This book presents the most informative and interesting story of Woody Allen- genius American/New York filmmaker- I have ever read. The book was first published in Great Britain in 1996. There are 10 English teachers at our high school, and we think this guide is the best. Our department chair recommended it and now several of us use it. With so many guides to writing research papers out there, it's good to know that there is at least one that gets the job done without a lot of fluff. This book covers everything you need to teach the research paper process. This would be especially helpful for a new teacher or a parent who is homeschooling because it covers everything from selecting a topic to proper citations to works cited pages, and other things you might not have thought about.

THE X LIST: THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF FILM CRITICS' GUIDE TO THE MOVIES THAT TURN US ON is an outstanding guide for any movie buff: primarily those 'x' rated. There's a lot of fluff and junk in the soft-core porn industry, as any viewer of the genre might now: THE X LIST is thus more important to such viewers than your ordinary movie list, as X films typically are not much discussed in general circles. Chosen for feature are erotic movies which have 'changed, challenged, enhanced or perverted' America's take on eroticism. Listings aren't just one-paragraph descriptions: they go into quite some depth and critical detail on what makes the film notable or erotic.

Expand Your Mind

Review Date: 2006-07-18
The book is broken up into three sections but don't look for a table of contents because there isn't one. The first screenplay starts with a murder that sets the tone as the reader follows the life of a little girl prodigy whose skills as a performer allow her to disguise herself in a very odd way. Her story of revenge is riddled with dark humor and urban intrigue. The second story starts on page 136 and is a clear cut parody of the Divine. The story is called One Man's Choice but in a deviation of circumstances the reader is given a choice at the end to which ending he/she may prefer. The final story and namesake of the book starts on page 256 and is based on events in the author's life. It is a metaphysical look at life with a existentialistic twist. The main character, despite the phenomenal situations that he experiences, is no wiser at the end of the story than he was at the beginning. However, there is a dedictation at the end of that story to all the unique individuals of this world who may or may not realize the effect that they have on others. Memoirs of a Geisha is such a beautifully written novel. I found it nearly impossible to put down and read until my eyes felt as if they were about to burst out of their sockets.

It's hard to believe it was written by a man, even harder still to believe that the character of Sayuri never really existed.

What a wonderful book is it! I waited a long time before deciding to read it and I was wrong! It is such a beautiful novel! With a delicate eye in a world so different and so easy to misunderstand! I really loved it and I have already offered to many friends as a gift that never failed.

Goodness me, there are plenty of reasons for me to despise this book. But, as it is pretty much a blatant Cinderella and I am a fairy tale freak, I read it and absolutely loved it. Every time I tried to critique I became once again raptured. The writing is beautiful, if it does focus mostly on conversation, but it still manages to greatly capture Sayuri's thoughts and look on the world. Frankly, I despised her as a character as she was utterly silly, but one could not help but be entranced by her story and those of the people she knew. If analyzed from the perspective of Cinderella, this is a Cinderella story that analyzes and tosses into cold reality every detail of the story. But it's all there, in a truly intoxicating story that explores the world of Japan. I don't know enough about the country to know the accuracy, but each detail was enjoyable just the same. Definitely a girly book, but something the hopeless romantic will always appreciate.

Loved it!

I have to say, that I am impressed with this book. It took me until the end of the book where the author stated that it is purely fiction to realize that what I had just read, in fact, had never happened! I was so sure that this story was an actual memoir, that I read the introduction over, the author's last note over, and then had to look online for anyone to tell me differently. I still can't believe it's not true. It was such a great story.

The story follows Chiyo (or Sayuri, as she later comes to be known) through her life as she strives to become a Geisha after being sold as a child. The emotion in the story is amazingly real, and the events that take place are enthralling. I like that Arthur doesn't take a dramatic turn in the book by having a character do something you wouldn't expect. It seems more like a real memoir that way.

This was an interesting book to read. If you have seen the movie and loved it, you will also love the book, though, I recommend reading the book first. This is a great opportunity to peak into the Japanese culture as it was before WWII. The culture is alive and deep in this book. Arthur Golden did his research pretty well. I loved being able to see life through the eyes of Geisha.

Book Is Always Better

So, like some other reviewers, I watched the movie first (and I wills ave the accolades for my review of the movie). However, after a watching it, I had an instant craving to read the book to see what was left out (cuz we all know that Hollywood loves to elave out the best parts of a book).

And, what I found within the pages completely led me to believe that I was right for wanting to read the book as well. While I will say that for the first time the film and the book are synonymous in character and detail. I must also add that the beuaty of the book was better as written work than on film. If you thought the movie was amazing, the book will prove breath-taking.

From the narrative voice, which is rich and full of personality and life, to the events themselves, the reader will be hard-pressed to put the book down. The move does an admirable job portraying the emotions and feelings of the narrator, but the book sits you front and center to everything Sayuri feels, thinks, breathes, and does. The reader navigates through every life moment with her like they were there--feeling the anger of her father's decision, the pain of relizing her dream of being a giesha may be crushed, and her determination as she plans how she will see the Chairman again. It's a wonder the reader doesn't set off on their own journey to meet Sayuri and the characters that enter and exit her world--they're that real.

I left the book feeling a better sense of completeness than I did with the movie (no spoilers here). And, I feel that Golden's research and time were well spent and permeate not only the landscape and places in the novel, but also the richness and depth of each character.

If you've seen the movie, please do yourself a favor and read the novel as well. You won't be disaapointed.

I'm a huge fan of fantasy and fiction novels, and this one is just great. I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone who is a lover of books, and who has ever wondered what would happen if the characters they loved so much came alive.

I have owned Inkheart for awhile and have put off reading it for other books that I have. Boy, was that a mistake! I finally decided to read it and I loved it!
The story is about a girl named Meggie who loves books. Her father, Mo, loves books as well. Their house is filled with them. Even though they both read to themselves, Meggie noticed her father has never read out loud to her. One night a dark stranger appears at their house. From there the book just keeps on going. There is so much more to the book. I don't want to create any spoilers for those who have not read it though. The main part of this story is that Meggie finds out her Dad can read people and objects right out of any book. The catch is that something from this world must replace what he reads out of the other world. Meggie father realized that this might just be as much of a curse as it is a gift.
The book was fast paced and an enjoyable read. My favorite part about it is the way Meggie, her father and her great aunt all have such a love and respect of books. That reminds me so much of me that I fell in love with the book from the beginning. I highly recommed this book!

Inkheart tells the tale of 12 year old Meggie, her bookbinder father, and their journey through books. Both Meggie and Mo (her father) have the magical gift of calling characters out of books. This well crafted fantasy appeals to young teens, who best like magical mystery and excitement. The main villain of the novel, Capricorn is described viciously, yet when push came to shove he was a flat and weak character. Mo and Dustfinger, another character pulled from the text, describe the wickedness of Capricorn and his men, which is very dark. But when the action is happening, the villains are easy to outsmart and defeat in the end. A captivating read for children, a bit predicatable for an adult reader.

What a great story!
This is quite the page-turner! I was driven to read more by both the action/adventure and the plot/conclusion. Both are excellently written! Funke's style of writing (and indeed the translation made by Anthea Bell) makes for a smooth and beautiful read.
Wonderfully drawn and very detailed characters fill this book from cover to cover, each character being unique and complete. The story is told from multiple viewpoints, which adds another interesting dimension to the story and plot.
The book doesn't contain many light-hearted chapters (as you would find in Harry Potter or Narnia) but the wonderful lead characters are such good people that the book is far from dark.
The whole idea of the story is beautiful and intriguing! And the quotes that begin each chapter are perfectly chosen.
I kept wondering if there were areas that Funke could have taken out to make the book shorter - but I couldn't really find anything that wouldn't mar the story in some way, and I was grateful there were as many pages to read as there were!
A wonderful read and an interesting story that I think has become a new favorite!

John Grisham has established himself as one of the premier American writers in the recent past. Almost everything he writes is gobbled up devoured by his fans and rightfully so. He has a great knack for drawing you in to the characters and then like a punch in the nose..he hits you with the hook. Time to kill already is a classic and will remain on the reading list for high schooler and collegiates for quite a while.

Predictable and Politically Correct

Review Date: 2008-02-13
This book is author John Grisham's first novel. It is also, naturally enough, his personal favorite.

"A Time to Kill" had an indifferent reception from publishers. It was subsequently given a more prestigious release after the best selling success of "The Firm" and "The Pelican Brief."

I would probably rate "A Time to Kill" with three and a half stars, if that option were available to me on this web site. It is not a bad book, but it is awfully derivative. If you have previously read Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird," much of the material in "A Time to Kill" is going to seem familiar to you. The time frame, the specific crime and the location have changed, but otherwise it is a short drive from a courtroom in segregated Alabama to a racist courtroom in Mississippi.

To put it another way, would you prefer watching the motion picture "In the Heat of the Night" with Rod Steiger or the weekly television series with Carroll O'Connor?

Enjoyable read

I read this book after others by Grisham and was pleasantly surprised.
It is different from his other books, but very enjoyable still. I
see that he has a sense of humor, which I did not detect in his
other books. I would say one of my favorites by this author.

Your Eyes Will Bleed as You Pour Through the Pages

Gwen Hailey calls her husband Carl Lee at work, tells him their daughter, ten-year-old Tonya is missing. Carl Lee isn't all that worried though, because his wife tends to be, well a little protective. However when he gets home he's met with the news that Tonya has been raped by a pair of redneck types named Billy Ray Cobb and Pete Willard. Tonya had been left for dead and Carl Lee is seeing red. He's African American and does not believe the rapists are going to get what they deserve. Though they're arrested, Carl Lee knows how it goes in the South, so he goes to the courthouse and blows away those young good old boys, then he gets himself a lawyer.

Attorney Jake Brigance takes the case, which gets plenty of media attention right from the get go. It also draws the attention of the Clan, who do their best to intimidate both Jake (they burn a cross on his yard) and the jurors. Carl Lee is looking at the gas chamber if he's convicted and many want it so, however, there are many who believe Carl Lee had been justified. Tension is running high in the Mississippi town of Clanton. Jake's wife is afraid for their daughter Hannah. His secretary is afraid, too. The town doesn't need this, but it's got it.

And you may not need the tension in this book, nor the graphic scene detailing what happened to Tonya, but you should read this book. This is John Grisham's best work, it's his first novel, too. Everything John Grisham writes tops the bestseller lists and they should, but this book, well they need a whole new list for this book. John Grisham puts you in the South at a tense time and paints a picture so true it'll make your eyes bleed as you pour through the pages. He's written a book about a time in the South that the South would love to forget about. We were a different people then, thank the Lord we're changing. We're not their yet, but we're getting there.

Before deciding to read this book, I have never wanted to actually sit down and watch the Fried Green Tomatoes movie. Now, however, I'm really looking forward for the chance to see it! I loved the complex setup of the story through the use of different narrators. I've heard numerous times that Evelyn Couch was the most disliked character. I, however, liked Evelyn and disliked Idgie! Yes, call me strange...

This was a wonderful read, though. I'm very glad I got the chance to read such a wonderful story, especially through the eyes of the dear Mrs. Cleo Threadgoode.

I saw the movie when I was very young (9 or 10) and remember loving it. I have not seen it since then and did not even know it was based on a book until recently, at which time I picked the book up at my local library and read it.

I was, well, a little disappointed.

I think maybe I need to see the movie again to see if I even like it now, as an adult, as much as I liked it as a child, but as for the book...it was just way too all over the place and simplistic for my taste. The timeline jumped around so much that half the time I wasn't even sure what decade the chapter I was reading was taking place in, and I didn't feel as if I got to truly KNOW any of the characters because of this.

I think that the book has some good messages, but all in all it just wasn't what I expected from what I remember feeling for the movie.

The Casual Use of the N Word takes away the Charm
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-12
It's a good book, don't get me wrong, but the use of the N word is a turn off. Even a nice little old lady was throwing it around. It's irksome as a black woman to read a book of white characters, most of them good guys using a word like that. Yes, it was the past, and prehaps people used it like it was your name. And I went to school where it was n word this and n word that, but still, it's distracting.
In some ways the movie is a bit better. That is a rariety. Perhaps because they don't say the N word constantly. The best thing about the book is the romance between Idgy and Ruth. The bee taming scene, and the main character evolving into a strong woman, but I must say it was done better in the movie than in the book. Perhaps because you have to have that whole empowered middle age woman thing to appeal to a broad audience of women.
You've got to love the characters and how they interact except for one, but does the dark skin boy have to be bad and the light skinned boy evil? The small hint of racism really brings down the quality of this otherwise good book which also has some mouth watering food.
