Very detailed book on all aspects of online investing

This is a very detailed book which covers all aspects on online investing. Most people can skip chapter 1 which shows basic Internet browsing and navigation. The rest of the book shows web pages you can look at. I like this book because the authors highlight and explain the different parts of each of the web pages. At 400 pages, this book is short enough so that you won't get bored and long enough that the author just don't explain a concept in a sentence or a paragraph. The authors give enough detail so that you can understand and profit.

"Teach Yourself Investing Online", by Thomas S. Gray and Claire Mencke, is the ideal book for online investors, both novices and old-timers. The information is easy to understand, easy to read, and very interactive. There are sites to visit, quizzes and worksheets to fill out, and pages and pages of screenshots and sidebars and intriguing reading. This book can be used for quick reference or for straight-forward research. Very up-to-date and needed in this fast-paced Internet world, with online catalogs and stock trading sites, this book is your manual to succeed in this day in age. The book covers such subjects as stock quotes to saving for your child's college fund to shopping online. I was clueless and, frankly, frightened of the stock market and Internet investments before I peeked at these pages -- now I'm hooked, making extra money, and learning how to budget my finances. This book is for young and old investors alike, and it's easy to follow, with clear language and straight-forward visuals. It was obvious to me that these authors know what they're talking about. A must! If you think you could never make it in this busy online investing economy, you need this book! If you think you know all there is to know, you need this book! Finally, I read something I needed so much!

Could Use a Few Tips for Day Trading Online
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 15 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-25
This book was very good back in the "buy and hold years" of 1998-2001. It's still a good read and very enjoyable.

These days, in my opinion, a trader needs more practical and up to date strategies especially if he wants to start day trading online on a regular basis.

Stock trading is all about making buy and sell decisions. When you make a trade either your going to lose money or your going to make money, and some other times you will break even. When you win some body else will lose and so forth, but that's NOT what's important.

The most important aspect of day trading is the "know-how" strategies you employ to make your buy & sell decisions. There are many "surefire" systems outhere, but you need to test them in order to discover which ones help you the most. That's part of your homework as an online stock trader. Test, test and test again.

Complicated systems that rely on a truck load of technical analysis indicators can make you slow, and being slow in this game can be as dangerous as not knowing what to do in the first place.

I think the worst thing that can happen to a beginner trader is to get information OVERLOAD. It's better to go step by step, and test a simple trading system that can show you how to focus on concrete ways to profit day in and day out.

Fortunatly there are some good sites on the web today that can show you how to trade in a practical and effective way. One of those sites is Smart Day Trading (SmartDayTrading com)

In the end, day trading is all about buying and selling according to your knowledge FILTER. Once you master and follow youre proven filter parameters like a clock, you can expect to start making serious amounts of cash on a consistent basis.

Superb classroom resource

As a credentialed sub, I find this an invaluable book.
It is full of historical and scientific tidbits of information, which can be easily introduced to the class as an intro to a substantive lesson, or as interesting filler, and even as the basis of a Jeopardy-type trivia quiz. Each of the book's entries has at least a few sentences of explanation, and some entries (such as Amelia Jenks Bloomer's birthday) expand to a half-page of history and lesson suggestions.
You won't regret getting this book! (Of course, you'd get the current edition now!)

After I purchased the Teacher's Calendar, I stayed up late into the night finding great things to share during the next school year. I shared it with my teaching partner so she and I could plan some activities. She took it on vacation and was going to get it back to me in a few weeks. She wasn't quite finished a few weeks ago. Today, she just called and said she was mailing me a check since she had so much marked - couldn't I just get another one. So, I am gladly purchasing another copy and I can't wait to use it next year. I am really excited that my partner and I see the benefit in the mini-lessons that this book provides on so many subjects.

Attention Educators: AN AWESOME RESOURCE!

Principals, Teachers, School Staff: LISTEN UP!

This book is an AWESOME resource. At our small school (staff of 18), we have a faculty meeting EVERY DAY. We start the day together with prayer (we're a religious-affiliated school), and a brief session with "The Teacher's Calendar." It's a hoot!

We share the trivia, guess at the famous people's birthdates and ages, and use the facts (every now & then) with students.

This can be great for current events, "this day in history" PA announcements, or use the special events to determine your "words for the day" (that's what we do over the PA at the end of every day), or just stay in tune with everyday events.

P.S.: Teachers & Staff: this would make a great "start of the school year" gift for your principal! (hint, hint).

Great Resource!

This will be the second year I purchased this book! I use it every day of the school year as a basis for my grammar lessons. There are multiple historical and current events briefly explained (just a few sentences) for each day of the year. I choose an item that ties into my curriculum, or I just feel the kids should know about, and write it on the board filled with punctuation, spelling, syntax and gramatical errors. The kids are responsible for writing the passage correctly, fixing my errors, then we talk about spelling, homonyms, grammar rules, the subject itself, and I often use it to extend into social studies, science, etc. The other nice thing about the book is there are plenty of ideas and resources for extending into lessons and projects. Just be sure to look ahead in the book so you allow enough time for mail and research! I have all but ignored my other calendar resources because this has all I've needed!

I've recently been forced into the digital revolution. Although I have some knowledge of PCs, it's sometimes a challenge to get my computer to function to its fullest (my fault not the computer's) This book has been wonderful. There is so much useful information here, I'm not sure where to start. My favorite section is "tips and tricks." Tons of stuff on how to get the most from a PC. The book has articles on Web shopping, investing, travel, avoiding ripoffs, the history of the Internet, how to shop for a computer, and plenty more useful stuff about the Web and computers - and here's the part I really like: If I run into a word I don't understand while reading, I can easily flip to the dictionary and look it up. Even with all that, I think my favorite section is the 200 Cool Websites. I've spent hours exploring the Web using it. This is a great reference book!

Analyzing web site traffic is an important aspect of web site management. This book begins with a basic overview of server log files and fundamental web statistics and ends with detailed descriptions of complex applications like dynamically created web pages and advertising networks.

The book offers detailed reviews of software packages and tracking services. The book comes with a CD-ROM that includes fully functional evaluation copies of log analysis programs from a number of companies. The CD-ROM also includes HTML and multimedia presentations from tracking services.

The book is well written and easy to read. It is organized to serve as a ready-reference for questions about web site hits and traffic.

Excellent, comprehensive book on modern era disasters!

Review Date: 2006-02-21
As a welding/metals inspector, I have both a professional and personal fascination with disasters. I own many books on various construction failures but this book remains one of my favorites. I have read this book cover to cover twice now and often find myself going back to it to reference various disasters.
While this book is not technical in nature (I don't believe you'll see any math formulas in the book), it is very comprehensive and straight forward in the explaining the background, details surrounding the failure, and the subsequent impact.
What separates this book from the many competitors is that it covers such a broad range of topics- from airships to medical catastrophes- and everything in between. And it doesn't just cover the famous (or infamous) disasters which have already been poured over ad nauseam. Though it does include the requisite Hindenburg, Kansas City Hyatt, and Titanic disasters, it also touches on the King Street Bridge and the Dalkon shield.

Though the text is a bit pricey, it is worth every penny and makes a wonderful addition to any library, whether an engineer or just someone with an interest in the mechanics of failure.

Requisite Reading

Review Date: 2000-07-05
A most excellent compilation. Thought provoking and sobering material. Should be requisite reading for any Engineer, Project Manager, Operations Director, etc. Would especially recommend it as required reading for Engineering Students. The work often chronicles how various failures were first attributed to the most apparent superficial causes (i.e., the easy fix), but then only after several more failures were the root causes finally investigated, often at great cost both financially and in terms of human cost. Makes you wonder the next time you rush a project, cut some corners, eat away some margin, take some risks, etc...

An absolute "must read" for all technical professionals

A truly riviting book about the many failures of modern time. I couldn't put it down! This book fills in the details of many of the major disasters and accidents that you have read about in the news but provides the reader with the reasons that the technology failed. It's technically accurate without being overly complex. It explains not only what happened in each of the failures, but provides information on why it happened. I found the section on environmental accidents to be thought provoking and insightful. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone working in a technical field.

Providing a wealth of information needed to succeed in the writing industry, *Writer's Guide...* is an excellent tool for both aspiring and established writers. A most successful literary agent and author, Jeff Herman possesses a thorough knowledge of the industry which he shares an in-depth volume for writers. In the late 1970s, Herman made a living by cleaning public toilets. Just a decade later, he launched what would become the most credible and successful literary agency in the United States. His laborious efforts that paved his way to success have been channeled into his work, cutting out multiple steps and energies for other writers. As he writes, "The publishing business is a mysterious place, even for veteran (writers)...This book will help you to break the code, unmask false wizards, and empower you to challenge the obstacles." In an industry where nepotism and knowing the right person seems to be the only way to get published, Herman's work encoura! ges and inspires writers to remain persistent and optimistic. He states, "Growth and success cannot be known by those who give up or fail to even try." His own rags to wealth story lends credibility to this statement. In over 550 pages, Herman lists a multitude of United States publishers, University and religous publishers, as well as Canadian publishers, who are all anxious for innovative writing and new ideas. Each publisher listing provides the address and telephone number of the publishing house, a brief history of the company, the types of books published and several sample titles of recently published works. Writers are also provided with the contact names of whom they need to query. In the case of larger publishers, each editor is listed with a brief description of what he or she is looking to publish, so that writers may send their work to the correct individual. The only drawback to Herman's publisher description is that he does not provide information on ! which publishers accept manuscripts only from agents. There! fore, *Writer's Guide...* is best used by cross-referencing the book with *Writer's Market.* However, for the writers who wish to minimize their solicitation efforts, Herman provides an agent listing of about 200 pages. These listings provide thorough information on the agents such as their work experience, preferred clients, works sold, what they prefer to and not to market as well as a brief statement giving advice to writers on soliciting manuscripts. Also provided is the commission fees of the agents and, in a few cases, reading fees. Following the listings, Herman and company have written various articles geared toward increasing a writer's chances for success. For example, the writer will find advice on how to properly contact agents and publishers, how to write the perfect query letter, how to write book proposals, how literary agents work, as well as many other useful article that will keep the writer inspired, optimistic and informed. A writer without the *Writer's G! uide...* is comparable to a traveler without a map. Except for writing the manuscript, Jeff Herman has done all the laborious work for the writer. By utilizing the tools provided by Herman, the writer will save many hours of aggravation and wasted effort.

Blagev is bad!

I thought the book was absolutely wonderful, but I must comment on the writing style of the previous review, Denitza Blagev. I think her writing is awful, but her terrible writing (especially the creative stuff), only serves as a contradistinction from the brilliant writing in the internship book.

Maybe Ms. Blagev should try a writing internship. Then her writing might be more pallitable.

Finding an internship can be strenuous, but not with John Anselmi's easy-to-use guide. Anselmi's style is efficient and beautiful. His insight, top-notch. If John Anselmi were here right now, I would like to play a little jazz trumpet for Anselmi. He is the best, the best, the best. In fact, his thoughts are so original, so intriguing, I would like to subscribe to his newsletter. Thank you, undefeated, undisputed, King of internships!

How do I live without Anselmo? I want to know...

I don't know how much longer I can make it. The sand in my internship hourglass is quickly running out. I make my copies and open the mail now with an anxious eye on the clock, knowing that only a few precious days separate me from the comfortable world of the internship and the prospect of trying to get a real job. With that blasted internship interview, I had Anselmo. Without him, I don't know where this cruel process will take me. My days have lengthened into long, dark periods of listless wandering. I arrive home from my internship, and stare at the peach hued walls of my ugly eighties themed apartment, and wonder, "where in God's name is Anselmo when you need him?". If it has been a good day, and I have been able to muster enough petty cash to buy a small bottle of Karkov Vodka, I am usually able to drive the terrible thought of facing life after internships without Anselmo in three or six quick, putrid shots. But on normal days, those very numerous, substance

free normal days, I stare at the television, muttering...hoping that his wise but kind face will appear. Hours of syndicated garbage later...I fall asleep, disappointed, dejected, and unwilling to face the morning. Where have you gone Frank Anselmo? Interns turn their lonely eyes to you..whoo, whoo, whoo. God Bless you please Mr. Internship, Frank Anselmo's left and gone away, hey, hey, hey.. So, like General Zod in the sequal to an American classic, I demand to see Superman! I must enter the real world and I demand guidance, and I want it from the man who brought me so much success in the realm of the internship. Nothing else, nothing less, will do. The last time around, I had chapters like "So...You're a Philistine", "Places To Live In NYC if Mummy Won't Pay", and "Dealing with Blasted Lunches: An Intern's Guide to Gastronomy". You remember the magic? I do, and I want more of what Anselmo's cooking. So dust off your keyboard King of Internship Kings, give another Bible, Lord of Entry-Level Lords. We need you. I...need you.

A fantastic gripping tale of the kinds of internships to get

This is the most incredible book in the whole wide world. What a page turner! I couldn't put it down. The anecdotes by Mattew Weissler, Denitza Blagev, and Melanie Schoenberg were particularly helpful. The YDN's head copy editor, Dorie Boufides told a gripping tale of her lust and deceit in her San Francisco Opera internship. John Anselmi, the editor, gave me hope that there might be a job out there, even for me. What a gifted crew to put this book together.

Big but full of information

This directory is HUGE, and filled with adds but I can't imagine setting off on a long trip without it. Calling ahead, or reserving a spot online is such a good idea when you are driving or pulling a large trailer. It really pays to have an idea of what you are getting into before you get there. If you are arriving later in the day to an area you are unfamiliar with this directory is a necessity.

The book is huge. It lists everything I have searched for so far. We are going on our first outting in a few weeks so will see if the parks are as described.
I think this will be a big help because we just go and see where we land.
It gives great discriptions of the parks and the amps etc so heres hoping.

Although there are many RV campsites along the roadway a publication such as this gives the RVer the information of various RV campgrounds and their amenities so an informed decision can be made when selecting a good place to stop. This publication with its comprehensive information makes it easy to find a campground in any state. Selecting a campground is a breeze and that adds to the enjoyment of RVing.

There really is no better reference for finding a talent agent than this book. It's so detailed in listing all the agents. It tells you what kind of talent they represent and whether or not they see new clients. It tells you projects they've worked on and gives real contact addresses and phone numbers. It's a goldmine for networking.
