Unbelievable book!

This is a great book! It will tell you exactly what to do to make the most annoying website on the net! It can make you make unstopable pop-ups, changing backgrounds, forcing readers to scroll over to read a sentence, blast annoying music in the background, make visitors view a slide-show before entering your page, and that's just for beginners! Not only does this book tell you how to be annoying, it has some nice things to help your site, like making sure visitors read the terms of service before entering, and so on. After each section, it tells you how to use the scripts to Not be annoying, so you don't always have to annoy the people.
Any way, this is a great book for people who LOVE to create off-the-wall webpages!

Truly Annoying Tricks

Review Date: 2002-11-26
But that is one of the reasons you should buy this book if you want to learn web design tricks that will annoy the heck out of anyone visiting your site. If you're the kind of person that loves to pull naughty tricks on web visitors, you will love this book. Or if you just want to know some cool stuff to try just for the heck of it, you will love this book. While some of this tricks have no value other than to annoy, it's nice to know about them if you do any kind of web design. And for the ones that do have some value, it's nice to know of some new tricks to try (as long as they're not overdone). I'm always looking for the latest "tricks" and when I got this book, I thought it would be more of a "guide to what not to do with a web site." Instead, the author seems to take great pleasure out of pointing out "evil tricks" to try.

Among them? Bothersome Backgrounds, like flashing backgrounds or a scrolling background. Nasty looking text that fades in or out, or changes colors constantly. Links that go nowhere or adding sounds to them. Crazy cursors that change shape or disappear entirely. Popups or windows that fill up a whole screen. Or even ways to "force" visitors to fill out a form within a specified time or to block underage visitors if you have an adult-oriented site (actually that one might come in handy for some!).

At times hilarious and a quick read, this book is enjoyable especially if you have a perverse desire to learn what the annoying things you really shouldn't do with a web site, but have the desire to do anyway.

Online Learning Magazine reviewed this book in the September 2000 issue, comparing The Business Case for Web-Based Training (Tammy Whalen and David Wright), Return on Investment (Jack J. Phillips), and The ROI of Human Capital (Jac Fitz-Enz).

"Tammy Whalen and David Wright's book, The Business Case for Web-Based Training, is based mostly on examples. They outline the practical business reasons for Web-based training, compare Web delivery with traditional training delivery, and help management decide if the money spent is worth it. They provide a case study as an example, then invite trainers to use that model to evaluate their own Web-based training."

Marjan brings it in once again!
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-22
Marjan has created an updated educator's guide that surpasses the original guide he compiled a couple of years back. This updated guide puts a lot of meat up front in chapter one for those who simply can't wait to dive in... educator, parent, and kid sites are available immediately upon opening the book! The ten sections of the second chapter begins with sites for educational standards and ends with elementary, middle school, high school, and college and university sites. Chapter three includes web locations by subject categories such as: Art; ESL/Foreign Languages ... Math ... Science ... Social Studies ... Special Education ... Technology ... and others. The last three chapters includes information, concepts, URLs, and theories about Internet projects that work; searching and locating information for busy educators; and web site construction, including 25 reasons why every school should have a web site! I was so excited and thrilled about the updated version that I bought enough to give copies to selected librarians in the local area. The book is a wonderful source of Internet URLs researched and compiled in a format that eases its use by busy educators who want to view first-hand exactly the sort of assistance they can find on the Internet. There are down-to-earth explanations of Internet searching and search engines. It is a must-have for those librarians who are always asked for relevant sites for specific topics and subjects... Depending on one's personal librarianship philosophy, you may share the entire book OR just jot down the URL for the inquirer... 8-) ...

Marjan brings it in once again!

The very best in usefulness, information, and time-saving! Explanations in each chapter enhance the pictures of the many actual downloaded web sites. Information in each chapter addresses tips and hints for every level of expertise. Both educators and librarians will find the subject and grade level categories especially useful for locating web sites for specific topics and educational Internet projects - and the alphabetical index is simply superb! Internet projects are described (5 in detail) and contact information is also included. This book is one reference which will always be close at hand.

Camping on the Internet

There is no more concise summary and guidebook for the internet user...on the road in an RV or off the road at home. It is extremely clear, well-organized and a "quick learn" for those who want to try out further exporation of the internet. In its relatively small format it explains everything from types of computers, hardware, software, terminology, to those mysterious "letters" related to computing we wonder about. Camping On the Internet by Eyrich is an absolute must for those who are full-timers in their RVs. Whether you just want to learn from scratch or whether you want to build your own website for pleasure or business, this is THE book. The author, Loren Eyrich, has spent many years traveling in an RV and publishing a small newspaper "on the road", using his computer. This is a user-friendly book. As a fairly competent computer user, I found it wonderfully refreshing and highly useful; it also helped me build my own web site.

Old friend gets facelift and becomes more beautiful
Helpful Votes: 32 out of 34 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-05
Although the title is new, this book is based on the authors' 1998 book titled "Web PErformance Metrics, Models and Methods (ISBN 0136938221). This book is more than a minor rewrite - the chapters are in a different sequence, and each has been updated. None of the information that made the older book such a valuable resource was lost in the process. For example, the material on queuing theory and analysis remains, and it among the best written tutorials in print. What has changed includes:

(1) Shifting of focus from client/server and web server environments to web services, with an emphasis on performance characteristics of SOAP and UDDI. Client server issues are still covered because these issues are still germane.

(2) An emphasis on architecture and how performance and capacity fit into a larger picture. Network and server performance characteristics are examined in detail.

What hasn't changed includes the excellent material on performance and benchmarking basics, detailed analysis techniques, and the support for this book that the authors provide on the book's web site. I especially like the Excel spreadsheets that you can download to use in conjunction with material in nearly every chapter.

Overall, this is one more of a series of books on various aspects of performance and capacity management. I also recommend reading their companion book, "Scaling for E-Business: Technologies, Models, Performance, and Capacity Planning" (ISBN 0130863289), which covers the applications level of e-commerce systems and seamlessly complements the material in this book.

for actual deployment of Web Services
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-07
As Web Services get implemented, this book can be a vital tool in planning for the deployment. The authors have a rigorous methodology to estimate the many performance issues encountered when you try to build out an actual Web Service. They discuss important ideas like content delivery networks, which cache or mirror content at different physical locations, so that the response time to a user's query is minimised. And it also adds redundancy. Think Akamai, for instance.

A crucial aspect they explain is how to develop a cost model for a data centre facing a certain expected rate of queries coming in from the net. Practical advice on what things to cost out and how to do so, as shown in various examples.

Most books on Web Services published after this book often discuss the networking together of various services. Using WSDL or BPEL to describe these configurations. BPEL may not have even existed in 2001 when the book was published. But the book is certainly not outdated. Nothing in it is tied to a specific version of a Web Services grammar. Those other books are more about explaining the syntax. Few delve into actual deployment scaling issues that cannot be avoided if you have to go live.

Good webmaster starter book for kids

Review Date: 2001-09-15
A career guide aimed at kids (read 7th grade and below), this book gives examples of career opportunities and the type of work environment in the webmaster profession. The book also focuses on what kids can do to learn webmaster skills at an early age, and how to get a website up and running for free. The case studies are also interesting, and give good, everyday examples of the World Wide Web and also discusses the difference between old "brick and mortar" businesses and "e-businesses."
