I bought this coloring and activity book when I found out the movie would be showing soon. We took my 6 yr. old granddaughter to the movie and then gave her the book afterwards. She loved it. One year ago I had bought on Amazon the hardcover edition of Charlotte's Web and she had read it with her mother and so has become an expert on the movie and activity book. Great item.

Meet all of the barnyard animals from the new "Charlotte's Web" movie

Review Date: 2006-12-16
E.B. White's classic children's story "Charlotte's Web" was first published in 1952 and made into a successful animated film in 1973 with Debbie Reynolds as the voice of the title character. With all the advances in movie making magic regarding talking pigs, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood got around to making a "live action" version of the beloved story. The film opened in the United States today with Julia Roberts doing the voice of Charlotte, Dominic Scott Kay the voice of Wilbur, and Dakota Fanning as Fern. For youngsters who are enthralled with the movie, "Charlotte's Web: The Essential Guide" allows them to learn more about Charlotte's world.

This is a DK book so that means there are 20 "chapters," each of which is a 2-page spread, except for the 4-page spread that opens up to show The Farm that serves as a map of Wilbur's journey from the Arables' to the Zuckerman's. This also means that there are well over 100 photographs from the movie on these 48-pages, including a detailed look at Templeton's lair (a shiny key makes an attractive ceiling decoration). The book includes a salutation to the readers from Joy, Aranea, and Nellie, a trio of names you should recognize if you have seen the movie or the animated film (or gone old school and read the book). Then you get to follow Wilbur's journey from the Zukerman's barn to his appearance at the County Fair. Along the way young readers will learn about facts about pigs and other animals, the big words Charlotte uses (like "magnum opus"), and who is Henry Fussy.

Granted, calling this guide "essential" is overplaying things a bit, but for young readers who like the movie this book that Amanda Li has put together will certainly let them find out more about not only the characters in the film but the animals in the real world. I was just sort of surprised Dakota Fanning, who plays Fern, is still doing what would be considered a children's film, but then I remembered she does not become a teenager until next February. Anyhow, if on the way home from the film your kids are all excited about Charlotte, Wilbur and the rest of the gang, this book will allow them to prolong the experience and add a little education to the mix.

George's Pond: Created in the Beloved Tradition of Charlotte's Web
West's Time Machine

Being a children's author and teacher, I often enjoy reading Charlotte's Web as a child and now I enjoy reading the book to my son and my students. I think part of the reason this book has remained one of my favorites is because of the classic friendship between Wilbur and Charlotte. Both characters demonstrate an unselfish kind of love that is demonstrated from the time they meet. As a mother I want to teach my children the valuable life lesson of being a good friend and I think this story teaches that lesson in a non-didactic fashion. Charlotte's Web will forever be a classic in my heart.

The author has used very discriptive words and lets people understand what he is saying by letting us visualise what he imagines. My favorite part was when Charlotte met Wilbur and they became friends. I highly recomend this book for kids ages 6 to 13. This book shows the true meaning of friendship. it is the best book ever written!

Samuel Friedman has presented a thought provoking and riveting analysis of how children are influenced and manipulated by the World Wide Web. He documents his study with research and analysis that provides the reader with a compelling reason to heed his findings. Children and the World Wide Web is the first book to present a comprehensive treatment of the way children interact with the Internet. It presents detailed examples; listing web sites and their use of free premiums and other means in an effort to manipulate the thoughts and actions of our children. He also reviews government policy amnd issues pertaining to regulation and safe guarding the World Wide Web from rampant commercialization. Mr. Friedman has taken a difficult subject and through a concise and thorough narrative taken the reader through a landscape of potential terror that waits some children using the Internet. His book is well cited with scholarly references but is very readable. Fortunately, Mr. Friedman has taken the time to create a very vivid and valuable text for anyone who cares about the future of our children and some of the dangers that lie in wait for them on the Internet. This book is an excellent read!

A beautifully compiled book by many people

In ten years, I'm the first to comment; amazing. This book provides a lot of material in preparing for the college class I'm teaching on children's literature. I read aloud from it often in class because I can't say it as beautifully as the people who wrote the sections; people such as Marcia Brown and Madeleine L'Engle. The title is a play on the book by White but is actually a compilation of writings in honor of Charlotte Huck by many of her former students in the masters of children's literature at Ohio State University.

Vital handbook for clergy and religious leaders to battle the secular & entertainment media.

Having only read an early galley version, I can say bravo !

When it seems like the religious world keeps taking hit after hit, this manual gives strategies and tactics to go on the offense and make use of these controversies.
Rather than just being defensive; why shouldn't organized religion use the publicity from alternative religious-history books and movies, and make a positive from a negative; to educate the public and reaffirm faith.

Planning is Key
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-17
As with any project, planning is essential before typing the first keystroke. In the first four chapters, Mr. Fish takes you through an essential process of designing a church website, who the intended audience is, and what elements are useful to someone visiting the site. At the end of chapter 4, you should have a good design on paper including a well thought-out mission statement. This information alone is enough to justify the cost of the book.

The next section delves into actual HTML code with appropriate examples and exercises. Later on, Mr. Fish discusses dynamic content using ASP (nothing wrong with that) hooked up to a Access database. Although the examples use Microsoft technology, the concepts are the same for any scripting/database combination.

Finally, Mr. Fish gives advice for ongoing maintenance to the site, including training other people, handling special requests such as streaming audio, large photos, etc. This is where the "real" work begins.

It is clear Timothy Fish has thought about Church Website Design. In his book, he states that a reasonable website can be made for as little as $100 per year. With his recommendations, I believe this to be true.

A good reference to have around.

A Magical Christmas With Spiders
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-07
I think a younger kid (4-8) would like to read this book. This book takes place at Christmas time in Germany. It is about an old lady named Tante (Auntie). Every year she decorates a Christmas tree for animals and they come enjoy the surprises she has for them. Tante doesn't like spiders so every year she wipes them away. The spiders want to see the tree, but they never get to. Read this book to see what happens to those little spiders this year.
