I found this book to be a great way to become familiar with the range of issues that come to bear on incorporating graphics into a web page. Despite the exclusive use of Photoshop in the examples, the concepts are explained in such a way that makes it easy to identify the same graphic-editing techniques needed to be used with other software such as Paint Shop Pro, my graphic editor of choice. Good clear explanations and excellent examples do a great job of illustrating how "tweaking" things like the color depth and color pallete affect file sizes, download times, and picture quality. Originally, I kept renewing this book from my local library until I finally just bought my own copy. A great book!

Although the book is oriented around Photoshop on the Mac (which is even better if you use a Mac), the concepts are universal. The book is visually pleasing, very informative (especially on graphic formats), and an inexpensive way to get started

The book is deceptive. The author makes it seem simple. In fact she packs in a lot of very cogent points whilst retaining a friendly style. Great for anyone starting out in graphics for the Web (though it does more or less assume you will be using Photoshop).

I found this book by accident in the library when I was starting the process of designing our office's web site. Because I was a rank beginner to the world of web design (although I knew the PC, Windows 98, Microsoft Office, FrameMaker, PageMaker and a little Photoshop), I needed some hand-holding to get my feet wet. This book was better than anything else I found for that task.

There are other web design books I like (like Roger Black's book on Adobe Press) but this is the best one I have seen for the person who literally knows nothing about the topic.Yes, it was written in 1996 and is somewhat dated for the person who wants to be cutting edge, but you have to crawl before you can run, and this book got me through the crawling stage so I could start to feel comfortable with the concepts I would need to work with my Adobe (and now Macromedia) software.

The writing style is crisp and clean and right to the point. I read it in three hours.

Try this book if you don't know anything about web design, then take a look at Roger Black for one designer's viewpoint on design issues. Once you have those two books under your belt, the author's latest book, Web Design in a Nutshell, would be a great next step.

The book provides many useful examples of core technology issues in building a JWS powered web site. Its treatment of the upcomming jsp standard (in JWS 2.0??) is helpful, but points to the fact that compiled pages (jhtml) may be short lived.

The clearest explanation I've seen of multithreading and synchronization

The authors explain the JWS, administration server and admin tool in very clear terms. The second part of the book does an excellent job in discussiing JSP, Servlets, and other advanced topics. Very practical.

This book is without peer. It is succinct and yet covers the JWS in depth and detail. The writing style is fluid and the organization is excellent. Alas, now that this superb book is available, Sun has announced it is pulling the plug on JWS!

With regard to this talented author and developer, all I can say is Larne Pekowsky ROCKS! This book is a great investment -- Larne Pekowsky truly IS Java Web Server Development.

This book is great for beginners, but it lacks depth. It provides a lot of examples for creating pages, but my experience is that background information is important. I would like to have seen more information on Master Page inheritance. This concept is ideal for standardizing the UI and establishing consistency throughout the application. Don't get me wrong, this is a good book, but I expected more detailed examples. Experienced developers may want to pass on this one.

This book is fantastic for self-study and the only prerequisite is that you should have some understanding of C#. I bought Essential ASP.NET by Fritz Onion before this one but it was a little hard to follow at first - also, it deals more with ASP.NET architecture and internals and isn't so practical if you have to start building ASP.NET applications right away. I assure you this one can get you started in 2 to 3 days if you know C#. It covers all the major topics, doesnt have any mistakes (at least I couldn't fine any), has superb explanations and straightforward coding examples. It even teaches you ADO.NET if you dont know that already.

I think this is a great book for entering ASP.NET programmming if you come from the old asp world.

This is Dr. Mellors third book on programming in the "Learning by Example" series. The DHTML book lives up to the standard of the first two (ASP and XML). As usual the book comes complete with web support (download the codes). It is concise and clearly written, with all examples clearly explained and increasing in complexity throughout the book. Covers CSS, DOM and JavaScript, both alone and in combination (dynamic scripting). Well worth the price!

This book (and indeed all of the books in the "Learning by Example" series) are simply great for people in the education branch. They are ready-made courses with web support. The style is streamlined, the examples are simple but are logically build up, so that by the end quite a high level of complexity is achieved. Why waste time developing your own material when this is difficult to beat, and costs only pennies!

I don't know that I can add much to what the other reviewers have said, except that the book is very very well written and even the complicated techniques appear to be easy and logical. The book has a nice flow, building up stepwise in complexity. With the codes (downloaded from the web support) to help, then you can't really go wrong.

The internet is a source of a tremendsous volume of data that can be hard to translate into useful information. Dr. Weinberg's guide is a comprehensive compilation of useful and reliable links that provide information on a broad array of health issues.

Dr. Weinberg makes the difficult task of finding good, sound medical resources on the web manageable. As a consumer and as a mental health professional the information that I have found is user friendly and helpful. This book is a must have for everyone, especially those of us who have a medical condition that we are seeking understandable information about.

Dr. Weinberg's Guide for health resources is an excellent collection of references covering clinical disease, medical social issues and a section for Spanish-speaking patients. Health professionals as well as patients will find this book a valuable resource for educational/academic information on the web. Just remember that this guide is "Knowledge for your Health."

The book was in great condition and delivery was on time, I couldn't expect anything more.

This is a brilliant book for beginners and home page designers alike. Excellent online support and resources. Slightly dated now (July 2005), with nothing about CSS or "Style", so eagerly awaiting their next book which will hopefully cover these topics.
A great reference book.

Never seen anything better--probably never will. I have read about Web design, HTML, etc. in other books and articles, but I have never been completely at ease with the subject and didn't bother to read the material in detail. It never really sunk in. Then, this book came along and it opened my eyes. The whole book is superbly structured and the mystery about Web design is all cleared. Everything in the book is so well presented and appears in the right sequence. And there are so many tips strewn about. I now know HTML much better. Your confidence grows as you keep reading. I have a website done in Word2000 and I didn't quite use Word's full potential till I read Chapter 9. I had ignored WordArt for example. Now I am much the wiser in so many ways. I can't imagine any better book coming along.

I have been working with web page and web page design for about two years and I also teach the design of pages through HTML and FrontPage. For most people they need more than 1 or 2 days in a classroom in order to understand the concepts and this is where this book comes in handy.

Using the color photos of screen shots in order to make the understanding better, this book is broken down into 3 parts. Part 1 is the basics, helping you crawl in web design before you run. You'll be treated to topics like the elements of the web page, adding graphics, which include types of art, colors, pixels, photos, drawings, backgrounds and bullets.

Part 2 is the creation of the web page, which deals with subjects like posting, HTML layout, using Microsoft Word and FrontPage as web editors. The ideas and techniques for both Word and FrontPage are well explained and the screen shots included make it easier to visualize what the final outcome will look like.

Part 3 is the going live phase of the design, with the uploading of pages with the FTP protocol and web page updating after you have gone live. The hands-on really starts in part 2, which may be a drawback to the book, but overall information wise this book will transform the novice designer into a serious web master in no time flat.

Finally, a computer book that looks at the task at hand beyond the computer. I was looking for a book to help me do a decent looking web site on my own. This is the book to get. They talk about ALL aspects of the process - from how to write and plan the content to writing the HTML to do it AND everything in between like hosting, fonts to use, colors,... everything. I have found this to be a rare commodity in info systems books. This book gives you advice based on their experience and lets you know what to expect if you don't follow it. This is what I want in a computer book, not a step by step guide on how to execute menu items. This is truly a well-written book and I wish the authors would do many others. Good job!

If you want to build your first web site and you have no idea where to begin this is definatley the book to read! This book is very detailed and full of visuals that you will see when you are actually in the process of creating your web page. I find that the pictures are so much more beneficial than long drawn out explainations of what to do. The book is broken into 10 parts. Each part has a series of short, instructional lessons designed to help you create the best web page using your computer. This book starts off with the very first thing you need to do; it makes sure you have a web authoring tool and moves on to creating your web page. This book is like having your own personal professor teaching you how to create your web page. A very helpful glossary and index are also included that will help you understand key terms. This was definatly money very well spent. A stress free way to create a web page!

While the expectations of web page viewers has never been higher, it also has never been easier to build them. Software to semi-automatically create pages is available, efficient and often inexpensive. One of the packages that most satisfies these criteria is Microsoft FrontPage Express. Bundled free with many applications, including Internet Explorer, it is the package illustrated in this book.
The style of presentation is a series of screen shots with notational marks indicating where to click. These pictures are all in full color, closely matching what you will see on the screen. All of the fundamental steps of using the wizards to create a basic page are covered. Specific topics include: adding links, modifying the colors of text and background; embedding pictures, including tables and forms; posting the page online and announcing the page to the world. Throughout this, there is the occasional tip to help the appearance of the page. Presented at the level of the novice, the only prerequisite is the basic knowledge needed to point and click.
Realistically, the day is no doubt coming when your web page will be as much of your public persona as the job you hold, the car you drive and your place of residence. If you have a desire to have a web page and have no idea where to begin, this book was written for you. It is the best introductory book to building pages that I have seen so far.

Easy Web Pages second Edition by Gina Carrillo is a great book for building your own web pages. It provides meticulous step by step direction on where to get free resource, and how to use the resource. I was surprised when I read this book, because it supplies so many good website resources, and it even show you places to promote your finished site. The book contain three catogories, which then divided into numerous chapters.(But they are really fun to read and easy to understand). The first one teaches how to use programs to build website. The second one teaches how to use HTML to build website. The third one provides all the general informations that a beginner should know for websites.

This is an excellent book for someone who wants to use Front Page Express and create simple web pages. It is well laid out, has a good index, and is easy to understand. An excellent place to start creating web pages. freelandz28@mindspring.com

My company is just starting to look at ebXML for handling b2b transactions. I'm familiar with XML but really needed a quick primer to get me up-to-speed on the essentials of ebXML. This book is very clearly written to guys like me--it covers the basics very clearly, with good examples. Now I am ready to get my company rolling with ebXML.

This book really helped me build on what I already knew in order to get a handle on ebXML. The author does a great job of showing how ebXML builds on XML standards, and also how ebXML relates to Web Services, which I'm just starting to get a handle on. It provides good technical detail on the ebXML architecture, and gives lots of business case examples and reasonable guidelines for developing a strategy for staging implementation of ebXML. Coverage of security and the other major specs is very complete and readable--I highly recommend this book!

This is a great way to get into using the Net. I passed it along to the Librarian and Teachers at my kids' school. They said it was a fabulous resource for developing net-based curricula. Sites are grouped by subject in easy-to-use articles and the articles are grouped by general category. Pick a topic, hit the index and GO! You'll have a great trip.

Kitty Williams and Robin Lind have put together an excellent resource for net novice and expert alike. "Essential Net Novice Websites" includes nearly twenty catagories for websites to explore along with thoughtful backround material and explanations.

The book covers a wide range of topics and interests. There is something that will appeal to everyone. The business and government sites listed can get you to just about any professional site you can imagine. The information is summerized for the reader and is extremely helpful. Throughout the book the reader is consistently equipped with the means to further explore any topic as far as the imagination can take them. And there are also lots of places to go just for fun and entertainment.

My favorite aspect of this book is that it is a one volume reference that led me to all sorts of web pages that I would never have found on my own. My personal favorites border on the zany (Clifford Pickover's Web Page, America Unhenged) but there are certainly many practical websites covered as well (online shopping and travel arrangementa, etc.) At the very least, each article give the reader a springboard to endless net exploration. And don't forget to download the electronic companion which comes as a freebie with the book. It gives you the hyperlinks to every website mentioned.

Williams and Lind have done it all for you. Check out a copy of "Essential Net Novice Websites" and start you own personal exploration of the World Wide Web.

I handed this book to a colleague who had always actively maintained the internet was irrelevant to him. He reads voraciously, but wouldn't go on line. As he leafed through this book, he began to look like a kid in a candy shop! He wouldn't give me the book back. Give this book to your friends - whether or not they are on the net. It captures a sense (like no other book I've seen) of the ever expanding wealth of information and resources that surrounds us! Great Job!!

I'd been crashing around on the Internet and largely finding good sites by accident. Reading Essential Net Novice Websites was a real eye-opener. It was as if I'd been lost and authors Kitty Williams and Robin Lind had handed me a map. Suddenly the Internet had a shape and a form. And because of the authors' eclectic taste, I not only had the big picture but I could sample the many zany sites they had alerted me to. Internet tourists would do well to use this book as their travel guide.

When the news got out here in Australia that Fierce.com had finally landed in the "real" world, I raced out and bought a copy of "The Exclusive Book for Web Elitists" faster than you can say "Happy Hour at Sizzlers". Being a Fierce fan for longer than I care to remember, these guys have made me laugh over and over. And continue to do so now offline as well as on.

Tor and David are two of the craziest, abrasive, outspoken and out-of-control guys (with no particular quality attributed exclusively to either one) it's ever been my pleasure to come in contact with. And Matt is just plain unhinged. But all are hilariously funny and do the best "baffling with bulls**t" routine I've ever come across.

Just buy the book - it'll make you laugh, it'll probably make you cry and it will certainly make you look at the Web as it should be viewed - with one eye on the screen and the other on just how crazy and unreal (in the true sense of the word) this virtual reality world called the "WWW" really is. In other words - cross-eyed. (Well, it's worked for them!)

An excellent resource for "The best of the best", websites on the Internet. I will be visiting all of these websites and utilizing this book for quite some time to come. It was this book that brought me to Badpuppy.com, which I find to be the biggest best Gay & Lesbian Portal on the Internet. At the very least I now have a home on Badpuppy where I'm with many others who go through the trials and tribulations and the lifestyle questions the Gay & Lesbian community have come to expect.

These guys are incredible. They write about websites, but you hardly have to go on the web to enjoy this thing. It's really about the twisted lives and relationships the author's lead. That's what makes it funny.

I actually got the book as a gift from my mother because she knows I use the internet. She saw the book in the store and decided to buy it for me. I was nonplussed at first when I saw it. I mean, after all, who wants a book about the web for a present. I put it in my bathroom and took a gander one fine day and I could not stop laughing. These guys are so funny. And there're these fake parody type articles in each chapter of the book that are really bizaare and didn't really know what to make of but they're pretty damn funny, too. Anyway, it might be a shameful thing to say, but I know about a lot more sites now so, really, they make surfing fun. Thanks, Fierce.
