I am an Altar Guild directress. I have bought several Altar Guild manuals, but find this to be the most useful. It is written in a straight forward, easy to understand manner. It is perfect for the beginner. When I train new members, I loan them the book. I invite them to browse through it, but I also point out the sections I "require" them to be familiar with. Somewhere along the line, my copy went missing, and I promptly replaced it. I would not be without it. It is up to date, no nonsense, and yet does not lose sight of the spiritual reasons behind our "heavenly housekeeping."

Very good reading for all altar guild members .

Extremely Valuable Resource for Interval Training for All Endurance Athletes
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-20
Between about 1954 and 1984 I read huge amounts of material on training for middle distance running - books, magazines and journal articles on sports physiology. Nothing I read, and nothing I was told by several High School and College coaches of the time came close to explaining what interval training really was, how it worked or why. This book contains most of this explanatory information in the introductions to each chapter. Once the recovery aspect of this training method was made clear, I could use the tables to design workouts for running 10K and 15K road races. (By that time the "running boom" was growing fast and I had "aged up" into the master's group.) Nonetheless, with no real coaching available in the mid-1980's, I added one good, long, "middle distance" interval session per week. Sometimes I did it every two weeks. I used a combination of a college track and a nearby measured cross country course. I designed several different workouts to avoid boredom. I ended up running faster, longer and with better form than at any younger age. I had to quit competition because of family and job commitments. Otherwise, I think I was headed towards "top ten" rankings (regionally) within the coming year. The only other ingredient a runner needs is a good reference on sensible, active recovery workouts after the interval training and how to be careful in building up your volume of work over the long term to avoid injury. Books on foot care, shoes and orthotics might be good as well. There used to be a booklet by Tom Osler called "The Conditioning of Distance Runners." I suspect it is out of print, but by now there must be updated resources (see books on "periodization"). If you don't have access to a good coach, or even if you do but want to learn more, this may be the best studying you can do. I believe these workouts can be modified for use by swimmers and cyclists without too much difficulty.

This book is cool!

This book helps you see where your running potential lies. You can find out, based on your PR in a given event, how fast your intervals should be run.

Payton Jordan suggested to me to try this book of charts indicating the current progress of a runner and the step-up procedures necessary to improve. It was, and still is, "the" book to understand effort levels and training procedures within the reach of the user!!

Matt Brzycki (Princton U.) and Shaun Brown (Boston Celtics) did an outstanding job of putting together a comprehensive strength and conditioning plan for basketball players at all levels. Our players are challenged, physically and mentally, each and every time they enter the weight room or step on the court by utilizing the same principles outlined in this book. I highly recommend this great resource to all players and coaches wanting to learn more about serious training.

THIS BOOK CHANGED MY SON'S LIFE

I purchased this book for my son during his sophomore year in HS. He was a scrawny 6'2" forward who had been cut from his HS team the year before. Within 6 months he had transformed his body and his game, consistently being the strongest and fastest player on the court. He followed this book religiously through high school and it earned him a number of individual and team awards his senior year, as well as a full scholarship to play Div 1A basketball in college. He still uses it as a guide today.
I cannot recommend this book enough

A wealth of information that is hard to find elsewhere. After reading from cover to cover, I handed it over to my daughters coach and together we developed an off ice training regimen that suits her skill level and reflects her goals. Definite improvement in sucessful jumps completed noticed right away.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is serious about ice skating.

I highly recommend this book. It details off-ice conditioning programs for singles, pairs, or dance and skaters of all ages and skill levels. Strength training, effective warm-up and cool down, plyometric, and other off-ice conditioning programs are detailed, as well as effectively improving your muscular and cardiovascular conditioning on ice. The only negative to this book is the photos and text explaining some of the moves - they could be a bit more descriptive.
A great book from a very qualified author. These programs will yield great results on the ice if you put the time and effort in to conditioning.

This book is an incredible resource for corporate trainers and college instructors! I was able to use the activities in this workbook with my traditional classes, as well as my adult learners in factory and union settings. Students learn better with hands-on activities and through the use of antecdotel stories they can remember. This book combines both to make for a fruitful learning experience. We have long needed a resource of this caliber that takes theory and really shows us how to put it into practice. I will be waiting for more titles from this author.

Conquering life's challenges!

Mr. Hearn's story is terrific! He courageously talks about the ups and downs of professional baseball playing, and ties these to the ups and downs of kidney disease. His story is one of winning, and meeting the challenges, despite being asked to "catch some real foul balls" in his struggle to overcome the limitations of chronic kidney failure and dialysis. I would recommend every professional who works with people who suffer from debilitating, chronic disease to read Mr. Hearn's book!

Hearn is all heart

On the surface, Ed Hearn had a brief and undistinguished career as a catcher in the major leagues. However, there is so much below the surface that needed to be told, and Hearn tells it all, the good and bad.
Hearn had a promising career as a catcher. He gives an excellent look into his life throughout school as a star athlete. He does not hold back as he tells his story, blemishes and all.
Tragically, Hearn was stricken with kidney problems, requiring a transplant. Once again, Hearn tackles this part of the story with brutal honesty. Sometimes it is painful. Sometimes it is heart-wrenching. At all times, it is inspirational.
Hearn never made a major league All-Star team, but he is truly an All-Star in life.

An up-lifting story showing anyone can overcome.

As an avid K.C. Royals fan, I too jumped on the 'Why did we trade David Cone for Ed Hearn' bandwagon back in 1987. After reading Ed's book and meeting him in person, I realize how shallow I was. Ed's story is a must read for all sports enthusiasts and everyone who has overcome and is need of overcoming their own 'curves' in life. God bless Ed on touching lives through this book and his many speaking engagements. His signed copy will always be at the front of my bookcase

I used this book since its first publication years ago and also gave it to figure skating students to read (I am now a retired coach). It works for running, racquetball, stadium jumping. Presently using it for tennis. The hardest thing is to get an elite athlete to take time off to rest. Anxiety drives people to practice, practice, practice. This book explains how and why to avoid disabling injuries for those who want to pursue *rigorous* training for years / decades! Training schedules for various sports are included. Great concepts.

A Must-Read For Every Athlete

Anyone who competes at anything athletic, whether at a high level or just the local Fun Run once a year, needs to read this book. It explains why cyclic training, the classic "two steps forward, one step back" is a must for long-term health and athletic progress.

If simply running a little further or adding a little weight to the bar every day worked, we'd all be world-class marathoners or weight lifters by now. If you want to understand how to exercise for the long haul, this should be the first book you read.

Review Date: 2005-05-03
I found this technique of timed resting and training to set up a peak performance works for everything I do regularly - bicycling, jogging, swimming, even studying for an exam! It's hard for me to take rest days when they come up on my calendar but I've learned through doing it and reflecting on past successes to trust this system. I was convinced to first try it by the examples of people forced to rest who then had big wins, the planned peak successes by other users of the technique and the university studies that showed peak performances using the same timing as Consistent Winning. The idea of peaks and valleys made sense to me. I'm extremely pleased to have read this book and learn the technique.

Jason Forrest provides powerful insight into the relationship between the salesperson and buyer. He walks the reader through stages of the buying process and explains how we can create an essential emotional impact.

I love that Jason gets right to the point with fresh ideas and entertaining stories. It is so easy to implement his ideas and see results immediately! The book is short and to the point and I often refer back to it.

"Creating Urgency" is for anyone that desires to increase their sales and sell more confidently. After implementing Jason's ideas, I have personally seen and continue to see great results in my sales, confidence, relationships, team building, and leadership. This is not a book you will read and forget about-it is absolutely timeless. "Creating Urgency," initially written for the housing market, is absolutely applicable to any genre of sales.

Written by a two-time winner of the National Cutting Horse Association's Futurity and member of the NCHA Hall of Fame, Leon Harrell's folksy and illuminating cutting horse text is an excellent introduction to this sport. Harrell addresses the basic concerns of the novice cutter (and those who are wondering whether this is the sport for them at all) in understandable and clear terms. He offers tips on everything from selection of tack to finding the right horse, provides detailed descriptions of his training methods, and details the rules of cutting competition. Harrell's anecdotes provide effective illustrations of his training techniques and also let the novice know what to expect in competition. He is generous with advice to the newcomer and also with praise to those who have helped him become the NCHA Hall of Famer he now is.

One of the most attractive features of this well-organized, beautifully-illustrated, clearly-written text is simply the feel of the book. Harrell writes about his horses like a man who loves them. His training methods are geared toward getting the most out of a horse, and making the horse enjoy it. He describes cutting as an exciting yet friendly sport, and when he advises the rookie cutter to ask for help from the best riders at a competition, the reader gets the feeling that anyone who asked Harrell for help would get all they needed. He describes his great horses (Smart Date, Nu Bar, Fizzabar, and the rest) with real respect and affection, and when he casually remarks, "I thought the world of [Fizzabar] and the mare thought quite a bit of me" the reader understands why.

Leon Harrell has made a fine career of training horses. He is especially good with the spooky, sensitive ones. After reading this book it is easy to understand why. Leon Harrell is an admirable trainer. He's clearly not too shabby as a man, either. If I am ever in Texas with a young cutting horse, I know who I'll call for advice.

IF YOU'RE INTO CUTTING, THIS IS A MUST HAVE!!!

This is a great book; well written and lots of photographs so you can see what he's talking about. So many of the horse training books are so phony - all in "horse talk" and you don't really understand what they mean. Not this book - it's easy to understand even for a beginner or a spectator.
