I'm a veterinarian, very involved in behavior training, because that's what keeps my canine patients alive. I've found that if I can get clients involved in teaching a dog who has found out that learning is fun, that dog stands a much better chance of staying alive of becoming an indispensable member of their family. I've checked out numerous trick training books, and this is hands down the best. It's focused, breaks the tricks down into easy, understandable steps, and is written by someone who knows and loves dogs. Bravo!

Great for any dog

This is a very clearly written book that shows step by step how to make your dog impress people with how "smart" it is. The best thing about training your dog to do some of these tricks is that the basics sit, stand and stay also get transmitted. If you have a dog with behavior problems, once you start them out with this book everything else will follow. The book itself shows this with it's cross-reference at the end of each trick letting you know which tricks will be easy to teach in the future based on the foundation of just one trick!

This book would be great for puppies as well.

This is a really cool book!

I taught my field spaniel to shake, speak, rollover, beg, bow, crawl on her belly, climb ladders, open and close doors, etc. Also, using the techneques in the book, I made-up other tricks. Now she can slp-you-five and jump and twist in midair.

My Scottish Terrier, Sgt. Pepper, is currently working on the balance the milk-bone on your nose, and rollover trick.

At this point we're having so much fun gazing into one another's eyes over the milk bone, that we don't much care whether he learns it or not.

This is great fun!

One of the best books on teaching your dog tricks.

Finally a book which gives a complete overview of the many aspects of TTEAM work! I can imagine that it might be a bit overwhelming if you have never done any TTEAM, but if you have been to a course you will understand it very well. The book is very helpfull and suggests solutions to many problems.
The great thing is that Linda really thinks from the horse's point of view and is always looking why a horse does what he does and how you can work with him from there.

My horse trainer suggested I look for material by Linda Tellington - Jones on Ttouch as she uses some of her techniques and suggested it would be good to be consistent in handling. I picked it up and started to read and couldn't put it down. I read the first 40+ pages and completed it the next day. Moreover I started using the techniques the very next day on the horse and what a difference it makes. As a first time adopter of a five year old range born and range matured Mustang sometimes I feel I need a little help. Book is extremely helpful, diagrams are useful and exceptionally well done. 5 *s +

I felt like I was "missing" something with this book. It's not an easy topic to put in book form, I guess. If I had started with the video, I probably would've gotten it faster. I also wish she'd have picked easier names for some of the exercises. Call me clueless, but I'm not going to easily remember what the heck Lick of the Cow's Tongue is with a name like that. The main complaint I have about this book is the insistence on using stud chains. If you have a properly halter trained horse (or a really sensitive one), you should never need to use one. I have a wary Spanish Mustang rescue mare who'd charge into the next county if I even attempted to use a stud chain on her (and she's the one that I got this book for).

This book is by far one of the most comprehensive Tteam and Ttouch reference books. It shows you closeup pictures of how to do the Ttouch and how they are beneficial. The exercises are easy and anyone can do them. My horse was more attentive and trusting within just a few days of doing these excercises. I recommend using this book in conjunction with her video tapes. I sincerely recommend this book for anyone who wants to enhance their relationship with their horse and make it more of a partnership. It is fun for both of you.

An extremely useful reference book. I have used Tteam on lots of different horses and seen immediate and positive results. This book gives very clear directions and instructions.

Dan Millman pulls valuable concepts from a variety of disciplines. This book does not delve into specific training methods, but rather expounds a philosophy of training. The author integrates concepts from sports psychology, physiology, and the martial arts. The Inner Athlete contains several enlightening perspectives on different aspects of athletic training. I have been following his suggested modifications for stretching exercises for about two weeks, with excellent results. This book will be valuable for any athlete, regardless of level of attainment.

I never thought it could be that simple !!

What a great book...I am interested in all kinds of sports and have always believed that sport should be more than just physical training and with this book I found someone who shares my thoughts....

From the book: Dedicate your training to your life and not your life to your training...

When you read this book you will realize that the truth has always been in you, you just did not see it. Learn to see and let your heart lead the way. I love this book.

A must for the aspiring athlete regardless of your sport

I finished the book and instantly wanted to start reading it again. Dan has helped me with my own nemisis by reminding me that being stuck on a skill is a result of not having developed the requisite skills and strengths. But the concept that I love the most and has been that of building strength by relaxing the opposing muscles so you spend less time fighting yourself. As we all learn about life through sport (well, many of us anyway) I have discovered that it is not just in athletics that I tense all the wrong muscles. I have begun seeing how in my life I fight myself and by just relaxing the right areas of my life I have been able to handle much greater degrees of stress with a peace and equanimity this book helped me to realize.

This is one of those books I'll read over and over again and gain something new from each and every time. And my poor friends are all sick to death of having me quote it to them as they come to me with their struggles.

From clutz to world-class...

This book is an easy read, as are all of Dan Millman's books. I read the first edition of The Inner Athlete 6 years ago at the age of 20. It inspired me to enrol in a beginner's gymnastics class for adults, probably because I wanted to be just like Dan. It proved to be a life-changing decision. I had retained some of Dan's advice, such as the Law of Accommodation - how our body more readily produces results when we don't place demands or set goals. I stuck to practicing the fundamentals, and was satisfied with doing handstands and simple drills that I understood were the foundations of talent. Those who had started the class at the same time as I had began practicing handsprings after only a few weeks.

After a year, my classmates were still struggling with their handsprings. It didn't look like much fun, as they were sprawling on their butts half the time. Those who felt discouraged moved on to working on back-flips. In the meantime, I was getting better at handstands and my muscles were growing more supple. I would watch my classmates intently during practice. I paid close attention to the instructors who tried to help them, but I stayed on the sidelines and flirted with girls. When I wasn't doing that I stuck to my drills, stretching, and handstands, which I also incorporated into my morning exercise routine at home.

Then one day a guest instructor from Russia who was impressed with my ability to do handstands insisted that I do a handspring. I declined at first, but he insisted. Not wanting to be rude, I went through the motions for about 10 minutes with him. Finally, he sent me flying in a handspring that had me airborne for what seemed like an eternity. I was astonished and after a few tries I managed to do it without help. Within a week I was turning handsprings as well as the instructors. I was utterly amazed. My classmates were less enthused. Two of them quit shortly afterward. I bumped into one of them a few months later. She said she was "too busy" to come to practice. She had worked really hard, and I felt bad because I think my sudden improvement had discouraged her. Little did she know that my new-found ability was a natural result to having applied Dan's advice on Developing Talent.

I think anyone who applies the wisdom in Dan's book will develop wonderful results over time. Some people attribute such success to patience and persistence. That may be true, but that is to oversimplify. You need knowledge of how the process of skill-learning works and you need a good teacher. The Inner Athlete provides you with helpful keys that you can apply to almost any endeavour that involves skill training.

Thanks to the simple logic in this book, I have unlocked a world that had been closed to me for so long. I cherish the memories of the times when I moved like a total spaz. If only you had seen me at my first piano-lesson, my introduction to jazz-ballet or on my first day at swim school. I now enjoy a high level of skill in these areas, and to me the process seemed effortless.

With a back injury I incurred in an accident 2 years ago I am now confined to swimming, but that is no obstacle. The Inner Athlete deals beautifully with how to cope with setbacks. I work on the areas that I can, and have recently become a valued member of a swim team. So far, no medals, but the coach doesn't have to drag me out of the pool anymore.

I actually had the opportunity to watch this trainer work. In less than five minutes, she taught my retarded terrier mix the difference between a cup and a stick. The manual clearly outlines her technique and enables the lay person to reap the incredible rewards of actually communicating with his pet. I doubt that you will ever find this manual used, as no one will part with their copy.

Kayce Cover's manual is not a how to teach your dog to sit type book. It's about the full spectrum of life long interactions with an animal. From global life plans including changing abilities from infancy to aging animals, vet care, management, day to day events such as being quiet while waiting for food to perhaps rare events like being shipped on an airline, this book helps you create a plan for the things your animal is likely to encouter. What the animal will need to learn about during its lifetime with you and how you can teach this. It's about 2 way communication, the animal has a chance to say I'm not able to do this yet and there is a way to play a version of 20 questions so you can ask your animal do you want a drink of water, some food, a chance to play and more. The trainer can efficiently give feedback about how the animal's performance is improving and if it errs let it know immediately without upsetting the animal. Like the game of hot and cold, as the animal gets closer to the correct response, there is feedback to help it understand exactly what is wanted and if it starts to drift off, gets immediate feedback about where it goofed and when it is again doing it right.
This reduces confusion, which improves communication and trust.
Kayce has taken operant conditioning beyond its limits to operant communication. Animals are proving they can understand concepts such as color, states of emotion like calm, reliably identify various objects such as a cell phone or variety of flower, monkeys can be taught to use a video tape player and feed quadraplegics and more.
If you only get one book on training animals, make it this one.

I love that this method teaches animals in a manner that is kind and respectful. I volunteer at a local animal shelter and live in a home where the animals not only outnumber the humans 2-1 but are very much part of the family. This training method has provided me the tools to help shelter animals overcome many challenges, and at home, keeps our multi-specied family living in harmony. You will need the manual to understand what I am talking about, however, in short, the method uses sounds, body movements, etc. to teach a "language" to the animals. This "language" can then be used to teach anything from obedience commands to overcoming fears - the possibilities are limitless. I find it to be faster and more effective then methods I have used in the past and I also believe this means of communicating has enriched my life with my non-human family members.

I own this book, have read it numerous times. I have used this technique to reform my two run-away-no-more dogs. The author is funny, has outstanding credentials, and has crammed a lot of information into this book of about 100 pages. It does have typos and no pictures, and it is a soft cover with spiral binding, which has actually worked well for training. I have to say that this book has changed my life, and the way I look at animals, forever. It tells how to teach an animal how to target in less than a minute. It has a great glossary and the words are really well explained. It explains how to plan training sessions, how to start exotic animals (Cover started as a marine mammal trainer and it shows). It is not out of print, I got mine from the author's website.

This is an excellent manual for the beginning trainer. It is probably one of the only manuals that actually tells you how to train... step by step. It doesn't send you to other resources; this IS the resource! I am a new trainer and this book abled me to get a good grasp on how to start a training plan, what to expect with animals, and how to work my way around many distractions I may encounter. This is the only training manual you will ever need (except of course the other volumes to come). Contact the author to receive a copy; it is not out of print.

Island Of Excellence: 3 Powerful Strategies For Building Creative Organizations is a must read for any business executive or manager looking to gain a competitive edge to drive their organization to higher levels of performance. The author, Mark Bodnarczuk, combines the solitude of scuba diving the spectacular reefs of Papua New Guinea to explore the corporate and personal lives of nine characters attending a life altering dive workshop. This "Teaching Novel" has provided me insight on how to set free the creative thinking within our organization and allow individuals to find meaning and significance in their work. An eye-opening book that I highly recommend!

Using Fictional Characters relating to Jungian and Enneagram models, Mark Bodnarczuk, takes the reader on a journey exploring the inner self. In a unique approach to the "Corporate Book" Mark invites the reader to identify with one of the characters and discover their own internal conflicts that prevent them from fully experiencing their potential for excellence and success. Mark's book takes us a step beyond just identifying leadership traits and obstacles, to recognizing, understanding, and overcoming those obstacles to unleash our full potential. I am on my third read of Mark's book and discover new insights each time. His principles have helped me achieve greater success not only as a CEO, but also in my personal life.

This book was one of the best books I've read in recent memory. The writer, Mark Bodnarczuk, uniquely used fictional characters to make a very complex subject enjoyable to read and easy to retain. His insights into how personalities affect work performance and teamwork were especially helpful. I've applied his principles in my organization and found them to improve teammwork, employee morale and organizational productivity. I would recommend this book to anyone who desires an understanding of human personalities, how people's personalities impact teamwork and how understanding personalities improves business performance.

My daughter checked this book out of her school library and we both fell in love with it. I'm actually writing this review because I was hoping to buy Jake on Amazon (rather than "forget" to return it to the school library! :) The book is about the training of puppy Jake to be a hunting dog. You see how Jake fits into the established relationship between the owner and his older lab who is ready to "retire."

The prose is simple but not simplistic, and the process of seeing Jake grow up and fill a place in his owner's heart is touching without being maudlin. It's directed at children, and my daughter had no trouble reading it at 2nd grade, although it is longer than most books directed at early readers.

I think anyone who loves dogs would enjoy this book, but if you're a lab lover, this will quickly be a favorite.

As a long time behavior analyst, I have been gratified to see the field move along a path toward an interesting convergence with (the tags suggested for this review). The way behavior analysis moved from "mindless" to "mindful" is due to the rigorous language training that has always been part of the training. (Remember when you were "a very new to the field undergraduate", invited to the faculty party with the graduate students & professors; how careful you were not to say something that would suggest you were still blinded by cognitivism. The upperclass undergraduates were the most brutally observant of a "slip" of the tongue that could undercut your credibilty.) As obviously dysfunctional as this small part of the method was; the training in behavior analysis, honed a precision in language that created the precision of understanding that is the common background of "a behavior analyst". All this jabber to get to my point, will we create ACT therapists without the understanding to advance the field. (typed on the fly using my iPhone - so I hope this makes sense.)

If You Are Interested In Learning How To Do Act, This Is The Best Book Written To Date

Learning ACT, An Acceptance and Commitment Skills-Training Manual, written by three experts in this new and innovative type of therapy, Luoma, Hayes, and Walser, sets the standard for how psychotherapy books ought to be written. I have never read a book on how to do psychotherapy of any orientation that is as clear, comprehensive and helpful in teaching you how to do that particular brand of therapy. Learning Act is not a book that teaches you "about" ACT. It is a book that does exactly what the title tells you it does; it helps you learn to do ACT. It is a book for the clinician who is interested in experiential learning because it engages you and requires that you participate and practice the skills you have learned from it.

In a very methodical and systematic way, it breaks ACT down into its basic therapeutic processes and then proceeds to teach you how to do them. First you get some theory so you can understand the basic principles and concepts of the system. If you're not at all familiar with the behavior analytic terminology and concepts, you may strain a bit and may experience some puzzled moments, but as an ACT therapist might invite you to do, just go with it, allow yourself to feel some discomfort, and proceed with your intention to read this book. You will not regret it. You will be richly rewarded and you will have a good sense of its theoretical underpinnings. In fact, it may even stimulate your intellectual curiosity to do more reading and learn more about the theory itself, and the science that forms the strong foundation on which ACT rests. Next, it gives you descriptions of techniques, metaphors, stories. You get transcripts of actual therapist-client interactions and then, the best part of all, you get to play the part of the therapist. You are given clinical vignettes and are asked to respond to client comments and give a rationale for your responses. Finally, the authors offer two or three possible responses they themselves would make in those situations. So, you learn from reading, you practice by responding to clinical situations, and you get feedback by comparing your responses to those of the authors of the book. It is truly an experience working with this book. It's almost like going to a workshop to learn how to do ACT. It doesn't matter whether you are an experienced or inexperienced therapist. Novice clinicians are fortunate to have a book that takes them by the hand, tells them how to do it, and gives them an opportunity to practice what they've learned by responding in an ACT-consistent way to client comments made in an in-session clinical situation. Experienced clinicians who have never done ACT are fortunate to have a guide to help them navigate through the battle between ACT-consistent therapeutic behavior and the old and well-rehearsed responses and competing habits they learned from other therapeutic modalities that they may have been practicing for some time.

In the last few years, several excellent books have been written about ACT, all specializing in various topics such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, chronic pain, etc. And of course there is the first one written in 1999, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, the "bible" in the field. It was written by the founder and main force behind this new and innovative therapy, Steve Hayes, in collaboration with two other psychologists, Kirk Strosahl and Kelly Wilson, themselves very well known leaders, innovators and excellent practitioners of ACT. The Learning ACT book serves as a fine companion to the other more specialized books because it was written for the sole purpose of building basic skills in therapists who want to practice ACT.

In recent years several good books have been published on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), written from different angles and with different clinical populations in focus. This one, by three experts on the topic, is more than just another one. This is a tool for practice. The basic principles of ACT are presented and how to apply them in therapy is illustrated. I especially like the transcripts of therapy sessions and how they are used for practical excercises for the reader. "How would you respond, given this communication from a client?" Different suggestions are discussed from an ACT perspective.
This is a book primarely for the reader who have some knowledge of ACT and some experience of trying to implement it in her/his own work, and who wants to improve what the authors call the core competencies of ACT. There is much in this volume to take to heart, even for the experienced therapist.

This book is a great addition to the original ACT text (Hayes, Strosahl & Wilson) - it helps bridge theory to practice in the comfort of your own home. The breakdown of the chapters and the accompanying CD allow you to consider theory and then to actually see what it looks like live. I also loved the clips that showed a mixture of interventions & help discriminate between ACT consistent and inconsistent or mixed interventions.

There is simply no substitute for "actually seeing" what it is like when various points of the model are applied. It brings a small piece of experiential training into your home and available at your beck & call. An invaluable resource for clinicians and students alike.

Folks, I just have to rave about the newly released 'Learning ACT' by Jay Luoma, Steve Hayes, & Robyn Walser. It is brilliant! It makes ACT much more accessible and easier to understand, and that's an understatement. This book is an incredibly comprehensive and clear guide to using ACT - goes through each process bit by bit - breaks it up, explains it, gives examples, then gives you exercises to do to see how well you understand it and can apply it, and then gives you the answers so you can see how well you did. Wow! Wish this had been around a few years ago - would have saved me a lot of brain-ache. Essentila reading for anyone interested in practising ACT.

Cheers, Russ

I feel like can not speak highly enough about this book and I'm really sorry about! It is one of the best books on how to connect learning with business performance I ever seen.

Starts explaining how to conect learning objectives with business' performance objectives. Explains how to develope learning objectives, design learning measures, check measures reliability and validity. Makes a clear, nice and easy to understand transition to how to analyze learning data, presenting several techniques to collect and process data. Designs job performance measures, and explains how to collect and analyze it. The whole book contains detailed examples, and from the beginning to the end are presented three case studies: 1. technical training program, 2. sales/customer service training program, 3. leadership development program. In each chapter, after presenting new concepts, the three case studies are developed based on the new concepts introduced.

This book is not only for HR specialists.

A project manager have a lot of useful information and tools to include in every project and ideas on how to make her/his projects more succesful by connecting them with implementing the new skills. This can create projects' sustainability and synergies inside the organization.

A manager will have a better idea on how the big picture looks like, what have to plan, implement, manage and improve in order to be sure all business actions are aligned with business objectives.

Any reader should have a better understaning on how to maximize resources impact by being focused on implementing the new aquired skills, and not only on acquring new skills.

A must have "how to" book for HRD practitioners

Linking learning and performance is filled with the kind of rigor that all of us Hodges-junkies have come to expect and look forward to. What Hodges maps out is not easy. It requires soul searching and a lot of work. But standing up in front of a CFO with a bullet-proof case for corporate learning makes it all worthwhile.

Sideroad Health columnist Shara Rendell-Smock
certainly has a way with words!
Though I thought her column was informative, I
was really intrigued to learn she had written
a book about tiger training.
I couldn't resist buying it. . .and I'm glad I did!
It's a really fascinating behind-the-scenes book
about a topic most of us don't ever think about
- how the heck DO they train those animals?
(Though that's not the only topic they cover!)
The insight into trainer David Tetzlaff is subtle but powerful
. Definitely one of the most intriguing non-fiction books I've ever read.

Anyone know if she's going to do a book on Health next???

by Mike Cecere [big cat and elephant trainer, asst. manager, Double M Ranch, Hastings NY]

This is the cat book of the '90s! Sharon Rendell has done an incredible job of putting together the exciting story of the Tetzlaffs. She's chronicled the legend of Col. Lawrence "Jungle Larry" Tetzlaff, his wife Nancy "Safari Jane" Tetlaff and their son David Tetzlaff, who many believe to be the top wild animal trainer in the U.S. today.

Not many others have been able to take the nuts and bolts of animal training and make it a story people would want to read. Or adequately describe the years of devotion this family has given to the education through entertainment with wild animals.

Sharon Rendell also takes great pains to interview the leading trainers and zoologists of today to get the real story of what the animal business is all about.

This book is a must for all collectors and circus fans, as well as animal people. Especially important for anyone who is doing battle with the Anti's as this book will give you the facts.

Once you pick it up, you won't stop til you've read it all the way through. A book you'll read again and again. Good job, Sharon!

The price is a mere $11.95 -- a deal at twice the price.

Take it from me, it's a good read!

Now I can hardly wait for the movie version!

This is a Great Book!
