I went to Tulane Med and attribute a lot of the clinical pearls I learned to Wiese. I'm currently an intern and find his student/intern handbook indispensble. He's strength lies in effectively communicating complex teaching points by breaking them down into easily understood concepts that stick for years.

As a 4th year student who had a terrible 3rd year (poor teaching, malignant attendings/residents), I was dreading my AI. I felt I did not have a good handle at all on how to deal with patients on the wards. I wish I had read this book before my 3rd yr! It points out WHAT TO DO on wards, etc. in a crystal clear way.

Much better than 1st aid for wards or even scut monkey (which is too detailed for a 3rd yr students). For the 3rd yr who needs something quick and easy to read this is it.

Warning: If you are the type who does not like things being told to you and would rather "jump in" without prior knowledge, this book will suck for you. However, if you are like me, and want somebody to tell you what to do and how to do it....this book is great!

I am the Head Athletic Trainer and Professor of Athletic Training Curriculum at a college in Oklahoma City. This is the best text I have ever read which caters to the education of Athletic Trainers. It is the text of choice for my Care and Prevention of Athletic Injuries class, as well as a source of reference for any challenge I face within the training room. This book is the "Trainer's Bible" bar none! I personally used the eighth edition when studing for the NATABOC exam and have used the ninth and tenth editions in my classes. I highly recommend this text for everyone in the sports medicine field. If you are a Student Atheltic Trainer and are debating whether or not to spent the Seventy-something dollars for this book. this book will make the difference between pass and fail!

This book is one of the most important books for an athletic trainer. It covers everything that is in each of the 5 different domains of an athletic trainer. Their sections on sports injuries, and treatments are invaluable to anyone who is preparing to sit for the NATA exam. It is fondly termed by those that I know as the "trainer's bible." And that is exactly what it is.

The Standard by Which Others are Compared

This huge book, now in its 12th edition was begun in 1963. It is intended for the education of atheletic trainers. Its primary concern is in preventing and when necessary treating sports injuries.

This new 12th edition is a major upgrade to the book. It has been extensively reorganized into major sections that have related subject matter concentrated together. In addition, each chapter has been rewritten to reflect the latest techniques, equipment, procedures, and drugs that affect sports medicine.

The biggest changes are in chapters devoted to the musculoskeletal injuries. These chapters have beeg significantly expanded and are now as comprehensive as possible within the scope of practice in atheletic training.

Finally, each book comes with a license to use the extensive on line support for the book. This is broken into two areas. First is additional information related to each chapter including flash cards, self-quizzes, and other resources. Second is the eSims area which helps students prepare for the atheletic training certification exam.

This is the standard in the industry.

The methods introduced in this book are simply put, easy to follow and a complete guide to perform a Training Needs Assessment.

The book begins with breaking down who, what, when, why and how of an assessment. It introduces the issue that training is not always the solution to a deficiency and how to identify if there is a need for training or a need for another solution.

There are seven different analyses broken down into separate chapters to guide you in conducting successful analyses.

Feasibility Analysis- The cost of doing something verses the cost of doing nothing to correct a deficiency.

Performance Analysis- Also known as a gap analysis, a look at where your employees are and where you would like them to be.

Goal Analysis - Includes how to write a goal statement. Breaking down vague statements into specific behaviors desired by a company for succes

Task Analysis - The book will guide you in breaking down tasks within a job.

Needs versus Wants Analysis - Why should training be done? Is the deficiency tied to a need or a want? Again looking at finding the proper solution.

Target Population - How to develop an effective training program for the audience. How to identify the audience.

Contextual Analysis - How and when to deliver training successfully.

One very interesting point covered is to always deal with the decision maker during every processes. This will save time and money (yours).

Overall, a complete guide to successful analyses.

Presents a Proven Three Phase Plan

First is the collection of information. In order to proceed with any kind of training some information needs to be determined before you can even decide that training is needed. And if it is, what kind of training. Perhaps this is product training for the sales people. Perhaps it is time management. Perhaps the problem being addressed doesn't call for more training but some kind of change in the work flow, the people, or the computer system.

Second is the analysis of the collected information. This may be summaries, complete with charts and tables; this may find something so obvious that you will wonder how it was missed. The end of this phase is to present to the management requesting the study to determine what, if any training is needed.

Finally is the development of a training plan. The author presents a ten part plan that begins with Issue Definition, and ends with an evaluation of the results of the training. These steps have been defined over many years and are a proven approach.

A CD is supplied with the book that includes forms, checklists and other tools that are referenced in the book itself.

Other books I considered purchasing on this topic require interpretation of the content or demand a Masters degree in Organizational Development to understand the author's point. Barbazette avoids those traps and instead offers useful methods and tools in a format I found easy to read and easy to implement. Given the multiple ways I have applied what I learned from the book, I consider this book one of my best purchases in the last twelve months.

"Athletic Forever" provides information on getting into shape without getting injured. It offers nutritional guidance and provides an easy-to-understand overview of the principles of scientific training -- the very guidelines used by professional coaches and athletes for attaining peak fitness. Should you get injured in the course of pursuing sports and recreation, "Athletic Forever" will get you back in the game fast: simply refer to the back of the book where you'll find a comprehensive guide to sports injuries -- how to recognize them and what to do to overcome them. This is a no-nonsense, easy-to-understand book.

It was a great pleasure to read and learn from "Athletic Forever. The Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic Plan for Lifetime Fitness." Dr. Frank Jobe et al have taken on an interesting, contemporary subject in a most timely manner. The glowing forwards from Tommy Lasorda and Magic Johnson illustrate the tremndous respect that professional sports celebrities have for Dr. Jobe and "Athletic Forever." The text is formatted in a logical, concise manner and explores anatomy, injuries and treatment protocol without getting bogged down in needless detail. The KJ facts and closeups clearly add a new dimension to the body of knowlege regarding lifetime fitness. I especially enjoyed the insights with regards to diagnosing the cause of back pain. It is very refreshing to hear from the experts that high tech and costly imaging methods such as MRI's are in many cases unrelated to a patient's back pain. The section on stregthening and flexibility exercises is presented in a straight forward manner yet provides exceedingly valuable information in a refreshingly "low tech" appearance. Perhaps it is beyond the scope of the text, but it may have been useful to discuss 1 or 2 of the Kerlan-Jobe innovations in the field of sports medicine (For example, I would have been extremely interested in the story of Tommy John and the procedures and rehabilitation used in the "rebuilding of his pitcher's arm.") I would highly reccomend "Athletic Forever" to all athletes and health professionals!

Athletic Forever is an excellent health reference book because it doesn't simplify things, as so many new "fitness plans" do. Dr. Jobe & his colleagues simply present good factual information and excellent tips to help people maintain a healthy lifestyle. I found the back section of exercises particularly useful and authoritative.

A DVD that perfectly compliments the 'Building the Pod' podcast that Bruce Williams has been putting out for the last 18 months, and one that has been of great help to me when recording my podcast.

This tutorial DVD takes you through each facet of Audition v2. If you're new to PC recording, you'll get a solid understanding of how to record with Audition. Or if you're making the step up to Audition from Audacity (like I did) or another freeware recording app, Bruce provides all the information you need to start using Audition productively.

The UI of the tutorial can be a little cumbersome at times, but the content is gold. Highly recommended.

Bruce is the best! Not only is he an engaging teacher, but brings decades of audio recording experience to the table. This really helps you understand not only what Audition can do for you, but why. Audition can be a intimidating program even for the most seasoned professional, but Bruce takes you through the program and it's interface in nice easy steps. With the advent of podcasting, users really need to learn how this program can greatly improve their sound quality and set your's ahead of the rest. Great job!

The Best video tutorial for AA 2.0, Hands Down! Why? Read!
Bruce Williams guides you through this tutorial and does so with expertise. He has been an audio tech for over twenty years and has been using AA since it's original development, more than seven years ago. He knows this product!
The DVD has a professional look and Bruce uses a building block type of instruction, starting with the basics and progressing through to the many advanced features of AA 2. This DVD is the best place to start if you just picked up AA 2.0 or even if you are an advanced AA user and want to dive into 2.0's advanced features.
Nice job by both Lynda and Bruce!! Good-On-Ya-Mate!

I bought this author's Autodesk VIZ CD and liked it so much I decided to try the AutoCAD 2000 CD because that's what I use. I really liked it too. The things I like best are:

1) Its cheaper than other CD's and covers more commands.
2) It also covers more than even the big books like
Inside AutoCAD. Its _all_ tutorials so its easy to
understand.
3) Its easy to install. Just follow the directions.
4) Its easy to use. I like using ALT + TAB to switch back
and forth between it and AutoCAD. The READ THIS FIRST
page is the only thing I had to read in order to
understand exactly how to use it.
5) Its easy to print the tutorials. I set my properties
when I print to put two pages on each piece of paper
to save printer ink. I read the tutorials like magazine
articles - they very easy to follow because there are lots
of pictures. You should do this too. The tutorials are long
sometimes.
6) No animations, which is good because they suck up space
and you can't print them, and they are boring to watch -
if I wanted animations I would buy a video which there
are two million of.
7) The index is very good - commands are easy to find
8) It covers everything - beginner, intermediate,
advanced topics. Lines, arcs, circles -> object tracking
and dimension styles -> dimension families, plot style
tables -> 3D commands & custom menus/toolbars. I think
its like 80 hours or more of training. I haven't finished
it yet.
9) The author writes back if you email her questions about
the tutorials. I didn't understand Otrack (even after
I did the tutorial which I didn't read carefully enough)
and she wrote back when I emailed her. She knew exactly
what I was doing wrong. She's very polite.

I recommend this CD very highly. In fact I like both the
things I purchased from this company. The VIZ CD is very good too.

One warning - this isn't a "for dummies" product. Its for people that actually want to learn the product and use it to do real work. If you are looking for something really easy this product might not work well for you.

I can't believe this CD is so good! I never knew it was possible to get training, REAL TRAINING, without going to a class. But this CD really delivers. In under two weeks, I've gone from a beginner to an Expert. (Well, I'm making 3D models which seems like expert stuff to me.) Oh, and I got stuck and sent an email to the publisher. Within 24 hours I had an ANSWER from a REAL LIVE PERSON that got me going again. Tell me another publisher that cares enough about its readers to answer their questions. This CD is like a teacher in a box!

We couldn't leave our dog in the back yard because of her barking at children, at neighbors, at the enemy cats next door, at joggers . . . everyone and everything. After three or four days of following the suggestions in this book, we have no more annoying barking. None! It's a miracle.

I don't know this author and have no stake at all in her selling this book. But if you have a behavior problem with your dog, you'll never spend a better fifteen dollars (with shipping).

On Saturday morning 2nd August 1997 I took my dog "Chisel" a boxer staffy X for a walk as usual to the shops. And as usual he dragged me from the moment I left my house to the moment I returned. My hands were sore and my arms were tired. At the shops he also jumped up playfully onto a passer by who was clearly not impressed.

I had heard about "Bark Busters" and had seen the book at the vets. I went down to my nearest bookstore on Saturday around lunchtime and bought the book. I read through the first half and then turned to my specific problem on dogs "pulling" on the leash.

By Monday morning 4th August 1997 my dog was walking calmly by my side and it was once again a pleasure to take him for a walk.

There are some other problems I would like to cure and I am confident that using the techniques outlined in the book I will have no problem

I got a Jack Russels terrier three months ago and when I brought her home it was like bringing Tarzan home from the jungle. This little creature was totally uncivilized, knew nothing, turned our lives in a living hell. The first thing she did was to bite me when I attempted to clean her ears (thank God she had the baby teeth when she did that!). She was barking & biting us, no one would dare to touch her! My little "Tarzan" finally responded to her name after a whole month. I was so surprised with her behavior, comparing her to my poodle who brought all her good manners with her upon birth and learned everything almost instantly. I was really in a bad situation with her since I had to find a way to civilize my Tarzan and make her part of the family. I got a few books on training, and used my own methods I used for my poodle but none of them would work. Tarzan would still bite us, bark any time of the day and unfortunately night too, take things from the coffee table, drink our coffee from the cup when left alone, and take GOOD care of all the plants in the house!

That's when this book came to the rescue. I must say I was very surprised with the techniques the author uses, but since I was desperate and had nothing to lose I put those methods to work. Well, after only a week Pinky learned more than what I tried to teach her in two months time.

The author is down to earth when it comes to dog training, making it clear that you have to understand that it's a dog you are trying to train and not human. She shows you the dog's point of view in order to understand their behavior better. Why they do the things they do, their way of thinking, and how you can can solve those problems. How would I know that by just spraying plain, natural water on her face would stop her from biting! But it did. That simple. Or when you want your dog to come to you, you must not run after her as she takes that for a game, but simply sit down and pat your legs.

We all love our dogs, there's no doubt. If we didn't, we wouldn't have got them in the first place. But that doesn't stop them from barking or biting. Just showing love and affection to the dog won't solve any behavior problem. If you are in the same situation I was, get this book, and you will see the benefits from the very first lesson. Thank you Mrs. Wilson.

With consistency and a strict adherence to the motivational methods in this book, my own dog learned to work non-narcotic scents and indicate even though this book is strictly for narcotics. These methods have an even broader base of application. A must for anyone who wishes to introduce air scenting in their dog's training program.

Basic Training for Spiritual Combat: Taking Back the High Ground: A One-On-One Guide

This book is not passive reading!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-12-30
In Basic Training for Spiritual Combat by Jay Carty, readers learn to overcome areas in life where the devil has gained a foothold. It focuses on such specific struggles as controlling anger, resisting sexual temptation, and establishing God-honoring priorities. The author makes good use of humor, using it like seasoning in a dish, while still discerning when to be serious. There are plenty of illustrations, parables, examples, lessons from the Bible, and other helpful bits that make his major points easy to understand.

What's unique about this book is that it's not passive reading. Readers will find numerous agreements to make between themselves and God. There is, for example, a chapter titled, "It's Time to Thump the Devil's Rump," which contains prayers to pray that invoke the power of God, demolishing the strongholds the enemy has built in one's mind. Those uncomfortable using a prayer that someone else has written, can still use these prayers as guides for original prayers. Occasionally the author advises to stop, put down the book, and pray over a certain matter. The writer wants to make sure that readers don't just blitz through his book, all the while neglecting the One who has the power to make the changes in your life.

Overall, the book was interesting and informative. Its only real weakness was the occasional use of innuendo and slang, which makes the book hard to understand in places. That said, anything significant is communicated clearly and with a bit of humor, making this a worthwhile book. The style is most appropriate for the ages of thirteen to thirty, but is still a great reading experience for anyone. -- Cameron Miller, Christian Book Previews.com

This is book is terrific! Written in a lively manner, Jay Carty specifically in detail gives practical Biblical suggestions for "stomping on" sin. The "polar bear alert" alone is worth the price of the book. If you are a Christian and you think you already know "the basics", this is a great "next step" book on how to fight the daily temptation we all face in our lives. Jay is a former center for the LA Lakers and does not write from the viewpoint of a stuffy scholar. I encourage you to buy this book!
