A term, concept, calling, and duty from the early days of Christianity, "catechesis" (related to catechism) is the part of Catholicism concerned with "education in the faith of children, young people, and adults which includes especially the teaching of Christian doctrine imparted...in an organic and systematic way, with a view to initiating the hearers into the fullness of Christian life." The Second Vatican Council called for a renewal of catechesis in 1971. The "Directory" provides guidance for this catechesis that is a central part of the Church's activity and aims at all times in all situations with all persons. Mostly for Catholic bishops and priests, the "Directory" nonetheless does have particular sections for lay persons; and its general material on Catholic ideals and theological principles, organizations and procedures, and texts and other resources apply to anyone interested in catechesis, the lifeblood of Catholicism.

This is book 2 in the Wagon's West series.

The wagon train is now heading into new territory for them. They are on the way to Oregon and are leaving Independence, MO behind. They are also now being led by Whip Holt. They are traveling through Nebraska and continuing westward.

This is the story of their struggles against the British & Russian forces trying to keep them for making the trip as well and the environment and Native Americans.

This book is one of the 6th printing from back in the late 70's. If you are interested in the settlement of the American West this is one series that you need to revisit.

Forging The Oregon Trail - Outstanding Historical Fiction!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-04
"Nebraska" is Book 2 in Dana Fuller Ross' magnificent "Wagons West" series. In 1837 the United States was experiencing its first financial depression. Banks were failing, factories closing, and farms were being foreclosed. US citizens were increasingly hungry and dispossessed. Out of a population of 16 million, a quarter of a million were unemployed. People by the thousands were moving West to settle the wilderness and make a new start in life. Former US President Andrew Jackson, new President Martin Van Buren, and financier John Jacob Astor decided to assign mountainman and weathered veteran Sam Brentwood and his partner Michael "Whip" Holt to form the first wagon train of pioneers with the purpose of crossing the North American continent and settling the Oregon Territory. Imperial Russia and Great Britain were also determined to claim the Oregon Territory for themselves and planned to do everything in their countries' power to sabotage the United States' effort.

The caravan now included 500 people and their horses, oxen and prairie schooners. Having reached the frontier town of Independence, Missouri, Sam Brentwood and his new wife leave the group to open a trading depot to supply future pioneers and wagon trains. Wagon scout Whip Holt now takes over as wagonmaster and the legendary group begins to move across the Great Plains to the Rockie Mountains on the second stage of their journey. They are set upon by hostile Indians, British and Russian spies, accidents and illness, and the petty bickering that comes from interacting with the same people day after day, along with the monotony of the trail. Relationships and rivalries are formed which prove to be every bit as exciting as the journey itself.

The characters are outstanding and extremely realistic. The author vividly brings history to life in "Nebraska," as in the other books in the series. And the politics behind the settling of the West are fascinating. As one would expect, the novel is chock-full of adventure, hardship, courage, love, loss, tragedy and triumph. Many details have been taken from actual diaries and journals of early pioneers. Once you start this book you won't be able to stop until you have read all 24 novels. The next one is "Wyoming," and deals with the third leg of the trip -wintering in the Rocky Mountains and the move to Oregon. Very highly recommended!

I love going to bed and breakfasts, but the guide books available either have hard to understand information, or very little information at all. This one is unique. There are no strange icons to decipher, the information is easy to follow, and there are photographs (not cheesy line drawings) for each inn. I was not only able to find a GREAT bed and breakfast at which to stay, but I knew the pertinent details going in. What I really appreciated was the ability to drive right to the correct property, recognizing it from the photograph. I'll use this guide from now on!

As an information junkie, I'm always turning to the Internet for fast and up-to-date information for my garden design business. This book has replaced my computer for first-glance information. Debra provides significant editorial value in this reference, which I find dog-eared and well-used in a few short weeks. A must-have for any gardener in the Northwest, and a brilliant gift for a gardener new to the area.

It's a Northwest garden enthusiast's dream come true! Stephanie Feeney has outdone herself and compiled information in this edition I will refer to again and again. The list of nurserys to visit is complete with directions, business hours, the types of plants they sell and what they specialize in, e-mail addresses, and any other helpful information that may be of interest. I especially appreciate the geographic locator in the very back that breaks down locations by region that makes planning a garden outing a breeze. I even found a few nurseries in my small town that I didn't know existed. Other chapters include organizations that help gardeners, clubs, foundations, societies and volunteer opportunities, education, gardening with children and young people, internet gardening, publications, professional services, gardens to visit, shows and exhibits, and the list goes on. And it's all written in a friendly personal manner.

This book contains a short biography, and where possible a picture, of many notable African-American women. Such luminaries as Maya Angelou, Ella Fitzgerald and Rosa Parks are here, as are many lesser-known lights - authors, educators, activists, performers, and much more. It's well and truly a great resource, one that is sure to please anyone interested in great American women!

I highly recommend this book.

Old Reliable Almanac

I've purchased the Old Farmer's Almanac for several years and have always enjoyed them. The weather information is amazingly accurate! The gardening information is very helpful and the trivia articles are always interesting. It's imposssible to read one and not learn something. It's a fun read, at the very least.

A Must Have for Gardeners
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2006-01-16
My parents wouldn't think of planting their garden without consulting the Old Farmer's Almanac for the sign of the moon. They have great success following the guidelines for when to plant root crops, etc.
Others find it valuable for the weather predictions (covering 16 regions). Other useful info fills out the book (Best Fishing Days, a list of holidays).
A variety of fillers such as trends in homes and fashions and collectibles plump up the almanac and make good reading for a snowy day. I like that it has the symbolic meanings of herbs, flowers and trees. One article in this issue is "Toys that withstood the test of time." The almanac contains a little something for everyone. It has been published since 1792, so obviously it fills a need.

This book gets my highest recommendation--and I'm a huge critic! Just reading the intro helped me get a complete overview of how to find the perfect school for me, develop a great admissions strategy, Independent Day schools vs. Semester schools, and it has awesome tips on how to secure the best financial aid. Not to mention the 1,500 schools at my fingertips! Worth every dime.

A MUST for families considering private education!

Review Date: 2001-06-05
As an education professional who works in the field of Private Secondary Schools, I can without a doubt give this Peterson's publication the highest recommendation possible. The guide is easy to use and quite informative. While not all schools are presented in the format of a wonderfully detailed one to two page article, most 9-12 private day or boarding schools in the United States are included. At the very least, you will be able to investigate the following areas at each school: Academics, Athletics, Endowment, Number of Faculty members (a breakdown of how many hold Bachelors, Masters or Ph.Ds), Physical Plant, Amount of Financial Aid given last year, Applied vs. Accepted Statistics & Contact information.

I have worked with many families who were exploring the idea of sending their child to private school. This guide has been their Bible. Whether a family is familiar with independent education or is just being introduced to the idea, I promise that this guide will be your best reference throughout both the exploration and application process. A campus visit and a school's own literature are of course always the best sources of information. The Peterson's guide, however, will help a family to determine which schools are a good match and will best meet their needs, thus making the best of each campus visit.

This guide has everything the policy analyst or 12th grade civics student needs, but the international data is where it really shines. If the county has a government, all the relevant data's included. Even if you don't pay attention to politics, having this guide on your shelf will (1) make you look smart, and (2) help settle countless arguments and bets. Trivial Pursuit doesn't stand a chance.

Also, make sure you pay the extra to get access to the Internet site. It includes updated information and a great search function.

This is an excellent reference tool for students and professionals. I use my almanac regularly for national and state information. As a consultant in the field, I find that I can answer questions and find the information I need quickly and efficiently. In addition, the layout of the book makes it easy to use as a teaching guide for students and interns. I look forward to the new edition.

An exceptionally useful and informative book. This is a review of the best barbecue restaurants in the country by two men who set out on a barbecue "quest". Each restaurant chosen is described in both a charming and mouthwatering fashion by men who obviously love barbecue. In the last part of the book they offer outstanding recipes from some of the best BBQ joints as well as information on cooking and putting together your own backyard barbecue. Fun reading if you love to eat and fun eating if you follow their advice. Recommended!!!
