The Coach's Handbook: Exercises for Resolving Conflict In

Review Date: 2000-09-21
A very helpful guide to understanding negative conflict styles to include a summary chart on page 14 that describes conflict style, the results of that style on others, and the results of that style for self. I have used this summary chart over and over to help my coachees understand what is going on in a conflict situation and the part the coachee is playing in the situation. I have also used this information personally to identify what I am doing in a conflict situation and shift my own behavior more quickly. Chapter 3 includes descriptions of negative communication patterns to include polorizing, reacting, global terms, and distorting messages-again a further explanation of how people react in conflict. The format of this handbook is also another plus as each section includes life lessons or examples of the principles discussed, coaching applications, exercises, suggested actions for the week as a coach and as a coachee. Overall a very useful tool for anyone and extremely important for coaches.

As a trainer facilitator, finding a quality workbook to use for myself and with diverse participants is highly desirable. This workbook is loaded with excellent examples and easy to follow exercises. I liked the way the content is organized and progressively helped me to handle more complex situations of conflict. Handling conflict is not comfortable for everyone; however, this workbook helps people to quit blaming others and take more responsibility to handle conflict before it escalates. This is a "keeper" and I hope that whoever reads this review will put this in their toolkit immediately.

I am a first time coach and knew next to nothing about soccer. This book has been a great help with my under 7 team, most of whom haven't played before. It's focus on fun games based on ball control makes a lot of sense. The kids are really enjoying their training and the other parents are very happy with what we're doing. I also think there's a lot in this book for the experienced coach who hasn't worked with kids this young.

As a newly recruited soccer coach for a 6-7 year old group, I needed a book that was well organized and gave me the information I needed in a concise way. This book covers the basics from start of the practice season to the end of the game season. The book is short, easy to read and has great insight into the best way to teach this young group--get everyone involved and have fun while the players learn. There are a lot of good suggestions for drills that keep this age group entertained but still allows you to teach. It packs a lot of information into it's small size.

A must read for any new soccer coach

A brand new soccer coach facing six very wild and unruly 6 year-old boys hoping I could teach them the basics of the game of soccer. No easy task. A key concept here is that we need to give very young kids the chance to try new things out, develop their confidence and have fun so they keep coming back - and that this is far more important than winning. This book was a lifesaver my first year. It was rained on, stepped on and dragged in and out of the equipment bag many times during the season. But under all that muck and abuse are some very creative ideas to get the kids engaged while also teaching them basic skills like dribbling, passing and defending. Great book.

A good book for brief intro into pathophysiology, or as a review for those needing a quick review. Not too in depth, nor currently (2006) up to date, but gives a taste of what pathophysiologis about. Also ties in some of the molecular markers into the text. The best part however are the pictures ... a synopsis at a glimps.

As a writer and compensation consultant myself, I highly recommend this newly revised edition for HR and compensation professionals seeking a solid overview reference guide to all aspects of compensation. The book provides coverage of a wide variety of relevant topics written by highly-regarded professionals.

Mind you, there are more comprehensive treatments available for specialty or "single-topic" compensation areas, such as executive or sales compensation, but none that provide the overall breadth of The Compensation Handbook as resource guide on many key areas of compensation management.

I found this book to be an invaluable reference for my research in the area of compensation. It covers all of the main topics in compensation management with articles from the best minds in the field. The trend summary and chapter introductions provide an overview that is interesting and insightful. That kind of analysis is hard to find. The information is surprisingly up to date, since change is slow in this field.

The book is essential for compensation professionals.

As a compensation consultant, I sought a comprehensive guide for all aspects of the field. The 4th edition of The Compensation Handbook provides simple and direct answers for every compensation problem. It is a virtual "who's who" of compensation professionals providing well-constructed, concise information on their area of expertise. No matter what information I seek -- from base compensation, variable compensation, executive compensation, performance and compensation, compensation and corporate culture, or international compensation -- I can find pertinent, practical guidance in this one book. Compensation issues that are currently challenging every company - regardless of size, age, or industry -- are especially well developed in The Compensation Handbook. The section on Corporate Culture containing chapters on "Culture and Compensation" and "Connecting Compensation, Behaviors, Culture, and Strategy to Win" by William M. Mercer consultants, "Rewarding Scarce Talent" by Patricia Zingheim, "Gaining a Competitive Edge by Improving the Return on Human Capital" by Peter LeBlanc, and "The Role of Work-Life Benefits in the Total Pay Strategy" covers issues that every compensation practitioner or human resources professional will grapple with in the forseeable future. Even the effect of technology and computers on compensation administration are handled in The Compensation Handbook. Information on global compensation strategies is relevant not only to practitioners but to anyone seeking employment on foreign soil or working for a foreign company. The Compensation Handbook is a winner.

As a new Boxer owner I searched high and low, read many articles, called the ABC and searched for information. After all of that time spent I saw this book on my friends coffee table, (Another Boxer owner) and asked to barrow it... As a true friend he said, "no, you'll need one for yourself. And I still need mine!" I figured since he has raised Boxers for years it was a MUST HAVE. Well, after reading through the book once, I had to re-read it. There was just so much info about training, Teaching, and show prospecting, to only read it once.

A real MUST HAVE for any current Boxer owner, or prospective Boxer owner. I suggest reading this book before you buy your puppy!

P.S. After reading this book I chose a real show prospect... I'll write again when he is a Ch.

Review Date: 2001-02-24
If you want to know the truth about the potbellied pigs stop right now and purchase your very own copy of the book "The Complete Guide for the Care and Training of Pot Potbellied Pigs" by Kathleen Myers. The title to the book unquestionably describes its content. You may think pigs are not for me; or, I know all there is to know. You cannot be any further from the truth. Before reading this book I knew very little about the potbellied pig. After reading this short but comprehensive book I feel confident in selecting and raising a potbelly as a pet. The author takes the novice as well as the expert step by step through the practice of owning the potbellied pig. Did you know you can actually house-break a potbellied pig?

For those needing additional assistance understanding their pet the book answers those questions, as well. Kathleen Myers even lists all plants which are toxic to potbellied pigs. She includes a comprehensive resource list with phone numbers and web sites all potbellied pig owners need at their fingertips. Topics on the list include animal care, best feed for your pet, training videos, and numerous other online resources.

Whether you are a novice or enjoy potbellied pigs in your daily life, "The Complete Guide for the Care and Training of Potbellied Pigs" should be by your side. There is no other guide as complete as this one. It will be a constant reference resource for the Potbellied Pig pet owner.

Review Date: 2001-04-12
As the two-legged mom of 3 potbelly pigs, the oldest of which is now 10, I find this book a wonderful wealth of information that every care-giver of pet pigs should have on hand. Laid out in a very easy to use format, this book will take you from the history of where potbellied pigs came from; help you decide if a pet pig is right for your family (as they are not for just anyone); and then moves on into what to look for when choosing a pet pig; how be be prepared for it's homecoming and the proper living environment required for these special little pigs; the medical need-to-know information that is specific to pet pigs; along with various other chapters which will put you and your companion pig on the road to a happy, healthy and long relationship. Information on pet pigs and their care is sparse at best. This valuable text helps fill that void in the pet pig market and I promise you'll have many pages dog-earred or marked with post-its by the time you're done reading it. No pet pig home should be without The Complete Guide for the Care and Training of Pet Potbellied Pigs.

This book has all the major policies and considerations for an employee handbook. I appreciate its clear concise language. It points out the policy considerations in choosing between options. It is current. (Laws change enough each year that I wouldn't suggest anyone buy a legal text over 5 years old or even a couple of years old in some cases.) The CD is easy to use. I'm a lawyer and was curious about it so I bought it. I was pleased with its thoroughness. If you are in a unionized environment remember that you can't just implement many of the policies therein without negotiating with your union. It would, however, give you language to discuss and the pros and cons of the alternatives.

This is a complete kit for making your company's own employee handbook. There is legal information, state specific information, resources to follow for your specific needs, and then, the best part of all, there is CD that comes with this that has everything you need already typed for you. All you have to do is insert the CD and save the files, which are in MS Word, and voila - you have it. The only thing you have to do is decide which policies you want for your company, fill in a few blanks, change the TOC and you are ready to print it out! A very practical and easy way to create your own employee handbook! I was quite impressed.

One reviewer said that Darkling was "depressing." I did not find it so. Yes, it is dark, like many of Peyton's books. Compared with the popular series books of today, which are formulaic, predictable, and always have a happy ending, Peyton's books are far more realistic. Life isn't always perfect; things are not always easy. But that is not depressing--it is simply normal.

Peyton's books spoke to me as a child in a world that often seemed to be conspiring against me, and they speak to me still as an adult who knows that the world does not care enough to conspire! Like Jenny in Darkling, all our lives consist of difficulties to be overcome, risks to be run, and chances to be taken. I find Jenny's handling of those difficulties, risks, and chances to be uplifting, rather than the opposite.

Try it, and other K.M. Peyton books, such as Blind Beauty, Fly-by-Night and the Team, the Flambards series, and the new Small Gains (not yet available in the U.S., but try Amazon.com in the U.K.!).

Darkling is very very depressing. There is simply no other way of putting it. Every beautifully written line of it practically weeps with the sorrow and folly of all human relationships. The book is set in the modern day, and tells the tale of a young girl named Jenny, who lives in desperation and poverty, longing fruitlessly for the gorgeous boy next door and the success of her colt, Darkling in the racing world. Jenny is a sympathetic and very well rounded lead character. Her story is a fascinating one... but brace yourself for realism over sweetness.

This book offers tons of practical advice. It has step by step photos with captions that describe exactly how to train your dog. It is entertaining and useful, cleverly written so it can be enjoyed by the whole family, adults and children alike. We followed the instruction outlined in the book and by the time our dog got to training school she was the star of the class.
