Excellent tool for parents.

This book is exactly what parents need who want to be positively involved in their children's education. Williams defines the educational lingo (babble)-- effectively empowering parents to understand what's being taught (or not taught) in the schools. A great tool for any parent who desires to make real changes and improve the quality of education their children receive.

This book is entertaining and informative. It empowers parents to go to their schools and take back the classrooms. Although relatively small (75 pages), this paperback covers a little bit of everything pertaining to Sibes. From breed standards to training to breeding. For it's price it covers a lot of ground but might not go into the detail one might expect from a larger book. However, for it's size and price I feel it is an excellent book worthy of purchase for any owner of the Siberian Husky.

A general guide to the Husky-a must for first time owners.

This small book could not have hoped to cover "Everything..." as it claims, but I have found it to be useful on many occasions. It provides a general guide to almost every conceivable situation and concern, providing the quality of advice a new owner needs. An owner of a new sibe puppy will want to supplement this book, so they should consult their breeder-use an established husky kennel, not a backyard breeder-other texts, and their vet. Other topics, like medical/health and diet, will likewise be covered in more detail in other places. Don't stop with this book but do get it if you are with sibe. And hang on to that leash!

I found the book very informative and easy to read. It lays down a plan on how to improve your game and requires you to commit a half hour several days a week if you truly want to improve your game. Each chapter builds upon the previous one and I found it worthwhile.

This book is the first coaching manual, I've seen, that covers the non-technical, as well as the technical, aspects of the game. Tom has such a common sense approach, and it is such a fun read, that I found it very easy to put it all into practice. And guess what, not only did my golf game improve, but my enjoyment of the game is back. Time to go out there and have fun again!!

This is a must have if one is serious about improving all aspects of one's golf game.

An excellent insight to the sports scene at all levels
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1998-09-13
This book came on the scene in the middle seventies and Michener covers the gamut of the problems and excitement of sports dealing with beginners to the pros. Most of what is written can still be adhered to today as the ideas and concerns seem to occur now just as they did a few years ago. This book should be must reading for all sports minded people and applying the suggestions to today's market. A great book.

An Overview on Sports You Won't Find in the Media
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-08
This book is well worth reading by everyone: players, viewers, or to know more about the subject. James Michener loved sports: they made the difference between life and death. As a youth he drifted into a bad crowd, but was saved by athletics. His skill in basketball led to a scholarship to college, rather than prison. Later in life he suffered a heart attack, and was delayed in getting to a hospital. He survived because his robust exercise helped his heart to develop alternate feed lines (p.8).

Chapter IX discusses "The Inescapable Problem" of aging and the decline in physical ability. Walking, swimming, and tennis are doable from ages 5 to 85 (pp.274-5). Most other sports peak at ages 24 to 32; forty is the usual limit. The author notes that athletes are provably in better shape than the general public; but their life expectancy is worse. Could this be a side effect from the fame and glory?

He discusses the case of those who get a sports scholarship. They spend their college time in sports, play professionally for a few years, then disappear. He shows that those who study in college (like accounting) can earn far more onver a lifetime than those who quickly burn out.

I just joined a masters' swim team. I was the same age as John Jerome when he swam in this book. I just found this book motivating and that it increased my knowledge and understanding of elite athletes. It also taught me more about the world of competitive swimming. The book mainly dealt with people who were good swimmers/competitive swimmers when they were younger. I wish at least one swimmer like me without previous experience was in the book, but I still found the book had application to me. I reccomend it.

I was a swimmer throughout my younger years. It seems that only swimmers can understand why and how swimmers do what they do.... John Jerome, in his own style and grace, creates a book that really hits home. Super for: teenage swimmers, coaches and parents of swimmers.

Well, I bought two books. The other one is about a guy who is trying to be a cross country skier. I am glad that I read the other one first otherwise if I read John's book first the other one will be super boring. This book is not just about how he becomes a swimmer but rather how people should deal with the inevitable - aging. I enjoy his writing so much that i bought 3 more of his books.

Inspirational, especially for the budding, mid-life athlete.

I read this book after a suggestion in Phil Whitten's book on swimming. It was hard to find, but very inspirational to me as I was getting heavily into serious swimming and athletics at 48, the same age as the author was when he got back into swimming. His adventures are thoughtfully described and his experience easy to identify with. The book got me interested in Jerome's other works, which are also very involving.

Received this book, read about training the bow and went right out to my horse. I have been trying to get her to HOLD the bow for about 4 months. Well, of course, your instructions worked and she understood and completely relaxed and waited while I fed her a carrot. Thank you! Thank you! Now we will be able to move on to the kneel and lie down, sit up and even rear! I think this book is great and it truely is step by step.

The Best Devotional for Kids

Review Date: 2008-05-09
Wow, when I picked this book up in the Christian Book Store I was immediately taken by it. I've always looked for devotionals that would really hold my childrens' interests and this is it! Each day there is a new "sticky situation" that a child is in, and it gives multiple choice answers to figure out. Then it tells you where you can find help in the Bible (give a verse) and how to discuss this. The cover itself is hilarious and gets the kids to look inside. I have a 7yr old girl and 10.5 yr old boy and this book is great for both. It will be good for my son until he's at least 12. I also got the first version of this book which is just as good :) These are perfect to do either during breakfast in the morning or during dinner in the evening as a family. We keep them on our kitchen counter along with a Bible. You'll love it :)

I have 2 grade school boys that enjoy this book of devotions, the Sticky Situations: 2 book is packed full of real life situations, easily identifiable by your children with real life problems too! This book is divided by monthly topics, such as.. January's topic is love and kindness and so forth. I like the stories in this book different than others because the situations are vivid, believable, things that could and do happen every day at school, like... I WORE MY WWJD BRACELET TO SCHOOL AND THE CLASS BULLY ASKED ME WHAT IT STOOD FOR, DO I TELL HIM? Other stories include kids playing video games and resulting conflicts, comic books, tithe, neighbor friends, Sunday School...so many more. After each devotional story, there are multiple choice questions for you to read with your kids or them alone. Sometimes, more than one answer is possible, one is better than the other. The answers really get kids talking about the right path that should be taken, and also an opportunity for kids to share similar things/stuggles they've encountered and how better they can choose to react next time. A Bible reference is printed at the bottom of the page, the verse is not listed within the book.

I manage a distributor sales force throughout the U.S. and Canada. After reading this book (actually WHILE reading this book) I applied the information and witnessed immediate success, as did my sales reps. The information is direct, common sense, well presented, easy reading and entertaining. It is not full of 'theory', but actual 'meat' that can be applied each day after reading even a chapter or two the night before. I am buying books for each of my reps and feel it is one of the best gifts I could ever give them. Well done!

From my many varied experiences, I realize that I just don't like selling, but when I was trying to bone up on my sales skills, I found this book to be the most useful. It is heads and shoulders above other books on the subject and it was so intersting that I probably read it cover to cover in a day or two. The advice is extremely practical and you are learning great principles of selling. You are not learning a bunch of closing dialogues that only work for the person who invented them. Easily digested, the principles allow you to adjust your approach in mid-sale because you are asking questions whose answers will tell you what you need to do or say next (positioning.) Tons of great info here. It should really be a textbook for sales classes.

Great advice (if you can assimilate it)

Review Date: 2001-05-25
The problem with any "how to sell" book like this is, until you can integrate the advice given here so that it comes naturally to you, you will sound as mechanical and forced as some of the "tellers" Richardson criticizes. I used to sell big-tiicket business-to-business, and I can say the advice here is timeless: engage your customer, identify what your customer's needs are and position your product so that the customer realizes that your product meets their needs. Of course, if the customer doesn't need your product, then maybe you need to learn some of those "hard-ball sales" techniques (or find a better product!). No amount of customer empathy, listening, or product positioning will help you overcome a customer-product mismatch. Which brings me to a point: although Richardson argues against this, I think playing hardball has a place in negotiations; remember, the party you are negotiating with doesn't always have to feel warm and cozy inside in the process. A true persuader will know when to be soft and fluffy and when to apply the pressure.

Also, the whole paradigm-replacement languuage ("we are moving into a new age of selling...") is corny. The advice Richardson is giving is not new or revolutionary, as she claims. But she has succeeded in organizing a lot of really good sales principles in a clear and coherent way which can easily be appreciated by readers.

I read this book together with Richardson's "Selling by Phone" and frankly, one is just a rehash of the other. Richardson copied entire paragraphs from one in writing the other. So save your money and buy just one of the two. But if you are an accidental salesperson, or even if by trade you are not a salesperson but you are occasionally called upon to negotiate (maybe you are a lawyer or a manager) Richardson's books will be a refreshing introduction to the discipline of negotiation and persuasion.
