Being a native of Ýzmir (Smryna in Greek) and grandson of a family that had to fled from 1910s Greece due to Balkan War, I couldn't stop my tears while reading this master piece of Sotiriou. Shame on the fanaticism and hatred still injected to young brains at the two coasts of the Aegean sea. This book should be made part of compulsary reading to all Greek or Turkish students. So that our politicians will understand that "you can't separate flesh from bone". Regards, Atýnç Özkan

An excellent book about people, ethnicity, and nationalism

As a Greek-American whose grandfather and grandmother were born in Proussa, Asia Minor (modern day Bursa), I read this book with great interest. It made me feel fortunate to be born in the U.S., with old world hatreds left behind. And it was great reading a Greek book where the Turks weren't described as barbarians. In fact, many of the Greek generals and political leaders came across as the real villains and buffoons. The book teaches and reminds us that people usually get along, at least until nationalism and patriotism get in the way. A great book to read, especially with the Kosovo and Bosnia and Congo in the background.

A masterpiece!

Actually, I read this book seven years ago, in 1993. Being a Turkish and having heard enough about "never-ending" Turkish-Greek problems from both sides, it was really good to hear somebody crying out about how close we were. A "must" for young brains, both Turkish and Greek. The truth is not what the politicians tell us. Just read the book! Thank you Ms. Soteriou.

Poignant echo of the painful past

This is vital, poignant reading for anyone with an interest in the truth of the Asia Minor events pre-1922. About 1.5 million Pontian Greeks were murdered by the Young Turks during World War I, a statistic that's hushed by the Turkish government, or else waved away with the excuse that many people died during the war. If you've ever been to Anatolia, you'll know that the Greeks (and the Armenians) flourished there for thousands of years before the Osmanlis conquered the land. But conquer they did, and in the process, the land is seeped in the blood of the dhimmi (the ones whose land they conquered). So now what? All we can do is acknowledge the horrific truth of what went down in the nationalistic fervor of Mustafa Kemil Ataturk's plans; and honor those who lost their lives so horrifically. And yes, those plans were urged on by the Germans, let's not forget that, and yes, perhaps the Greeks were foolish to press back into Asia Minor to try to reclaim lost ground, but nonetheless, we must not deny the larger truths of all the lives, and all the blood, that were taken by the Turks. Consider this book a memoir from one of the few voices with enough strength to recall this painful past of fallen humanity. And, buy the book and give it to your local library, since the book is out of print in the US and virtually impossible to find. Let others read it, share the story so that such horror never again happens.

The Emotions of a Writer's Life
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-08-06
I picked up this book to browse, not really knowing what to expect. The title seemed like one of those "secrets-of-writing"-type books that offer nothing new.

In reality, I had just inadvertently picked up the most influential book of my writing career.

This isn't a book about HOW to write, such as character development, writing technique or grammar usage, marketing, etc. This book is about the EMOTIONS that writers must deal with, and ways to cope successfully.

For instance, "Virginia Woolf suffered 'acute nervous tension' whenever she neared the end of a novel."

And...

"One friend of mine has been working on her book for nearly fifteen years. She even went to a therapist to learn why finishing it felt like death."

Still yet...

"Many writers, I suppose, are not 'born writers.' They work. On the other hand, what my sister did not understand is the obsession to create. Writers need to write. That's why you panic at the completion of a play or novel. When you aren't writing you aren't certain you exist."

The text is packed with information about famous writers, their habits, their emotions, how they lived--or sometimes died because of NOT coping successfully with the emotional roller-coaster that is a writer's life.

If all my books were lost in a natural disaster, this is the FIRST one I would replace--because it's the only book that truly discusses what living a "writer's life" REALLY means--'the ecstacy and the agony'.

However, unlike the title suggests, "For Writers Only", this book is essential reading for anyone who LOVES a writer, as it explains what the writer is going through emotionally during the various stages of writing.

Not all writers feel these emotions. As Ms. Burhham notes above, some writers just work. But, for those of us who equate writing with breathing, read this book!

This book is an outstanding source of inspiration and encouragement to writers of any age or at any stage of their writing career. Unlike many 'how to' books I've read, this one does not tell give tips on style, grammar or content. It does provide the reader with the incentive to continue writing and never give up. It makes one realize that we are not alone. Even the greatest of authors has suffered from Writers Block, despair and discouragement. At the age of five I said, "When I grow up, I'm going to be a writer." Well into my teens, I was an avid reader and dabbled in writing every spare moment I had. When it was time for college, I majored in Journalism and was active in writing for the school newspaper. However, as a young adult, I got caught up with 'the real world' and due to lack of inspiration, time constraints, and countless other excuses, I never realized my dream. Finally, in the Autumn of my years my first novel is well underway and I anticipate a completion date by the summer of 2000. Sophy Burnham's book has given me the inspiration to pursue my dream. My highest recommendation to ALL writers regardless of whether they are just beginning their endeavor or are already successful authors.

If you could only read one book on writing, this would be the one. A friend gave this book to me several years ago, and I've used it for inspiration more than any other book on writing that I own... and I own a lot of books on writing.

I'm using it in a workshop this weekend and I'll recommend it to the people there, as I recommend it to every person who thinks they want to write.

I have read others books by the author and throughly enjoyed them. However, when it came to this book I was doubtful. I have read so many books about how to write or about writing; they were either boring, dry, or not helpful. This book was not boring or dry and it was extremely helpful. I could not put this book down; I highly recommend this book to any one who is interested in writing.

Not a how-to book but infinitely satisfying, Ms. Burnham deals with the emotional phases that writers share. She punctuates her experiences (written in brief stand-alone paragraphs, suitable to dipping into on any page) with quotes by other writers and artists. Uplifting, encouraging, helpful, I would recommend this book for every writer at any stage in his/her career.

Get Organized, Get Published is an excellent book by Cleaning and Time Management Guru Don Aslett and Carol Cartaino. The book contains tons of information on organization for the aspiring writer to the seasoned pro.

One of the greatest benefits from reading this book is the motivation it provides. When reading, you can't help but want to get to working on your writing projects. And once you get organized and get started, all you need to do is follow the advice in chapter 14 and Don't Stop!

Besides the tips, suggestions, and strategies that Aslett and Cartaino present, they have also included many quotes from published authors regarding the organization, time management, and writing strategies they have used to succeed. If just one of these gems helps you succeed, and I'm sure the combination of all the strategies in this book, if followed and acted upon, will, then the book will be worth more than its weight in gold.

I personally spent the last year focusing on dvds rather than writing projects. This year, my goals include doing a lot more writing. I pulled this book off the shelf to read again to assist me in making 2008 great. The motivation from this book will get me back to the keyboard, and the organization and time management strategies will ensure I reach my writing goals.

Thanks Don and Carol for a great book!

An excellent resource for creative but disorganized writers

OK, I have to admit, I am a published writer for 22 years, as a journalist and commentator. Yet, despite my many promises to myself, I have not moved myself to the stage where I can proudly add AUTHOR to my list of achievements. Why? I have enough material to publish some collected work type books, and enough ideas to put together a bunch more. But, getting organized and THINKING, ACTING (as in taking ACTION) and FOLLOWING UP in an organized manner have been my nemesis. I just read this book today and have to give the author credit for putting together an EXCELLENT resource and collection of USEFUL and USABLE ideas, tips, thoughts, and even action lists. A MUST HAVE book (and quite a bargain at the price I saw here) for anyone who is serious about writing that book he/she always wanted to - finally! Good luck.

This is a must have for anyone wishing to write a book of their own!

I've been doing book reviews for the Society for Technical Communication for about 6 years now and haven't come across a book as interesting as this one! It's very difficult to put down.

Currently, I'm writing a book of my own outside of my 40-hour writing position as a software documentation writer. I've made more headway on my personal book in the last three weeks than I have during the past year by following the tips suggested in this book. Other writers with whom I work are asking me about Don's book, as I have been taking it to meetings to read during those first few minutes that everyone is waiting for the meeting to begin.

This book overflows with helpful and "do-able" advice for eliminating distractions to writing. For someone who publishes quite frequently, I hate writing and will find nearly any excuse to avoid doing so. Perry Mason re-run? Cleaning the diffusion bowls (you know, those things around the lights on the ceiling)? Nearly anything becomes more attractive than writing. Aslett and Cartaino cut away all of life's frippery to help you get down to writing.

Instead of wasting time on What to Expect and the Girlfriend's Guide, this is what women should be reading. We all put "no episiotomy" on our birth plans - now read exactly why and how to set yourself up for a birth without one.

I have read Ms. Bruce's works in other birth publications and this is a great guide. It is a quick read - but a must-read - especially if you are birthing in a hospital, with an obstetrician.

I read this book as a child - I am now 46 and still touched by it. I was asked the other night what some of my favorite books were. I rattled off a list of books that I have read in the last 20 years or so that made some impact on me. Then, as I was driving to work this morning, I remembered this book. I did a websearch and was happy to find that Amazon had reviewers of it. The thing I find most treasurable about this book was how engrossed I became with the story. I found myself right there, in the fields, on the dirt roads, with the dogs - it's as if I had been transported into the pages. Fantastic writer, now that I remember the book, I will be sure to read it again, and to look for other titles by the author.
I recomend this book for the young and old alike.

The characters were very universal. Even though I am a trinidadian woman and can relate to the story better than most, it is still a book that every one should read. The main character was the type of young man that you just wanted something good to happen for him. He possessed alot of the characteristics of human nature. He wants a young woman, then he doesn't want her then he does again, then you're not sure what he wants. Life is like that. This story is the perfect theme of innocence to experience.

Once again, hats off to the author for a nice well written and well-translated edition. This book has a lot to offer if you open your mind. You can learn many wonderful things from reading this work, and it's a book that you can refer to everyday of your life. The Hagakure is broken down into many small sections, and passages with a lesson in each of them.

This book covers a wide range of topics such as: how to conduct yourself on a daily basis, to the way you should think, and the way you should view other people. Many examples I learned in my own life are found in this book, and it's nice to see that even though certain things are common sense - you can still read a book like this and receive gratification. Tsunetomo is 100% accurate throughout this book, and you get the feeling like you're receiving words of wisdom through a father figure.

This account shows you how to be a human being full of virtue and magnificent attributes. It conveys many qualities such as: listening to others and not relying solely on your own opinion, when to keep quiet and mind your own business, how to handle power, and knowledge, etc. This book discusses self mastery, loyalty, wisdom, respect, dedication, cowards, men of honor, and much more... Everyone can learn something from these short stories. This paperback is a little treasure, and should be treated as such. I would recommend this as required reading to a younger generation that seems lost in this modern world we live in today...Five Stars across the board...

If you ever feel that you need to second guess and think about what exactly the authors intended to say in the first place when reading translations of a foreign language texts, I can identify with you. I have bought other translations of Hagakure, such as Wilson's translation. I like Wilson's translations because he usually proivdes good introduction and for a while I thought his translations are the standard text, but then I came upon D. E. Tarver's transaltions largely through the positive comments made by other reviewers, especially the one who pointed out that Tarver transalted a section in the Hagakure as "...the way of the warrior is fufilled in death," instead of Wilson's transaltion which reads "...is found in death." I had puzzled what Wilson or Yamamoto Tsunetomo meant when he said that...hmmmmm....a case of inaccurate translation or there is a deeper meaning....hmmmmm

I have to admit when I saw Tarver's picture (a bearded smiling caucasion man in a jacket and white T-shirt) and his background (which is amazing but familiar like other martial artists in the US, like holding many belts ranging in diff style of martial arts) on the back of his book I thought he must be one of those New Age seeking/60s hippie/money lover/Bruce Lee fan again. But to my surprirse his transaltions are really clear and insightful.

I think he is for real. And I am glad I came upon his translation and thanks to that reviewer from Japan who pointed out the differece. The rest of his book is really well translated and for the first time I feel like Yamaoto Tsunetomo began to make more sense, so I think the problems I faced with other translations were indeed a problem of the transaltions not Yamaoto Tsunetomo.

This is just my opinion and I have read many translations of the Asian texts with transaltions or not, so hope this is helpful to you just as I was helped by that japanese REVIEWER...and sorry if I offend anyone with my stereotype of "bearded smiling caucasion man in a jacket and white T-shirt".....you know.....anyway

Critical reading for anyone passionate about the martial arts. This book focuses on the ethical: compassion, honor, class, style, loyalty, grace and self sacrafice of the Samurai. At the same time "empty mind", controling a situation without thought, but with quick and deadly action. No tought of self. Budo. Filled with the ideology of lives lived in historic times, with drastic measures, suicidal to homicidal, that could never be accepted in MOST these 21st century cultures despite the justifications fo those acient WAYS. This awesome book is not only a non-stop read through, it's a glimpse into the past of a lifestyle that could offer remedies to many modern day issues.

It has been some time since I've read Hawk and Me but the wonderful memories still linger. David not only describes this beautiful country from above in a way only a few can, but his flying ability is so apparent. I have had the opportunity to fly twice with David and I was impressed with his attention to detail. Safety was always in the forefront of his flying. He once flew to Alabama for a visit and landed at an alternate air field to avoid bad weather. I met him there and had my first opportunity to fly with him to his original destination, but only after the weather had cleared. I was so impressed by his pressence in the airplane that I knew that I would fly with him anywhere, anytime. The second time I flew with him we took off from an air field in Orlando to fly to Florida's west coast for lunch. Shortly after take off the radio failed and we lost all communications. I am not a pilot but I knew we were in good hands. David flew back over the air field and dipped his wing as a sigal to the ground crew that he had lost communications. The ground crew responded and we landed safely. He followed all the rules that he had learned while earning his pilot's license and it paid off. Let's go flying David.

When I got into this book I couldn't read it fast enough. I was so very impressed at the author's writing ability, especially his descriptions of the country side. Well actually the descriptions of everything. His love of flying was apparent as was the love and relationship with "Hawk". Also, the tense moments he experienced-such as picking up ice over the Rocky Mountains and the several instrument approaches to minimums-made me sit up and take notice. Such things give the reader a real sense of the drama that flying can offer. I'm a retired Air Traffic Controller, and the respect this man had for ATC made me proud. Think I'll go take flying lessons.

This book is one of those you find hard to put down. I took it with me everywhere in case I had time to read a few pages. Written by a gentlemen who obviously had years of flying time, exceptional knowledge of navigation, geography, technical matters, the fine details of flying an airplane, and of course the Hawk itself from tail to nose (you'll love the way the Hawk becomes personified--a companion rather than a piece of metal.) Mr. Helms keeps a thorough diary of each day and fills each page with anecdotes, political observations, comments on his environment, descriptions of the interesting people he meets, tidbits on the "art" of flying in all sorts of situations. Truly a fascinating book -- for the private pilot and all us "wannabe's."

As a former Chief Law Enforcement Officer, I found this book gripping, with the very REAL potential for the events described within to actually happen in American society within our own lifetime. Brilliant writing, brilliant concept, believable characters and some of the most awesome possible future fiction I have ever read! This book is truly believable in all it's implications for our potential future. ANY serious reader, despite his or her reading preferences will enjoy this book, and finish it feeling haunted. I give this work my highest recommendation and anxiously await the remainder of the series.

"I'm from the Government and I'm here to help you." We've all heard that saying and snickered.

In Head Rites, the authors have portrayed how our Government knows more about what we want and need than any of us do. Big Brother is all-knowing. Sound comfortable? God help us if too many believe that.

Head Rites reminded me of Orwell's 1984.

But we know that can't happen. Or can it???????

A wonderful book! This book, told through the lives of 3 couples, examines the repercusions of government zoning laws. I couldn't put it down! Could something like this happen if we don't watch our government? An amazing tale from beginning to end! If you like Political Science, Suspense, or just plain good books, then this book is for you! Read it today! It might just change your view on the government!

A very disturbing tale

I found head rites to be a skillfully crafted tale of what I hope america doesnt become. The characters are realistic and the writers have obviously done their homework. This book had me thinking about it for days after I read the last page.

Daniel Taylor's book is a wise and authentic book about creativity as it applies to the spiritual self. Any aspiring writer and, actually, anyone who has felt the urge to create (that would be everyone!) should buy this book and read it. It is a permanent addition to my writing book collection.

How We Use Story to Create Meaning in Our Lives

This is an excellent book, both for writers and for readers who are interested in analyzing stories. It is also an excellent book for those who want to reclaim their lives from the meaninglessness and fragmentation of our day and age.

Taylor provides a thoughtful rationale for the role of narrative in giving voice to those who are all-too-often voiceless, and meaning to those who see their lives as being a series of fragmented events.

He also explores epistemological questions as he examines the specific type of knowing that narrative knowledge provides; which stands in contrast against, but also complements, fact and statistic-driven knowledge.

His chapter on plotting examines how people search for patterns and order in their lives, and his chapter on characterization moves beyond merely creating a personality or an image, to the use of fully complex, multi-dimensional characters in order to build character in readers of the story.

Taylor includes an excellent chapter on the relationship between story (narrative) and the formulation of different worldviews. This is a particularly important chapter to read, given the tendency of most people to take their worldview for granted.

Throughout the book Taylor illustrates his points with, well, stories of course. There are quite a few well selected references from literature (mostly a few paragraphs at a time -- to illustrate a particular point) as well as stories from his own personal experiences or those of people he knew.

It is an engaging book but it is not lite reading. On the other hand, it is not overly "academic" either. Graduate students who are interested in doing narrative research and who care about principle and moral integrity in their work would do well to begin with this book. Others will benefit from a refreshing point-of-view that it can give them on life, and on how to become actively engaged in making choices in one's life, as opposed to being a mere spectator.

This book is so good I kept putting off writing a review on it, afraid my words would not do it justice.

Daniel Taylor explores the ways that STORY has power in our lives. We have our master stories which shape the way we view our world. We have our cultural and community stories. They all are interwoven in the core of our beings.

Somehow, reading this book, I got an image of Daniel Taylor as a gentle little English professor (Me being over 200 pounds, it's not hard for me to picture people diminutively.) I met Dan last month, at my StoryCon meeting and he is a biggg guy. But gentle, very gentle, and soft spoken. Yet his stories and his understanding of story are so powerful. This book should be required reading for anyone who works with story, any psychologist or minister.

I mark up books with wise words. This one must have [drained] the ink out of two or three pens with all the quotable, wise words I triple starred.

Dr. Taylor's book hits the mark

Short, insightful, highly readable, and mind-opening, this book sheds light, not heat, on such topics as diversity, individualism, and values. He helped me see the importance of taking personal responsibility for my actions, and the role story can play in helping me live up to my ideals. The idea of seeing myself as a character in a story gives me the perspective to do what I already know is right. Why is this marvelous book out of print?

This is the way comic albums or graphic novels should be presented. In a beautiful large size [I call these French deluxe editions as this is how they publish standard comics in France] hardcovers on extra fine paper. Boards are designed beautifly in clothe with golden letters. A big plus for me anyway is that there is no dust jacaket present which just annoys me as it interferes with holding and reading.

This is exactly the way I was hoping DH would reprint the Conan chronicles in 9 x 12 inch deluxe editions and I still hope they will one day [soon, soon, soon...].

I did not review the story and art as that is a given: it is awesome! More sketchbook material and preliminary pages would be nice, but this is great also.

This book is worth easily $100-200 quality wise and you would really be making a mistake by not buying this great book here on amazon.

DH people are you listening, we want also Conan by John Buscema and others done this exact way.

5 stars and more.

Cool but...

This book is great, the art looks amazing on this size. My only complain is the black fabric on the hardcover, man, that thing is a dust magnet, just wait and see. My wife thinks the exterior looks elegant, I think it looks cheap, I guess you need to see and feel it. I like better the Seed of Destruction hardcover, however, the art looks much better on this new hardcover, and the paper quality is great. Buy it, the exterior may not bother you.

Big, giant, glorious HELLBOY! (volume one)

This first volume of HELLBOY LIBRARY EDITIONS is a welcome addition to any serious comic reader's collection. It matches the superb ART OF HELLBOY hardcover from a few years back in both size and binding and contains the complete story lines SEED OF DESTRUCTION and WAKE THE DEVIL as well as an extensive sketchbook section featuring many of creator Mike Mignola's early sketches (with very few, if any, repeated images from the ART OF HELLBOY tome).

The only thing missing from the original trade paperback collections are the pin-ups by other artists but, really, once you see how beautiful Mignola's work looks printed in this oversize format you hardly miss them. The colors (by Mark Chiarello on SEED and James Sinclair on WAKE) are vividly reproduced on bright, glossy paper (be careful to avoid fingerprinting, though).

Any fan of HELLBOY, Mike Mignola, or comics in general should look into adding this book to their library. I look foward to volume 2.

This volume was my introduction into the world of Hellboy, and let me just say that I am impressed. Not only is the story both intriguing and engrossing, but it's also just plain fun. The writing is great, and the art is gorgeous, especially in this format. The inks and lines are sharp, the paper is very high quality, and the extras are well worth checking out. The cover, as another reviewer noted, does tend to get dirty quickly, but it's easy to clean just by wiping it off. This is definitely one of the best collections of a comic book I've seen, and it's well worth the price. If you're a fan of Hellboy, I'm guessing you own this already, and if you've ever been curious about Hellboy, or comics in general, you should definitely check this out. I've already pre-ordered volume 2, and I'll be getting any others Dark Horse wants to put out.

Very impressed

Hasn't been long since i really dove into reading comics, and searching for collections of series in hardbacks (like this one). The Hellboy Library really impressed me, it doesn't look like marvel omnibus or DC absolutes. I thought the cloth cover made it look very unique and stylish (although one reviewer said its a dust magnet, which isn't far from the truth, i liked the limited edition leather cover they made for hellboy seed of destruction which i sadly missed, this is a great collection)

I love how big it is and how well the art looks, the quality is fantastic for the price its totally worth every penny, i really can't wait to read more of it and can't wait to put Vol.2 right next to it. (which is already being pre-orderd on amazon :-D) I sure hope they do something like this for B.P.R.D. As well as hope they come out with covers like this for other popular dark horse series!!

Only thing i would have liked would have been a higher page count.
