I loved the convenience of shopping on the Internet but I had trouble finding the sites that sell what I want. Not any more! This book lists over one thousand sites that sell everything you can imagine. Where else could you find sites that sell spy and security goodies, decorator umbrellas and ladies lingerie all in the same book? You can even go to to the author's Internet site to find reviews of new shopping sites and, more importantly, the sites that have gone belly-up since the book was published.

Great book for begining programmers / new to Java

Most of the Java books on the market don't teach you anything about how to program - they simply contain lists and lists of classes and other complex topics.

This is an outstanding intro book to Java that I highly recommend.

Excellent introduction to OOP and Java

This is one of the best books there is on object oriented programming and Java. I used this book as reference on a Java training course I recently thaught to Cobol programmers. Although this book is not aimed to professional programming, the contents, structure and presentation style makes it a good choice as reference book for introductory Java and OOP courses aimed at professional programmers with no or little experience in object oriented technology and Java.

As a matter of fact, this book is a lot better for this purpose than "Java for Cobol Programmers" (ISBN: 1886801843) and "Java for the Cobol Programmer" (ISBN: 0521658926).

I strongly recommend this book for both non-programmers and programmers of structured languages.

Java books nowadays tend to be mammoths. You nearly break your arm lifting them off the shelf. But Paul Wang's rather slender book still packs a wallop and delivers excellent content in tons of very readable examples. You'll learn about neat, arcane topics like using Java to write CGI server programs and all sorts of things about network sockets. There are very few errors and the typefonts are especially large and readable. The only detraction, which isn't Dr. Wang's fault, is that the cover is too thin and flexible. This wonderful book deserves a hardcover!

I began using this book knowing nothing of JavaScript. I had never programmed either. The examples are thorough and well presented. Now that I have a better understanding of programming, it has precisely the information I need. Extremely useful for intermediate programmers.

This book is an excellent Javascript resource.

I found this to be a useful book for my web-site development. The material is comprehensive, the examples are good, and the information I was looking for was easy to find.

The coverage is thorough and professionally written.

Insightful description of business-consumer interaction in the near-future
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-21
Ever wonder what the interaction between business and consumers will be like in the not-too-distant future? (Hint: it probably won't include the singing cereal box of the movie Minority Report.) Author Tom Hayes thinks we're in the first steps of a massive cultural change, as fundamental as The Industrial Revolution. Inter-connectivity. You can see it beginning now with the success of social networking sites, and retailer websites like this one that allow for user reviews.

A major hallmark of the future will be a battle for the consumer's attention, with the winner going to those businesses whom the consumer trusts. (Out with TV pitchmen and in with friends' recommendations.) Those businesses that allow consumers to mashup their own products will leave behind those that insist on strict intellectual property rights.

You can see a lot where the future is going by just looking around, by extrapolating trends, but Hayes puts it all together into a cohesive whole. This is a must-read book for anyone, businessperson or consumer, who wants to understand where society is going. And Hayes thinks we'll be there soon -- predicting 2011 as the point where there'll be 3 billion people world-wide connected to the Internet.

I gave the book 5 stars not because it was perfect -- I think Hayes's enthusiasm sometimes makes him jump to conclusions -- but because there are so many ideas and observations here that it would take ages to put something like this together from other sources. And it's well-written, in a light, breezy style, that kept my attention throughout. Well-done!

Debra Kay Logan has done a marvelous job with this. Everything teachers, administrators, and parents need to know about Web site development in schools. Safety and security and privacy of student information is covered rationally as are the details of construction, content, and design in a school setting. This is a definite must have for any one developing school Web sites. Deb Logan's own Web site is a great model.

How to make an excellent web page
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-12-13
This book, produced by Linworth Publishing, is the result of an online collaboration between Cynthia Beuselinck, who worked in libraries for ten years, then as an internet support specialist for the Calgary Board, and now owns an educational internet training company; and Deb Logan, a school librarian from Ohio. It is the culmination of many years of work by the authors on school Web sites, and their solution to the problem of how difficult it is to find information on how to make good educational web sites. They have gathered here the wisdom of experts from books, magazines and other Web sites, and their own tried and true experience. It answers questions about content, design, safety, ethics and responsibility. What it doesn't do is focus on how to build Web pages step by step or how to use software packages. Instead it helps educators define their needs and plan for high quality, low risk and meaningful educational Web sites. It covers such essentials as creation of a vision statement, categories of content, publishing guidelines and policies, copyright issues, technical considerations, design, and maintenance. The appendices contain reproducible planning and check sheets, lists of helpful resources, including exemplary web sites, a glossary, index, bibliography and recommended resources list. The text is clearly written and well organized, with "Fast fact" sidebars and screen prints, as well as easy to use lists and catchy quotes. This is an extremely useful tool - one that all schools should have on their professional reading shelf.

I just finished reading "A Kid's Guide to Creating Web Pages" by Benjamin and Peter Selfridge and I highly recommend it for the following reasons:

1. It is written in crystal clear and friendly language.

2. You will be able to create a web page easily and successfully.

3. You will understand what you did to create the web page (in other words, the authors try to explain what each step accomplishes).

4. The guide is just the right length (not a 1,000 page computer language text) and is laid out in a pleasant fashion with lots of examples and explanations.

5. Once you create a simple web page, the authors gently introduce many other exciting things you can do to enhance your design.

6. This book accomplishes what it promises and in addition it wets your appetite for more!

7. This is a perfect beginners guide for young and old (the prose is not infantilizing or obnoxious)

Buy it and try the examples when you have time and when you do not have a lot of distractions or interruptions--the more success you have the first time out, the more you will want to keep trying.

A backpacker's - or armchair traveler's - dream

Whether you love to travel, or just love to read about it, this book will fill you with awe and wonder at the world's most amazing region. The beauty of it is that it isn't a guidebook full of hotel and restaurant listings; it's a compilation of travel stories from dozens of authors who seem to have covered every square inch of Latin America and share their favorite places. As it's written by so many travelers, the writing quality varies from pedestrian to brilliant--and typos abound--but the passion Latin America evokes shines through. I've traveled extensively in South America, but learned of new places I can't wait to experience. Bravo, Viva!

In September 2005, I filled a backpack with what I would soon learn were mostly useless items (anything white, hand sanitizer to last me a lifetime, an arm sling) and headed via red-eye from Los Angeles to Lima for a seven month solo backpacking stint all over the South American continent. With no idea what lay beyond, I spent the majority of the overnight flight with eyes wide open, examining the Peruvian businessmen sleeping all around me.

When I crack open V!VA List Latin America: 333 Places and Experiences That People Love, my trip comes flooding back to me. A sense of wonder and awe pervades the pages. These passionate articles, written by Latin-American loving travelers, writers and photographers from around the world, transport me back to the countries I have explored and loved, back to the infectious rhythms danced to during Brazilian Carnaval, the flavor of a gorgeous Argentine steak, the feeling of being dwarfed by the rolling Andes of Peru and Ecuador. There is truth in these articles, history and honesty, attempts at making sense of cultures different from one's own.

V!VA List Latin America is a compilation of articles submitted to Vivatravelguides.com by the website's global community. Anyone with a story to tell and a passion for travel can potentially be published, and this sense of openness and authenticity makes for a truly exhilarating read.
