Being a current flight instructor in the Naval Aviation Training Command I can atest that Jay Stout's book "tells it like it is." It is an accurate, informative and interesting tour of what a young man or woman goes through from the day they show up to begin training, through the awarding of the coveted "Wings of Gold". Clearly written, technically correct and well illustrated, Jay has authored the authoritative primer for anyone considering or interested in becoming a Naval Aviator. A must read!!

This is a well-done, picture book that takes you from the commissioning process (Academy, ROTC, OCS) to API and then through the different pipelines to the wings of gold. Seems most of the primary pictures came from Whiting, and the advanced portion is a little heavy on the Jet Syllabus- many pictures from Kingsville (written by a Jet Pilot) Overall a great picture view of the different phases of training. Makes a great gift for the family of a Naval Aviator for them to understand and see some of what takes place

Stolovitch and Keeps have again (after their wildly popular Telling Ain't Training)demystified all of the processes and procedures for moving your organization from one that is mainly concerned about training to one that is focused on performance. Training is an activity. Performance is an activity coupled with the result of that activity and this book provides all of the methodology for getting valued results for your organization. Its fast paced style and fun to do exercises will make this book the one book on your professional book shelf that just ain't going to gather dust.

Concise, clear, and readable introduction to HPT/HPI
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-06
Like the other reviewers, I find this book to be exceptionally clear and well-written, and provides a great introduction to the key concepts of human performance improvement (also called human performance technology). It's deceptively simple, because the book has a rigorous intellectual base, and cites key theories, authors and research in the field (not surprising, because Stolovitch and Keeps also co-edited the definitive handbook in the field).

I used the book as a text in my graduate course in human performance technology. It offers many benefits as a textbook. It's readable, so it invites students to read it. It's interactive as well, which makes the reading experience more of a learning session, rather than just an absorption session.

Through these activities, the book makes the abstract and admittedly difficult-to-grasp concepts of human performance improvement concrete.

It also helps me model a key performance concept: build on small successes to create effective performance. Because this book is accessible, my students--many of whom are new to both the field and graduate education--can demonstrate success early in the program and that inspires them to greater success.

Once again, Harold and Erica have co-authored a book which is practical, content rich and great fun to read. This book is a "must read" for anyone who wants to learn more about training, about performance and how they are different. All the worksheets, case examples and key points that are identified ensure this book will be a valued resource and not just a book to store on the shelf.

Top Performing Book!

This book provides practical ideas and insights about how to best manage performance in the workplace and best invest your training dollars. Too often, we use training as the panacea to resolve workplace performance issues. Harold explains when training is really necessary and when other interventions are best suited to resolve those issues. This book should be read by business owners and managers, not just by trainers or human resource professionals.

Total Transformation

Review Date: 2008-01-27
My adopted Malamute (very difficult dogs at times) only listened to my commands (sit, down, stay) when he was on a leash and when he felt like it. "Come here"? Forget it, leash or no leash, he didn't listen to that one at all. Oh, and he always jumped on counters, yes, even while I was in the room at times.

6 months of problems I've had with this dog practically disappeared in the one week I've been putting this book in practice, and he's still learning.

He was a spoiled princess who couldn't be trained with "positive" methods, but by following the stricter methods in this book, he actually took things more seriously. He's now more attentive than ever before, comes when called and responds to orders. A bit slow on responding to the orders sometimes, but the transformation alone is enough for me to want to put this book on some kind of alter though. Honestly. Hahaha.

I did have difficulties understanding some parts in the book straight away, but I really do recommend this book.

5+ stars, man.

Best dog training book.

The translation is a little rough because it is about fifty years old. But overall this book is hands down the best book for training a dog to listen every time. If you are tired of the positive pet programs that both you and your pet are sick of then this book will put you on the path to a happier dog owner and pet. But listen be careful because if you read this and then only put part of it into practice then the results are your fault.

Konrad Most is famous worldwide for his theory and principles of dog training which is still used widely today, even though many dog training methods has changed, the principles are still very much the same. This book is excellent for those that wish to learn more about their dogs and those that are studying the principles of how to train a dog. Col. Konrad Most is also known as the father of modern dog training and understanding his philosophy of dog training would be very beneficial for those that are keen in such discipline.

A Psychological Cornerstone In Dog Training & Behaviour
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-09
I have been a Police Dog Handler with the Australian Air Force for over 23 years and this book still remains my bible. Other training books tell you 'how', this book explains the 'how' AND the 'why'. The fact that it was written so long ago misleads a lot of people into thinking it may be out of date.... It's no more out of date than the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. Other new age training methods may come and go but the methodology described by Konrad Most has been taken up by many others like William Koehler and is still used in over 90% of Police & Service Dog agencies around the world.

I highly recommend this book to any professional trainer or enthusiast who wishes to really understand the psychological principles behind how and why a dog works. By understanding these techniques you will be able to look at other less efficient methods and see why they fall short when it comes to speed, reliability of response and the ability of a dog to work at peak performance under duress situations.

I am very impressed with this training fan. It's compact, so you truly can bring it anywhere you choose to go. If you don't have room in your suitcase for free weights (too heavy, or what have you), that's okay because there is an "equipment-free" workout outlined in this "fan". How awesome is that? Of course, if you have a little extra room in the 'ol Samsonite, you might want to throw in an exercise band or two. There are outlined exercises for those, too! Oh yeah, and if you are near a gym, bring this little thing with ya...there are exercises and a full routine explained in this fan. Yes, this truly is the mother of all strength training workout guides. What a unique gift to give the exercise ethusiast, too!!!

The winner of the Writer's Digest's 10th Annual International Self-Published Book Awards in the "Reference Category", The Training Fan is a very clever, quite compact training guide composed of 96 pages of bookmark-size strips bound in such a manner as to easily spread out like a fan. Exercises are organized by color-coded muscle groups and include anatomical illustrations, explanations of muscle mechanics, guidelines for strength and cardiovascular training, feature an erasable training log, and is enhanced with three complete workouts, using body weight, machines and dumbbells or resistance bands. Unique, "user friendly", highly portable, The Training Fan is a welcome and highly recommended addition to any personal exercise and physical health reference collection

This book makes working out easy-- even for a beginner like me. The exercises are well illustrated and easy to understand. I also like how it is divided into sub-groups based on what you have to work out with. Since I don't have a gym membership it's a really helpful guide to use at home, and small enough to travel with too!

I absolutely love this product! I read about it in a health related magazine and bought it specifically for a friend who is a fitness trainer. Unfortunately, she may not get it because I plan to keep it in my gym bag for reference.

The price is right for what it contains. I'm a competitive racewalker although I'm currently training for a half marathon. Definitely try to market this product to health clubs--it's terrific!

The Training Fan is helping me make my new year's fitness resolutions easy. I take the fan to the gym to customize my gym workouts; I use the fan in my home when I am stretching in front of the TV; I take the fan with me when I travel to keep my workouts consistent.

I have found the pictures and descriptions of each exercise extremely easy to follow. I also enjoy how the fan is broken out by body part to help me focus on specific body areas.

Both women and men in my gym have noticed me using this new tool and I recommend they, and you, purchase The Training Fan.

I loved this book! I normally use books like this as a sleep aid, but this one kept me awake and interested the whole way through. This guy has a very easy and straight forward way of explaining these complicated concepts as well as instructing the reader to watch for the horse's natural ability. Because the whip needs to be used on the legs of the horse for the more advanced moves, he constantly reminds the reader that these lessons need to be applied with patience and kindness, and to praise the horse for the slightest attempt.

If you have a horse built for extreme collection and want to try something different, this book is for you.

I've worked with this book every day for the last 12 years. I used to keep a copy in my desk at work, as well as passed along copies to other spiritual friends. This book will teach you much about how the world relates to you. It has the potential to erase a lot of negative thinking. It could turn you into a people-pleaser! Therefore, it must be used with meditation, and ideally the assistance of a spiritual master. These teachings have the potential to challenge every bit of strength you have. I think Americans have a tough time with Buddhism, as we are acculturated to conduct ourselves in public with self-worth. Whereas the Heart Slogans, adapted from Atisha, who was a student of Buddha, will rub you raw. So I think these teachings shift our awareness from self-esteem towards being more genuine. These practices can conflict with your personal boundaries. If you're a student of psychology, you would want to think about how the Slogans work for establishing respect with colleagues, family, etc. If you want a healthier, simpler, more honest life, this book will take you there. It will show you how you relate to the three poisons, jealousy, attachment and ignorance. This can be detrimental. It's good to have a support-system of like-minded Buddhist friends and teachers.

What do salty sailors, communists, ad execs, and Tibetan Buddhists have in common? The Power of Slogans! From `Have a Coke and a Smile' to "Be all that you can Be", the brain loves a good saying. This book is Trungpa's translation of the 59 slogans used to instruct Tibetan Buddhists, with his commentary on each. Trungpa is unassailable as an instructor: the 11th generation of a line of chosen Tibetan Trungpas, he went to oxford on a scholarship and then moved to the US in the 1970's where he founded what remain as among the foremost Buddhist/meditative institutions in the country. I tend to believe Buddhism gained a little more than it lost en route to japan, so I prefer the zen stuff, but this book has a lot to offer anyone. Some nitpicking: For a guy who dedicated his life to bringing jargonless Buddhism to the west, the book is a little full of `mystical-sounding foreign words' though thankfully the glossary is very fine. And plenty of important Buddha concepts don't shine through (cause and effect, and the big mirror concepts don't get too much play here) so just make sure this isn't the only book you read on the topic. And some of the slogans are simply not too memorable and consequently lose their force; `always be grateful' is dandy, though `the mahayana instruction for ejection of consciousness at death is the five strengths' seems like an important one that alas probably won't be dancing off too many tongues at the critical moment. Still this is a fine book, a great book for beginners or advanced alike, coming from any tradition whatsoever. & the small format fits well, making it a great book for commutes or travels. Enjoy! (& remember: just because I didn't like the book as much as you doesn't mean you should vindictively vote against my review!)

It is always amazing to me that more people don't know the wonderful work that Trungpa did in bringing Buddhism to the West. He was a proponent of loving kindness who skillfully assisted thousands in understanding both the basic precepts of Buddhism, and specific traditions of Tibetan Buddhism as they are now practiced in both East and West.

This small format book is a wealth of information -- more than the mere "slogans" which lead each section. It is a careful revelation of principals and practices one usese to train the mind, emphasizing how one can use compassion and intelligence in dealing with everyday situations. A real gem of a book to read and read again.

I am new this year to the Triathlon world and this book has helped me in my training more than anything besides hiring a personal coach. The programs are easy to follow and take approx 30 minutes to complete each day. You can choose whatever exercise you want to tailor it to your needs. I was never into stretching until I started this "guide". Now I understand why stretching and core strength are important in a Triathlete as well as in life. I give it 4 stars only due to the fact that it took me a while to figure out which exercise was what. Other than that if your looking to prepare for a Triathlon or even just want to get fit in approx 30 min a day, then this book will help you.

Excellent resource for serious traithletes and amateur atheletes alike. I purchased this book for my triathlete husband and one of his daughters who is a runner. Although he majored in physical education and has been an active athlete, teacher, and trainer himself all his life, this book has still helped him to improve his running ability. He now also owns a Seiko metronome and making good use of it with his indoor training on our treadmill. My husband is now 69 and still a winning triathlete!

As a triathlete going on my 15th season, I have seen most of the stuff out there. This book is great in that it starts by teaching running technique, which most people ignore. Sure we all know technique is crucial in swimming, but it is in running as well. The author also has a video on his "Evolution" run technique which I have on order.

He claims to have achieved significant efficiency and hence speed improvements in even long-time elite runners, and I believe it. Look at it it this way - you can spend $1000 on race wheels and gain 30secs, or spend a few dollars on this book and/or video and gain more time through efficiency increases.

He also points out that most running injuries are caused by poor technique, and I agree completely. If you have a nagging injury, fix your technique. I have seen this work myself on many runners - try it.

A wonderful bonus is that this book contains one of the best summaries of eating to get and stay lean that I have seen. An entire chpater is devoted to this, and makes the book well worth it if you are just trying to figure out how to lose weight.

This is a worthy and high return on investment book for any triathlete.

Hands on Instructions for Efficient Running

Sometimes you're glad when you're asked by Amazon to review a book - in some cases due to the fact that they stink, in others because you've purchased something that you really feel that you can recommend to others. This book belongs in the second category.

The Triathlete's Guide to Run Training is simply the most comprehensive and well structured, easy-to-read, hands-on book about running that I've ever seen (and believe me, as a triathlete I've gone through everything from Posetech to ChiRunning in my quest for reduced run times).

The book will take you through Technique (the actual physics of running, i.e., where does all that energy go that you spend on the track?, how to reduce energy waste and maximize forward propulsion, etc.), Training (planning, bricks, etc.), Preparations, and finally, Racing. The way it's done makes you understand just how good Mierke must be as a coach: everything is short, crisp and to the point.

If you're training by yourself, there are plenty of drills in the book that will take you a long way towards better running efficiency. If you're a coach, there's a lot of stuff from basic to advanced that you can use in your coaching. If you're training with a coach, give him the book and ask him to use it when coaching you - I did and the result has been remarkable: not only do I run faster, I run almost effortlessly after hard biking, and - moreover - I enjoy my running even during races. The only thing that has made that much of a difference for my racing is Total Immersion Swimming (which, by the way, also focuses on efficiency rather than raw power).

In short: highly recommendable book for anyone who's interested in running faster and more efficient (is there anyone who doesn't?). Extra plus for the integration of running into biking specifically and triathlon in general.

Profound and powerful, Turning Change into a Payday provides brilliant, timely directions that make us look past the drama in our lives.....at ourselves; it steers us back toward the spiritual principles of self-examination, integrity, courage, and contribution. Ralph Bruksos is right....in this ever-changing world, the only thing we really control are the choices we make. Bruksos pulls the covers on the dead-end paradigm --"Happiness is knowing who to blame".

Our bookstores are filled with titles offering a look at change - the cause, need for, and how to. Closer examination has revealed to me that there are an abundance of prophets and very few practitioners. Bruksos' writing style actually shows me through his experiences how he has practiced what he preaches. Read Turning Change into a Payday and join me on the high road to freedom.

If you read this volume, you will know how to accept and benefit from any change in your life, and how to help others do the same. In this book, Ralph writes that when we are ready to learn, the teacher will appear. That is certainly true in my case. I want to share with you how - as student of Ralph Bruksos, I have benefited from applying his teachings to my life.

One day in March 2000, I received a phone call from Ralph, who was looking for someone to create a brochure for him. We met and, after just one hour in his presence, I understood that I needed to visit his book-lined office on a regular basis -- not only as a creative consultant, but as a client! Ralph was kind enough to take me on, and I -- the owner of a business with one employee (me), joined the company of CEOs, VPs, executives, salespeople, and business owners who have improved their businesses and their lives by working with Ralph Bruksos.

In his work with me, Ralph gently began to help me understand the many ways I was, in effect, missing out on the extremely positive opportunities that lay at my feet. Gradually, I became aware of the root causes of why I was feeling so stalled out in my life, relationships and career.

About two years later, Ralph honored me with an invitation to edit his book. It proved to be one of the most valuable experiences of my life. As I worked on the book, I began to apply the lessons contained in Turning Change Into A Payday to my life. I delivered the body, stopped blaming others , wrote down my goals , sought ways to close the loop for myself, stopped getting my story straight, and recovered my empathy for others.

As the book consuls, I saw every day as a choice I could make to do better. I was surprised to learn that life of a man whom I only knew as happy, prosperous, and sucessful had in fact been much harder and more challenging than mine. This was a teacher, I realized, who really understood change because he had mastered it in his own life.

Suddenly, my phone began to ring again with new jobs and wonderful opportunities. New friends appeared. I started moving through the changes I had put off, and felt much better.

Ralph is a modest and humble man. He has never bragged to me about what he's done to help others, but I am certain that I am only one of many he has reached out to and - with his characteristic love, compassion, and wisdom - guided to the path of happiness and prosperity. I think of this book, Turning Change Into A Payday as a natural extension of Ralph's mission to help others. By writing his lessons down, he can spread the word to far more people than he could consult with one-on-one.

You, dear reader, may not have the benefit of such powerful personal interactions with the author of this book. However, you do have the opportunity to buy and read this book, which contains the same lessons, stories and original thinking that Ralph uses as the basis for his consulting that has positively impacted countless numbers of people.

As Ralph would probably say, it's your choice.

In my career I have read many books on change management, goal setting, leadership and human relations. I must admit that I have enjoyed most of them. However, many don't stick and really cause me to take action. Well, this book has been the sometimes needed "kick in the butt". If you are looking for inspiration it's a good read.

well written story, cool new world. the characters feel real, easy to relate to. Megan, in particular, is not just a submissive woman; she's smart, fierce, emotional. her trials and errors are believable. many times i thought "i would have reacted like her." a thorougly enjoyable reading experience.

Not just kinky sex, but plot, characterization and world building!

I grabbed this book on a recent smutty fiction shopping spree. This was the best of the books I ordered.

The basic plot is that Megan lives a humdrum life until kinky aliens (Khyrians) kidnap her and whisk her away to a planet where everyone is sexually liberated and BDSM is considered not just normal, but honorable. "Two Moons" isn't a bunch of sex scenes strung together, but instead deals with Megan's attraction to the Khyrians along with her fear and confusion. Additionally, we find out about Khyrian society without the author giving us a 2 page info-dump. I really enjoyed the characters and plot, as well as the erotic scenes. I plan to purchase more of her books.

Mmmmm, if her short stories are the knife, this is the cake we've been waiting for Chelsea Shepard to bake. Of course, being Adrian Hunter's partner in crime and especially punishment might be time-consuming. Encore!!!

Shephard is at the top of her game!

Finally! What an awesome 4-star read. Ms. Shephard has a unique ability for true character development along with inventive scenes. I was immediately pulled into the richly developed story line and could hardly put this one down! I truly hope this author is sequestered as we speak, writing MORE!!! I am anxiously looking forward to the sequel which this book definitely deserves and hope she will be able to maintain the high standard she has set for herself with Worthy of a Master. Kudos to Chelsea Shephard and "look out" to Adrian Hunter!

Two Moons is a page turner! The characters are believable and endearing, the plot is fun and intriguing, and the sex scenes range from emotional to extremely hot. Planet Khyra has become my new dream destination! And the Khyrians are sooo sexy.
