This is one of those books I can't recommend highly enough if you love old Hollywood or the flamboyant architecture and graphic design of Hollywood in the 20's - 50's. I picked it up on a cut-out table in New York about 10 years ago and have come to appreciate it as one of the best books in my library - in fact it's one of those books that is always getting borrowed from friends who are graphic designers or work at ad agencies looking for inspiration.

Jim Heimann deserves much praise for assembling what is obviously a huge labor of love with lots of great photos and illustrations that you will never see anywhere else - everything from cocktail napkins and matchbooks to beautiful interior photography and paparazzi pics of the stars at play.

Also I'd like to disagree with the review - I actually found the writing in the book to be pretty engaging. It's fairly straightforward and to the point., luckily since there is a lot of history to cover.

Anyway it's an amazing book that I would highly recommend.

With essays by Snyder herself, Michael Joyce, and Johndan Johnson-Eilola, this edited collection offers a range of perspectives on everything from email to critically reading hypertext to educating children in electronic literacy. Good companion to foundation texts like Landow's volumes Hypertext and Hypertext 2.0.

If you want to get to the scholarly bones of the origins of the civil war and move beyond the simplistic moral debates, this is the book for you. Simply a top rate book by one of America's top rate scholars. Read only if you are serious about understanding the historical roots of the war.

Peacekeeping On The Plains: Army Operations In Bleeding Kansas by Tony R. Mullis (Assistant Professor of History, United States Air Force/Air Command and Staff College, Montgomery, Alabama) examines a violent microcosm of American history that served as a precursor to the civil war. Examining the useage of the army to conduct police and peacekeeping duties in the newly formed Kansas and Nebraska territories, Peacekeeping On The Plains offers a meticulous analysis of facts and records, regarding the true story of human greed, desperation, ruthlessness, and military efforts to contain potential riots with a strictly scholarly tone. Highly recommended, especially for American history and reference shelves.

Reads Like Fiction, But It's A True Story ! Excellent !!
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 1999-09-16
I've lived in Wisconsin for over 20 years, but never heard of John Dietz until I happened upon this book while searching the Amazon database. Anyone interested in U.S. history of this century, particularly big business/big government vs. "the little guy" will find this book fascinating. There can be no doubt that history does repeat itself: Waco, Ruby Ridge, et. al. are just late 20th century repeats of what has come earlier. I might also add that the book presents a very graphic picture of what pioneer life was like in the deep woods of northern Wisconsin, as late as 1910. Don't be too suprised if Hollywood makes a movie based upon this book about John Dietz and his family. It reads like fiction, but it's a true story. Well done, Mr. Landers!!

Marsilio Ficino the Florentine Platonist: On the Immortality of the Soul
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-28
Thanks to the efforts of a team of brilliant scholars, we now have this most remarkable work, On the Immortality of the Soul, rendered for the first time in a clear and direct English translation. Now this superlative summation of the Platonic Theology was penned by the founder of the Platonic Academy of Florence, Marsilio Ficino, who was, by all means, an outstanding philosopher and a devoted Catholic priest. Furthermore, it must be noted that Ficino's work is the culmination and first-fruits of some two-thousand years of speculative thought, respectively within traditions Pagan and Christian, as well as Eastern and Western. Yet the main currents of his Theology of the Soul flow primarily from Plato/Augustine, from Aristotle/Aquinas and frequently through Plotinus and the Neoplatonists, yet very seldom through the Pre-Socratics, the Magi and Averroes/Avicenna. It must be remembered that, in light of all Ficino's eclecticism, the author's aim was to combat neo-skepticism while at the same time producing a well-rounded and fundamentally orthodox Theology of the Soul for the whole of Christendom. Now it would be superfluous to provide a summary of these six volumes in a single review; and this is even true of this, the second volume. The scope of this work is extraordinarily broad and every detail is so profound and important that neglecting any part of it would be to neglect the whole. But a short comment on the second volume will have to suffice: Ficino regarded the soul as belonging to the third essence of Diety [=Universal or Primary Soul], where particular souls derive their existence and find their ultimate existence and final rest in that very original/universal essence alluded to above. All souls then being born of an incorporeal, eternal, divine nature are necessarily incorporeal, sempieternal and by participation [=by exemplifying civic and contemplive virtues], capable of becoming divine or godlike. Therefore, all souls are immortal by nature but not all are blessed and godlike. Nothing is said of a Hades or netherworld in this volume since Fincio's goal here is to simply demonstrate that both good and bad souls are necessarily immortal. Overall it may be said that the reader who ventures through the Platonic Theology of Marsilio Ficino, will be captivated by its style, elated by its loftiness and charmed by the arcane and mystic elements which enliven the text. [for more on Ficino, see the review posted for *volume one]

Pretty darn good for a promotional book
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-24
This book is currently being used for the Lt's promotional exam in Houston, Texas. As promotional books, it is pretty useful. The text covers all of the topics that a supervisor/ manager should know (Management Styles/Leadership Theory/Communications, etc..) without going into too much depth as some texts do. There is enough material to make it challenging, but what is important to me is that after the test is over, there still is worth to this book. They list resources, ideas, and plans that can be converted to your departments use. If your studying, good luck. If you just want to pick up some ideas on the latest in police management theory, this is still a good book to study!

I do have one question for the authors if they ever read their reviews. Page 207... Sources of Organizational Stress... what happened to sources three and four???? I am hoping it is an editing error, cuz while I can stretch officers'views to fit #3, I cannot find #4 to save my life (or test score)... :)
