This is an enjoyable and calming book to read as a bedtime story. The illustrations are colorful and vibrant yet soft on the eye. The text is a rhyming lulling poem that reminds us of the simple things we can count on.

This book quickly became one of my 2-year-old son's favorites. The illustrations are astoundingly beautiful. The words are simple, poetic, and quietly moving. The concepts are easy to understand. The tone is deeply spiritual without being pedantic or preachy, and yet there is an emphasis on "family values"- friendship, family, work, and an appreciation for natural beauty woven throughout. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

In her usual lyrical style, Cynthia Rylant reminds us that all will be well as long as the important things in life are available: people who love us, pets curled up close, peach pie, and stars that shine. The rhyming text takes the readers through the year, outlining the constants that will come to pass: the stars will shine, flowers will bloom, birds will fly. And in her life-affirming worldview, Rylant reminds us that "there will be goodness...there will be grace." Beeke's soft watercolors illustrate family and friends and flowers and stars in all their colorful variety. This would be a lovely bedtime read-aloud -- or even a bedtime prayer -- for people of all ages.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! I received this book as a gift when my children were small, and we have been reading it every Christmas Eve since. Even my teenagers like to sit close to look at the vivid, inticate drawings as we read aloud the familiar words of the Christmas story. I have given it as a gift to many people, always with enthusiastic reports. I love that it shows Mary nursing, that the wise men are of varying hues, and I especially love the angels! When they were small, my kids would want it read over and over, and were engaged by the pictures for long periods of time. Get it in hardcover!

The illustrations in this book are beautiful. This is really a "heirloom book"! Mary is shown nusing baby Jesus, which I thought was a great statement. The passages per page are short enough for a 2-year-old to follow. Our family can highly recommend this book!

An Unscary Halloween Story
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-25
From the title, kids will know right away that the main character isn't your typical ghost. Though it's filled with Halloween sounds and imagery, this isn't a typical Halloween book either. This tale will become a Halloween staple because kids will relate more to the timid Teeny Tiny Ghost than to overbearing monsters of the usual sort. The author and illustrator don't hold back, though. The writing and pictures are vigorous and funny.

The clever, very funny and fun-loving illustrations in this cute Halloween book make a creative and refreshingly original story come to life. Meet the teeny, tiny ghost and his two teeny tiny black cats and join him at his school where he is trying unsuccessfully to learn the ropes of haunting. He howls and he yeowls, boos and whoo-ooes but he consistently succeeds only in scaring himself silly. He hears some suspicious sounds and sees some spooky lights and shadows on Halloween and when the teeny tiny black cats get scared he rises to the challenge, faces his own fears and lets loose with his best, bone-chilling racket to scare away the spooks. A wonderful revelation results! Join in the fun and share these adorably comic illustrations with your children this Halloween. It's sure to become a favorite.

I bought this book for my 3 year old son last year during Halloween season based on the cover's artwork. It has proven to be very entertaining because of the Halloween excitement and the eye catching artwork. No matter what time of year, my son always comes back to this book as a true favorite when it comes to choosing a bedtime story. The "eye filling" illustrations along with the easy to read text never fails to entertain or keep his interest.

My daughter was sent this book for Thanksgiving two years ago. She loves cats so it appealed to her - but its a very sweet tale about how the cats work together to grow and harvest their food and then how they prepare it and share it; all done in a rhyming mannner. This is a great story.

This book is beautifully illustrated. I shared it with my sons first grade class and they loved it so much I donated it to the class. It tells the story of the Nativity as well as the part the 3 Kings play. I especially liked the fact that the people in the story are depicted True to life as African & Arab people. Its refreshing!

Written with such zest for family participation during the Jewish Holiday of Passover! Lively pictures help weave the story of Bubbie's family as they perform the traditional tasks for Passover. Educational and fun at the same time! A real treat for young and old, which has always been the true test of great literature. "Too Many Cooks" is a great addition to your personal library collection.

I like this pleasant book because it's a book about friendship and companionship. My favorite part is when puddle the pig goes all around town for a present for his buddy Toot when he could be doing something else instead. Soon through friendship he finds the right gift. This book is filled with loving, touching pages. That's what makes it the best!

The best children's books manage to delight your children and keep you amused -- even on the 55th reading. The Toot and Puddle series does this time and time again, with beautiful illustrations full of mood, detail, and humor, and prose that never panders to its young audience. They give the reader the feeling of peeking into a fully imagined world -- and the wonderful anticipation of the stories to come!

It would be hard to top the reviews of this book, so in leiu of one-upping them, I'll simply lay my $.02 on the table.

Toot & Puddle: A Present for Toot is an amazingly well done book. Reminescent of other famous pals-- Bert & Ernie, Oscar & Felix-- it's clear that the two have a very strong friendship tempered by the occasional bout of frustration.

It's going to be Toot's birthday, and what CAN you get for the Pig Who Has Everything?? Puddle, in his travels about town and windowshopping, finds WONDERFUL things that HE would like, but isn't sure that it would please TOOT. Time and time again he finds things that HE would like to have, but realizes that he's searching for a present for his friend, not himself (a wonderful watercolor illustration is of Toot eating breakfast while Puddle slings on his backpack to head out the door for another round of shopping).

The message is simple: it's the giving, not the gift, it's the thought that counts, and when present shopping, you should get goodies for the person you're BUYING FOR, not for yourself, no matter how many things fly up at you yelling, "BUY ME! BUY ME!"

The watercolors are some of the most vivid, detailed and comfortable ones I've seen in a career of reading children's books. This comes highly recommended.
