It's usually pretty easy to tell the good guys from the bad guys. Humans are the good guys - demons, vampires, and other ghouls are the bad guys (except Angel and Doyle of course!) This black and white view gets some serious testing when Angel starts helping a group of demons known as the Serpentene. The Serpentene are being attacked by the Tremblors, another group of demons. Angel is treading lightly in the case because he is not sure his new friends are on the level - but he has to act when humans are kidnapped. Angel has to rescue humans, stop the "big one" and figure out who the bad guys are - how hard can that be?
This was a great Angel novel, but I feel that it lacked the spark that some of the other authors like Christopher Golden have. The nice twists and turns of the novel are very interesting, as are the little insights into the characters. It is not often that you are left wondering who the good guys are - and this novel is one of them.
If you don't enjoy this novel, don't let it put you off the rest of the series because most of them are excellent.
Angel-mania!!!

This book was the first Angel book I read and I thought it was very good.It had mad fight scenes and good one-liners, it even had Wolfram and Hart!Ok,the story:Quake demons attack another tribe of demons called Serpentene. It turns out that the Quake demons are kidnapping people for a ritual and as usual Angel goes to stop them!the demons need people associated with the 4 elements:earth, water, fire, air. It is a great book for people who love the Angel crew. That's all from me.Hope my review helped!

Doyle has a premonition about a seismic shift, and when everyone becomes nervous, Angel decides to further investigate this vision. He is led into contact with the Serpentene community, demons who look like humans but who have taken over the bodies of snakes, shedding their skin over time. They live very affluently in their own community and are very fashionable and financially secure as telemarketers. Appearing very gentle and harmless, Angel agrees to protect them from a group of Quake demons, who are out to destroy them.
Cordelia is excited that Angel has taken the case, but Doyle is not too sure. He sets out to find out everything he can about the Serpentenes before they lure Cordelia into their appealing and luxurious lifestyle. Angel is beginning to get a little suspicious as well, and he doesn't understand why this "innocent" group is under attack by the Quake demons.
After some further investigation, Angel learns a little bit more about what is going on between the Serpentenes and the Quake demons. Are the Serpentenes as harmless and gentle as they appear? Does Cordelia end up drawn into the Serpentene community? Don't miss this chilling episode of ANGEL that will be sure to keep you reading at the edge of your seat!

I have only had exposure to Angel in the third season of the TV program, so I've never seen Doyle before. If the author captured his character is acurately as he did Cordelia's, then I've got to track down tapes of these earlier episodes!
The dialogue in this book was great. Some of the banter between Doyle and Cordy had me laughing out loud. I also enjoyed the struggle Angel had to feel part of the 21st Century - changing with the times is one thing, but it's got to be tough to do for two hundred years! The 80's flashback was absolutely hysterical.
At first the plot seemed like it was going to be pretty simple, but things got complicated quickly and there's enough twists to keep you guessing. The Angel vs Angelus showdown was cool - hope they try something like that in future epsiodes on TV. This is the only Angel book I've read, so I don't know how it compares to others, but I'd recommend it to any fan of the TV show

As literature, it isn't one of the best books I have ever read, but as a book based on a game (or RPG) - what usualy results in not very good histories, and I have read many - it's good. It's well written.
In order to have how to compare my taste would be good to you to know that to me "Tides of darkness" was bad (too descriptive); "Cycle of hatred", tasteless (no emotion, no surprise); "They of the dragon" worse, it's boring; "Of blood and honor" is nice; "The last guardian" is very cool"; and I think that "Lord of the clans is good", but "Rise of the Horde" is a bit better.
It's very cool to "see" guys like Gul'dan, Ner'Zhul, a young Doomhammer and Hellscream, as well as Kiljaeden and Archimond yet as "normal" people (hahaha).
The way it's explained why a shamanistic and relatively peacefull race, became engaged in a war with his very tranquil neybohood, was a great idea (demons rules!)
The rise of the horde (the fact, not the book) is terrifying. Durotan seems a very lucid german, before the second war, seeing the third reich rising and he can't do anything to stop it. Chirstie Golden makes you feel Durotan's pain.
To finish: the book is worth it's price. Buy it! You will have some fun.

... from a WoW novel. It was stunning, really. Okay, maybe that isn't the right word. But if you're a diehard fan of the games like me, you'll find yourself very attached to the storylines, especially if you're an Orc and/or Draenei fan. Some of the scenes near the end of the novel had me very emotional as you watch a genocide, one of a race and another of an ancient culture.
I suggest this to every single WoW player out there who wants to start reading the books.

As it is with most Buffy novels it isn't the monster that you are battling its the internal conflicts with the group. And when Faith is added to the Buffy equation things get a bit intense. Buffy has her own past demons to trump, just like new good girl Faith. And in the end this book is a thrilling ride with a wonderfully ending that gives you a sense of peace over the Faith and Buffy debacle.

This book has the good(Buffy and the scoobs), the bad(Aegirie or the Mourach), the dumb(the council of course), the smart(Faith) and the strict(Order Of Sages). The Order of Sages is like a brighter council, that's all! Giles would fair on the Sage, but he hates them, so he's with neither! You don't know who to trust in this one, Spike isn't the most reliable person on Earth, Faith could do anything, but the worst was Quentin Traverse, the member of council who sent Helen Fontaine and her silent partner, David Haversham. The Order Of Sages sent Rosanna to meet Giles and the crew. Believe or not, Buffy and Faith actually start getting along, wow, isn't that a miracle! And you also find out why Faith got so insane in the first place. The answer was very simple, actually. Well, the Mourach are back in town, and something is taking over the bodies of humans and changing them, Xander even gets hit, the only ones don't get affected by the things, are of course, Buffy, Faith(slayers) and Spike(vampire, living dead)! Spike and Xander put up some great humour in this book, as well as perky Willow and Faith! Buffy's the same old type, and you know Giles! Anya takes over Dawn's part this time, seeming as Dawn is only mentioned 2 or 3 times during the book! Not quite as serious though, or screamy! Great book, get it!!

In "The Wisdom of War" Buffy and the Scobby Gang find themselves in the middle of a war between two classes of ocean dwelling demons, ones that most vampires are instictivly afraid of. If that wasn't bad enough she gets thrown several curve balls to hamper progress. One is the Watcher's Council has sprung Faith from prison to help them clean up the mess (as usual, the Council has news they will not share with Buffy or Giles). Aslo a new supernatural hunting club has arrived in Sunnydale to sort of help.
This isn't a bad book, and really has a lot going for it. It is an interesting story with some vauge ties to H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos (which I beleive someone else also mentioned.) The action is fast and frequent.
But for the down side, the characters were a little bland this time out, with Dawn and Tera suffering more than anyone, really. sometimes the scenes could go on and on, drwing them out much further than they needed to be. It was some times a chore to finish.
I don't know, this is just a middle of the road book, some tighter editing probably would have worked wonders.

I am a huge CSI Fan and have been upkeeping with the series through the television series. I heard and have seen the novels, but never really took interest in reading them or even picking it up. I thought that the novels would be of repeat cases from the TV show, and that it wouldn't be as visually appealing, but boy, was I in for something else. So, I tried out reading the book for a school book report and I am happy to say that I made a good decision.
I found the book to be perhaps even more visual than the TV series, as the author makes some rather funny, yet detailed descriptions of the case. Most of the characters were introduced and were developed very well. Grissom still seemed like ol' Grissom and Brass seemed to be passionate about his job as ever. I really enjoyed reading the novel, as I crave for mystery and murder. I think that reading this book would be a good opportunity for those who have previously watched the TV series because then it is more fun to really picture the characters as you would hear/see on TV.
I'd highly recommend this book to CSI fans (Las Vegas please!) because who doesn't love the LVPD cast? It'll definitely take you a step higher than the TV show visually. :)

*Binding Ties* is slightly different than the other books and episodes in the series. This particular book only deals with one case, instead of the usual 2 or 3 at a time.
After a 10-year hiatus, a serial killer is back in action. Or is he? Is there a copycat out there? The CSI team and Captain Brass are determined to find the truth by following the evidence. For Brass, this is personal because this was one of his first cases and it went unsolved.
The whole plot reminded me of the Zodiac Killer, a Californian serial killer in the 60's, whom the police were never able to capture. Then, one day, the Zodiac Killer just simply disappeared.
I found this story plot to be predictable, especially when you only have a small group of people who knew the real contents of the serial killer's killing signature. Just round them up and play the "20 Questions" game. But no, you'll be taken on the long-winded investigation. In fact, don't be surprised if you figured out who's the killer by the half-way mark.

This was a fantastic and fast-paced thriller. This particular volume focused a bit more on Jim Brass and his relationship with a serial killer from an unsolved set of cases. While there is a lot of the usual detailed work that the CSI characters do so well, this time Brass and Grissom are racing against a true psychotic killer who has been goaded to re-emerge into the light in order to defend his own specific killing technique and "genius." For those readers who have liked other CSI novels by Max Allan Collins, they are sure to like this excellent addition.

Another quick, easy read (I read this one in the course of a day), BINDING TIES has a great storyline and better editing and character development than the last CSI story I read.
Reading this book is a lot like watching an episode of my favorite show. I'm anxious to get my hands on more titles based on CSI.

This book should contain pictures of things worn in the movies, and it does. I wanted more information at times, and the book made me greedy for even more images, but disappointment in this book would most likely be the result of an aficionado's personal quirks and expectations of books of this sort. This book contains Incredible Pictures of costumes, articles of clothing that leave you awestruck by the minds that conceived of them. Pictures of a lot of folks who have passed on, shown wearing things made just for them, I think often just coincidentally in the context of a character - some so enhancing, so perfect, so flattering that all you can do is shake your head and do your best not to wallow in the comforting haze of nostalgia. A book about fashion, costume, and Hollywood. Lots of fun and illuminating facts about the people who paid for, created, made, and wore the stuff. While needing no handicap, when considering the times, the technology, the state of historical research - the realization of some of the older pieces shown in the book is staggering; achievements which broadcast themselves from page after page, from black & white stills, from the beginning of movie making [to the present by the way, which I am personally not as excited by - an inexcusable bias]. A terrific book.

The glamour of the book strikes any reader immediately. Particularly special is the text connecting the photographs and the costume sketches (so rarely seen!). One cannot come away from this book without a newfound wealth of knowledge of their favorite films and an appreciation for costume designers' thoughtful and purpose-laden participation in creating cinematic magic.
No picture in this book is boring. I think the one of the most intriguing aspects is the choice of male costumes presented. I, for one, am definitely guilty of overlooking actors' seemingly plain suits for actresses' ball gowns in movies. I quickly learned and indulged in the equally important glamour (or lack there of) of male costumes. I now understand the fine tailoring in Chinatown and I now can smell Borat's grey suit (gross! can you imagine?).

My oldest daughter read these books years ago, and she recently passed them on to her little sister who is 11. My youngest daughter started with the first one and has read all 10 books straight though. She LOVES them as much as her big sister. Her favorite character is Michael (Big Sis loved Max). She is constantly talking about the books to me and has gotten several of her friends hooked on them, too. They've been well-read over the last few months by many of my daughter's friends.
She has also seen much of the t.v. series based on these books. The series only loosely follows the story lines in the books, and both of my daughters have told me that the books are much, much better.
Based on their conversations with me and the enthusiasm with which they read them, I would recommend these books to any pre-teen girl.

Book #4 "The Watcher" ended with Isabel getting back to Max with the crystals to save him after Michael was captured and Ray, ther alien friend, killed.
This book starts out with Max taking the crystals to unite with his world's consciousness, and being saved. We also see Michael's experiences in the Clean Slate lab. He meets up with a human girl who's supposed to be psychic (she's a runaway coerced by Valenti in to conning him into revealing his secrets)and a boy named Adam who was in the only incubation pod that Ray couldn't rescue in 1947. Adam had been raised by Valenti as his "son" with no contact in the outside world and subjected to constant experiments
The three teens make an escape attempt, only Adam gets out. Cameron, the girl, stays behind as part of her cover to get the information from Michael.
Adam reaches Roswell and the rest of the gang, they aren't sure about him but raid Clean Slate to rescue Michael. Adam destroys the place using his powers.

This book continues the Roswell saga where the other one finished off.with Micheal held captive by Valenti (who gets hot under the collar by the end-literally)and meets 3 new playmates there's a new girl in town in the form of traitor Cameron who Mikey is smitten with and cute (or is he,Max?) innocent Alien Adam who loves Daddy Valenti until he finds out what he is and then escapes the compound and falls for our resident princess Liz much to Maxs dismay, the scene in the car where Max obsesses about whether or not Adam is cute is so funny i went into hysterics. The endeing is funfilled with the gang springing Mikey from the compound and finding out a little something about Adam in the process, all is revealed in the next installment. chock full of shocks suprises and sweetness esp. Max and Liz a must read for everyone. i personally could not put it down and have banned my sisters grubby mitts from EVER reading it.

Definitely to "B"! I found this book to be a great "treasure map" to buried gems at the video store. The reviews are witty, intelligent and well researched. Mr. Apel writes with a passion and obvious love of movies that is missing from many other jaded critic's works. Even if you don't agree with all of the author's choices, this is a fun read that is well worth the price of admission.

On the rows and rows of shelving, with hundreds of fllms I know nothing about, its nice to have someone to tell me, 'This one is good, check it out.' This way I am not aimlessly risking two hours and several bucks on another possible clunker. This book is approachable and useful. Its got good movies, not just popular or commercially successful movies. I recommend it to anyone who is not into the top row, studio formula, big budget, maybe-worthwile-but-usually-not movies.

For ten years I searched through record stores for the soundtrack to a film called Get Crazy. It was Allan Arkush's follow-up to his movie "Rock-n-Roll High School" and tells the fictionalized account of the last days of the Filmore, East. Well, shortly after finding the soundtrack,(which includes a super-rare Ramones song called "Chop Suey")in a used record store bin, I also read a review of the movie in "Killer B's". The fact alone that this book includes a segment for "Get Crazy" means it beats 99% of all movie crit tomes out there. Get it yesterday.

The only movie review guide to compare with Apel's work is "Leonard Maltin's Movie and Video Guide," which boasts more than 20,000 entries, and naturally by the sheer volume presents more chaff than wheat. I don't know about you, but I don't expect to live long enough or have the time to use all that information, whereas "Killer B's" has only 237 reviews of films, all of which are recommended; hence, you get all wheat and no chaff.

ok, so not all of us are movie critics. some of us seem to love not only the independent and foreign art house film, but enjoy an excursion into the "other side" of film. if you're one of us, then you're going to love this book. it will certainly help you in deciding which film to rent at your local video store when you've seen everything else you think or have been told has redeeming critical value. check out the descriptions, ratings, and comments from the author and you'll come away with some real gems to watch.....Bedazzled with Dudley Moore is one I found courtesy of this book. this is definitely a read and view book for the movie lover!

I dont mean to let my 3 star rating discourage anyone from reading this book. Its a good book, with utter sincerity from all indie film makers who participated in putting it together.
However, I felt that the amount of total information I got from reading this book, did not justify the price I paid for it.
Also, except for a few tidbits here and there, there was nothing that I couldnt have myself figured out once I started to think seriously of my movie making venture.

NYC filmmaker Kevin J. Lindenmuth asked 25 other low budget indy regional directors a series of questions and assembled the candid responses into ten chapters (on scripts, film schools, budgets, publicity, distribution...). Unlike some similar more self serving books by lone directors, I think this could be very useful if you think you're brave, foolish or talented enough to make your own feature.
A realistic and inspirational look into the film industry.

Lindenmuth's book is a comprehensive and straightforward insight into the independent film circuit. This book is the perfect guide for anyone getting into the film industry and needs the proper assistance of making your film. His book was the perfect tool on how to get started from the basic script to distribution. Lindenmuth discusses tape formats, camera rental, casting calls, working with actors and how the video box art can help to sell your final film. The book is very explanatory and the format makes it easier to read due to the organization. Not only do we receive insight from the director himself, but he interviews a handful of other independent filmmakers. The questions are the type of questions the beginning filmmaker, as myself, ponders when it comes to the stages of filmmaking. I have read many books on the making of films and one of my favorites was Robert Rodriguez, until now. Lindenmuth makes my goals of becoming a sucessful filmmaker realistic and attainable. He not once lets us feel we need millions of dollars to make some big Hollywood film. If you were to read one book on this subject, then read Lindenmuth's book.

This is a great book for the beginner. Being a novice at movie making I was amazed at all the choices and formats available. Throughout the book there is tons of information to help get you going in the right direction. Interviews abound with independent filmmakers relating to all aspects of movie making as well as some commentary on how they approached the task. The book seems to be slanted toward horror films but most of the info seems universal. There is a section discussing camera type pros and cons that is worth the cost of the book in itself. I was particularly happy that the info is current and the cameras talked about are not obsolete. Sets, actors, editing and even marketing are covered making this a very comprehensive and valuable guide.
This book was well worth the dough!

This book was extremely enlightening and inspirational to my friends and I. We want to make movies, but have had a tough time raising the bread to do so. After absorbing this tome, we're ready to go for it! This beast covers it all: from scripting, shooting, special effects, cost-effecient video formats, actors, and even self-distribution! We are psyched to join the ranks of go-getters like Lindenmuth, Tim Ritter, Ron Bonk, and Scooter McCrae! I only hope that our end results will be half as good as these pioneers of the limited-budget video forum. But no matter, we're gonna go for it! So if you're looking for motivation, short-cuts, or just an entertaining read on war stories of mavericks outside of the studio realm, check this book out. These are the guys that are carrying the drive-in movie torch into the new millenium!

This is what can only be described as a fantastic final chapter in the war of the ancients series. This book was so fantastic i was immersed into the warcraft universe so much everything else meant nothing. The characters are so well portrayed and the events that take place are spectacular. Richard knakk really sets the pace and the scene with his writing in this book.
The end was sudden and tragic however like every good fairy tale we are left with hope and purpose.

This book just goes to show you that the third book in a series written based on a Blizzard franchise is always the best one. A maxim I have found to be true. I digress. The Sundering takes place a short time after the events of The Demon Soul. The night elves find themselves in constant battle against the Burning Legion. One of the night elves' most relied upon sorcerers has defected to the side of the Legion and their situation looks grim. The book is packed tight with all sorts of depictions of grisly combat and quite remarkable detail. Richard A. Knaak definitely shows himself as one of the masters of writing massive battles (especially the final battles). This was one of the few books I actually sacrificed sleep for just to find out what was going to happen next. That is how addictive Knaak's writing style is. I also like the way he killed off several of his characters, the way he did it was neat. If you are a fan of the Warcraft series of games, you definitely need to read this book, if not the entire trilogy. This book is tied with Empire of Blood as the best final book in a trilogy.
Enough said... 5 stars.

By the end of "The Seeker" Maria had a vision of the alien ship that her friends had been searching for so many years. As events unfold in this book the search becomes even more urgent because Max has reached the age by which he must connect with the collective consciousness of his race- or die. The problem is, the teens are too far from "home" to do that without some crystals hidden on board the ship.
As the story develops the romances between Alex and Isabel and Maria/Michael also move along, not quite the way they did in the series. It also turns out that not only does their Adult alien friend have the ability to change his shape,as Nasedo did in the series, but that all of their race can do it- they can even shape shift their human friends and do so in their efforts to find the ship. Liz, posing as a guard, is the first to reach the secret hiding place where "Clean Slate" has the ship. Michael, Isabel and their friend enter the base, Isabel gets the crystals and Michael is captured. this sets up the storyline for book 5.
