I'm 15 and all I can say is this book is really, really cool/excellent/awesome etc...from pre-zeppelin days to post zeppelin solo projects and the reunions, it's totally comprehensive, I agree wholeheartedly with the other reviewers - it's cool if you have even one Zeppelin Bootleg, and it's also interesting to see what they have to say about the shows the newly released live material was taken from. My dad saw Zeppelin twice so it was cool for him to find his shows.

So if you saw Zeppelin live, have any live recordings whatsoever, or are just curious, I highly recommend this book. It'd be nice if they came out with a new version making note of the material that's come out since it's been released, but even if they don't, I still feel it's a totally complete edition.

For anyone who has a modist size Zeppelin collection of live recordings this book is a must, It has an incredible breakdown of hundreds of shows including track lists and commentary on the play quality as well as remarks on Robert Plants witty comentary between songs. I found myself going back and listening to many of my bootlegs to see how the author's opinion of concerts compared to mine. It was also nice because It helped straighten out some of the songs from the compelation discs I have, correcting the perpatraitors generally incorrect slipsheets and liner notes.

Excellent and detailed history :setlists, photos, and more.

This book is a dream come true for any Zep fan. The set lists and descriptions of every Led Zeppelin performance are great. If you are not sure exactly when or where you saw that Zep concert, this book has the information you need. Loads of pictures of the band, venue posters, backstage passes and more. Looks great on the coffee table too.

Dave Lewis and Simon Pallett have provided readers with a treasure: a look at every known live performance of the world's greatest rock band, Led Zeppelin. The book is full of reports of what, where, and when the band played, how good the concert was, concert facts, and many samples of the wisdom of Robert Plant. They even recommend the best bootlegs, perfect for us die-hard Zepp fans. The authors also include innumerable concert photos, many of which don't appear in other books. Any Zeppelin collection is incomplete without this book.

This is a great book. I so badly could not put it down that I read the whole book in 3 days. I do not read a lot, but had to read this book for a Legal class I am taking in college. I am so glad we had to read it. I would recommend it to anyone. I met Bob Gust, the author of the book and he is just as funny in person. GREAT BOOK!

Hey - this is a really good read. Author has great insight into human behavior and motivation. The story is woven around a creative legal situation, one that will absolutely not be found elsewhere. If you like legal fiction, you will very much enjoy this book. Great character development. I think I've met some of these people and really knew them by the end.

This book delivered on its promise to break out of the legal thriller mode by adding humor, romance, and poignancy. Amazingly, the facts underlying the main case actually happened in Northern Minnesota--while the book takes some nice twists to tie up all the open questions about what really happened. At times, the story is laugh-out-loud funny as it shifts back and forth from Minneapolis to the Iron Range in Northern Minnesota. That does not detract from the intrigue, however, and at other times it is the suspense that keeps the reader turning the pages. The romantic subplot is more than a diversion, as it ties in with the legal dispute that drives the story. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

i've added 3-4 pieces to my repertoire out of this book and i frequently find myself reaching for it to practice sight reading. a couple times i've heard a piece i've really enjoyed on a CD from the library or something, decided to learn it, and been pleasantly surprised to find that it's in the book.

the hyperbolic prose on the cover is always good for a laugh.

I have owned this book for years and have returned to it again and again. This book is for the person that can play classical guitar and wants to develop a repertoire. The pieces range from the baroque to the modern era and Spanish pieces. If you are on a budget and want to get maximum bang for your buck I suggest this book. Over 200 pieces of pure sheet music from Back, Sor, Carcassi, Tarrega, Mozart and more. Most pieces I would place at an intermediate difficulty level. But there are some pieces at beginner level and some at advanced level so you will get a good progression as you get better. Get the Plastic comb version so it lays out on your music stand easily. I have had this book for ten years now and it is still in perfect shape because of the plastic comb.

Craig Wright not only provides us with a nicely packaged history of music, composers, and culture, but also gives us a peak into the personal lives within the societies of these periods. Each chapter contains excellent listening exercises to be used with works on the included CD and there are excellent illustrations and photographs that "bring you back" to each age of music. I recommend it as a general reference source for accomplished musicians, and as a nice guide for all classical music fans.

When I signed up to take Music Appreciation I was a bit nervous. Though I have grown up around music and musicians, I have never enjoyed "music class." I was pleasantly surprised by the conversational and topical way this book was written. It is interesting and informative regardless of your level of music understanding or proficiency. I thoroughly enjoyed both the listening exercises and the composer biographies.

Wright's book is a great introduction to the Western tradition, and a fair introduction to the world's music as a whole.

I know that there are cheaper alternatives out there, especially "The Vintage Guide to Classical Music," which I also recommend. But in this case, the CDs are worth the extra money. They correspond with the listening exercises in the book, and before long you really can tell an oboe from a french horn, a cello from a, well, a tuba, and so on. You learn to recognize and pay attention to meter, key, etc.... You really get on your way to understanding classical music, from which genuine appreciation can grow.

He also gives a fairly solid introducion to music as a whole, not only the classical Western "art music" tradition, but jazz, blues, rock, world music, and so on.

I can say that, to my knowledge, no other book out there does that.

I don't think any introduction is needed before this book; it can be the first you ever read on music even if you have no background whatsoever. The book to follow up this is, IMO, Fred Plotkin's "Classical Music 101" and Copland's classic, "What to Listen For in Music."

I learned a lot from this book and his course, which I failed when I was in college--evidently, attendance was mandatory after all! And I thought the teaching assistant having a crush on me would help.... Shame on me!

A new preface by the author graces the pages of Louie Louie: The History & Mythology Of The World's Most Famous Rock N Roll Song. While it's hard to see how any song, however famous, could earn an entire book discussion, once you delve into Dave Marsh's Louie Louie, with its intrigue, high drama, and twists and turns, it's hard to see what took so long for the full tale to come to light - and yes, it earns its own book. This new edition provides a new preface by Marsh as it covers the complexities of a song which involved even the FBI.

The Foundations of Christianity and the Tests of True Grace
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-06
Here is a God-centered exposition set that does not use any Greek words, nor difficult jargons. It is layman-friendly, but solid, powerful, heart-and-soul-searching by which I have been greatly blessed. Though the audio version of Dr. Jones' sermons are available online through their recording trust website, but due to poor-quality technology, considering these were recorded in the 1930's and 40's, I tend to lean toward the text version for clarity purposes.

The first epistle of John contains some redundancies to emphasize how exceedingly important the points being repeated are to ensure the audience truly understands and embraces them; namely, the doctrines of the Lord Jesus Christ, who he is, his nature, his accomplishment on the cross, as well as the goal of Christian life, that is, a joyful "fellowship with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ". It exposes the reality of Christians, who are "of God" living in a fallen world that "lies in wickedness", the reality of spiritual warfare against 'the world', 'the flesh' and 'the devil' within which false doctrines are included. John, often called "The Apostle of Love" also covers exquisitely the test of the existence of true grace in a person by hammering over and over the importance of embracing the right doctrines, keeping the commandments, loving the brothers. Pastor Jones clarifies several times, from the redundant nature of the epistle, the true meaning of the Apostle's exhortations, being aware of the danger of the two extremes resulting from a misinterpretation, whether intentionally or not; namely the antinomianism and legalism or perfectionism, as well as the false doctrines that are still pertinent today, particularly mysticism, which I believe the Pantecostal denominations need to heed. Some verses that Dr. Jones preached are particularly encouraging to me, among which are when he covers what the "world" means in ch.2 v. 15-16, the test of a Christian in ch.5 v.19, idolatry in ch.5 v.21, in addition to the exposition on some parts that I had a hard time understanding, as in ch.3, v.6-9, 20, and ch.5 v. 16.

I can tell Pastor Jones is the kind of preacher I wish I had the privilege sitting under. Though I may not have the preaching experience of what Prof. JI Packer describes as "with the force of electric shock, bringing to at least one of his listeners more of a sense of God than any other man" but I would agree with Pastor John Piper's comment that "many of us have felt this shock even through the written form of Lloyd-Jones' sermons."

There are several tests as to whether one is a Christian, and it would be wise for a person to examine their profession with referance to the true doctrine of Biblical assurance. The Apostle John wrote these things that we may know we have eternal life and a Christian should know how they stand with the Lord, and the style and careful detail of MLJ unfolds the message that was inspired by The Holy Spirit even for us today .

Beethoven's string quartets are basic for any music lover's library. Beethoven wrote string quartets throughout his composing life, and they reflect his evolving art. Never resting on his laurels, Beethoven continually grew artistically until the end.

It is difficult to label Beethoven as primarily a symphonist, chamber music composer, or piano composer. Practically every ensemble and form he used he produced masterpieces that reflect not only the music he wrote, but the music he wrote within the ensemble he chose. His music does not transcribe well at all.

A music lover needs to be acquainted with pieces from each of the ensembles to have any kind of grasp on the monumental influence that Beethoven has had on western music. Perhaps a good beginning would be the piano sonatas, but the string quartets have to have a place also.

From the early quartets to the last quartets, the amount and variety of music in the quartet opus alone is astounding. Like the other genres he composed in, some of his best music is in the string quartets.

One of the best ways to get the most out of this music is to follow along in the score. It is a good way to learn to follow more than one staff of music at a time, and is a good primer that can lead to full orchestral score reading. And the music...incredible!

A ton of music, a pittance of a price. Serious music lovers, take the hint! Highly recommended!

Perhaps the best bargain in music ever...

Not every Dover score is a gem; some are merely reprints of earlier editions complete with the typographical errors that didn't get caught the first time around. But this edition of Beethoven's complete string quartets is of excellent quality, and for the price it may well be the best bargain in music ever. The music is incredibly important--superb pieces by one of the most gifted people to ever live. That all the quartets are included allows the student of these works to trace Beethoven's stylistic development in a single volume from the early quartets rooted in the Classical tradition through those absolutely innovative late quartets, which combined Baroque contrapuntal and formal elements with Romantic harmonies and Beethoven's own unique sense of rhythm and drama. (In addition to the originally published version of the final quartet with the new final movement suggested by his publisher, the Grosse Fuge is included also.) I recommend to all my music students and especially my composition students that they get these pieces and study them throughout their lives. I can honestly say that I have learned more from these quartets than from any other, similar body of music literature by a single composer; and even as a composer of twenty-first century music I am continuously educated and inspired by them.

A MUST

I bought this book when it first came out in the very early 90's. Madonna looks gorgeous in the photos. All of the photos are beautifully shot and Madonna looks fabulous! I was the biggest Madonna fan back then and loved this book to death. now, pushing 30, I am still in love with this book because the photos are so amazing!

You won't be disappointed! I think the best photo is the one where she's kissing the mirror. Great photographic techniques!

Madonna's most glamourous photographs

The photographs in this book capture the "glamour" Madonna perfectly. The pictures have a very crisp feel to them, at times verging on remote; Madonna's glamour shots, though largely reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe in this book, do not have the same "inviting" allure that Marilyn had. I suppose this is because it is unmistakable that Madonna is a powerful woman who must always be "in charge" and is in complete control of her career and her image, whereas Marilyn Monroe projected an air of vulnerability for which Madonna is probably without the capacity. But Madonna is still a beautiful and at times "exotic" creature.

Several pictures in this book had previously been published in magazines, the cover shot, for example, was once the cover for Life magazine. Many pictures from that same photo shoot are reproduced here, with the most touching being the "group hug" between Madonna and about seven siblings. A few out-takes from the "Like a Virgin" album cover photo shoot are included in this book as well.

The era of Madonna's career that is covered in this book is somewhat small, considering that she has now been in the public eye for nearly 20 years. All these pictures seem to be from the the years 1984 to 1987.

Lots of great pictures

The book isn't very long and contains very few pages with actual words on it, but I didn't buy it for a story, I bought it for pictures of Madonna. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it was made near the end of 1987, so it only has pictures and information on Madonna from 1982-87. In the back portion of the book it does however have a short year by year biography on her. The pictures are black and white or colored. Many of them are from her different concerts. The book also includes some information on the earlier movies Madonna starred in such as Who's That Girl? and Shanghi Surprise. There are alot better books on Madonna that you could get, but for the price this is a great book. The pictures are beautiful and it is a welcome addition to my Madonna collection.
