Art History Books

Filled with lovely photographs, this book is both entertaining and educational. It gives a brief history of the whys and wherefores of the burial practices in southern Louisiana, as well as describing how the tombs are cared for in the present. It also makes a great guide, if one is planning to visit the cemeteries in and around New Orleans. Easy to read, but never insulting to one's intelligence, this book gives a fascinating view of the cities of the dead.

We travel to and through Louisiana quite a bit. Because of this, I tend to pick up books about Louisiana, particularly Louisiana history. I bought this book because I liked the pictures. However, once I began reading this book, I realized that there was much more to the cemeteries than interesting statues. I can honestly say that I enjoyed reading this book and found it as informative as it was interesting.

This book begins with an introduction about cemeteries in Louisiana and then covers different cemeteries in Louisiana. Generally there is a history of the cemetery, an accounting of some of the more famous people buried in each cemetery and a lot of information.

For someone visiting Louisiana, particularly someone who is considering a tour of the cemeteries, this book is a must.

I would never have went to New Orleans without visiting at least one of the famous above ground cemeteries - I was not disappointed! The history behind them is fascinating. They're built above ground, so that when there is any kind of flooding, the bodies don't float away since New Orleans is 700?ft below sea level. What was really neat to me though, is that one tomb, could and would be used for many generations of the same family. I thought it was a comforting thought to know that you wouldn't be burried alone, but in the exact same place as your ancestors. I think New Orleans people celebrate death, not that they're glad someone is gone, but that they're glad they had the chance to live and love them! There is just a kind of magic about the cemeteries, especially St. Louis #1, the oldest cemetery in the area. The photo's in this book capture that magic! Unfortunately, the section on #1 is small. This book includes many of the cemeteries including St. Louis 2 and 3, and Metairie, which is one of the nicest and most [costly] ones. I highly recommend this book for it's information and photography! If you go to see #1, it is in a not-so-good crime area that is improving, but make sure you go with a tour! The tour guides always have some interesting extra info!

Rob Florence's book is hands-down the best book on New Orleans cemeteries I have found--and, believe me, I've looked. I'm researching cemeteries. Not only is there tons of information, but he has also included personal stories of people who have loved ones entombed as well as of some who are entombed. I had the pleasure of meeting Rob Florence recently, and he is a walking and talking encyclopedia of knowledge. If you're taking a trip to New Orleans, sign up now to take one of his tours through Historic New Orleans Tours. You won't be disappointed. Before you do that, though, BUY THIS BOOK to take along with you!

I was very pleased with this book and read it from cover to cover.Besides having a fascinating text it's loaded with beautiful pictures, including a set of pictures of Anne Rice doing a publicity shoot in one of New Orleans's cemeteries.I really wasn't that familiar with the history of the burial grounds in New Orleans and I learned a LOT from this book. I would strongly recommend it to anyone who's into cemeteries, funeral history, and Anne Rice!

This is a good reference for Nightmare on Elm Street fans and collectors. It contains both color and B&W still photos, lots of trivia and behind the scenes facts, etc.

I wish they'd update this and bring into a full-color format with a more modern media-centric look, and add material From New Nightmare and Freddy vs. Jason. As it is, it covers up through Freddy's Dead, the Final Nightmare, and is relatively complete.

It's hard to come by, but is great for the completist if you can get your hands on a copy.

This is the ultimate collectors item for any Nightmare fan. A good variety of pictures from each of the movies (Nightmares 1 thru Freddy's Dead), plus some good insight into some of the special FX that went into the movies.

The only real problem I had was, if your a devoted NOES fan like I am, you will notice a lot of minor mistakes throughout the book. For instance, Lisa, from Nightmare 2, is listed as Lisa Poletti, but in the movie her name is Lisa Webber.

Other than the few minor mistakes, this book is definetly worth picking up!

I actually enjoyed reading this book. The author gave several examples of less than lethal weaponry. I highly recommend this book.

Dynamic read by an obviously well read and very concerned former military officer. Deeply philosophical book where a controversial subject is approached with the language of a poet and outlook of a shaman. Morehouse addresses the military industrial complex in a manner far removed from conventional warriors--a must read.

A great book, although technically out of my league. I did enjoy the philosophical approach to the establishment of current global military and indistrial conditions, as well as the fictional introduction of the non-lethal weapons into the battlefield. It was a difficult subject, but the author did a great job of writing it so that all of us could follow the logic and the dream. If you want the world to change its waring ways then this book is a grand start.

After reading Psychic Warrior I felt as if David Morehouse was more then just an author - it was if he was one/all of us (since that bullet could have hit anyone)- and now I'm wanting very much to read "Nonlethal Weapons" because I believe this author has been given quite a gift! Yet at this price very few will ever be able to read it - and if there's anyone out there reading this I need to find a used copy so I can be one of the lucky ones to view Morehouse's thoughts & feelings.

I recently listened to the author lecture at a Carmel, California bookstore and was facinated by his intellect and wisdom which seemed to be without limits. To be perfectly honest, he didn't recommend this book himself. He jokingly referred to it as a "technological sleeper" wroght with historical analysis and theory. He even balked at the price. However, I was so intrigued by his manner that I couldn't help myself, I ordered it. It is highly philosophical, theoretical and analytical all in one work. I have no technical background, I'm an artist and school teacher, but I found the book easy to read. It is an inspiring work, especially since it was written by a man who once spent his life as a soldier. Buy this book and catch a hopefull glimpse into the future of conflict resolution, and then do what you can to help make what he says a reality.

Judy Stone is disarmingly engaging, a trait and quality that has endeared her to many of her fascinating subjects for attention in this thoroughly embracing and terrific journey of conversations and commentary with (incredibly!) 120 filmmakers, writers, and artists from every continent and culture. Reading the stories I felt an unusual intimacy, often forced or lacking in standard interview formats, with stilted questions or stock inquiries, which Stone adeptly avoids. She enables the person to reveal themselves without it seeming intrusive. Her remarkable, incisive curiosity and talent spans generations (from pre-WW2 to the present) and genres, revealing not only what we previously didn't know about the artist or subject, but also illustrating how a creative life is imperative. Not Quite a Memoir: Of Films, Books, the World

Judy Stone's Not Quite a Memoir is the printed equivalent of one of those late-night pub conversations in which the world's great thinkers get together and come up with viable solutions for all the world's problems. I have nothing to add. It's a very good quality title. If you now "Water margins", and you like it, you will have a fun with this book.

The prints in this book are fantastic, large with great color reproduction. It also an excellent read for anyone interested in japanese woodblock printing. An all round excellent book.

Of all the superb books published by Hotei on the subject of Japanese woodblock prints, Inge Klompmakers' "Of Brigands and Bravery: Kuniyoshi's Heroes of the Suikoden" is far and away my favorite. This reflects not only my enthusiasm for the 19th-century artist Kuniyoshi but also an appreciation of the rich symbolism embedded in his treatment of the "Suikoden" heroes.

The "Suikoden" (the term is the Japanese rendition of the original Chinese title of "Shuihu zhuan") is a epic Chinese novel that is known in English as both "The Water Margin" and "All Men are Brothers." The novel, which lionizes an outlaw band of 108 men who commit crimes on behalf of the common people, was first translated into Japanese in the late 18th century. In the 19th century, a reworking of the novel brought it to an even wider Japanese audience, and at this juncture a number of leading print artists--including Hokusai and Yoshitoshi--illustrated it. However, it is the treatment of the bandits by Kuniyoshi--who depicted 75 of the 108 heroes--which has enjoyed the most enduring popularity and influence.

In the original Chinese novel, six of the 108 bandits are described as tattooed. In Kuniyoshi's series, covering just 75 of the bandits, that number was expanded to 15, and Kuniyoshi's "Suikoden" series became the leading evolutionary influence on Japan's complex style of tattooing.

Recently the "Suikoden" has enjoyed a major renaissance of popularity. Kuniyoshi's prints are revered by the international tattooing community, and the novel itself has inspired a series of fantasy games. Beyond these considerations, it is worth examining Kuniyoshi's accomplishment within its historical context. In the late 19th century, the Japanese enjoyed increased access to literature from abroad, had an urbanized population that supported a vigorous publishing industry, and perfected the technology of woodblock printing. These three developments jointly produced an extraordinary marriage of text and art, a marriage that enriches us all today.

The cover even makes me kind of wonder. Its paperback although the pages are pretty durable. I like the little stories about each character. The pictures are breathtaking and beautiful.

As you might know, Japan was closed off from the rest of the world for around 200 years (Up to 1868!). One of the few countries that kept up close economical ties with Japan throughout that time was Holland (Europe).

That is probably one explanation why in Holland you will find large collections of Japanese Art, and also why the University of Leiden (a city in Holland) has got a very good reputation world-wide for all Japanese-related studies.

The publishing company of this book, Hotei Publishing (www.hotei-publishing.com), is also based in Leiden and has over the past few years managed to create an excellent reputation for itself regarding Japan-related publications. I have about a dozen of their books, and can wholeheartedly recommend all of them.

My interest in Japanese woodblock prints started because of my love for traditional Japanese tattooing. Doing a little research on Japanese tattooing, one will eventually come across the great ukiyo-e Master Kuniyoshi, on whose prints most of the traditional tattoo designs are based.

If, like me, you want to delve deeper into the history of those designs: this book is a must-have. For the untrained eye it will at first be difficult to see the connections between the prints and the tattoos - but after a while you will understand better.

If, on the other hand, you are "only" interested in Kuniyoshi and/or his Suikoden prints: this book is also a must-have for you! The prints are re-produced in large size and full colour.

Besides, you get background information regarding the technique of woodblock prints, Kuniyoshi's life, his work, how the Suikoden prints came about, and a lot more.

If you would also like to see how some of those prints where "transferred" onto human skin, I can recommend the following books to you: 1. Takahiro Kitamura, "Bushido - Legacies Of The Japanese Tattoo", Schiffer Publishing, (over 200 photographs of works by one of today's greatest tattoo masters: Horiyoshi III). 2. Sandi Fellman, "The Japanese Tattoo", Abbeville Press.

Hyperion released this book in October 1997, and it includes the "GH" spinoff, "Port Charles." Its author, who says he's been a "GH" fan since 1978, has also written "The Soap Opera Book of Lists" and "The Soap Opera Encyclopedia." Calling it a "trivia book" would seem to reduce its relevance and substance, as it really is a wealth of behind-the-scenes info about the show. The book includes black-and-white stills from ABC scattered throughout (it's sanctioned by ABC Daytime Press). Chapters feature celebrity appearances on the show, famous fans of the show, real-life romances of the stars, real-life names of the stars and more. The book's contents are also indexed at the end. (Oh, and there ARE a few "trivia" quizzes at the end of chapters!)

I heard of that abc T. V. show called, "General Hospitol."

This book has a lot of the show history along with trivia questions. Yes, the answers are included *grin*. If you are a long time viewer, you will enjoy going back over the highlights thru the years. The trivia questions are fun to test your knowledge of the soap.

For new viewers, this is a great way to catch up on past story of your favorite characters. See why Luke and Cassadines have fueded. Learn about Laura and her mother Leslie. There are several pictures from the show, but be aware, they are black and white.

I am the list owner of a GH fan group and I use this book to give weekly questions to the list. The members love seeing who will send in the correct answer first. Some who have viewed for many years have been stumped on occassion.

If GH is your show, this book is a must. It would make a really nice gift for someone you know who is a fan, too.

Great book whether you are from Texas or not. The author's artwork is superb and gives you the real feelings of these "old Texas friends". The stories are right out of history and very entertaining. Whether you are young or old, the past is always a great place to visit and Mr. Morgan's book is a wonderful time machine with which to travel there. Highly recommended.

The prose is remarkably uplifting and allows one to look at history in a unique fashion. The stories are interesting and some local people with firsthand knowledge about one particular story told me the article was correct to the letter. The drawings are amazingly accurate to the finest detail. An excellent gift for the upcoming holidays. Your friends or relatives would greatly appreciate this book.

This book provides an entertaining historical account of the grand old courthouses of Texas. The author takes you back to days when the county seat was the center of activity and the letter of the law was a bit dusty. The drawings are spectacular in detail as are the tall tales of Texas lore. It is an excellent gift book and very reasonably priced.

This is a fascinating work on a fairly esoteric topic. Although I usually don't usually encounter such works unless I am looking up specific information, I came across this book and had a difficult time putting it down. The illustrations are a magical blend of art and fact. When I have visited the courthouses, I felt as if I had been there - from both the prose and the drawings. If this topic (Texas history and culture) sounds interesting, get the book - you'll love it. If you are not sure, get the book - you'll love it. This will make a wonderful gift.

If you grew up on or currently live on a farm this is an interesting read. Even if a farm life is not your experience this book gives great insight to farm life before all the modern conveniences became common. You will enjoy it. Once upon a Farm

We bought this and "Christmas on the Farm" especially for our grandchildren who love farm animals. They thoroughly enjoy reading these books with Grandpa and talking about the wonderful pictures. What a great contribution to remembering things the way they used to be. Thank you Bob Artley!

Bob Artley is so talented and gives you the feeling you are back on the farm again. Brought out so many wonderful memories that I had forgotten. Great book!

My mother is in her eighties and her dictum has become (for gifts),
if I can't wear it, eat it or spend it, don't give it to me. I
broke the rule when I gave her this book for Christmas, and she
loved it so much it brought tears to her eyes.

Bob Artley came from a town not more than 50 miles from my home
town and his age is not that far from the mother's age, and since
my mother also grew up on a farm, going through the book was like
going back into her own very real time. Unlike Mr. Artley and
probably nearly all girls who live on farms today, my mother did
not do chores connected with the farm. That was a guy-thing.
Girls worked in the house. Period. But she certainly had
brothers a-plenty who did those very same things in very similar
ways as did Mr. Artley. The illustrations are wonderful,
so realistic you can almost smell the hay, and other things
not quite so fragrant connected with farms.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever lived on a farm, lived near a farm, driven by a farm. It is a document of
a way of life that is swiftly leaving the scene, more's the
pity. It should also be in school libraries.
Even very young children can get a real sense of what it was like
to live on a farm through the marvelous illustrations

This is a beautiful book written by a writer and illustrator who grew up on an Iowa farm in the 1930's as the "age of the horse" was giving way to the "age of the tractor." The author, Bob Artley, illustrates with detailed sketches and color drawings of such things as walking through the spring mud from barn to barn carrying a bucket of feed, a birds eye view of the farmstead, one of father and son cleaning oat seed with a hand powered fanning mill, planting corn behind a team of horses, milking a cow the old fashioned way, the details of a cream separator, threshers at harvest time and much more. Mr. Artley writes a description of the work they did, what was hard, what was fun and a few of his personal memories of the feelings that he as a child had living this life. It is a touching book written with love and realism describing a lifestyle that has passed by. I especially loved his description of the barn chores where each cow had her chosen place where they were fed silage topped with ground oats and linseed oil, and where they would bed down in the straw with their heads in the stanchions feeding on clover hay. Mr. Artley is not overly sentimental in his memories. He also explains the distastefulness of cleaning out the gutters, working in the cold and the heat etc. He gives us a balanced look at farm life prior to telephones, electricity and indoor plumbing. This is a wonderful book for both those who also experienced farm life in the 1930's as well as younger people like myself who are simply interested in the lives of an older generation.

Get this book if language interests you. I'm studying linguistics, and had to buy this book, but I'm genuinely facinated by every aspect of this topic. It is very well put together, and an intriguing read. I'll have this book long after the term is over ;)

I must say that this book is genuinely exciting. In this case, you may judge the book by the cover (I think the cover's pretty nifty, anyway).

I guess you have to be into this sort of thing (linguistics) to pick up this book in the first place, but once you do, don't be afraid to read it straight through. You won't be disappointed. You learn so many interesting tidbits (and they actually have come in handy a few times). I also suggest THE MOTHER TONGUE, by Bill Bryson (come on, it's fun, even if some of the content is questionable). Together with this book you'll be a language whiz.

ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE isn't only for geeks, mind you. There's a helpful index at the back and if you want to learn more about a word or a particular age in our language's history, it's no trouble.

A la fin, this book is worth however much money it costs. It's really, really super.

Every aspect of the English languageis presented clearly and delightfully. Why does "ea" have three different pronunciations in "dream," "thread," and "great"? How did the Danish conquest of Engliand affect words like "sky" and "egg"? What words did the Roman Latin leave in English? Pyles writes great English himself.

Like Josh, I had to buy this book for the History of English course in the Linguistics dept at Portland State University. My instructor was Prof. Jennifer Mittelstaedt in 2006. Also like Josh, I know this "textbook" is a keeper that will stay in my home library as a professional resource, long after I graduate. Beautifully designed with pretty cover and crisp font/layout. (Expensive, but a nice book that gives pleasure to read & hold.) Organized into easily digestible and somewhat independent sections; the many verb-class & declension tables are clearly explained. Easy to pick-and-choose which chapters to assign, if time constrained. Fascinating historical linguistics & splendid etymologies, presented with surprising humor. The writers' "voice"(s) exude a warm, mature amusement at the vicissitudes of human history - and there is certainly an abundance of vicissitude in the history of the English language! Covers morphology, semantics, syntax, and phonology of OE, ME, EModE & PDE periods. Highly recommended!

"sklon'yat'... vo vs'ekh pad'ezhakh" -- "to decline (someone) in all the cases", so the Russian idiom goes. To discuss someone at length. Few speakers of modern English would make much sense of that idiom. Yet English was once nearly as inflected as Russian, having in common five of that language's six noun cases: the Nominative, Accusative, Genitive, Dative, and Instrumental, each with corresponding pronominal and adjectival declension. Old English nouns had gender, too, and not just masculine and feminine as in the "Romance" (Italic) Languages, but, like Russian, the neuter as well. English verbs once required more complex conjugation, and the subjunctive was used far more extensively than today. Old English structurally resembled modern European languages, and until comparatively recently, even had formal and informal second-person address. The reason for these similarities? Six modern language groups all descended from a common ancestor, Indo-European. They include Indo-Iranian (Farsi, Hindi, Romani), Balto-Slavic (Lithuanian, Russian, Polish), Celtic (Gaelic, Cornish, Welsh), Italic (French, Spanish, Roumanian), Germanic (German, Icelandic, Norwegian), and Hellenic (Greek). English is a sub-group of the Germanic branch. This book is a fascinating technical study of how English developed and changed over the centuries and was influenced by various languages and regional dialects. Learn the reasons for the varying pronunciations of our vowel combinations and consonant clusters that drive ESL students nuts! This is a scholarly study. But you don't have to be a linguist to enjoy the text. Even the most etymologically "challenged" will easily see some distinctive similarities between Old and modern English and other Indo-European languages. BTW, that Russian idiom? We English speakers would discuss someone "every which way".

This book covers a lot of territory and is essential to learning the fundamentals of space suit engineering. Not only does Mr. Harris trace the history of the space suit, he also discusses practical engineering matters. This book contains rare photographs in addition to drawings by the author that illustrate the space suit components, assemblies, and concepts. I have read most other popular books on space suits, but this one packs the most information by far. This book is logically segmented and can be used as an excellent reference. For a true appreciation for the challenges of space suit engineering, this is the book to get.

If you want to REALLY learn a lot about the development of suits, the technical tradeoffs and see how the bidding process and internal conflicts helped and hindered the US suit evolution, BUY THIS BOOK.

Hardcover is the choice, as you'll read this over and over. There's a lot here, you'll want to read it in installments. Rockets are flashy, but spacesuits protect the men that went into space.

I work for Caterpillar and we deal with these: the advantage (and trade-offs) of choosing a set technical path / solution and how this impacts the later generations of any product. It applies to everything we use and buy, but it's REALLY intersting to see for a spacesuit.

Mr. Harris has written an excellent book on the history of the EVA suit. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in the design of EVA suits and how they got to where they are today. Mr. Harris goes into enough detail to allow you to understand how the various suits work (both pros and cons) but not so much as to bore the reader. For those who want more detail, there is an extensive list of resources in the book. In short, if you want to learn about EVA suits, buy this book and read it.

The author also outlines the intricate procedure followed by NASA in contracting a space suit. NASA doesn't select a space suit; it selects a conractor. It involves a whole range of considerations such as cost, integration of the PLSS and suit, who were the contractor's key personnel, design and test philosophy of the contractor, certfication method, prior experience, who the subcontractors were, scheduling and delivery, and how compatible the suit system is with the spacecraft. In addition, blatant national political factors more than likely affected contractor selection; how much money was NASA already spending in the respective states of the suit competitors, who were the states' representatives and did NASA owe the representative any potical favors?

This volume is Bible of the space suits, covered in over 500 pages in fine print. It addresses almost all issues relating to the EVA suit in one volume. It is perhaps the only source book of space suits. It is rare occassion that an entire volume of the AAS History Series is devoted to a single topiuc, which indeed is an honor to the author. In Indian context, may be the ISRO has no plans to design a space suit, since there are no plans of any manned space mission as of today, but eventually it will have. This book will serve as a reference in design specification and technical details of the various types of EVA suits and their suitability for a particular mission.

Bound in blue hard cover as usual, the book has a illustration of the Litton RX-5A hard suit being demonstrated on a simulated lunar surface.

Gary Harris wrote the most precise and complete space suits book ever. I thought I knew some about space suits design, but after reading "The Origins and Technology of the Advanced Extra-Vehicular Space Suit" I learned a lot more. This book is so interesting and passionate about the history and development of advanced EVA suits. Full of good photos and explanatory drawings it is a MUST for any serious reader interested in space suits. The book also cover technical issues, so it is useful for the engineer, scientist and student.
I predict this book will become a classic for life support systems and EVA engineers in the years to come.
