Highly recommend!Review Date: 2007-02-05
I particularly liked the examples of grant opportunities for K-12 schools and the list of 101 foundations and corporations interested in giving to K-12 schools. The examples of awarded grant proposals provided in the book show you the proper formats and various writing styles for a winning grant.
As a technology education teacher, I feel the section on writing mini-grants will be very helpful in obtaining future grants to further expand my program.
Having actually applied for and been awarded five mini-grants this year, I feel that Dr. Levenson's book will help me take my grantsmanship to the next level. He provides a blueprint for creating successful school grant writing teams and for obtaining major grants to meet larger needs.

Regarding Science-Ejected Vitalism, 1998:Review Date: 2008-01-21
One of my favorite passages from this book:
"the achievements of molecular biology in the twentieth century proved conclusively that it is not necessary to propose that life processes arise from some nonmaterial vital principle and cannot be explained entirely as physical and chemical phenomena. [E.g.] biological neural networks are created by nature, and the laws of nature should be applicable to them [p.003]."

an excellent defence of agriculture and biotechnologyReview Date: 2002-11-06
I would recommend this book as an antidote to the frightening biotechnology-gone-mad scenarios painted by organisations such as Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth.
This book is a welcome addition to the biotechnology debate.
DeGregori Makes "Bountiful" SenseReview Date: 2002-12-24
In his wonderful new book, aptly entitled BOUNTIFUL HARVEST: TECHNOLOGY, FOOD SAFETY, AND THE ENVIRONMENT, DeGregori carefully integrates human evolution, reason, art, writing, and manufacture as the prerequisites and components of technology. As he has done elsewhere, DeGregori once again promotes the humanity of technology, which is both a phenomenon and process, in defiance of those who would spurn it as a materialistic vice. Early on, he declares that without technology, we pitiful humans would have had to adapt to our environments "by the much slower adaptive process known as speciation [the evolution of different species]." Technology, which is unique to the human species, saved us eons of evolution and gave us to ability to maneuver and develop throughout the world.
DeGregori reminds us that anti-technology evolved "with, and probably before, Plato," who argued that with the creation of the alphabet (and writing), the young would be urged not to rely on their own memory. This in turn founded a viewpoint that we, as humans, somehow "lose something" with every technological advance. He unmasks the insanity (and inanity) of such sophistry in his chapters on food safety, where he cleverly refutes the would-be superiority of "organic foods." Indeed, we created artificial substances to fend off the very toxicities and incapacities, which organic farming reintroduces. The author boldly asserts that a return to purely organic farming might feed one-fifth of the current world population, involving farm output losses of 53 to 100 percent. Moreover, organic fertilizers often are accompanied by graveolent diseases that have been long since stymied, or eliminated, by technological countermeasures. DeGregori is best when he scoffs at the "whole foods" fad, which encourages well-to-do (and well-fed) customers to buy potentially fecally contaminated foods at a 57 percent mark-up!
The fact is that human beings never have, and never will, live in "harmony" with nature because "by nature" humans must transform or, at the very least, disturb environments to make the regions habitable. Without technology, our physically inferior species could only survive in tropical or, at best, subtropical environments. Even the simplest of farmsteads, say, a swidden plot, at least temporarily clears natural vegetation to make way for crop cultivation. The fact is that it is only through the implementation of suitable technologies that humans can minimize the disturbance and the dangers to themselves and their environments.
As Dr. DeGregori has reminded us for decades: never before have so many of us lived such long and such relatively healthy lives. The shortest lived and least healthy among us, as in Africa South of the Sahara, are comparatively miserable precisely because they do not have the technology to meet their needs. It is the ultimate irony that the anti-technologists, who oppose irradiated, genetically altered, and biotechnological foods, are harming the very people--whom they blatantly otherwise claim to defend--who most need the potential bounty of that advanced nutrition. Already bypassed by the Green Revolution, Africans can ill afford to miss the coming revolution in food technology.
Always stimulating and controversial, Dr. DeGregori once again takes up the cross of sensibility against those who make the headlines and only occasionally make sense. BOUNTIFUL HARVEST should be read by economists, geographers, anthropologists, ecologists, and any and all who value their fellow human beings and their environment. Highest rating*****!

Branding for Non ProfitsReview Date: 2008-05-16
Don't Brand Yet! Stop Right Now and Buy This Book First!Review Date: 2006-05-20
Holland writes (page 21), "Unfortunately, many nonprofits are too quick to hand the organization's branding over to an outside consultant and assume a reactive rather than proactive approach to the process. Worse than that, many consultants who work with nonprofits skip the design brief altogether. How can consultants possibly tell your story without you? They answer is they can't--and trying to do so often leads to unwelcome consequences, not the least of which is the possibility that your organization will have to live with an ineffective, half-baked brand,"
The book makes the case that we shouldn't design our brands without really understanding the entire organization and her target audiences. I wish more church graphic designers would take this advice and learn about ministry more before they start whipping out the stock images and funky-rock-and-roll designs. The book shows practical examples of branded collateral, etc. You need this book even if you are not a designer or in charge of the brand management of your organization!
Illustrious Delivery: Theory to Practice for BrandingReview Date: 2007-07-13
With examples surrounded by principles and organized guidelines, the reader will know exactly how to proceed in tackling such an important responsibility.
I purchased copies for eight people on our team assigned to re-brand a 92-year old noble organization. DK Holland's book has illuminated our way to a very successful outcome.
I highly recommend reading this book. It also provides a great lesson for how to organize complex ideas and information.

A wonderful book that will help you create a sound business plan or fix an unsound one!Review Date: 2007-09-02
What a gem of a book. I just loved it. While it is clearly written for executive directors, development directors, and board members of nonprofits to read to learn about branding their nonprofit organizations, I think the book is just as applicable to small and large for-profits. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a nonprofit or business and needs to have a brand identity that potential users, members, donors, customers, or clients can embrace. The book has the following 12 chapters:
1. What's that branding buzz I hear?
2. Anatomy of a Design Brief
3. The roles and responsibilities of the branding team
4. Getting the team ready to birth the brand
5. What designers do and how they do it
6. The design process
7. Arriving at a new brand identiy that everyone can embrace
8. From inspiration to implementation
9. Implementing your new brand
10. Storytelling and the brand
11. Management, staff, and branding
12. On the evolution of branding
This book is very well written and so well organized. It was an incredibly easy read and jam-packed with so much wonderful information. In the Appendix there is a sample branding guide, a sample graphic standards guide, and two sample PPT presentations on branding. They significantly add to the value of the book. And there is also a "Brand Glossary" included.
What I got from this book is that you can put together a sound business plan, and you can provide a wonderful service or product, but you also must seriously think about packaging your nonprofit or business so it can be effectively marketed. And if you follow the steps in this book to brand your nonprofit or business and find you can't create a masterpiece of a brand, then you will discover that you probably don't have a sound business plan or that you don't really provide a wonderful service or product. If you understand what I am saying here, then you will understand how simply marvelous this book is and how helpful it can be to tweeking your idea for an enitity or improving upon your existing going concern. 5 stars!

Silence!Review Date: 2006-07-12
Required ReadingReview Date: 2002-10-09
ASEE had the great honor of reviewing this book in advance of its release. Without question, Breaking the Silence is destined to become THE definitive book on the shocking topic of teacher abuse by corrupt and evil (we're using that term in the most literal sense) school administrators. This horrifying look at what is so prevalent in American schools is based upon genuine research, conducted by respected scholars Drs. Joseph and Jo Blase, from the University of Georgia's, College of Education. Their research was conducted over a three year period, using well established and accepted methods. Essentially everything regarding teacher abuse is covered:
* personal (anonymous) testimonies from research subjects (i.e., abused teachers),
* personality characteristics of corrupt administrators and their innocent victims,
* lack of support from district office personnel,
* refusal of most teachers who work in foul environments to reach out to abused colleagues,
*inability for abused teachers to find legal assistance,
* failure of unions to support abused teachers,
*strategies used by corrupt administrators to enlist "support" for their sick behavior through favoritism with certain staff members, and developing "spy" networks (weak-kneed teachers and staff who "snitch" on those that refuse to compromise their ethical behavior),
* suggestions for those who are currently, or have been, in abusive situations,
* the devastating short and long term impact upon teachers' physical/physiological/psychological health, and
* the overwhelming detrimental effects on schools and society.
The list goes on, and on, and on . . . Without question, this book will not only serve to validate the experiences of abused teachers (the number one comment of those writing to ASEE comes from teachers who, until having visited our site, have felt "alone"), but it is also the first serious work on a topic that has long been regarded as "education's dirty little secret" - severe and intentional infliction of evil on highly competent educators. Still not convinced? Guess who wrote the "Forewords" to the book?
Don Saul,
American Association of School Administrator's
Superintendent of the Year (2000)
and
Dr. Gary L. Anderson,
Professor of Educational Administration
California State University, Los Angeles
Certainly, such esteemed educators, both of whom have a vested interest in school administration (and administrators) must have significant and compelling reasons to lend their support to a study that reveals that members of their peer group are among some of the darkest and most evil members of American society. ASEE was founded by teachers to help expose this evil. We salute these educational leaders for displaying the courage to lend significant professional credence to something that both the news media and society in general have continually ignored.

Read this book and ask a public school teacher how much of it rings true in your schools.
Teachers are the most valuable link in the value chain. They are also at the bottom the totem pole. What way does excrement run?

What causes me to give this book a 5-star rating is its honesty. Most books of this nature try to plug a certain perspective at the risk of almost becoming dishonest. This book simply lays it out. If you become uncomfortable learning that your style of worship is not as universal as you would like, or that your theology hasn't always been central to Christian practice, so be it.
I found myself challenged by the questions I began asking. This is the kind of book I like.
