching PMC (that is, using a resist and washing away portions of the design that are not covered by the resist). There's also a chapter on a clever way to make hollow PMC beads by removing the bead core before firing.
Each topic is illustrated with plenty of gorgeous color photographs of pieces that use the technique in question. Equally valuable are Tim McCreight's detailed, easy-to-understand black and white sketches, which serve to clear up any mystery about the more technical operations. This book is worth its weight in PMC gold.
