Excellent Guide!Review Date: 2008-02-18
An invaluable checklist of essential tools & techniques for business web designReview Date: 2007-11-11
Kevin Potts begins the book by pointing out that the internet is now an essential medium for businesses of all shapes and sizes; at the same time, customers are more sophisticated than in the early days of the internet, and have little patience for poorly designed websites. In order for a company to present an effective presence on the web, it "must deliver beyond customer expectations; better content, sharper design, smarter architecture, and more proactive communication and interaction are all components of websites that produce exceptional results for corporations."
In the first chapter, the author begins by outlining what a company's website should be doing:
* Marketing, selling products, & promoting services
* Providing customer support & company information
* Creating branding & market awareness
He then covers planning, researching, and selling the design (or redesign) within the company, then moves on to a brief overview of platforms and technologies.
The rest of the book proceeds to show the designer how to create an effective and compelling site for his or her client. He covers content creation, accessibility, architecture & navigation; essential sections of a company website such as the Homepage, About page, Products, and Support pages; error pages, print-friendly pages, legal considerations, and SEO; email marketing, RSS, and advertising campaigns and metrics.
This book is an amazing collection of diverse information presented in a clear and concise fashion. It's not intended as an in-depth treatment of any of the subjects he covers--rather it's an invaluable checklist of essential tools and considerations for designing a top-notch company website.
"Web Design and Marketing Solutions for Business Websites" has become a valuable addition to my reference library, and it is one that I know I will reach for first when I am planning a new or redesigned business or service website.
Highest Recommendation--Current, Accessible, CompleteReview Date: 2007-10-11
She recommended it to me as an extraordinarily useful text. I've found it particularly readable, including the chapters on platforms, content management, standards-based development, and other topics which normally are either over my head or simply difficult to read.
Potts' chapters on content and SEO are cogent, provide excellent examples, and are as useful as any I've ever read. The book is only several months old, so he is even using illustrations from Google Analytics new web configurations.
It's published by [...], which is a publishing house run by and for web designers.
I don't often recommend books for other people's professional libraries, but this one is proving very useful to me.

I love Bob's Web design products!Review Date: 2001-09-27
I'm an independent Web developer working from an office in my home, and you can bet that I have Bob's color mousepad by my computer and the color chart in my briefcase. I own a couple of his HTML cards, too. C'mon, Bob, how about some more great products? ...Julie S.
Web Design Color Reference Card, HTML, RGB ChartReview Date: 2000-05-05
The colors on the charts, mouse pads and posters are vivid and true. These products simplify and enhance any web-based page (including auctions!).
I purchased the poster, chart, card and mouse pad. Don't limit yourself with these exciting new products, grab a mouse pad to take with you when you travel or the card or chart to take with you to appointments or other places you can sneak in a little extra planning time!
These products are so much easier to use than trying to hold open a book and look for the color you need. It's also easy to visualize the colors together and helps to create more pleasing eye appealing pages.
These are simply the BEST new products to hit the market in a long time! They also make great gifts, send one today. They are great for beginners and advanced users alike!

Excellent Labor Day, 2003 centerpiece!Review Date: 2003-11-17
If you work for anyone but yourself, you'll find this book a "legal-like" treasure. It gives you all the information you need about all the agencies involved, and the laws that are in place to protect workers' rights. Wendy also explains how sexual harassment and degradation are a huge part of what American women face everyday trying to earn a living!! If you think that working for the fed'l gov't is comparable to something on West Wing, this book will certainly open your eyes.

THE BEST BOOK to get for Filemaker web publishing.
As a "non-programmer" who has struggled in the past trying to bring a database to the web,
I found the examples in this book easy to follow and understand.
It definately took me to the next level.

PHP and FileMaker Integration - a fast and enjoyable journey!Review Date: 2008-02-03
The book is divided into four logical sections. The first section provides background information for those new to the world of Web publishing, including an introduction to HTML and PHP. After reading this section, you won't be an HTML expert, and you certainly won't be a PHP pro. But you will have a good understanding of the technologies involved in Web publishing and development, and how those technologies fit together.
The second section of the book provides a foundation for the examples that are used later on. The section includes a chapter on how to setup a FileMaker database (creating fields, working with the database, performing finds, and so on). I'm sure that the majority of readers will find this section to be unnecessary and might be tempted to skip it. However, the chapter does cover one key topic that you should take a few minutes to check out, and that is an explanation on how to setup a FileMaker account (and grant it the correct privileges) that PHP can use to connect to the database.
The second section also covers installation, deployment, and configuration of FileMaker Server, as well as the new PHP Site Assistant. Jonathan makes a recommendation -- and one that I heartily agree with -- that if you do not absolutely need your own server, then using a server provided by a Web hosting provider is an ideal solution. However, if you do have your own server, you'll find this information to be of great use.
The third section of "Web Publishing with PHP and FileMaker 9" includes what I consider to be the most valuable information in the book. This section covers the FileMaker API for PHP (often referred to as "FileMaker.php") itself, and does so using an example Web application that is developed and expanded throughout the section. The application is one that most readers will be able to associate with -- an online product catalog.
The section includes chapters on how to select, sort, and do finds against a FileMaker database using PHP. Another chapter explains how to alter FileMaker data over the Web, including the creation of new records and updates and deletions of existing records. There are also chapters on how to view, add, edit, and delete related data via PHP (which is accomplished using portals), as well as some very useful information on how to work with images (including images stored in container fields and those stored by reference using URLs).
The last chapter in the third section describes a very interesting concept: Developing a PHP application that automatically updates as the FileMaker layouts that it is built on are updated. For example, if a field is added or removed, the PHP application automatically adds and/or drops the field as well. If you are looking for an easy way to let your FileMaker users "self-manage" a PHP application, then this chapter will prove to be invaluable to you.
"Web Publishing with PHP and FileMaker 9" covers a lot of ground, and does so in a way that makes it a fast and enjoyable journey. Jonathan's writing style and "voice" make it easy to follow along with the material. His expert knowledge of PHP and FileMaker is apparent, and he does a great job of sharing that knowledge in the book.
If you are looking for a good book on PHP and FileMaker integration -- whether you are new to the topic or consider yourself to be a pro -- then I highly recommend picking up a copy of "Web Publishing with PHP and FileMaker 9."

The First Web Services Infrastructure Gets a BookReview Date: 2002-01-15
E-speak started at the end of 1995 as a research project at Hewlett-Packard's research division. At that time, there was no such thing as web services, XML was just being defined, and e-commerce was browser-centric. Our goal was to define an infrastructure that hid much of the complexity of developing Internet-based businesses. We succeeded (watch out here), but our solution required thinking about things in a new way. That made explaining e-speak difficult.
The authors of this book succeed in explaining web services, what e-speak is, why you should use it, and how to use it. Neither too formal nor too whimsical, the presentation strikes the proper balance between presenting facts and explaining concepts, doing both in a very readable fashion.
The book opens by explaining what web services are and the benefits of developing businesses around them. The book ends with a review of comparable technologies, the competitive landscape, and prognistications about the future. These sections alone are worth the price of the book.
The bulk of the book is about using e-speak's Java programming interface to develop e-services. (Read the book to see why I didn't say web services.) Rather than present an encyclopedic list of all the features, the authors take the example of a travel service. Each chapter adds a new twist, more functionality or better security, for example. In this way, the reader is led to understand both the benefits each feature provides and the code for using the feature. All the major parts of e-speak are included, but the reader never feels inundated with unnecessary detail.
If you're interested in web services and how they will affect the way business is done, read the opening and closing chapters. If you'd like to build an e-service, this book gives you a jump start. Most importantly, this book will give you an understanding of the concepts, something that is more important to success than just learning the technology.
