I bought the Emanuel for property and liked it so much I got this one and the one for substantive criminal law. While I didn't use the crim law one so much (terrific prof), this was absolutely indispensable. We had so much reading in that class that there was no way I could have (a) understood it all on my own or (b) had time to read Tribe or any other hornbook, helpful as they may be.

As with all the Emanuels, this one is organized very well, packing a lot of info in and still making it readable. I recommend periodically surveying the summarized outline at the beginning; then look up your assigned cases in the index and read enough to give you a feel for the issues before you read the cases. Unless your prof is going for breadth and not depth, you won't get through half of this bad boy, but what you do cover will be in here.

Best of all, this supp is very accurate. I regularly brought it to class to refer to, and I thought I had stolen my prof's lecture notes. It clarifies ambiguous doctrines, while appropriately throwing up its hands when commenting on the Court's stance would be guesswork.

I hear all sorts of great things about Tribe, but this was the bomb for me, a lot cheaper and more versatile.

Emanuel once again proves to be the savior for law students. This outline takes otherwise convolted ideas (i.e. the equal protection clause, freedom of speech, and justiciability to name a few) and presents them in a very readable bullet-point fashion, pinpoint accuracy and with crystal clear clarity. This outline will become a surrogate for your text, classes and even your professor. (I know it was for me). This is a "must-buy" for all law students. Buy this book NOW!!!

Emmanuel is the greatest. Law School is generally not the most fun experience of one's lifetime (although it's a million times more fun than working in a law firm!), but using Emmanuel Outlines can make it so much easier and more interesting. I know, I used his outlines and graduated with honors. Thank you Steven Emmanuel.

This book saved my grade in Constitutional Law. A week before the final I was so confused and lost in the material and I was freaking out! I bought this book as a last hope at saving my grade, and not only did it save my grade, I got one of the best grades in the class!! This is the BEST supplement I have seen yet that explains and ties everything together. I would recommend it a thousand times over to all law students who need a little (or a lot) of help with Constitutional Law.

Ritch Rand made a hat for me in 1994 and I'm still wearing it today. His book is like his hats- authentic, of the excellent quality and dedicated to the history of the Old West. If you believe that a hat says something about the person who wears it, if you are of the opinion that a hat is more friend and traveling companion than garment, then this book is for you. Read the book then get yourself a hat!!

This coffee-table type book contains a detailed history of the cowboy hat, specific information about how to choose a hat, measure properly for fit, clean it, store it, travel with it, and much more. Even discusses "hat hair!" Numerous historical photos show the development of the cowboy hat across the west and around the world. Exceptional photos of famous hats (who doesn't recognize Festus' Gunsmoke hat or Hoss Cartwright's 10-gallon monster on sight?) and great hat-wearers such as James Garner, the Duke, Henry Fonda and Clint Eastwood. A must for Western lovers, cowboy buffs, and everyday folks who own their own Stetson and want to know how to keep it nice!

This excellent collection of poster images from close to 100 years of Western movies was originally sent to me as part of a "grab bag" collection of poster books from Mr.Hershenson. (For the uninitiated; Bruce Hershenson bills himself as "The Largest Movie Poster Dealer in the World". Considering the incredible energy he devotes to the hobby, the quality of his service and his merchandise, it's a tough claim to dispute.)I was never a huge fan of posters from this genre, but this book made me a believer. The images, especially from the pre-1940 movies which comprise much of the book, (movies right up to the publication date are covered), are absolutely mind-boggling in their lush coloring and craftmanship. The printing quality is easily as good as humongous art books that cost 4 times as much as this reasonably priced tome. I now buy all of Bruce's books, regardless of their subject matter, as there are always images that interest me, and I was especially excited about the second volume of COWBOY POSTERS, which is also highly recommended by this reviewer. The problem with Bruce's books is that as I keep falling in love with all these new posters, I keep spending more money on acquiring the originals for my collection. Fortunately, Bruce has these weekly auctions on eBay where I can get them at reasonable prices....hey, wait! Do you think there's a connection here? Hmmm... A great volume in a grand ongoing series that belongs in the collection any fan of movie poster art or cinema in general.

A must-have for every Western Movie Fan

I found the book both entertaining and informative. The photography and description of the material is excellent. As an amatuer historian on the subject, I found it to be educational as well as concise and pointing out subtle items which could have been overlooked by the casual observer. It is one of those books the reader can either read from cover to cover or open anywhere and dig right in.

It covers all aspects of turn-of-the-century attire and accouterments from the working cowboy to the Wild West Show performers. Excellent and entertaining.

A wonderful instructional book!

This is truly a terrific book on zhostovo technique. Ms. Redick covers everything from choosing your tools (brushes, palette, paints, etc.), to the final coat of varnish - and everything in between is covered in exquisite detail. Heather explains everything (and I mean everything!)in very fine detail. Each step or technique is very descriptively written and fully accompanied by loads of photos, so that one only has to concentrate and follow step-by-step.
Many (if not most) painting books assume that the reader will understand what is meant by "put your word or technique here". I find that Ms. Redick makes no assumptions about what we do or do not understand by a given word or description. There is text and accompanying photos to describe pretty much anything and everything that this book covers. It does a very thorough job of covering everything from choosing colors, blending colors and how to paint each type of stroke. Every flower and leaf is broken down into stroke-by-stroke description and picture. Given that the reader is motivated to put in at least a moderate effort and amount of practise, it is what I would describe as a "no fail" painting book.
I most surely hope that she plans to do another!

After studying Zhostovo painting in Ontario, Canada, with Heather, I found this book to be of great benefit to refresh my learned skills. It has explicit instruction on leaves, flowers, and designing your own linework borders which are very beautiful, yet the guidelines are easy to construct using a compass. The book is easy to follow and her technique is of the finest. You will master brush control if you follow her detailed instruction on strokes. How to load a brush is detailed in depth and no stone is left unturned in this area. I can feel the rhythm and movement in the clear illustrated pictures. A great book to study from...a great teacher to show you how!

She provides instructions on composing your own designs, and provides a range of projects for all levels of difficulty, and on plenty of surfaces. I wish she would have included some history of the Zhostovo style, and perhaps some more patterns. Overall I've had great success with her techniques.

Excels in Discussion of Cuts, Fancy Colors, Enhancements.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-05
Antoinette Matlins' buying guides for jewelry and gemstones are excellent, and "Diamonds" is no exception. Perhaps because she is a gemologist consultant, Ms. Matlins excels in anticipating what consumers want to know and makes sure her guides answer those questions. The paucity of color photographs, which are limited to a 12-page insert, may be "Diamonds" weakness. People like to look at pictures of sparkling gems, but the abundant information in the guide is easy to understand without photographs. And photos are probably less essential in a diamond guide than in a guide of colored gemstones, since there are fewer varieties. Many of the most interesting and popular cuts are pictured, so the essential photos are included.

After explaining how to examine a stone through a loupe, Matlins moves on to the meat of the guide in Part 2: There is a chapter for each of the 4Cs: cut, color, clarity, carat weight. Illustrations of ideal cut, different cuts, faulty cuts, and how they affect price are especially interesting. The chapter on color includes discussion of color grading systems and the HPHT process to improve color. These are followed by chapters on diamond grading reports and how that information affects price, and common types of misrepresentation and what you can do to avoid being misled, including discussion of fake diamonds and how to detect them. One chapter is dedicated to comparing prices for round, brilliant-cut diamonds, so that we can see the relative effects of the 4Cs on price. Another chapter addresses color and color enhancement in fancy diamonds, with a retail price guide and sample gem grading reports.

The last 2 parts of "Diamonds" include descriptions of common diamond settings, advice on what to ask when shopping for a diamond, what to consider, and what to get in writing on your bill of sale, as well as advice on finding a good jeweler, gemologist, appraiser, or insurer, caring for diamonds, and a little about the Gemprint diamond identification system. This book provides more detail about diamond cuts, enhancements, and how to detect a fake than Fred Cuellar's "How to Buy a Diamond" guide. Antoinette Matlins' approach is more hands-on, emphasizing the consumer looking at diamonds through a loupe, whereas Cuellar expects that you will rely on machines to analyze the diamonds but offers more guidance on the shopping experience itself -guidance that is inextricably entwined with promotion for his own business, however.

I have most of Antoinette Matlins books and I give them all five stars. If you are interested in learning about or are planning to buy a diamond for any reason, I would read this book first!!
I recently purchased the book "Diamond Buying Guide" and had not realized how involved and complicated it is to understand the differences in the evaluation of diamonds. A particular diamond I thought was a great deal before reading this book, however, I learned was not a good deal at all. The purchase would have been a poor investment. Thanks to this book I gained enough confidence and knowledge to explore the diamond market and I purchased a beautiful diamond ring for my wife. I had the diamond ring appraised by a reputable appraiser and I felt even better when she informed me that my purchase was as represented and the purchase was at a very good price. The appraiser was impressed with how much I new about diamonds. I was proud to inform her it was because of this book. The book is easy reading, informative, and was helpful to me. Thanks!

Every sculptor should own this book, and it's really the only one you need. Meilach's volume makes a good supplement, but really that's all it is; Liebson's book easily stands on it's own as the standard reference.

Why? Almost the entire book is devoted to the craft and mechanics of carving stone. Liebson looks like someone's dad, and writes like it, too -- this book eschews all discussion of "art" in favor of simple, practical advice on "how to do it." From selecting a stone and tools to using and caring for those tools to finishing, polishing, mounting, and displaying your sculpture, even to gaining exhibitions and marketing your work, Liebson covers absolutely everything you need to know to get started, and to keep going. I've been carving for over five years now, and I still refer constantly to this book.

I am very picky at buying books because of the high shipping costs to South America, sometimes as high as the cost of a book.
I purchased Direct Stone Sculpture because it was well praised at an art forum by highly renowned artists. After reading the book, I must say that I fully agree with them. It is worth reading and enjoying the photographs of many works. It teaches carving and use of carving tools.
I am not only learning to sculpt but also appreciating art made by great "stoners" at the Sculpture Gallery of the book.
The book has many photographs of the carving process, and shows detailed views of many hand and power tools that I found useful.
I think this book should have a special place at any home library even at non carvers' shelves.

After reading the two previous reviews, I purchased this book on sculpture and was surprised to find that "soapstone" carving was dismissed from the very beginning of the book. Liebson makes clear that he does not even allow "soapstone" in his classroom--on the grounds that (his opinion)it is dangerous to the sculpter's health, and also crumbles when worked.
Since I am new to sculpture, this was disappointing because "soapstone" was the only material I had worked with, and hoped this book was going to give me some valuable advise. Beyond Liebson's dismisal of "soapstone" the book is everything that those other reviews said it was. Tools, methods and merchandising are all covered with ample illustrations. I hope to take full advantage of Liebson's valuable lessons once I have graduated up to limestone and the like.

This book has aroused in me a great deal of enthuiasm for the process of shaping stone and the creation of art forms out of stone. Liebson is an authority on the subject and he writes extremely well. Manufacturers and suppliers of tools and stone are listed in an index. A list of recommended tools is provided as well as a fairly comprehensive description of how to best utilize these tools. The photographs are interesting and informative. An inspirational book. Of the three books on stone sculpture which I've read, this is by far the best.

In one very special way, I had a wonderful childhood. My parents shopped at a small grocery store that had an extensive rack of comics. The owners were very nice people who allowed me to read the comics while my parents bought groceries. Since my father also bought his mother's groceries, I had plenty of time to read (devour) them all. Therefore, I was able to read the original issues of most of the superheroes that erupted from the fertile mind of Stan Lee at Marvel Comics. When I opened this book, I recognized the cover of the first issue of the X-Men series.
The early sixties were a time of great political uncertainty and scientific advancement. Lee used both of them to great advantage in developing the idea of the mutant with great powers. By developing the character of Professor X who gathered together many mutants at his school, a crime fighting team known as the X-Men was developed. The group has changed a great deal over the years, both in appearance and in membership. This is a history of that group and young readers can also learn something about the world. For example, it is noted that the bones of the winged X-Man Angel are hollow, just like those of real birds. Other relevant science facts, such as details about water freezing in the section about Ice-Man relate the powers of the X-Men to the physical laws of the universe.
I strongly recommend this as a book for young readers. The topic is one that they will find of great interest, it is very well written at the appropriate level and they can learn something about the world. Perfect for the young mind.

This easy to read book aimed at young readers serves as a perfect introduction for those unfamiliar with the original X-Men team: Cyclops, Marvel Girl, the Beast, Iceman, and Angel all studying under the tutelage of Charles Xavier, aka Professor X. The book also talks about Magneto and the first adventure that the X-Men took part in. The classic team has taken many changes over the years, but few teams will rival the original. Great introduction to the original X-Men team.

It also gives some info about other X-Men like WOlverine and some of their recent and former enimes like Juggernaut, and Quicksilver. One thing I enjoyed about this book is it had a lot of pics. from old and recent comics. Overall this is a pretty good book!

We are one of the doll hospitals listed in the book. We have already received a call from Louisiana from another doll hospital that was looking for Margon eyes. Also, we have a web site, and when we receive requests for the "closest doll hospital to where I live", we use the Doll Hospital Directory to answer their inquiry. We foresee using this book as a very helpful resource in our business. Every person who does any doll repair should have a copy.

I was very impressed with the concise information. I used it right away. I have a doll I wanted to have repaired. Several doll hospitals sent me repair information. One doll hospital even sent me photos of previous repairs. It's a necessity for anyone who collects dolls.

ULTIMATE NECESSITY FOR ALL DOLL COLLECTORS!

It is nice to have other doll hospitals to refer customers to that do not wish to mail their dolls for repair, especially knowing that they produce objects of fine workmanship. My name is Heather M. Sainsbury and my hospital, THE CHINA BISQUE DOLL HOSPITAL & GIFT SHOP IN ARCADIA, FLORIDA is listed in this excellent reference guide. The before & after section is amazing! You can look for pictures on my composition restoration there. I am honored to be included in this book, all that are listed are specialists. A SPECIAL UPDATE: THIS PAST YEAR I HAD THE HONOR OF WINNING 1ST. PLACE IN PROFESSIONAL COMPOSITION RESTORATION, BY THE DOLL DOCTORS ASSOC. AND HONORABLE MENTION IN PERIOD COSTUMING AND WIGS. Add this book to your collection it will become one of your prized possessions. EMAIL ADDRESS: dolldoctor@desoto.net Dollingly Yours, Heather M. Sainsbury C.D.D

This book is easy, fun to read AND it gave me a lot of doll doctors to speak with about repairs. It made getting the doll fixed so easy. Just the book I needed!

I loved the before and after photos of all the antique dolls that have been restored. Having this book has opened up a new world of collecting for me - now I can collect older or worn dolls and I know they will be as good as new. This book taught me alot and I reccommend it to any doll lover.
