This is a great book for the trainer who needs to create a quality rapid elearning product but doesn't have the time or budget for expensive tools. Ms. Bozarth really knows the program and she has some great tips on how to create compelling animations and engaging content. Team this up with the tools from Wondershare and you will be able to create some amazing elearning.

I pre-ordered Better Than Bullet Points because a preview of the contents seemed to fit my needs of creating engaging online courses. The book more than lived up to expectations; it is simply excellent in presenting its central thesis--"transform" your PowerPoint presentation, don't simply "transfer" it online and declare it a learning tool.

I have several well respected books on elearning, but their encyclopedic presentation is overwhelming. Jane's book is very well focused, flows topic to topic very naturally and logically, and most importantly, is substantive without dumbing down. And while she covers some PowerPoint techniques, the focus stays on pedagogy and field-tested design. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to get their first elearning program right the time. This is your user's manual.

Great book for practitioners!

This is a great book for people who have a knowledge of basic Powerpoint tools but want to take it to the next step in creating e-learning. It's easy-to-understand and follow and keeps driving home the point, "It's the design, not the software." People who may feel intimidated by e-learning design and development can use the tutorials and how-to's in the book to create quick, easy and effective e-learning modules. I received an advance copy and was able to use the principles in a graduate class I taught in the Fall. Students were amazed at what can be done with Powerpoint for e-learning purposes and were able to follow the step-by-step instructions. Their assignments reflected their ability to use the principles and guidance in the book, and I will be requiring the book for my upcoming graduate classes this Summer and Fall. The author is obviously knowledgeable, but more importantly, able to "speak" to readers less experienced. I recommend the book highly and also the resources on the author's website, [...].

Excellent for trainers in general not just for PowerPoint users.

I agree with everything the other reviewers have said to date. This well-written book (lots of active voice) is useful to anyone involved in training; chapter 2 takes Bloom's taxonomy to a very realtistc and pragmatic level that guides the reader to the most appropriate learning activities. I just finished a master program in distance education and I wish I had had this book in school. Bozarth's interpretations of Roger Mayer's principles of multimedia made more sense to me now than when I read Mayer's book in grad school. Not at all overly academic; very application-based on what most of us learned in school, but needed help in using the theories. Highly recommended.
Margaret Driscoll's "Web-Based Training: Designing e-Learning Experiences" with CD-ROM would make a great companion book to this one for anyone creating e-learning in a variety of delivery formats.

WHY did it take so long for someone to write this book? Bozarth, the author of "Elearning on a Shoestring", is back with her common-sense approach to creating great online learning. As she notes time and time again, no tool will take static content and magically transform it into engaging training: that will always require effort, creativity, and design skill. The examples of effective treatments will rock those who have been exposed only to bullet-based presentations, and there is an excellent passage, with examples, of transforming (not just converting) classroom programs to engaging elearning courses. While this isn't a 'how to use PowerPoint' book, the CD does include some tutorials (narrated by the author) for complex operations.

I have been to several workshops that promised to teach me to use PowerPoint for elearning, only to spend hours inserting clip art and making text fly. This book shows how to use it to create LEARNING.

Excellent! Would recommend it to anyone who is interested in a Bible that connects you so easily from one Scripture to the next under particular topics. Yet it is not a Topical Bible. I am a pastor and it is very useful in my ministry.

I just received this bible and upon review I have to say it is of very good quality. There is very, very little bleed through of other words on a page which is important because I have trouble reading bibles printed on thin paper. I find bleed through highly distracting. The pages are very easy to turn because of the thicker paper.

Also the type size is very good, I usually read larger print, but this one is very acceptable because the verses are well spread out with meaing there is more space between each sentence, in other words, the verses aren't all smashed together like some bibles I've owned and sold. This also makes for less eye strain and faster reading.

I've owned and do own many bibles, and will have to say that Billy Graham's notes are to the point and easy to understand which can be highly appreciated if you are somewhat confused about some bibles lengthy discussions on theology. It's to the point Christianity in a nutshell!

Another good point about this bible is that the concordance is substantial. On the downside, this bible could have had references in it, that would have made it awesome. But I give it 5 points anyway because I'm so impressed with the thicker paper, minimal bleed through, large concordance and the short and to the point reference material by Billy Graham.

I own the NAS, NIV, NASB, AMP, NLT, GNT, ESV and the KJV and I purchased this one last because of all the bad reports I have heard about it being a poor translation. I have done research on the background of the manuscripts they have chosen, both good and bad research, and am still eager to read it as my sample readings have been very enjoyable. I used to be bent on just picking one translation, the best one, but in many years of studying them all and researching the critics, I have found that none of them is perfect. So I have decided to use several of them to get a grasp on God's word more clearly when I sit for serious study. Since doing so, I have really been blessed. God does protect his word despite man's attempts to develop the "best" translation. Good luck and God Bless.

Great training for the owner, as well as, the pet bird. Well thought out and presented. Easy to follow, well paced approaches to basic training and a wake-up call for those of us who's been around birds all our lives. Ann Castro breaks down birds' psychological behaviors and shows you great ways to work with them so that you and your bird are both happy! I've owned pet birds for over 40 years and was amazed at the answers I got from this book. Thanks Ann, a book long over due!

Whether you're interested in getting into clicker training or an experienced trainer, I highly recommend this book. It explains the basics clearly and concisely, and presents many very useful behaviors with step-by-step training plans for how to teach them to your birds. Ann Castro works with a wide range of parrots, from tiny budgies and parrotlets to African greys and the largest macaws. The behaviors outlined in the book are not tricks or gimmicks (although those can be fun to teach as well); instead, Castro focuses on truly useful behaviors like stepping up and "drop it." She also discusses how to deal with problem behaviors in a gentle and effective way.

If you're only going to buy one book on clicker training parrots, make it this one!

I've really enjoyed using clicker training as a means to interact with my birds. It's simple, easy, and fun. The birds are suprisingly VERY into it. If I have both of my parrotlets out at the same time they will compete to see who can get to the clicker stick first, knowing that a treat is about to follow. I highly recomend this book and training method to any bird owner, regardless of type of bird, level of training, or age.

I have seen clicker training with dogs, monkeys and even rabbits. But I was skeptical that a small bird could actually be trained. I was wrong! My two budgies are completely different in personality, and clicker training works for both. Schnappi caught on very fast. She learnt to follow the target stick right away und does tricks now, like riding her own little skateboard.
My second bird Snoopy spent time outside before I got her and is afraid of her own shadow. With clicker training she started enjoying life again. She learnt fast what the "click" means and has fewer panic attacks. Soon, she'll be ready for the target stick. Now I can actually "do something" with my birds rather than just talk to them.

The step-by-step instructions in "The Bird School" by Ann Castro are very easy to follow, and the pictures are worth "a thousand words." To my surprise the book came with a clicker and a target stick!

But reading the book also brought back sad memories. Years ago, I had a friend who always showed up with bite marks on her arms, inflicted by her own parrot. I found the explanation in the "Bird School": The bird was lonely and bored. The punishment for biting (screaming and yelling) was his reward, and that's why it never stopped. I wish a book like this had been available then!

Clicker training is a fun activity for budgies and other small birds. For parrots, clicker training is even more important to socialize them and make life enjoyable for birds and owners alike.

A Must Read for all Bird owners!!

This book is a must read for all bird owners; of any kind. It is very informative and beautifully written. It will guide anyone to the clicker way of training. I suggest it for anyone with parrots. After my first session with my bird it was working great! At last, something to read, something to do for your bird/parrot that really works.

This book is not simply an translation of Atisha's simple yet profound sutras, it is a treasure trove of wisdom from the mouth of the master. So profound,it opened my eyes to things I wanted to know, already knew, and didnt particulary care to know--they are all the same. Osho can really open your head and heart, show you REALLY how everything is ONE. If you let his teachings in. His words will give you joy, A-HA's, disapointments, courage, sadness, fearlessness and how to deal with fear--which is all centrally linked to the ONE fear--the fear of dying. Dont be scared of Osho, he would have loved it if you were though! What a powerhouse of infinite wisdom and philosophy! I love the man who was never born and never died. Osho--In my heart forever. BOOK OF WISDOM - BY OSHO
Discourses on Mind Training. This one whispers the Truth. Wisdom you find in words but Truth is in the gaps between the words, in the spaces between the lines. It is a silent, unspoken whisper. Between the lines read, 'Existence loves you' It comes like a fragrance from every page. Osho says it takes courage to find the truth. People are not ready to up their dreams and their dreaming. They are not ready to drop the mind and move into the immediate. Only few people have dared to discover truth...It is risky; it may shatter all that you have known before and you will have to rearrange your whole life. It is dangerous. It may destroy all your illusions, it may shatter dreams. Only Silence communicates the truth as it is. We have God's words and his silence. This book was the most facinating book on training a horse I have ever read. Once you understand the process; put it to work; you will be amazed at how easy it is to train by this method. Uses all leg aids, body shifting, no pressure on mouth, no kicking or tugging. I have used it on a number of horses with great results. Horses learn with no stress. Be sure they know what you are asking of them before you go on to next levels. Wonderful basic training for either western or english riding - using snaffle or curb bit. It's the body language that works with horse and rider, not the equipment. I swear by Mr. Williamson's methods. Would work real well with Monty Roberts gentle approach to communicating with the horses' natural senses.

As a former Air Force Weapons Crew Chief and a 25 year businessman, I thought Business Is Combat was not only an informative and exciting read but one that is absolutely accurate in its analogies, lessons and promise of success. The fighter jock is cool, calm and collected not just because he is who he is but because he is confident in his abilitiy to do what he does. This can only come from preparation, repetition and more repetition. As Jim Murphy points alludes, to loose focus for an instant can be the difference between returning home safely or trying out the handle on the ejection seat.

The stakes are just as important in business (perhaps more so since a leader is also responsible for the people under his charge). Attention to detail and flawless execution has no substitute. I believe this book is a great read and a reference for winning teams

I purchased James Murphy's book in 2000, we just completed our financials and I am pleased to report that we doubled our revenues. We contribute this increase to a single statement we found in the book, Business is Combat. "All of our resources in the Air Force are alligned like a shaft of a spear, pushing the "pointy end forward". We did that in our business and the results were dramatic. We have become great planners, we execute efficently and we now debrief, all of this we learned from Mr. Murphy's book. I keep it on my desk and refer to it often because it makes us money.

Review Date: 2000-08-07
Many business books are long on theory, but short on providing any insight about actually executing. And face it, theories come and go, but getting things done is never out of style.

James Murphy has written a book about getting things done. His style is informal and accessible ... he writes as if he's sitting across the table talking to you. And he remains focused on his message: the planning, execution and debriefing required to build a successful business or organization.

Getting into this book requires the reader to accept that the skills taught to fighter pilots apply to business. The amazing thing is that they actually do. I've not received this training, but I have been in business for a long time. And the information imparted in this book can help anyone run a business better. From handling 'task saturation' to staying focused, this book provides useful insights in an entertaining way.

If you're looking for a book on the latest theory on business, skip "Business is Combat." If you want to pick up some ideas you can start using immediately to get things done, I highly recommend it.

I would have to rank Championship Techniques right up there with Judo Unleashed which is a terrific book.

Finally: THE Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Book!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-02
What I have been wanting is a book that treats the full sport of gi BJJ. While BJJ is such a complex game that you can never really encompass all of it in a book, you certainly can select the most important movements and cover all of them in detail. This is what this book does: it has 83 fighting moves and 12 solo drills, covering everything you really need to know. Because of decades of experience under BJJ rules, which were devised in the 1970s, and an acceleration of skill very recently due to Jiu-jitsu's popularity soaring exponentially, the techniques found critical for competition nowadays are not quite those classic movements relied upon twenty or thirty years ago. The pivotal moves in today's world are quite fascinating and often counterintuitive and complex. Since overly simplistic movements are often easily stopped with simple defences, the moves that tend to be effective in high level fighting today are those that are less predictable in their development, are easily altered in the middle, and involve changing the angles of pressure on your opponent through a series of shifts and grip changes.
The single-minded sport focus of the book is very reassuring for any buyer looking for a full treatment of the sport of Jiu-jitsu, as I was. Also it is wonderful that the book does not deal with MMA or no-gi submission wrestling. It is very focussed on what it treats, and it treats it as fully as any book could ever be expected to.
This is a masterpiece of a book and I think it could serve as an excellent model for books treating any other combat sports.

Championship Grappling is essentially the prequel to Jean Jacques Machado's other book "Black Belt Techniques", and provides a solid basis of jiu jitsu movements, techniques, combinations and concepts.

As usual, Kid Peligro lays out a series of techniques with excellent easy-to-understand pictures and explanations.

This book is geared towards teaching the basics, but even advanced level jiu jitsu students will find many concepts, techniques and combinations to explore on the mats.

A milestone book on LD children
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-14
This old book was first published in 1950 by Pearl Buck (1892-1973), a 1938 Nobel laureate, but originally drafted by her in the much earlier days. Her first daughter Carol was born as a LD child in 1920, due to a delivery accident in a remote village of China. The cause is now known as PKU, a disorder in phenylalanine metablism (and PKU can be fully cured now), but then nobody knew either cause or therapy. That was a beginning of this tragedy of both Carol and her mother Pearl. But that is not the whole story. Pearl's first husband, a scholar, kept ignoring his own LD child, and did not give any special finacial support to this daughter. So when Pearl, then just a house wife, realized that Carol had to be taken care of by the best special school for LD children in the United States for the rest of her own long life (till Carol's death in 1992), she started writing a novel on Chinese farmers, The Good Earth, hoping to earn some money as royality for the sake of Carol's life-long welfare. In 1932, to her great surprise, this book becames the world best seller, and even filmed in 1937 with a great success, and eventually awarded her the big prize the followig year. In other words, this LD child Carol transformed her mother's life and career so dramatically, in a better sense.

Having met so many other mothers who also have LD children, eventually after the end of WW II, Pearl decided to publish her true story on Carol, which turned out to be her first and sole real daughter, in order to share her own difficult experience with these mothers. Meanwhile she adopted several orphan children including Janice Walsh with her second husband Richard Walsh, a talented editor who published "The Good Earth" very successfully.

In the early days of Carol's youth, Pearl had a great difficulty in being willing to admit that Carol's brain had been permanentally damaged. One day, however, at a small hospital in the United States, an old German doctor privately approached her and explained, though in his broken English, to convince her that her daughter would never grow further. To me, that particular scene was the most moving and unforgettable in this book. For I am a retired molecular oncologist who has been trying to develop, particular during my stay in Germany, the first effective therapeutics for a genetic disease called NF1 (neurofibromatosis type 1) which causes not only tumors but also frequently LD in many young children.

I cherish this book. I am the mother of a wonderful little boy with special needs who is also terminal. I could never put into words all my thoughts and feelings. Ms. Buck did that beautifully and with heart. I reread it often and share it with other parents needing the encouragement that she bestows with her wonderful writing. Thank you!

It was fascinating to read the account from such an "open-minded" individual as Pearl Buck as having had such difficulty dealing with/ accepting her disabled daughter. Although she clearly loved her daughter she hid her from the rest of her family and the rest of the world almost until the end of her life. Ms Buck was an advocate for the disabled but could not deal with society's prejudices with regard to her own child.

A moving family story

"The Child Who Never Grew," by Pearl S. Buck, is the true story of the struggle of the author after learning that her daughter Carol, born in 1920, was mentally handicapped. The 1992 Woodbine House edition contains a foreword by James Michener, an introduction by Martha M. Jablow, and an afterword by Janice C. Walsh, who was Pearl's daughter and Carol's's sister.

Jablow notes in her intro that "Child" first appeared as an article in "Ladies Home Journal" in 1950 and was shortly thereafter published in book form. Jablow notes that the book is "a landmark in the literature about disabilities." As such, I consider "Child" a fitting companion text to a book like Helen Keller's "The Story of My Life." Jablow notes that mental retardation "carried a shameful stigma" when Buck first had this story published; Jablow provides further useful historical context for the main text.

Buck writes very movingly of her heartache at the discovery of her child's plight. She documents her awareness of the stigma against people like Carol, and also tells of her search for an institution where Carol's special needs might be met. Buck passionately defends the humanity and worth of the mentally retarded, and tells what her experiences with Carol taught her: "I learned respect and reverence for every human mind. It was my child who taught me to understand so clearly that all people are equal in their humanity and that all have the same human rights."

Walsh's afterword continues the story of Carol. She fills in some of the very obvious gaps in Buck's story. Walsh's contribution to this book is very moving, and includes photos of Carol.

In addition to being a work of historical and sociological importance, I found "The Child Who Never Grew" to be a moving and very personal piece of American literature. For another good companion text, try William Styron's "Darkness Visible," in which the distinguished writer tells of his battle against clinical depression. Also, try "On the Way Home," by Laura Ingalls Wilder; this book has additional material by Laura's daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, and like "The Child Who Never Grew" is thus a sort of mother-daughter literary collaboration.

Worth reading.

A very moving book. The book was written 50 years ago, and it sounds as current as if it had been written today. A mother's feelings are timeless.

Emily Cowen is one of the most refreshingly unique charactors to come along in years. This book is exciting, witty and prophetic in its analysis of terrorism, worthy of film or TV adaptation. I would highly recommend this book to any and all who want to read some excellent writing, and get a very realistic glimps of the ever changing world we now live in. It's a must read!!

While wearing the guise of a well paced spy thriller, "Circle Around the Sun" delivers a fascinating social and political history of our current terrorist dilemma, as seen through the eyes of a mature, modern, multicultural woman and her extended family. Perhaps the most unique aspect of the book for me was the carefully crafted picture of Middle Eastern/Muslim culture and its interactions and conflicts with the west. The emotional depth and detail given on the subject is not usually available in modern fiction, and is certainly more compelling than any documentary I have seen since 9-11.

The book spans the era from circa 1968 to the present, which makes it a must read for any baby boomers like myself that are still paying attention to the world around them. With another book in this series ("The Isis Project") apparently on the way, we can look forward to a continuing education and another fun read.

Circle Around the Sun is a fast paced adventure that takes place in England, Germany, the Middle East and the USA. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this book is that the hero is not a typical James Bond / Jack Ryan character but rather Emily Cowen, a woman whose heritage and experience places her in the center of Middle Eastern conflict. Ms. Cowen is a fascinating character who does not always make the safest choices in life, but manages to face the outcome of her decisions and the events that shape her life with courage and intelligence. Ms. Johnson brings an incredible sense of realism to the story, but manages to do so without distracting from the intensity and pace of the action. Highly recommended.

I have been searching for a book like this for quite some time. It includes all the elements I have been wanting to include in my teaching of clinical psychology to post-graduate students. It has proven to be a very valuable find!

This book is comprehensive, easy to read, and based on a sound theoretical and evidentiary base. It is hard to find a text that assists clinicians to bridge the gap between meeting the client and implementing a suitable intervention. This book not only does this, but does so in a way that is respectful of the client, the clinician, and the diversity of excellent clincial formulation frameworks available.

Dr. Ingram's book is an essential part of each therapist's library. It is the complete guide to case formulations and conceptualizations. Dr. Ingram has an amazing way of presenting her clinical hypotheses and how they are incorporated in therapy, and in turn the role they play in creating therautic goals and interventions. It is a must-read!!

Without question this is the essential "psychological encyclopedia from A - Z" to have on your bookshelf. Dr. Ingram provides useful and effective tools for any therapist; no matter the orientation, client population or years in the field. As a recently graduated MFT Intern, I continuously refer to Dr. Ingram's Problem Oriented Method. Each and every chapter is full of helpful and expansive information and the Core Clinical Hypotheses target all relevant issues with which clients present. This makes a great gift for your therapist friend. I have and will continue to highly recommend Clinical Case Formulations to all of my colleagues.
