the illustrations and delightful story of Eloise in Paris with Nanny and all of their pets. Almost as delightful as the original, if you and/or your children liked the first book, you will like this one too. I promise, i promise, i promise....

I love Kay Thompson and ordered this for my great-niece without ever having read an Eloise book. It certainly has the feel of a different era (one moment of Eloise swatting the doctor and him ordering a Johnny Walker Black) but the flair, exhuberance and open personality of Eloise makes it "tres drole". Just remember to read it fast and without taking a breath. Pure fun.

With her Nanny (Nanny), Turtle (Skiperdee), and her Dog (Weenie)...It's a Treasure. It's a keeper. It's great. A+

Eloise gets a telegram one day from her mum inviting her and Nanny to come over to Paris. Eloise can't wait. She falls onto the French capital like an American storm and goes just about everywhere. She dines, sightsees, meets locals, gets a dress made just for her by none other than M. Dior, and she eats so much she gains "rawther" a lot of weight. In the end, Eloise misses the Plaza and is happy about her return home to New York. In a nice touch, in the doorway above the famous old hotel Eloise and Nanny call home, a big banner hangs, and it reads, "Welcome Back Eloise!" Eloise has gone full circle and we feel we've taken every galloping step along the way with her. Yet another fun and charming volume in the Eloise series from Kay Thompson and Hillary Knight!

I'm 32 years old and I LOVE Eloise - she is an absolutely delightful character! I have bought several of the Eloise books for my 5 year old daughter and she just loves Eloise as well. How fun and inspiring is it for a little girl to read about a character as whimsical and independent as Eloise?

The illustrations in this book are fantastic and really bring Paris to life for children. I have read this book at least 100 times to my daughter, and each time I enjoy it more. My daughter now wants a champagne cork necklace just like Eloise...thanks Kay Thompson for laughs you have allowed my daughter and me to share!

This book is a nice journal about the events of Episode l through Padme's (a queen in disguise) eyes. The book keeps you interested from beginning to end and! leaves you wanting more. It's a very quick read, and I've read it several times and still like the story. The pages are photo quality, with faded images of events in the background of each page. The text is a larger print and is very easily read. I wish they had journals by Padme from Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.

Queen Amidala is a brave young lady who must rise up to an evil Phantom to save her people, in this book it has pictures of most of her costumes and lots of fun reading for children 9-13.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I first bought this book. I can say now that reading it was a most pleasurable experience. Jude Watson has done an admirable job with this journal. It is the deep introspections of a young girl, told shrewdly with a great deal of empathy, not only for Amidala, but for all the characters that she interacts with. The journal displays Amidala's keen insight, and sharp mind, and examines her motives and decisions with great sensitivity. It tells us a little about her background, and her relationships with the people around her. At the end, I felt as though I had discovered a real person.

Though Luke's journal was my personal favorite of the Journal books, this one was definitely the best written. It was better than Anakin's especially, since this one truly got into the mind of Queen Amidala, whereas Anakin's wasn't as good at bringing out his character (what little he had) or anyone elses. This one however, not only lets us get to know Amidala, but also brings out the other characters in a way that made Episode 1 seem much more interesting than it actually was. It was fascinating to find out more about Amidala,(I didn't previously realize she was only fourteen, in the movie she seemed older!) who I found a very intriguing character in the movie, though I was confused about where and when she was Amidala/Padme. This book answered my questions about that also, tying everything together in a satisfying knot. Also, I found Anakin's character much more interesting in this book than even in his own journal. In the movie especially he irritated me, because he just seemed too cute and sweet, but here he is much more likable. This book would be good for any Star Wars fan, especially those twelve and under.

Relive the movie "Star Wars: Episode I" through the eyes of the newly elected Queen Amidala. This young teen begins this journal before the movie began. Readers see the training Amidala went through in preparation for her future post. In the book we find out WHY Amidala puts lipstick on her upper-lip fully, yet only a slash on her lower-lip. We see the defenses that were made by the guards, such as a decoy, but never dreamed would ever have to be used. (Oh come on, you did not HONESTLY think those handmaidens were there for LOOKS, did you?)

**** Not as magnificent as Princess Leia's journal, but just as enlightening! In the movie, Queen Amidala had to keep her face blank so her adversaries could not read her. In this book, we see all the thoughts, fears, and strategies that went on behind the royal mask. In fact, this book made Amidala's character more impressive than the movie did. It can also be used as a quick refresher before you flock to see "Episode II: Attack of the Clones" in the Summer of 2002! Very good reading! ****

Great book! I went to a training by the author on polypharmacy in the treatment of individuals with mental illnesses. I then bought his general "Essential Psychopharmacology" book that was fairly complex, but the cartoons made the information fairly understandable for a non medical person like myself. The "Prescriber's Guide" is much more understandable and very useful in it's discussion of augmentation medications and ways to combat side-effects. It's presentations of how various medications work is very clear and gives one a good understanding about why one would use one medication verses another given how the illness presents in a person. If I were a general practitioner and certainly a psychiatrist, I would want to own this book.

This text is detailed, easy to use, and provides valuable information for the practicing psychiatrist. It provides information for both FDA approved uses of medications as well as for common "off label " uses. I have found the text to be helpful in my day to day clinical practice in both adult and child/adolescent psychiatry.

I love this work. A great working companion to Dr Stahl's Essentials of Psychopharmacology. I love the index listing meds according to their uses. Simple and easy to use with great dosing tips and clinical pearls. Every prescribing Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner should have one and use it frequently. Especially considering the limited and out-moded formularies many of us have to make the best of.

Susan May Warren is a master of romantic suspense storytelling! Her characters are authentic role models of Christian behavior in extreme circumstances. The way she records their thought processes makes me sit back and examine my own reactions to less stressful experiences. Not only have her novels afforded me many hours of wonderful entertainment, but they have also helped me to deepen my relationship with God and others.

In Expect the Sunrise, the third book in the series Team Hope, Susan May Warren delivers. The book opens with the heartbreaking scene where FBI agent Stirling "Mac" McRae's brother is dying in his arms, and he believe's it's his fault. All of a sudden a bush plane passes overhead and he signals that he's got an emergency, but the plane ignores him. He vows to find out who the pilot was who left his brother to die. After healing some from his brother's death, he must take a plane trip in a small craft. Andee MacLeod is the bush pilot and this is her last flight before winter sets in, as she tries to climb above a storm front, the plane crashes. Some of the passengers are injured, including Andee's best friend. To make matters worse, Mac discovers there is a terrorist in the group, but he doesn't know who. In fact, he suspects Andee. The same group of terrorists have also taken Andee's father captive, a bush pilot to taught his daughter to fly and a former star FBI agent. Throughout the book, the author demonstrates God's love, forgiveness, and grace. This is an exciting read and is well written.

Susan May Warren is a terrific author. This is her best series yet, and this book may be the best in the series as well. I love how her characters always seem so real. I had trouble putting this book down. I'm still eagerly awaiting the fourth book in this series!

This is the third book in the Team Hope series and hopefully not the last! This was another wonderful addition to this series. The characters are such a joy to get to know.

Mac and Andee end up stranded in the Alaskan mountains after Andee's plane crash with several other passengers. The tale of their harrowing journey out is definitely worth the read. Add in terrorists and you have a great suspense novel.

This book is essential for any english or elemtary school teacher. I teach social studies and found many ideas within it informative and relevant. The book is written in an approachable way, filled with mini-lessons and examples of her own students writting. An easy read and needed guide for great practice within the classroom. I highly recomend this.

You can let students have choices about what to write and still have formal guidelines, unlike what the other reviewer/teacher wrote. Nancie Atwell's book is based on years of her own first-hand experiences in the classroom, and, as someone who assigns and reads well over 1000 formal essays per school year to over 200 students, I'll listen to Atwell's advice before some burned out teacher's rantings about the need to drill, drill, drill.

Atwell's research and dedication to the true teaching of literacy in classrooms of all levels has changed my philosophy of teaching forever. Those who judge her approach without attempting to understand it, are only missing out on an innovative and fresh approach to how English should be taught.

In my own classroom of tenth graders, I have gone from yawns and glazed eyes to students who leave my classroom at the end of the school year saying "I could write for pages and pages about how you've helped me become a better writer." I still address grammar, literature, "5 paragraph" essay writing, and the dreaded (and overrated)state tests. Instead of being students who force themselves to read and write for a grade, they are readers and writers who are proud of the accomplishments they produce in literacy.

I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about changing the way literacy is taught in our schools, and creating not only engaged students, but people who love to read and write.

I bought two copies of this book from Amazon, for myself and my class aide, on the strength of the other teachers' recommendations here. The book is as good as the most enthusiastic reviewers say it is, but it is seriously flawed, and to some degree self-contradictory, because it talks too much. As good as are the author's approaches, she doesn't really need 484 pages, plus numerous appendices, to get the message across. In fact, she buries the message in verbosity.

Note that other reviewers found the book easy to read. But if you are already convinced that you want to refresh your approach to teaching reading and writing, you may grow impatient with the overabundance of anecdotes, homilies and elaboration.

Teachers know there is no itemized recipe for teaching, but a book on teaching writing could at least demonstrate the virtue of being concise. Mrs. Atwell should read her own quotes and not "cloud the issues with jargon in place of simple, direct prose...." (p. 16). (This is one of numerous quotes of Donald Graves, who returns the favor by endorsing her book in an exemplary brief foreword).

As one who likes quoting great writings in every chapter, the author could have used and applied the Hellenistic Demos: "I will be moderate in all I attempt and do Nothing to Excess."

Summary: it's just too much of a good thing. I'm going to spring for the workbook (Lessons that Change Writers) and generate even more royalties for the author, in the hopes it is more to the point.

A book that helped inspire me to become a teacher. Some other reviewers may not find it totally "practical" for them to adopt, but anyone with common sense would know that you take what works best for you from as many legitimate resources as possible and adapt.

This book is an excellent, well organized combination of case studies and medical science. Dr. Vliet is Board Certified in Pain Medicine, Psychiatry and Neurology, and has performed research investigating behavioral effects of hormones.

Information in this book has helped Florida Detox treat migraines, insomnia, anxiety, depression, interstitial cystitis, hypothyroidism, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia more effectively. Our opiate detox patients frequently arrive with estradiol, progesterone and testosterone deficiencies and almost all of our fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue patients are hypothyroid. Oral Bioidentical Progesterone has produced dramatic anxiety reductions in some of our patients, while bioidentical estradiol has produced dramatic decreases in insomnia and depression in others.

We have also been able to identify previously undiagnosed Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and agree with Dr. Vliet that PCOS is underdiagnosed. This book provides an excellent discussion of PCOS, enhanced with case histories.

It's My Ovaries, Stupid contains a profound discussion of the adverse impact of environmental contaminants, including insecticide, herbicide, poly chlorinated biphenyls, birth control pill residues and food additives. Vliet explains excess glutamate, used as a food additive, can damage the hypothalamus, which is unprotected by the blood-brain barrier. Glutamate can also decrease thyroid hormone and elevate cortisol levels, increasing obesity.

Vliet discusses published research revealing Finnish women with the highest Lindane pesticide levels in their breasts were ten times more likely to have breast cancer. A 1992 Connecticut study revealed women with breast cancer had 50 to 60 percent higher levels of PCB, DDT and DDE, in their breasts.

There has been extensive misleading media coverage of estrogen replacement therapy, since most coverage failed to distinguish between bioidentical estrogens and Premarin or other conjugated estrogens.
Premarin is not identical to human estrogen. Premarin contains approximately 40 percent estrone, while human estrogens are about 3 percent estrone. Estrone is many times more carcinogenic, than estradiol. Premarin also contains equilin, which is many times more carcinogenic, than estradiol, which is the most active human estrogen. Horse estrogens, also called conjugated estrogens or Premarin, were used in the highly publicized Womens Health Initiative study of 27,000 postmenopausal women.

Vliet's discussion of postpartum depression needs to be more widely read and comprehended, since treatment with bioidentical estradiol could eliminate most postpartum depression. If the media would interview Dr. Vliet, instead of puzzled "experts," typically interviewed, after tragic postpartum depression murder/suicides, the public could be informed that post partum depression is treatable.

Vliet also discusses numerous causes of premature ovarian hormone decline, including Lymes Disease, Chlamydia, gonorrhea, hypothyroidism, hyper and hypo adrenalism.

The auther gives a very in-depth explanation of female hormones and their functions and how they can become unbalanced. She gives very specific and helpful advice about what hormones to check for certain symptoms, when to check them, what types of tests, what results mean, etc. It's clear she is on a mission to help women because there really is just a lack of study of female hormones in the medical community and it's obvious that many women can be helped with balanced hormone levels. I'm very glad I decided to get this book as I feel like I won't need to buy any others.

I thought I was going crazy! I was only 26 years old and I was visiting 5 different doctors that were treating me for various problems (weight gain, migraines, acne, depression, hot flashes and recurrent yeast infections). Every doctor told me the same thing...."DIET and EXERCISE or YOU NEED AN ANTIDEPRESSANT"!!! Then I read this book... It all made sense!!! Dr. Vliet helped me understand that a hormone imbalance could affect every part of my body. I didn't waste any time. I called Dr. Vliet and made an appointment. She was the answer to my prayers!

I understand not everyone can call and make an appointment but reading this book helps you understand your body. It takes you step-by-step through what tests to ask for and how to read and interpret your results. Being in the "normal range" may not be so normal for your body!

You may not have PCOS but most women are on birth control pills and all women will eventually go thru Menopause. If you are a woman...read this book. Put your health and life back together.. Knowledge is Power!!!

My mother just turned 50 and has been noticing some changes that she has atributed to hormones. My uncle, a doctor, recommended this book to help her understand what is going on.

Overall my mom really seems to like this book and i would recommend it to other pre-menopausal women.

I have yet to read the book, but I was reading over the reviews and I found it funny that a male was so ticked off that Dr. Vliet only spoke of female issues.
For one, you just appear ignorant for being upset about a disease that will never inflict a male (i.e. PCOS). Secondly men do not visit the doctors as regularily as females do and to try and discredit Dr. Vliet is nonsense!

Most males if they have an ailment will tough it out and figure it will correct itself. I've witnessed many men later on in life get so depressed about their health conditions b/c they were negligent of their own health.

So in conclusion to my rant you truly cannot have any say so over a matter that does not inflict your sex. Better inform yourself on your own health problems and do not think you know all. Men like you in the medical field is why women have to suffer as much as they do b/c they are so selfish, uneducated and narrow minded.

The truth be told everyone needs to keep a better check on their nutrional/mineral value on a daily basis so things do not become out of whack.

Easily the best book on Linux that I have ever read or bought. Also one of the best computer books overall that I have ever used. That is saying a lot given that I have many computer books on the full range of computer topics and given that I am very picky in what I buy. The other reviews - all but one 5-star - give details on the book. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to set up a Linux system or who has an interest in learning about Linux.

In regard to Linux in general, it provides a superior platform to the Microsoft platforms. Also the add-on programs that are available - all of the most useful are included in any of the best-known distributions, such as Ubuntu or Red Hat/Fedora - are as good as (in the sense of user-friendly) as the comparable Windows programs and in many cases better.

What is interesting to me is that much of the Linux development occurs outside the USA. It is a great tribute to the huge Linux-oriented developer universe that those developers have developed such outstanding tools that are free of the exorbitant, monopoly-determined prices of Microsoft products. So I hereby thank you all for your fantastic contributions to computer technology. Without your programs we would all be prey to the monopoly pricing and less-than-optimal programs produced by Microsoft. Not to say that there is anything wrong with most Microsoft products, but thank god there are better products available and better yet that most are free of licensing cost and most are changeable because the source code is available.

It's been two years since I've purchased this book, and I still reference it from time to time.

This book covers many common open-source applications used in conjunction with linux (bind,samba,sendmail,etc).

The examples are well-written. It's a great book for someone who is wanting to educate themselves to use linux.

I will note that the book seems to be red-hat/fedora biased. I use fedora, so that was a plus.

Much of what I have done piecing together information from Google is concisely done in this guide. This book got my mail server setup in no time whereas in the past I gave up in frustration (and lack of knowledge).

The mail chapter alone was worth the price but this book is full of solving common system administration tasks for people with some linux experience but not the expertise of being a sysadmin.

I really enjoy the content of the Book. Since my early days using Linux consult the linuxhomenetworking website for tips & howtos.

This is surely a must have book. It's been a while since I see some book with so much content !!!.

This certainly isn't a hand holding introduction to Linux by any means (jump in at the deep end, it works!). However if you're looking for a down to earth, practical guide to a variety of everyday tasks involved in running Linux in a server environment you'll find this book very useful. The subject matter covered is useful, and the explanations are sufficient with plenty of useful examples. Certainly a good introduction although obviously for the finer points of configuration more specialised sources will need to be consulted.

I read "Sushi For One" about three weeks ago and couldn't wait to get "Only Uni" - but a part of me kept thinking that it wasn't going to be as good as the first book - WRONG! In fact, I truly loved this book more than the first one.

I would love to see the series continue and to include that little snot of a cousin "Mimi" - maybe if I knew why she was such a brat, I could at least like her! Who's with me? =)

Again, Camy surprised me. This book was spiritually challenging for myself, but was daring in the twist it took towards the end. It was realistic and teaches even the reader about God's grace and love as we watch Trish as she grows in her trust of God. I can't wait to read number three, and although I borrowed these books, I want to own them for myself!

This book was hard to put down. Considering that I do not read "chick lit" I think that is a ringing endorsement. Despite me being a middle aged married woman with children, it was easy to root for the heroine, Trish, in all her trials and triumphs. Tang manages to mix up the story line enough that you can never really anticipate what she is going to throw at you but when she does, it is all too real a possibility. Looking forward to her next book due in September.

Camy Tang has another winner with Only Uni. As with the first book, my 13 year old daughter finished it before me (and she never reads). I loved Trish and enjoyed her many disastrous church volunteer endeavors. What a twist at the senior home (I won't give it away)! Can't wait for Single Sashimi to come out.

I would see advertisements for Sushi for One and its sequel, Only Uni in a mail order catalog I get regularly. I kept thinking they looked interesting, but never picked them up. About a month ago I finally read Sushi for One, which was good. I liked the characters, but it made it so that I couldn't wait to read Only Uni. I was surprised to find that I liked Only Uni much better than Sushi. I was able to relate to Trish more than sports-crazed Lex. The writing flowed better, and of course I still wanted to whack Grandma Sakai in the head. I can't wait to read Venus' story in Single Sashimi. These next 4 months will be torture.

Pieces of Silver was a pleasant surprise. Usually when there are so many rave reviews, I'm disappointed but this wasn't the case here. It was a fast-paced, suspenseful, interesting, riveting story. I enjoyed reading about Liesel and her family. The author has an open, honest writing style that makes you feel like you know the characters and are a part of their lives. Liesel Bonner is a German American living and working in WWI America. She loses her job because she is a German- mostly, it seems, because her name is obviously not American. The government doesn't trust Germans, with some good reason- there are spies work amongst Americans who are trying to sabotage U.S war efforts. But Liesel is a determined, strong young woman who doesn't give up on herself and quickly finds a position elsewhere. She is courting her childhood sweetheart and family friend, Josef. He travels a lot for business and doesn't tell Liesel much about his job or discuss himself much at all. He obviously loves Liesel but his actions seem odd. But she soon meets another man, who despite her initial impression, she begins to depend on and like.

There is mystery, intrigue, suspense, history, and a sweet romance. Overall, Pieces of Silver is a wonderful story. I'm looking forward to reading the sequel, Remember Me and excited to explore more of Ms. Lang's work.

It's a great story! Hard to put down until you're done ... and then you wish there was more. Solid Christian values as the foundation coupled with real life struggles involving loyalty, honesty, secrecy, friendship and of course, love.

I bought this book b/c of the good on-line reviews, and I wasn't disappointed. I really loved reading about the time period--World War I. We don't read about that period often in American literature. I knew very little about the prejudices against Germans at that time.
Lang delivers a very good story: strong plot; wonderful characters (great hero and heroine); and lots of well-researched historical background. Although there were technically two heroes, Lang early on gains sympathy for David--the outsider--the ultimate hero. Although initially she describes him as the less interesting one, he quickly wins the reader over with his integrity, sense of fairness, quiet sense of confidence coupled with humility...Well, you get the picture.
The story is really told through the heroine's eyes, a first generation American who is torn between the sympathy she has for her fellow German-Americans and her love for her country, America. She is put in an impossible situation, whether to help a lifelong friend or obey the law and prove her patriotism.
Great read, Maureen Lang!

Very good book. The fear of the American people, during the Great WAr, for anyone German, was interesting. Sad. And there were German/Americans who were very supportive of the American cause, and there were those who were not. Yet the supportive ones still weren't hired for certain jobs in this country.
I found the book to be realistic. It was hard to put down. It was interesting. Better than your typical Christian novel. True to life. Good book. Enjoyed it.

I liked the book, especially due to my German ancestry. However there were a few issues I had with it, most with regard to David de Serre & general character development.

The hero, David, never truly became real to me. For much of the book, he was nothing more than a shadowy threat to Liesel; one I knew in the end would win her heart. His supra-patriotism was at best irksome, though it certainly rings true from the time period. I don't feel he was nearly as well-developed as he could have been. I was left wondering why Liesel had fallen for him, other than the fact that he was the author-intended match. Towards the end of the book, the reader begins to gain a bit more insight into David, making him seem slightly more real. However, his sudden romantic interest in Liesel seems almost forced. Perhaps it was because I as the reader was not privy to nearly as many of David's thoughts & feelings as I was to Liesel's. Overall, though, when I think of David, I think of wood.

The interesting twist at the end of the story left me scratching my head a bit. Is there going to be a sequel? It seems the author so enjoyed the character of Josef, Liesel's "intended", that she couldn't bear to part with him entirely. (I can't blame her. There were times I preferred him to David.)

I enjoyed Liesel's character very much, however I felt like most of the character development was directed solely into her, ignoring the remaining array of characters who splashed across the pages. I really wanted to like David, love Liesel's family, & grieve Josef, but I couldn't. Instead, I was simply relieved that Liesel's life had finally calmed down by the end.

Most of the other reviewers really seem to like this book, which is why I purchased it. It fell short of my personal expectations, though. By the time it was over, I was exhausted, not inspired. I give it 4 stars anyway, because I just loved Liesel. She is a female character worth admiring.

"Pole to Pole" was the second of former Python Michael Palins great travels around the world after the groundbreaking series "Around the World in 80 days", and is equally exciting, thrilling, and entertaining.

This time the team travels along 30 degrees east longtitude from the North Pole through Scandinavia, Russia and the Soviet Union, Africa, (and forced by fate South America) to the South Pole, this being the route covering most land. As with 80 days, and his subsequent travels, "Pole to Pole" is filled with a great, warm spirit of enthusiasm, interest, and real, honest, good humour. Palin guides us, the viewers, through the many different countries and cultures with his usual witty and insightful commentary, and does what the travel industry calls 'the Palin effect' (that you want to go where Palin has gone) great honour.

Describing Palins travel programmes in one word is impossible, but if I had to choose or be beaten to death with a shoe, I'd describe them as inspiring. Truly, utterly, completely, magnificently, and really inspiring. And there cannot possibly be any other quality in a travel programme that is better than that.

The extra material on the DVDs are, as with all the other series, abundant. Lots of clips and segments that didn't make it to the final cut and a half hour interview with Michael Palin.

Highest possible recommendation.

This travel documentary is exceptional, showcasing great landscapes and
various cultures with an element of uncertainty. But what makes it
inspirational is Michael Palin with his spirit of adventure, great sense
of humor and ability to connect with local people.

Palin's journey shows us how people across different ethnicities and
cultures have one thing in common - the 30 degree longitude (as he
travels along this route from North Pole to South Pole). It gives us a
sense of how in spite of our differences in race, religion and culture
we still share the same planet.

We can learn the political, social and economic situations unfolding in
those countries during early nineties. The world has changed a lot since
Palin's journey but his adventures will always be relevant regardless of
time.

This vicarious experience inspires me to embark on a real adventure.

What can one say about Mr. Palin and his enlighting series of discovery and adventure. Pole to Pole and Around The World In 80 Days were the eye opening quests that brought a new look at adventure and the world around us. I first saw these at University and just new I wanted to see the world as Mr. Palin has. Which I now have. He takes the journeys beyond the documentary range of The National Geographic. His, take things as they come and if it can go wrong it mostly likely will, coupled with his wonderful sense of humor. Can only lead one to smile and laugh. His style taught me the value of adventure and that all folks are just folks. Give respect and most of the time you get respect in return. Thanks to this gentleman the world is a little closer. ALTHOUGH THIS IS I BELIEVE THE EARLIEST OF HIS FOUR EFFORTS(SAHARA,AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS AND HIMALAYA ARE THE OTHER THREE)THE ENTERTAINMENT VALUE, HUMOR, AND PURE INFORMATION ABOUT THE PEOPLE, CULTURES AND COUNTRIES HE TRAVERSES IS SIMPLY STATED, EXCEPTIONAL. After the success of Around the World in Eighty Days, Michael Palin embarked on a highly successful career as an adventure tourist. Each of his journeys has a hook: circumnavigating the Pacific Rim, going across the Sahara Desert, or in this case making the journey from the north pole to the south pole following as best as possible longitude 30 degrees.

Along the way, from snow to savannah, from Norway to Nairobi, the charm of Palin's travels comes from the unassuming way he interacts with the people he meets on route. His personality carries the relatively unstructured travalog along on a sea of well-meaning interest and curiosity. He tells us when he's tired, anxious, and bored. We are touched by the genuine friendships he makes, however fleetingly, and the partings are often touching. In Pole to Pole the meat of the journey is Africa and we travel from relatively cosmopolitan Egypt to what in politically incorrect days was referred to as Darkest Africa. Even in 1991 witchdoctors outnumbered the western kind, and random violence was never far from view. Indeed, at one point Palin stays with a European estate owner in Zambia and his family and after the visit is concluded we learn from the voice-over that they were slaughtered six months later.

I spent a few formative years in southern Africa and it was shocking to me to see how little had changed since last I saw it. If anything, most of the change was for the worse: the old trains and buses simply have grown older, the disorder greater. Only in South Africa did time seem to have moved on. For the casual viewer the sheer range of experience in Africa should be fascinating, even though we get the merest glimpse. How can one capture a continent in just a few minutes of video? Like many people, I suspect, my favorite moments were of Palin sitting on top of the slow train creaking its way through Sudan, talking with those who can't afford to travel any other way, and seeming perfectly at home. Somehow Palin makes us forget how unlikely it all is: a well-paid BBC personality squatting among the illiterate and impoverished, interacting with them as though it were the most natural thing in the world. Perhaps no other TV presenter could really pull it off convincingly.

In the end the "hook" seems a little forced: Palin flies in to the north pole and he flies in to the south pole. It's not really much of an epic journey but it was more hazardous than it might seem: when he made the trip to the South Pole there was inadequate navigation and infrastructure and it would have been all too easy for him to have perished due to half-baked preparation and execution on the part of those tasked with ferrying him around. Fortunately all survived and went on to make several other telejourneys to various parts of the world; journeys which are now slowly being remastered onto DVD and released by the BBC. If you don't have the chance to travel much beyond the usual tourist haunts, by all means pick up a copy of Palin's travels and experience the sights, sounds, and people you will otherwise never know of.
