I could not put this book down! Alot like Evanovich, but in many ways better because Casey Jones is actually believable as a detective. Her insights into people and how she describes things are so down right frank it's scary. If you're at all uptight about sex, religion or politics, you're not going to appreciate her humor. Serious Christians need to steer clear of this one.

My favorite phrase from the book, which I'll always remember, was "The weather is here, wish you were beautiful". I think this author is very up and coming, but may be a little bit too racy to compete in the mainstream as does Evanovich. The character of Casey is well developed. She's pretty clever and likely beyond the scope of many. A quote from Casey: "We talk about girl stuff, like what's the most reliable hand gun and if the choke hold should be outlawed or not.

Casey is at it again!

Casey takes on the case of a death row inmate whom she feels is innocent. The underlying tension of Casey's past lingers throughout the series. Casey vs. Bureaucrats-they never had it so bad.

I enjoyed this book so much, I ran out to buy the rest, but the bookstore was already closed! I was actually looking for something to hold me over until Janet Evanovich's latest book, Seven Up came out, and found K. Munger! Characterization, humor, plotting, all go go go! If any of you readers know of any other authors who write as well email me please. writeschk@houston.rr.com

Katy Munger was recommended to me because I love Janet Evanovich's books. Not as over-the-top as Evanovich, this book had its share of wit but combined it with a tight mystery plot and a horde of fascinating secondary characters. A writing workshop lecturer once told me: every character in your book thinks they're the star of it. Well, every character in this book COULD be the star of their own story because they're so wonderfully crafted and intriguing.

Even if the ending stretched out overlong, I didn't mind because it gave us the conclusions for each character's story, and by that time I'd come to care about what happened to them.

Casey Jones is a fascinating character, a little too much on the yang side at the beginning but who softens up during the course, a woman who makes mistakes but learns from them; smart and sexy, confident and not twenty-one. We care what happens to her. We care about the case she's working on and the people she's working for.

And it's all set right around my house! I was THRILLED to see landmarks of North Carolina's Research Triangle throughout the book, adding layers of our area's peculiar flavor to an already eccentric viewpoint.

So I'm here on Amazon to snarf up some more Casey Jones books. You go, Katy Munger! One question to you and Evanovich: how can your heroines eat so much and not gain weight???

Since recently discovering this series, I have systematically worked my way through almost all of them, and love every single word of them.

Casey Jones is a big gal, which comes in handy in her line of work. Casey's a Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, PI -- unlicensed thanks to a long-ago brush with the law. In this story, Casey is hired by the no-nonsense matriarch of a no-nonsense family to try and save her granddaughter, Gail Honeycutt Taylor, from her impending date with the executioner. Gail is on Death Row for the murder of her police officer husband, and it had never occurred to Casey before to question her guilt. The more she digs into the case, however, the more she becomes convinced that Gail didn't do it. It doesn't help matters that Gail is almost suicidally apathetic and won't lift a finger to help herself. Casey's unorthodox recources and colorful associates make for a devilishly delicious story as she battles cops and bad guys -- and sometimes can't tell the difference -- while Gail's time is rapidly running out.

Casey Jones is a true-blue Southern belle, as is her creator, Katy Munger. She can come join my group of same any time! This book with its quick wit, sparkling dialogue, and stylish plot is not to be missed. In truth, the whole series is divine and I am just dying for the next one.

THE AMAZING PRAYER

Since hearing about Jabez, I walk around with a different composure, in a different mood. God wants to accomplish great things through us; he's just waiting for us to ask. Jabez's cry was that God would bless him so that he could bless others, change his generation, and change the world. God is trying to make you live like you never have before. God wants to inspire your life, so you can inspire someone else's life so they could live holy and peacefully.

I was just blown away by the simple truth in Jabez's prayer. It's challenging, and it really has touched me. I'm not much of a reader, but I became absorbed with this book and have immediately experienced the power of prayer. His experience has taught me to live expectantly, to be aware that God is at work around me and in me. It's okay to ask god for blessings because through it we're going to be able to reach more people/young people around the world are leading the way in prayer. They're seeing God do miracles.
(Yes this is a good book if you like stories about finding ways to get closer to God)

A lot of the people I know never KNEW about this part of our history. I'm glad someone had the good sense to write about it before it's lost for all time. Ever wonder why a person's blood boils in a vacuum? What the highest parachute jump was? Who were the people that pioneered this effort, even before the U.S. considered having a space program? That and more is in this book.

This book tells a story that happens in a time when the romantics were more powerfull than the cynics. This happens at a time when it was possibe to be non conformist and still contribute in very valuable ways to the advancememnt of humankind.

The book of Mr Ryan is instructive yet very pleasant and relaxing to read. It is very rigourously documented, logically organised, systematically researched. He was able to tell the facts, while at the same time describe the human beings and analyse the human factors . The autor worked hard to write so you can effortlessly witness the lore of these chivalrous people.

At the end, you will find yourself more knowledgeable and emotionally moved. You will feel like these heros are your personnal friends.

This is one of the top books on quantitative finance

I am a student of Prof Neftci in the Applied Math for Finance MS program at Baruch College. He is a great teacher and has written this wonderful book. This is the text book for the Calibration course he teaches at baruch.

The best thing about it is in the practical approach it is written with. It tries to explain the finance as interpreted by practioners like traders...the engineering of finance rather than the science of it. Knowledge of basic parobability thoery, martingales, PDE and some stochastic calculus is assumed. The book itself has less emphasis on mathematical rigour but there are plenty of other references for that.

The strength of this book is in its practical utility in understanding the market and the rational behind the products that exist in it and the priciples of pricing and hedging those.
Chapter 11 on the Fundamental Asset prcing theory is a gem and is the workhorse for pricing many of the products like swaps or swaptions.

Prof. Neftci gave one of our mandatory course - Financial Engineering, in HEC Lausanne. This book is the reference book for this course. His lecture is great, a lot of jokes and funny stories as well as insights about financial engineering. However, I find out that the book is even better than his lecture.

I can't praise this book too highly!

As someone who teaches derivatives to practitioners and in a Masters program, I can't praise this book too highly. It is clear, comprehensive and, most importantly, concentrates on practical applications. I was particularly pleased with the chapter on repo, which is usually underestimated in importance, without requiring a whole, specialist book.

For someone with a fundamental, but non-quantitative background in financial markets (MBA or CFA level), this is the ideal place to go next before more specialised and quantitative books. The advantage of having studied this book first will be to have a clear picture of the forest for the trees.

My only (small) criticism is that the book would have been even better if it had included a chapter (or two) on the multi-tranche asset backed security structure followed by cash and then synthetic CDOs. I do hope that might be rectified in the next edition.

Bravo!

Simply a must own for anyone with any use for Quant Finance

Neftci is one of those rare authors who can begin at the begining, explain his major point and logic without excessive jargon or short-cuts, and do so without sacrificing depth and substance.

In a field were the readable texts are for MBAs or elementary practioneers or for the initiated members of the priesthood, here is one of a few handful of authors (Wilmott and Joshi as well) that are both clear and serious, rigorous and accessible, insightful and a plerasure to read.

Maggie Quinn has no plans on going to the prom, a girl with her grandmother's sixth sense, but after a demon starts attacking other students she has no choice. The story is addicting and hilarious. It reminds me a lot of (my personal favorite show)BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER.
I hated putting the book down and fell in love with Maggie and the rest of the cast.

Despite the title this book isn't very explicit. Perfect for teens of all ages who enjoy a good demon slaying or just a funny new read!

It is a VERY promising new series Hell Week (Maggie Quinn: Girl vs Evil)

Buffy meets Nancy Drew

Have you ever heard the cliche that High School can be hell? Well, imagine for a moment that it really is. Not in the figurative sense but literally hell. That's what happens in the book, PROM DATES FROM HELL. Maggie Quinn is on the newspaper staff and is the Yearbook photographer and doesn't want to go to her prom. One day while photographing the Spanish club for the Yearbook, Stanley, the school nerd, asks her out. She's horrified but what happens next is even worse. The resident Jocks and Jennifers come along at that moment and torment Stanley. After Maggie takes a photo and threatens to put it in the newspaper, something happens. Stanley threatens all of them. No one takes him seriously, that is until Maggie starts sensing things and smelling brimstone at the school.

Later things start happening to the in crowd--the same ones who'd tormented Stanley. Now it's up to Maggie to find out what's going on. Putting on her Nancy Drew hat she searches to see what's going on and finds out that the prom is mandatory if she hopes to save the school from demons.

I enjoyed this tale. Think Buffy meets Nancy Drew. The catchy dialog pulled me right into the story. Throw in a cute college student, who happens to be researching paranormal happenings and is in her father's college class, a cute Jock, and a foggy demon, who likes to leave messages on her window. Oh, and also some witchy cheerleaders.

What I really enjoyed about this tale was the interaction of Maggie to her father. So often stories have the parents either obvious to their teen or the bad one. Maggie's father is very supportive of his daughter even when he can't see the demon. And her Debbie Reynolds like Grandmother is a gem.

This is a fun ride that makes you wonder if maybe that smell in high school might be something more sinister!

I got this book over a vacation. I knew nothing about it, or the author, but I bought it because it looked funny. I finished it in 2 days. (One of which was a 14-hour car ride.) As soon as I finished the book in the car, it was scooped up by both my older brother and mother, because i wouldn't stop raving about it. They have been fighting over it constantly, and both enjoy it. Just goes to show how the book appeals to a wide audience! Definitely worth reading!!!

I loved the first two books, but this one is the best yet! Virgina has now grown up. At first I was sad that her teen-years adventures were over, but reading about her as an adult has been thrilling. So many things, including an abused child, her own children, a husband, struggles, and her grandmother, happen to her. Through the whole thing she realizes that her relationship with Christ is not what it should be. I think that this book has a great value to it!

I read the first two stories in this series and loved both of them. The plight of young Virginia in the first, and the older Virginia in the second gave us a glimpes into the life of a girl in that time period, I'd say, around the turn of the century. This third book introduces us to an adult Virginia, a married woman, caring for an elderly grandmother and an abused child as well as her husband, her own child, and household chores. Life for her was not easy, but she had God by her side, and He is the only one who can give you the stregnth and endurance to make it through the tough times. This book was really inspiring, and I hope Ms. Oke takes pity on us and writes the next one soon.

Her home is finally built and just as life looks promising, an old friend drops in and with her a little waif daughter who ends up being Virginia and Jonathan's. Raising horses is risky and not without long hours - again leaving Virginia to fret. With a baby on the way and an wounded child to heal, horses take priority and Virginia loses her perspective on what is really important. The last straw is when Grandmother breaks her leg and must come live with them. Virginia is ready to throw in the towel when she allows God to speak to her heart and she finally listens. She is able to sort between fact and fantasy, romance and committment and wakes to the real reason for being a family. She is changed forever. Another Janette Oke thriller. Off to book 4!

Bree O'Toole is a brave 13 year old girl who saves a 14 year old boy named Mikkel from drowning. After she is captured by two men, she discovers Mikkel is a Viking master. While a prisoner on the Viking ship, she prays God will protect her and guide her. Her life on the ship is not easy, but God does answer her prayers.
If you like adventures, you will love this book. If you are interested in Vikings, this book is perfect for you. If you like miracles, you must read this book. Raiders of the Sea is a great book for a family read aloud or for reading alone.

Review Date: 2007-02-11
I knew that this book came from a Christian publisher, but was hoping that the faith of the characters would be an organic part of the narrative, rather than being inserted forcefully into the story. I was disappointed in that respect; sometimes the author laid it on a bit thick, especially with the "miracle" at the end of the book. I thought that it was the Christian belief that we love God just because God IS, and not for what God can do for us in the way of supernatural pyrotechnics. Does this give the young reader an accurate idea of what faith is? If we are in trouble and call on God for a miracle and it doesn't happen, what happens to our faith then?

I also didn't like the disrespectful way that the religious beliefs of the Vikings were treated. To boil religious diversity down to "My God is stronger than your God" is not a particularly helpful message to be putting out into a world that is still filled with religious conflict.

Christian Irish girl captured by Vikings

This is the first of the three "Viking Quest" series, which is continued in the "Raiders from the Sea" series. Bree is a young Irish girl who is captured during a Viking raid. Her brother is also captured, but effects an escape, thanks to his sister. The story begins with the first suspicion of a raid, and is concluded with the launch of Bree's escape from the Vikings.

Through the story, Bree battles her fear, anger, and resentment toward her young captor, constantly turning to the Lord for strength and courage. The Christianity did not seem at all forced or contrived, but flowed naturally, as it would in the life of a Christian.

I was pulled into the story, especially as I enjoy this time period. It was written for children, but adults will enjoy a nice quick read. The plot is not simplistic, and moved right along. It is Christian and clean, but not preachy.

I'm going to have to get the other books in the series! This book is followed by "The Mystery of the Silver Coins."

The way the book is written...is magical! You want to read it slowly to get every word, yet at the same time yourself reading it as fast as you can! It's got mystery and danger...but unlike most...it's so real! The best thing is that the characters always turn to God when they need help instead of panicking or thinking they can do it on their own!
I'm not gonna tell you what happens...cause you need to find out what happens for yourself! You'll find yourself totally rapped up and lost in the book without even realizing that hours that have gone by!
This is defiantly a must read! For everyone!

This book, my all-time favorite novel, was Anthony Hyde's first novel and to appreciate it you have to remember that in 1984, when this novel was published, there was no Internet, no Google, very few electronic methods of getting information. Hyde's protagonist, Robert Thorne, a former journalist, is a Russian history expert who is drawn into a mystery that consumes him to the end. Thorne is a very likable gentleman, no quirks, utterly normal. When Thorne probes the mystery surrounding him, he uses time-honored methods of finding information, such as the Bettmann Archive, talking to people involved, etc. whereas today most journalists can simply Google someone.

As for the plot, if you've ever read Graham Greene's "The Third Man", you'll find some similiarities. Because Hyde uses the 1st person, we get every thought that Thorne is thinking, and so you get a sense of an updated Mickey Spillane "hard-boiled detective" novel, too.

Because Hyde was writing his first novel, he avoids many of the "hack" techniques other writers often employ, there are no cliches, no gratuitous sex scenes and no inane dialogue.

You can see where Hyde gets some inspiration, though; there's a little bit from "The Godfather", a scene where Thorne is in a restaurant in Leningrad, talking to a Russian KGB agent, that is straight out of "Casablanca".

But, these are quibbles - I love this book and it's replaced "Doctor Zhivago" as my fave novel of all time.

I love Soviet history, particularly anything to do with the Russian Revolution and execution of the Tsar. This dances around it through the whole book. There's unrequited love and history and political intrigue. How can you go wrong there? Wonderful intelligent and captivating.

THere's my two cents.

This is a very readable book. The storyline is ever developing and doesn't necessarily lead you where you think it will. It also was refreshing to read a story in the first person, that did not spend enormous amounts of time building themselves up to be experts in this or that or telling you how with-it they were by wearing name brand clothes.

It is a mystery story that is believable in its development and execution. You can identify with the main character, because it could be your next door neighbour. And as an added bonus, there is a lot of information about the Soviet Union that is interesting to know. Good book!

I've read well over 1000 novels in my life, but after this one, I felt compelled to write a review. I'm not saying it's THE best story I've ever read, but it's the most engrossing book I've tackled this year hands down. The well-conceived plot is absolutely impossible to guess and the settings are unique when compared to the cliched L.A. or N.Y. settings of most of today's bestsellers. Get this one before it's out of print.

Just A Great Book

This is one of my favorites of the cold war fictions. I loved the location descriptions and choices; you start in North American and just keep going east. This is a smart, fun book that gives the reader a great story and a lot of interesting historical facts about Russia. This really is a book that has two - three very well developed and written plot twists that makes you stay on your toes. I have reread the book and it is something how well he places the road signs. This is a great book; unfortunately he was not able to keep up this form into his next.

The year was 1917 during WWI and Josef wakes to find himself in the care of a stranger who he only knows as Hank. He can't understand why he is here let alone who he is. He tries to remember and question the man but can not remember anything. All Hank will tell him is his name.

Finally Hank begins to fill in some details especially since he is moving him to his farm in Culpepper, Virginia. Hank admitted to being Josef's biological father, having had an affair with his mother who was now dead and was raised by his mother's husband Otto von Woerner. Hank filled in a few more details that confused Josef - he was born American but Otto raised him as a German.

In Culpepper Josef meets Lissa Parker a nurse who lives down the road. From the beginning love grows between them despite Hank's attempts to separate them, which neither Lissa nor Josef can understand why. Josef can't remember his past nor will Hank tell him anything. Lissa gives Josef a Bible to read which causes Josef to remember the faith in God his mother had taught him. Lissa continues to nurse Josef back to health knowing that she must leave soon as she has joined the Red Cross and is going overseas as a nurse. Since she's leaving Josef decides to enlist even though he still does not know about his past, only Hank seems to know the truth that Josef is a wanted man.

Later Josef is captured and in an enemy prison camp his memory comes back. Josef knows he must pay for his past but what about Lissa, the most patriotic woman he knows will she stand by him? He knows he must find her. Read how he amazingly escapes from the prison camp, runs to Lissa's side only to find her sick with fever and is arrested and returned to the states without her even knowing he was there. Through it all he knows he is in God's hands and knows Lissa's life is too. Josef knows the two Josef's the past and the now must come together and trust God.

"Remember Me" is the sequel to "Pieces of Silver", an awesomely unique historical fiction novel. The author Maureen Lang has really painted a true picture of life during WWI. You'll really begin to believe you're reading a true story ripped from the headlines of a newspaper during WWI and not a fiction novel. You'll see how God's hand moves upon the hearts and lives of his people and that no matter what God is in control.

I didn't think this book would be better than the first, but it was! I thoroughly enjoyed the story of how Jozef Warner went from 'traitor' to 'patriot.'

Remember Me by Maureen Lang is a very timely book about two young adults caught up in the maelstrom of War.

Lissa Parker is making plans to head overseas as a nurse with the Red Cross in 1917 when she meets and falls in love with a young man who has lost his memory. Josef von Woerner heads to Europe to fight. As his memory comes back in bits and pieces he is faced with several life-changing decisions. This is not just a love story, but a heart-searching book with many twists and turns. If you enjoy historical fiction, you will love reading this book and learn much about this era in the process.

Excellent story! I loved it!

This story was fantastic! Like Tricia Goyer, Maureen Lang can get you to fall in love with the characters and their stories and make you sad when the story ends. Yet, there is always a satisfying conclusion that will make you smile. I am a total fan of Lang's historicals. She had me cringing several times over the descriptions which were vivid and realistic to the point where I felt that lump forming in my throat. War is so devastating. At any rate, the main focus of the book was not so much the war as the story of two people fighting for what they believed. The court scenes were fabulous and the devastation of the flu epidemic was well done.

I don't want to give away some of the high points of the story because that will give away what happened, but I feel I can share that this story gives you a strong sense of patriotism and that glow you feel about American history. Overall, this story kept me on the edge of my seat. I really didn't know what would happen next. I detest a predictable story. Oh, and I was mentally living in 1917-1919 during WWI, also known as The Great War. It was that good. In fact, I can't think of a single weakness in this story. It made my heart sing. And this author is a master at dragging out the tension and building it until you want to either scream or cry with the characters. Fabulous historical fiction!!!

Josef Warner, as he knows himself now, is given a chance few people receive; to start over with a completely blank slate. However, that comes with its own consequences. After being shot by an American agent and rescued by a man he doesn't know, he starts a new phase of life with no memory of his past.
He meets a Lissa Parker. She's a compassionate nurse, beautiful woman and loyal patriot. They begin a journey together creating a present, planning the future and hoping is memory will return. When she travels to war torn Europe to serve in the Red Cross, he enlists to fight for his country, the United States of America.
When, in the stress of battle, Josef's memory of his German heritage and staunch resistance to the American involvement in the war returns, his future is threatened. Will his present service and sacrifice atone for his past crimes? Can his renewed faith in God's truth carry him through the present trials? And, will the love between him and Lissa survive into their future?
Maureen Lang has written an historical masterpiece. Her understanding of a tumultuous time in our nation's history makes the line between fiction and non-fiction blur. Her compelling characters and tender love story draw your heart. And, in a day when our nation still struggles over the issues of war and peace, she touches the heart with God's truth above all.

All of the Restorer books are very good. The characters are believeable even if not likeable at times. There is always a theme of trusting in God no matter what the circumstances and also of stepping into our destiny/call even though we are just ordinary people. These books have many layers of truth to expose and apply to daily life in the midst of exciting adventure fantasy fiction.

My husband and I read all the time and really enjoy the science fiction/fantasy genre. But it is hard to find well-written books that are uplifting AND exciting AND thought-provoking WITH well-drawn characters. Sharon Hinck's series has all these elements. The message in the books is in our hearts, and so we enjoyed reading all the more. Bravo to the author!!

Excellent Addition to the series

Susan's son Jake might be the next Restorer, but right now he's in trouble. Cameron and Medea, Susan's enemies from Lyric have gotten through the portal and are in the wrong world. They force Mark to help them go home, but in spite of all he can do, they take Susan with them. Jake is determined to go after then and save his mother. But it's not the Lyric he expected. Things have changed, and danger is all around him.
This is book three in Sharon Hinck's Restorer series, and as usual, she takes the reader on a magical journey. Strong characters, and fantastical adventure keep the reader immersed in the story.

Another winner in the Sword of Lyric series by Sharon Hinck, The Restorer's Journey is an action-packed fantasy grounded in harsh reality. The narrative alternates between two main characters: Susan, the Restorer/soccer mom from the first book, (The Restorer) who becomes a prisoner of the Rhusicans while her son Jake, the new Restorer, tromps around trying to find both his bearings and his courage.

Jake struggles with his new role as the Restorer and tries to triage the multiple injuries of the land - plus rescue his missing mother. Not a stand-out leader initially, Jake is knocked around, beaten up, tied up and taken for a forced march, and more - but recovers from everything until he learns to follow the One's direction and truly be a leader for the people. After seasons of trial and suffering, the People of the Verses begin to restore order and return to their sacred roots.

In the meantime, Susan is kept a prisoner of the sadistic mind-reading Rhusicans. Through her experiences of deprivation and mental torture, Susan connects even deeper with the One. The strength and reality of Susan's relationship with the One unhinges the Rhusicans and literally rocks their world.

All in all, it's a riveting story. This is not a sweet bedtime book with a happy little moral at the end - it's not a standard fantasy novel in any way. It's a harsh spotlight revealing a couple of very real characters in deadly situations that don't play out easily. Both Jake and Susan suffer terrible things, yet each does so with an amazing attitude of gratitude to the One whom they serve. They continue to seek His face and direction regardless of their individual circumstances, whether they are running for their lives, or trapped and alone with no hope for relief or release. It's truly an astounding book to read. We all face trials and difficulties in our own lives. We may at times petition God to help us out of our troubles. But it's rare to choose to remain in the trial so that we might find God's will for us, for our lives. I know it's a struggle for me personally to be faithful and trusting when it seems like everything is crashing in around me. But it's good to be able to take comfort in a book that tells it like it is, and doesn't make light of life. Books like The Restorer's Journey are real sources of inspiration. It doesn't need to be non-fiction to be encouraging. And this book proves it.

Sharon Hinck has truly become one of my all-time favorite authors. She has shown time and again that she can tell an awesome story and make it hit home with depth, passion and conviction. Her books have an honored spot in our home library, and I hope that many will find her works as enjoyable as I have.
