Wonderful Review of Internet Research Nuts & Bolts
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

This book is a wonderful continuation of the "Conducting Internet Research" book. It examines the nuances of Internet research, search engines, subject trees, and specialized databases (such as white pages, yellow pages, mailing list databases, and newgroup databases).

I strongly recommend this book to any employee, executive, student, academic faculty, or even housewife who is tired of "hot lists" and simply wants the bare essentials of Internet research, including how to master commercial search engines, meta search engines, mult search engine interfaces, and more!

it is very difficult to get hold of a copy, but it is definately worth it! It takes you around the world of web ads and how teh consumers react to them. The Authors conclusion though tend to understimate all the other papers that were published in the book. Well deserved 5 star.

Save Your Time, Your Security and Your Sanity
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-08
If you spend a lot of time on the internet, you probably have dozens of websites you need a username and password to log into. You may be tempted to use the same username and password for all websites, but this is bad for your security. For example, for your online banking account or any site that stores financial or any important information, you should have a unique username and password that is used nowhere else.

The problem is it is impossible to remember more than a few usernames and passwords. More and more websites require a username and password to use their services, even the free ones. It's maddening! So what do you do? You use software that will save and automatically fill in your username and password.

I've been using Roboform for at least 2 years now and I've tried a few others similar programs. Roboform has been around the longest and it shows. It has withstood browser updates and minimal competition.

While Internet Explorer and some other web browsers have the ability to save form information and usernames/passwords, you have no access to that stored information whatsoever, and you can't even tell what is being stored. That is why you may need password management software. Both software will allow you to save passwords and save form information. That is the minimum you should expect in a password manager.

Time-saving Benefits of Roboform:

* Save multiple profiles (Save different information to be filled in - work profile, home profile, business profile)
* Save multiple credit cards
* Require password prompting before filling in information (optional--can be turned off)
* View and edit saved usernames and passwords.
* Go to login url - you can go to the login URL (which isn't always on the main page).
* Choose to have forms filled in automatically or click a button when prompted to fill in information.
* Custom fields (Create custom-named fields (such as PIN) and enter the information you want filled in. Most password managers/form fillers only fills in fields it
recognizes (name, address, city, state, etc.)

Conclusion: I've tried several password manager programs and Roboform simply can't be beat. It is very easy to use and very versatile. If you use the internet a lot, you need this software and you can get it for free.

A great insight into the marketing value of the Amazon Kindle's Basic Web browser and 3G service

Every Kindle owner should read this article and join us in calling on Amazon to keep the basic web browser and the remarkable wireless broadband service that supports, and to keep it free or cheap. There has been plenty of buzz (as well as a few troublesome lines in the terms and conditions) suggesting that these features won't be free forever. Windwalker makes a well-reasoned case that it should suit Amazon's business model and customer-experience goals to maintain the service at no more than a nominal charge, and even suggests that it will be most profitable for Amazon, in the long run, to keep it free. Are you listening, Jeff?

I liked this book a lot. When I first pulled it from the bookstore shelf I thought it would be more involved. I thought it would be more like a treatise on the ins and outs of MySpace and how to customize a MySpace profile. It has 16 chapters and an appendix dealing primarily with HTML coding:

1. The basics of updating your profile
2. Using HTML to enhance your page
3. Using CSS to change your profile
4. Images and photos
5. Animate your profile with Flash and more
6. Make your profile multimedia ready
7. Finding third-party templates and plug-ins
8. Blogging
9. Nine more ways to update your profile
10. Growing your circle of friends
11. Contributing to the MySpace community
12. Unleash your inner artist
13. Developing an online following
14. Using MySpace classified advertising and more
15. Marketing your music on MySpace
16. Working the Net for your music group

As I read through the book I saw that it is a wonderful tutorial. It's kind of like a cookbook. Just start at the beginning and do what it tells you in setting up your MySpace profile and then do exactly what it tells you to do to customize your MySpace presence. What it tells you to do might not tweek your profile the way you want it to ultimately be. But you will learn by doing, and when you finish the book you should be knowledgeable and comfortable with the process so you can go back and redo your presence the way you want it to be.

The beauty of this book is it will ultimately teach you the process of putting together Web pages and Web sites if you let it. Then you will be in a great position to build your company's own Web site and blogs outside of the MySpace arena. 5 stars!

The author gets right to the point here, and offers good advice for folks who buy and sell antiques on the Internet. Her business savvy permeates every page. This is definitely one of several handbooks Internet antique buyers, sellers, and dealers will want close by. Very well written, smooth style.

Now you may think that there are better books out there. And there maybe. However this book is a "five star" book. I bought this book for a beginning apache class. We were able to follow the instructions and down load the Apache server from the Internet. The only problem we had was with the NIS system that was not anticipated in this book. It was a lot more important to use this book to read the flat files and see how they were related to each other. The section on Extra Modules (chapter 12) gave a way to improve the server and go outside the scope of this book. This book covered more details than I was looking for; this ways different people can use the book to target their particular needs. You can safely say:
"This book has everything you need to set up an apache server."
