found that the exercise program in Jeff's book has renewed confidence
within me.  His inspiring story helped give me hope when I was very low
and filled with depression.  In time I began to feel my sad spirits
lift.  With Jeff's system I was able to find an outlet for my poor
emotional states.  My energy picked up, my self image improved, and my
overall quality of life was enhanced.  I recommend his book to all my
friends.
Thanks for writing Breakthrough! An Exercise in Serenity

I've used weight training for a number of years to help me climb out of the dark abyss of depression. It has been much more effective for me than medication which I finally gave up on. I am very excited that someone has finally written a book that dispenses with the meat-headed "no pain no gain" attitudes and presents a sensible, simple plan focusing on consistent, gentle strength training. This book fills a huge gap.

Jeff Rutstein's personal story of using exercise to break the cycle of addiction is very inspiring, and he shares his hard-won wisdom in this clear, easy-to-follow book. His emphasis on "mindful movement" to reduce stress and feel better is a refreshing and welcome change from many exercise books that focus solely on appearance.

After reading "Breakthrough", I now have a different take on Exercise. Historically, my motto has been "no pain, no gain" which got me no place fast. I know now that having a connection between mind and body is the only way to live in serenity. This book has showed me that exercise is a lifestyle involving both mind and body. I will use this tool daily and encourage others to do so as well. Finally I'm able to breathe and exercise!

My judge uses all kinds of crazy words, things that people don't usually hear in everyday courtroom proceedings...yet I have found most of them in this book! In my efforts to reduce my overall strokes and improve my realtime, this book has been my sidekick. Not a day goes by that I don't look for some help between its covers. It's awesome!

This book is great!! I am a court reporting student. I wish I had bought this book when I first started school. It would have saved me much time. There are several options for the words, and even if they are not your theory, it can give you an idea of how to brief the word according to your own theory. I use this book almost daily in practice, and my speed has increased 40 WPM in two months. I credit it all to being able to find a brief and save strokes. BUY IT!!!

Great referece book for any court reporter....

WOW, WOW, WOW!!! I think this book should be required reading for EVERY court reporter. I've been reporting 21 years, have all my certifications, but I'd have to say I feel like I have just now "turned the corner" after incorporating some of these briefs!

Curious? How about MOINGS for "among other things," AEFM for "African-American," and my favorite, the 40+ pages of "is" phrases including STHR-LGS for "Is there anything else."

You'll want to make space in your carrying case so you always have this reference with you!

This beautiful book should be required reading for every business student, politician, and employer in the U.S. It wouldn't hurt parents a bit to read it and work it as well. We all have occasions in our lives to exert power over someone else, and too often we act out of emotions that end up causing trouble for us, problems we never saw ahead. Chagdud Tulku's Socratic method opens our hearts as it quiets our minds. Glimpses and examples of compassionate resolutions to conflict are inspiring. I plan on giving this book to Mark Greif, a high school principal in Oregon who annually alienates students and staff at his school with his bullying, paranoid management style. The beauty of the Tulku's message is that even the karmic damage someone like Greif self-inflicts is reversible through compassion and greater awareness. Chagdud Tulku writes with a poet's insight, a spiritual mentor's heart.

When all the huffing and puffing won't make your life the way you would like for it to be, read Change of Heart. It will shake up your thinking about the world and those in it. Change of Heart is an outstanding book consoling readers with knowledge, instruction and inspiration for living a radiant meaningful life. The reader, looking in the rearview mirror of their past, will be able to determine how the unplowed ground of the future will be. Change of Heart is broken down into three parts along with a list of meditations.

The compiled teachings takes you on a voyage of discovering areas of yourself you had never been keenly aware of before as you stride toward spiritual freedom. The book outlines a course of instruction called Bodhisattva Peace Training, which is friendly to all faiths. The reader will find help for troubled relationships, family, workplace, community, and/or world problems and situations. Bodhisattva Peace Training "is meant to serve as a mirror with which to examine ourselves". It explains how fear, self-interest and impulse toward self-preservation attracts negative energy. The book continues on to outline and teach you how to make "good heart" the foundation of all your commitments.

Statements like "awakening good heart is like finding a precious gem in a mound of filth" and "commitment to free all beings from suffering" are simply teasers for the mound of philosophical information to be had by reading this book.

The shared conversations with Rinpoche are unforgettable and chronicles the questions about life and soul proving the more crowded life gets the more insulated people make themselves which leads to a life of boundaries rather than freedoms. As the book points out the choice is ours. It goes one to explain about karma, being in hell, and the hungry ghost realms.

I found particularly interesting the four powers of purification which are support, acknowledgment, taking responsibility, not repeating mistakes and purification. The intense and direct conversations about karma are awe inspiring and engaging. As the book states wealth and poverty are a state of mind. When you finish this book you know that something of importance is at stake - you. Change of Heart shows you how to live your life with courageous honesty. I learned a lot from this jewel of clarity and insight and will re-read it many times.

Regularly, I am reminded of the depth and breadth of Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche's genius. His project, the Bodhisattva Peace Training, is a very good example of this. Lama Shenpen has done the world a genuine service by organizing these teachings into an approachable text, and by keeping the training going for professionals and others interested in helping. Chagdud Tulku not only generated the Peace Training, but also trained lamas such as Lama Shenpen to keep his work going and to help it grow. That is practical genius, motivated by a genuine desire to be helpful.

To be quicker: the Bodhisattva Peace Training has real intelligence behind it. It's the real deal, and I believe it can be of real use to people and the planet.

Gratitude!

Practical and effective meditation exercises

Review Date: 2004-10-22
"To bring forth good heart," explains Chagdud Tulku, "we must use spiritual methods. We are never too old or too young to do so. One of the key points of these teachings is that everyone can apply them." Change of Heart is a compilation of the Bodhisattva Peace Training sessions of Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche, a beloved Tibetan lama who passed away in 2002. Tulku's stories and analogies to teach us how to counteract old habits through meditation. The practical and effective meditation exercises increase our awareness of our connectedness and expand our capacity for love, joy, and compassion.

As Westerners, we might find it difficult to relate to some of the Buddhist concepts regarding karma, suffering, past lives, and impermanence. It's not necessary that we embrace these concepts, only that we contemplate them. The purpose of these teachings is not to impose the Buddhist beliefs upon us, but rather to provide a method for increasing outer and inner peace for all beings. It doesn't mean we need to retreat from the world or abandon our normal lifestyle. "It is a matter of bringing love, compassion, and awareness to everything we do," says Tulku. "The merit of helping others, dedicated to all beings, is boundless and becomes a powerful force for positive change. Continually contemplate impermanence and cultivate nonattachment. Practice contemplation and relaxation. Review your day, reflecting on the virtue and negativity. The point of our practice is not to have visionary or clairvoyant experiences, but to reduce mind's poisons and enhance our positive qualities. Ultimately, change is the key - to change the heart, to discover mind's true nature."

Tulku advocates a meditation technique that alternates between a state of contemplation and relaxation. "Contemplating without resting is like stirring the sediment in a pond. On the other hand, resting without contemplating is like practicing archery without a target. We cut through mental dullness and attachment to emptiness through contemplation. Then we cut our attachment to concepts by letting the mind rest.. We go back and forth, so that we are neither consumed by swirling concepts nor lost in a dull or comalike state of free thought." One of my favorite exercises is to contemplate that we have all known each other during at least one lifetime. It helps me dissipate the tension that can arise when I'm around people who are angry, prejudiced, or resentful. "There are no real strangers anywhere;" Tulku theorizes, "we have previously been intimate with every being as we have been with our own mother in this life. No matter what role someone plays now, that being has at one time been our parent."
Regarding parenting, Tulku encourages us to be sincere with our children. Young children respond well to stories that convey a lesson. And above all, he advises that "The most effective way for parents to teach their children spiritual values is to live them - to demonstrate respect, loving kindness, and compassion."
Acceptance and compassion are the foundation of effective communication and relationships. "When we work with others," Tulku reminds us that "it is most important for us to be accepting. No matter how right you may think you are, trying to impose your opinion on others is wrong."
The Western world is a self-centered society. Many people remain focused on our own well being and take little action to ensure the well being of the world community. This is manifested by our obsession with the acquisition of material goods, supersized homes, and exclusive ideologies. Tulku comments that "To be of greater benefit, we must develop equanimity, an equal regard for all beings; compassion, the wish that all suffering come to an end; love, the aspiration that all beings find both temporary and lasting happiness; and the ability to rejoice in others' good fortune. Our challenge is to let go of our judgements and biases, including the distinctions we make between victim and aggressor."

The Bodhisattva Peace Training of Chagdud Tulku is an excellent tool for cultivating inner peace and helping us removing the veil of our misperceptions. "We have a deeply ingrained habit of believing that our everyday reality - this long dream we call life - is inherently true. This is ignorance. Because we don't realize that we're dreaming, we have attachment or aversion to the different circumstances that arise. The mind is like a television's remote control," observes Tulku. If we know how to change channels, we can change the picture."

We don't all have the good fortune (karma) to meet a great Tibetan Buddhist teacher much less receive their teachings. With this book, Lama Shenpen Drolma has provided many of us with that precious opportunity. Here in straight forward terms are the basic principles we all need to understand how we can cultivate peace in our lives and in the world. After reading it front to back, I flip open the book almost daily as a practice for establishing a more contented life. This happiness is not just for me but also for all of the people that I encounter. Try it - you'll be surprised at how quickly you can make this change of heart.

This is an excellent book! The advantage of this book is that you learn what you need to focus on tactically, instead of plodding through the usual generic tactics books. Once you discover what you need to work on, that's what you focus on. You'll know your strengths and weaknesses. The books costs less than an hour of chess instruction. It takes a while to complete the exercises, but the learning value is significant. Highly recommended.

This book really helps to know how good/bad you are in Chess. Everyone will feel that Igor Khmelnitsky invested tremendous effort to make this book. This book comprises 120 questions to assess different levels of your chess knowledge. The good thing about this book is when you go through it and finish your exams and know your scores you will be amazed by the accuracy of the test. With this test and his recommendations everyone can play better chess after this. I found its very useful book even for beginners (like me) to assess their weakness and strength and improve further. Worth of buying it, highly recommended.

This contains an extremely well selected set of 120 questions. Unlike typical "Find the best move" books, the author gives 2 questions for each position and 4 multiple choice answers. None of the problems are simple, and force you to think deeply before answering, looking for every possible resource from both sides. The answer explanations are very instructive as well. You can't go wrong with this book, it will tell you what your stength is and which tactical theme/technique you need to improve.

They have very simple pictures and very easy to read information , unlike lots of chess books out there.
This will help everybody who is looking to got one notch above where they currently are. Lessons in Tactics, counter attacks, strategies, defense are all very well given. Also very easy to follow. I recommend this to everybody who wants to play better chess.

Having purchased many types of teaching resources over the last few years, I have finally found one more helpful than all the others combined. Evertson not only outlines the procedures in an easy to read manner, but she also gives excellent examples of her theories in practice. I was expecting a book that strictly dealt with keeping order in the classroom, but what I received was so much more. This book describes ways to teach that will ensure that classrooms run smoothly and more importantly the students learn. I only hope that other new teachers find this text at the beginning of their careers as the advice contained is invaluable. If your budget or time schedule only allows for one book, definitely buy this one!

"Classroom Management..." is THE book for those who are looking for the proverbial Teacher's Manual. Apart from covering all the basics in a lot of detail, it offers checklists and (so-called) case studies. The downside of this is that the book starts out a bit dry and too straightforward, with instructions so clear-cut you would think they are for operating some sort of machinery. The "case-studies" are examples rather than studies, so the objection here lies with the misnomer. These are clearly minor drawbacks to a great book that only gets better as you read on. With a fabulous Further Reading section after every chapter, and delectable cartoons sprinkled throughout the book, it is an essential text for every teacher's personal library.

I am in charge of training a group of 12 sales people in our company; some are brand new and some are seasoned sales professionals. All 12 of this sales force are reading The Complete Guide to Successful Selling and I'm hearing back some tremendous results. After reading even the first chapter several trainees told me they have increased their ability to talk to customers and also in knowing the exact right issues to be addressed with customers or clients.

And there are great tools on handing the more tricky customers. Our sales force is now doing better at taking these and even building these into stronger long-term relationships. And, best of all, the principles are very simple to learn to use and remember.

I would recommend this book to anyone involved in sales or a sales-related activity.

I find this book really helpful and insightful regarding all the aspects of singing, breathing, producing sound in general, etc. It not only helps with singing, but it for instance also helps you learn better breathing habits. I'd recommend this book to anyone.

I should probably also add that to learn to sing you need a teacher too, but for as far as books go, this is possibly one that I would have to put on my list of favorites. I find it hard to imagine that any other book will provide more insight.

For people who need to do without a teacher I'd most certainly recommend this book. You might want to search for CD's or DVD's as an extra learning aid too, to help you visualise/audiolise things if you find this hard to do. An instrument might be nice. You probably need something to produce the desired notes so you can sing along with them. This will be a great help when doing the suggested exercises. But even without such help, the book contains plenty of practical info.

At first I was turned off by this book's textbook appearance, once however I successfully pushed myself past the cover I was fascinated. Like most voice teachers, I've read my share of "This is the Only Way to Teach Singing" books. I have found that the more truly knowledgeable a person is, the more they recognize how many variables exist and how many approaches may be necessary in order to arrive at the desired destination. Rather than pontificating on his particular brand of vocal technique, Richard Alderson focuses on indisputable physical activities and his discovery of vocal mechanics through experiences with his students. Alternating between descriptions of functional concepts and first-hand stories of their application, this book was a pleasure to read. I often found myself unable to put it down. - Okay, but what can I say... I love voice :-)

A good, reliable handbook on teaching voice

This book is another of the many great books out there on vocal pedagogy.

Richard Alderson, a professional singer voice teacher and choral director taught at Northwestern University. Taking a very practical approach, Alderson introduces the principles of voice teaching. Later chapters cover breathing, voice production, resonance, vowels, registers, articulation, and several chapters on choral voices and changing voices (boys' and girls').

Alderson is informed about proper vocal technique, and the book's bibliography demonstrates his reliance on the best sources. Alderson's book seems much more pragmatic than other books on vocal pedagogy like Richard Miller and others. Alderson also makes many analogies to many other fields, especially athletics. Many teachers will find this helpful--it can be very difficult to explain to students what they should try to do to correct their singing.

At the expense of his practical explanation, some voice teachers may miss some of the "nuts and bolts" as to what is really going on in the voice. This handbook does not explain all of the inner workings of vocal production. Better sources can be found in books by Clifton Ware, Richard Miller, and Oren Brown.

Fans of good aesthetics will probably also wish this book had a different cover (this one shouts, "Welcome to the 1970s!").

All that aside, this is a useful book and voice teachers will find it helpful. I would also recommend James McKinney's book as another great resource. Enjoy!

By combining interviews, various "E" learning techniques and the IBM experiences the author is sure to change how "E" learning is viewed in the classroom and in business. By following the blueprint set up by IBM, utilizing "E" learning in tandem with traditional means of learning, this book shows that "E" learning will become the corporate model going forward to be used jointly with traditional instruction.

This book surpassed my expctations, in that the author laid out a highly detailed and disciplined business approach to reserching and documenting his findings. The author doesn't present IBM's experience as the "corporate" model. He extracted the business case elements and decision points critical to the successful development and application of E-Learning techniques. While written from a business perspective I think it has great application value to the academic world - given the ever spiraling upward costs of formal education.

If you are considering an investment in e-learning or looking for a competitive advantage Tai has done a major portion of the research to allow user and reader to make an informed decision. This research is very beneficial to corporate decision makers and students considering a degree on-line. Well worthwhile for anyone researching e-learning. Having an insight into best practices at IBM is an added benefit. Should be required reading for teachers and corporate trainers.

While this book focuses on e-learning (electronic learning) as a powerful tool for corporate training, there are many insights and recommendations that could be useful for professional educators in high school, college, and adult education programs. As both a business executive and college teacher, I found ideas throughout the book that could expand both the reach and effectiveness of my educational activities. Here are some examples:
-- E-learning can provide "just in time" training, rather than "just in case" learning. Computer technology can bring information to an employee's desktop or laptop at the very moment they need that information to complete a task. This is called "on demand" learning.
-- Electronic technology allows you to "repurpose" or re-use valuable material or content for future use. For example, the information from a dynamic live business conference can be captured on video, edited, and delivered to a broad audience through e-learning.
-- Using e-learning for "pre-class" work provides students with a common starting point and the same degree of preparation prior to traditional classroom or hands-on training. It provides students with the "threshold knowledge" required for a class. This concept of "blended" learning is adaptable to any educational situation.
-- There is no substitute for a gifted instructor and a skilled teacher in delivering an educational program or course. There will always be a need for face-to-face instruction. Some educators have rebelled against the emergence of e-learning. Enlightened educators need to grasp the power of the technology, such as the ability to reach thousands of students at one time rather than just a handful. It does not replace traditional instruction. It supplements it.
I highly recommend this book. It is must reading for corporate training professionals and for professional educators looking to expand both their reach and effectiveness.

Contemplating E-learning???

Unlike other e-learning books which focus on e-learning implementation problems, this book covers the e-learning lifecycle from justification through execution and illustrates the effectiveness of e-learning as measured by IBM's experience. Extremely well researched, the author's in-depth interviews documents the how and why e-learning programs are developed and instituted. The book exemplifies the concept of why e-learning is not a field of dreams. Because you built it doesn't mean they will come and learn. Above all, the author demonstrates through IBM's experience why e-learning should only be considered if it makes strategic and economic sense. A must read for any corporation contemplating e-learning.

This is a much better book than the pink cover and the title suggests. Although romance is involved, this is a deep book with good characters, fine dialogue, and some insights into the human condition that rang so true they gave me goosebumps.

OK, I realize that the pink cover makes this book look like a questionable chick novel. And while the major action does focus on Dr. Holly Campbell's love life, I plowed through it because the characters are so well drawn. Holly especially comes across as very real, even though she's a bombshell doctor on a glamorous tour of England, whose big problem is that two hot men are after her. What keeps this book grounded and human is Holly's hysterical view of life. It's a great book, and I can't wait for the next one.

This novel is a wonderful first work. The characters were developed thoroughly and clearly. The writing was fun, exciting, clever, and intelligent. I, at times, found myself in the kitchen with Holly and Alecia. Or in the common dorm room with Holly and Ed. Or on my way to see a psychic.
I could not wait to turn the page, but I frequently read the same sentence over and over and over - laughing, or sighing, or wondering. It is quite an accomplishment, as I often reflect on certain scenes and smile, remembering the novel, its message, and the positive transformation of the main character.
Try this book, you will fall in love with it.

Won my Heart

Maggie Leffler has captured a unique, young woman who won my heart. Holly, the main character in "The Diagnosis of Love," is a thirty-year-old physician who leaves the USA for a temporary position in an ER outside of London. In addition to the usual young woman's romantic confusion and fear of commitment, Holly confronts life and death in the ER while she is still sorting out her mother's tragic, early death as well as her mother's choices in life. What I love about the book is, like life, nothing is simply right or wrong. Holly muses philosophically, diagnoses precisely and yet can meltdown like the rest of us. I loved reading this book, which is a real page-turner.

Not for Women Only -- An Addition to the Literature of Medicine

The title and the subject matter -- a professional woman resolving personal crises -- suggest that the target audience for the book is women. Yet I think that men would enjoy it. So if guys buy it for the women in their lives, both the men and women should read it.

The medical scenes are the book's strengths. The extended early scene in the Pittsburgh hospital is insightful, sad, then amusing about how doctors view their patients. This scene artfully contrasts later events at a the hospital in England, where Holly encounters different attitudes toward health and disease. And Holly is never off-duty: being a doctor impacts the entire way that she views what happens around her. Especially striking is a scene in which Holly recognizes the serious medical condition of a close friend; especially amusing is a scene in Scotland when a tourist needs medical attention. The book is a fine addition to literature about medicine.

The book is also good at extended scenes, at dialogs that unearth tensions and feelings. One of the best scenes in when Holly has a long meeting with figures from her mother's past; Leffler lets the scene develop gradually, lets the characters test each others' reactions before plunging on. Leffler does not push to get effects. The material about Holly's mother also fascinates: readers can contrast Holly's own dis-ease with her life to her mother's dissatisfaction with her life at a similar age. (Yeah, there's the women's stuff.)

These comments should not make the book seem too serious. Leffler has fun with some of the eccentric characters and with the European locales.

Although this book is now a few years old, it's still 100% applicable to the e-learning situation in today's workplace.

This book is still the most consise and most readable quick overview of e-learning. A busy person like me will find that an investment of less than a couple of hours will give you a comprehensive overview, and let you really understand the issues and the tradeoffs at stake.

After reading this, I feel I could hold my own in a discussion with experts that have years of experience.

Great practical guide to e-learning

Henderson's book on e-learning is one of the most straight-forward, honest looks at e-learning that I have seen in recent years. His Q&A format allows the reader to quickly jump to points of interest without spending time on topics that do not pertain. As a person who has had to deal with business training "gone wrong", Henderson's suggestions for a successful e-learning environment make a lot of sense. As other reviewers have pointed out, I believe that this book and the concepts it describes will translate over to academia readily. Universities and Junior colleges would greatly benefit from taking a step back and focusing on the basics. Schools that are currently attempting online classes could be improved if the took to heart the topics that Henderson describes. Since his experience at IBM has given him a first hand look at how online learning can be done right, companies and learning institutes would be wise to pay attention to what he has to say.

By focusing on technical details, real-life cost, and the practicality of using learning on the web, the reader is able to quickly get up to speed on all the issues that must be considered when online training is attempted.

The practical guide was very useful; it was so easy to find information quickly that I am recommending it to my company's training division.

An exciting survey.

a quick glance through various aspects of e-learning

This book is a quick glance through various aspects of e-learning. The coverage is not deep, but very broad. This book tells what is e-learning all about; provides specific case studies and interviews with e-learning leaders; presents economical analysis; shows how to apply e-learning to your business; and describes the IBM 4-tier learning model.

However, I do not agree with the author's assertion that "Learning is work, not entertainment". A good learning is always pleasurable and amusing.

This title is easy to read, you may wade through it once and then keep it as your personal e-learning FAQ reference book.

Al Henderson does an excellent job of demystifying e-learning by describing the many facets of corporate e-learning in a style that is both informative and enjoyable. This book will appeal to a wide audience, whether the reader is new to e-learning or has spent many years in the field. The book can be used a reference, an introduction, or a guide to the capabilities and possibilities that e-learning has to offer. The case studies are useful in linking concepts to practical application. Readers will enjoy the perspectives on the future of e-learning provided by industry thought leaders.

If your organization is considering e-learning, I would recommend reading this book and reviewing the concepts with your stakeholders to ensure your are pursuing e-learning for the right reasons, and are approaching it with realistic expectations.
