The 1999 Software Developer's Guide
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-08
Since there's no blurb under the title, I'll start with what's on the back cover: "Programming is 90% of the job. But it's the surrounding part--selling, writing specs, designing, estimating, coordinating the coding, finding employees, training them, testing (and retesting), tracking employees activities, ... getting paid, ongoing maintenance--these take the other 90% of the time. And that second 90% of the time is the subject of this book."

Anyway, this is an amusing and irreverent collection of war stories and insights from a programmer who is building a software factory from scratch. He started programming in 1982 with Foxpro and is still developing. So Whil outlines how to turn programming into manufactoring, and how to deal with customers and employees, etc.

The book is put out by Hentzenwerke Publishing and is (as of 7/7/00) out of print; however, the next edition will be out later this year and if you send money you will get an e-book until the paper one is published.

All in all, a delightful informative read from a wise and humorous veteran programmer/consultant/businessman.

This book by Michael Lewis is a fast read 122 pages. It covers the essentials in a well-organized fashion. I personally feel Michael does a great job. I am a power seller. Several times a week I encounter someone who really needs to read this book. The answer to Question #7 `How do I know I am getting something a good price,' will pay for this book.

From student pilot to ATP, this book offers something of interest to anyone who loves airplanes. Some of the web sites profiled are simply entertaining, while others offer a wealth of information pertaining to aviation safety, weather, aircraft manufacturing, and virtually any other aviation-related topic that you could imagine. I'm ordering this book for several of my flying friends for Christmas....there truly is something in this book for every pilot.

This is one book that should be on the shelf of every education professional. I keep a copy in the library, and the teachers love it. It is an excellent source for finding several reference websites and for finding sites that will help the teachers with their planning and students with their learning. A well rounded book that is worth being in the hands of anyone hoping to get the most out of the web.

User-Friendly Guide
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-27
Part of my job as a Web designer/developer is to stay on top of current best practices, technology and software. This book covers all of that in a comprehensive but concise package.

The author goes a step beyond discussing what you can and can't do with a Web site, and offers practical, understandable reasons why, and specific examples of when a particular technique or technology is appropriate.

Like a well designed Web site, the book is well organized and easily readable. The links to the author's own website and others are well chosen, adding depth to the subject, and demonstrating an effective way to create a multimedia approach in which each medium plays a specific role, each complimentary to the other.

This is, by far, the best book of its kind that I've seen.

The best guitar-chord book I've seen!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-18
Forget the various guitar-chord encyclopedias (they're suitable for parrots, not guitarists)! The only way to master guitar chords is by understanding the theory behind their structure. This is the best book I've seen on this subject. Comprehensive, yet concise and easy to follow. If you want to master your neck, this book (and some practice) will get you there.

Extraordinary, Beautifully Put Together, Basic Reference
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-04
This is a beautifully put together book in terms of brains, content, presentation, and coverage.

An edited work, with ten primary authors, it actually reflects the collaborative efforts of an international network of collaborators, and can safely be considered the seminal basic reference on this topic.

The first 150 pages include an introduction and six chapters, on measuring global internet filtering, the politics and mechanisms of
control, tools and technology for filtering, filtering and the international system, corporate filtering, and ethics. The rest of the book, 285 pages, is taken up by regional overviews and then country-specific summaries of filtering policy.

The motives for filtering are three: politics & power; social norms & morals, and security concerns.

Two types of filtering occur: announced, and disguised. Announced filters show a blocking page, unannounced filters pretend there was an error. Blocking anc be of entire sites, or specific pages identified by keywords.

The eye-opener for me was that filtering is not just on content, but on capability. Skype and Google Earth are two of the primary capabilities that are being denied to the people around the world by repressive ignorant governments who would rather have perpetual poverty than allow the people to leverage every aspect of the Internet including free global communications.

This is a first class intellectual, social, economic, and political contribution to the literature.

I recommend the following ten books along with this one:
The leadership of civilization building: Administrative and civilization theory, symbolic dialogue, and citizen skills for the 21st century
The Big Switch: Rewiring the World, from Edison to Google
The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid: Eradicating Poverty Through Profits (Wharton School Publishing Paperbacks)
The Wealth of Networks: How Social Production Transforms Markets and Freedom
The Web of Inclusion: Architecture for Building Great Organizations
The Ingenuity Gap: Facing the Economic, Environmental, and Other Challenges of an Increasingly Complex and Unpredictable Future
Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom
The Pirate's Dilemma: How Youth Culture Is Reinventing Capitalism
The Difference: How the Power of Diversity Creates Better Groups, Firms, Schools, and Societies
Collective Intelligence: Creating a Prosperous World at Peace
