The great thing is that Linda really thinks from the horse's point of view and is always looking why a horse does what he does and how you can work with him from there.

From the book: Dedicate your training to your life and not your life to your training...
When you read this book you will realize that the truth has always been in you, you just did not see it. Learn to see and let your heart lead the way. I love this book.
A must for the aspiring athlete regardless of your sportReview Date: 1998-07-07
This is one of those books I'll read over and over again and gain something new from each and every time. And my poor friends are all sick to death of having me quote it to them as they come to me with their struggles.
From clutz to world-class...Review Date: 1998-03-22
After a year, my classmates were still struggling with their handsprings. It didn't look like much fun, as they were sprawling on their butts half the time. Those who felt discouraged moved on to working on back-flips. In the meantime, I was getting better at handstands and my muscles were growing more supple. I would watch my classmates intently during practice. I paid close attention to the instructors who tried to help them, but I stayed on the sidelines and flirted with girls. When I wasn't doing that I stuck to my drills, stretching, and handstands, which I also incorporated into my morning exercise routine at home.
Then one day a guest instructor from Russia who was impressed with my ability to do handstands insisted that I do a handspring. I declined at first, but he insisted. Not wanting to be rude, I went through the motions for about 10 minutes with him. Finally, he sent me flying in a handspring that had me airborne for what seemed like an eternity. I was astonished and after a few tries I managed to do it without help. Within a week I was turning handsprings as well as the instructors. I was utterly amazed. My classmates were less enthused. Two of them quit shortly afterward. I bumped into one of them a few months later. She said she was "too busy" to come to practice. She had worked really hard, and I felt bad because I think my sudden improvement had discouraged her. Little did she know that my new-found ability was a natural result to having applied Dan's advice on Developing Talent.
I think anyone who applies the wisdom in Dan's book will develop wonderful results over time. Some people attribute such success to patience and persistence. That may be true, but that is to oversimplify. You need knowledge of how the process of skill-learning works and you need a good teacher. The Inner Athlete provides you with helpful keys that you can apply to almost any endeavour that involves skill training.
Thanks to the simple logic in this book, I have unlocked a world that had been closed to me for so long. I cherish the memories of the times when I moved like a total spaz. If only you had seen me at my first piano-lesson, my introduction to jazz-ballet or on my first day at swim school. I now enjoy a high level of skill in these areas, and to me the process seemed effortless.
With a back injury I incurred in an accident 2 years ago I am now confined to swimming, but that is no obstacle. The Inner Athlete deals beautifully with how to cope with setbacks. I work on the areas that I can, and have recently become a valued member of a swim team. So far, no medals, but the coach doesn't have to drag me out of the pool anymore.

This reduces confusion, which improves communication and trust.
Kayce has taken operant conditioning beyond its limits to operant communication. Animals are proving they can understand concepts such as color, states of emotion like calm, reliably identify various objects such as a cell phone or variety of flower, monkeys can be taught to use a video tape player and feed quadraplegics and more.
If you only get one book on training animals, make it this one.

A good book for all agesReview Date: 2008-03-13
The prose is simple but not simplistic, and the process of seeing Jake grow up and fill a place in his owner's heart is touching without being maudlin. It's directed at children, and my daughter had no trouble reading it at 2nd grade, although it is longer than most books directed at early readers.
I think anyone who loves dogs would enjoy this book, but if you're a lab lover, this will quickly be a favorite.

If You Are Interested In Learning How To Do Act, This Is The Best Book Written To DateReview Date: 2007-12-16
Learning ACT, An Acceptance and Commitment Skills-Training Manual, written by three experts in this new and innovative type of therapy, Luoma, Hayes, and Walser, sets the standard for how psychotherapy books ought to be written. I have never read a book on how to do psychotherapy of any orientation that is as clear, comprehensive and helpful in teaching you how to do that particular brand of therapy. Learning Act is not a book that teaches you "about" ACT. It is a book that does exactly what the title tells you it does; it helps you learn to do ACT. It is a book for the clinician who is interested in experiential learning because it engages you and requires that you participate and practice the skills you have learned from it.
In a very methodical and systematic way, it breaks ACT down into its basic therapeutic processes and then proceeds to teach you how to do them. First you get some theory so you can understand the basic principles and concepts of the system. If you're not at all familiar with the behavior analytic terminology and concepts, you may strain a bit and may experience some puzzled moments, but as an ACT therapist might invite you to do, just go with it, allow yourself to feel some discomfort, and proceed with your intention to read this book. You will not regret it. You will be richly rewarded and you will have a good sense of its theoretical underpinnings. In fact, it may even stimulate your intellectual curiosity to do more reading and learn more about the theory itself, and the science that forms the strong foundation on which ACT rests. Next, it gives you descriptions of techniques, metaphors, stories. You get transcripts of actual therapist-client interactions and then, the best part of all, you get to play the part of the therapist. You are given clinical vignettes and are asked to respond to client comments and give a rationale for your responses. Finally, the authors offer two or three possible responses they themselves would make in those situations. So, you learn from reading, you practice by responding to clinical situations, and you get feedback by comparing your responses to those of the authors of the book. It is truly an experience working with this book. It's almost like going to a workshop to learn how to do ACT. It doesn't matter whether you are an experienced or inexperienced therapist. Novice clinicians are fortunate to have a book that takes them by the hand, tells them how to do it, and gives them an opportunity to practice what they've learned by responding in an ACT-consistent way to client comments made in an in-session clinical situation. Experienced clinicians who have never done ACT are fortunate to have a guide to help them navigate through the battle between ACT-consistent therapeutic behavior and the old and well-rehearsed responses and competing habits they learned from other therapeutic modalities that they may have been practicing for some time.
In the last few years, several excellent books have been written about ACT, all specializing in various topics such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, chronic pain, etc. And of course there is the first one written in 1999, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, the "bible" in the field. It was written by the founder and main force behind this new and innovative therapy, Steve Hayes, in collaboration with two other psychologists, Kirk Strosahl and Kelly Wilson, themselves very well known leaders, innovators and excellent practitioners of ACT. The Learning ACT book serves as a fine companion to the other more specialized books because it was written for the sole purpose of building basic skills in therapists who want to practice ACT.
Excellent tool for practiceReview Date: 2008-03-13
This is a book primarely for the reader who have some knowledge of ACT and some experience of trying to implement it in her/his own work, and who wants to improve what the authors call the core competencies of ACT. There is much in this volume to take to heart, even for the experienced therapist.
we all talk "about" it - now you can see it for yourselfReview Date: 2008-01-26
There is simply no substitute for "actually seeing" what it is like when various points of the model are applied. It brings a small piece of experiential training into your home and available at your beck & call. An invaluable resource for clinicians and students alike.

An Interesting Read about an topic not often coveredReview Date: 1997-11-18
certainly has a way with words!
Though I thought her column was informative, I
was really intrigued to learn she had written
a book about tiger training.
I couldn't resist buying it. . .and I'm glad I did!
It's a really fascinating behind-the-scenes book
about a topic most of us don't ever think about
- how the heck DO they train those animals?
(Though that's not the only topic they cover!)
The insight into trainer David Tetzlaff is subtle but powerful
. Definitely one of the most intriguing non-fiction books I've ever read.
Anyone know if she's going to do a book on Health next???
"The Cat Book of the '90s," Circus Report, Jan. 95Review Date: 1997-01-10
by Mike Cecere [big cat and elephant trainer, asst. manager, Double M Ranch, Hastings NY]
This is the cat book of the '90s! Sharon Rendell has done an incredible job of putting together the exciting story of the Tetzlaffs. She's chronicled the legend of Col. Lawrence "Jungle Larry" Tetzlaff, his wife Nancy "Safari Jane" Tetlaff and their son David Tetzlaff, who many believe to be the top wild animal trainer in the U.S. today.
Not many others have been able to take the nuts and bolts of animal training and make it a story people would want to read. Or adequately describe the years of devotion this family has given to the education through entertainment with wild animals.
Sharon Rendell also takes great pains to interview the leading trainers and zoologists of today to get the real story of what the animal business is all about.
This book is a must for all collectors and circus fans, as well as animal people. Especially important for anyone who is doing battle with the Anti's as this book will give you the facts.
Once you pick it up, you won't stop til you've read it all the way through. A book you'll read again and again. Good job, Sharon!
The price is a mere $11.95 -- a deal at twice the price.
Take it from me, it's a good read!
Now I can hardly wait for the movie version!
