Krick's Contribution Alone Makes This Book Invaluable
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-30
Although I haven't read all of this book, the contribution of Robert Krick, entitled "The Smoothbore Volley that Doomed the Confederacy" is such that it alone, at least to me, makes this an invalualbe book for students of both Jackson and Chancellorsville. For anyone who has been fascinated with the precise reconstruction of a historical event taking place at a defined place, Krick's writing will prove fascinating. No biography of Jackson that I have encountered, even Robertson's, provides as much detail on the circumstances surrounding this tragic occurence. As he points out and is generally known, the monument at Chancellorsville which purports to mark the spot where Jackson was shot on that May, 1863 moonless night is incorreclty placed. Read and take this book with you when visiting the area as the map included will prove of great help.

This is a major work in the ethnography of post-apartheid South Africa, and in political and legal anthropology, combining multi-sited rural fieldwork with analysis of national politics, providing one of the few detailed empirical studies of rural peoples' complex attitudes towards traditional authorities, and offering great insights into the persistence and resurgence of traditional authorities in contemporary SA.

Unfortunately it is absurdly priced. I would love to use it in a political anthro. course, but could never imagine asking my students to shell out for it. Hopefully the UKZN Press edition is cheaper in South Africa than it is here.

Wars are fought to build better futures for children?
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-01
Do you wonder how compassion develops in youth today? Will reading about the real experiences of children during WW2 give those of a younger generation a sense of the damage War can do to the individual psyche? "Children & War" by author Robin Cross was originally published in Britain in 1994. The many ways in which children were affected by wartime conditions are surveyed: aiding the resistance movement, being hidden from the Gestapo, starving in many countries. suffering the cruelties of the Atomic Age. Excellent graphics are used throughout. The last chapter was possibly an after-thought inserted for U.S. publication. Its final paragraph seems to focus on teenagers in the U.S. who wore "zoot suits"! Even with the draft distributing the pain of military service more 'equally' the children in this country were almost totally removed from reality except when a family member or close friend was killed.

Japanese-Americans lost their homes, precious self-respect & hopes for the future but most other children lived in innocence - - maybe until the U.S. ushered in even greater atrocities, and Americans felt a deep, broad sense of despair, and some even shame. Before the book's introduction the author states: "All sides in the war claimed to be trying to build a better future for their children" - - that might be the last time such a claim was made in print? There are governments engaged in conflicts presumably so that other countries can experience a democratic way of life. Yet on the way to that goal children are forced to fight, are maimed and/or killed. Where are the studies that could inform us of the emotional damage done? And where is evidence that anyone has been allowed to grieve for the horrendous, indescribable insults to body & mind that any war causes? Leaders use all kinds of justification for War. How many of the reasons given come anywhere near being honest? In which case, how can we make a connection between honesty and the democratic way of life envisioned?

This is a "blockbuster book" - - Think of adult heads as blocks of wood in a stubborn mold , resistant to trying peaceful solutions, perhaps even resisting the formation of intergenerational study groups where Peace could be discussed? Reviewer mcHaiku hopes that many will read "Children & War" and agree that it is an important book that reminds us that War is not a glorious adventure for children but has many cruel after-effects, as with adults. Study history, but spend "equal time" working for a better world.

This is a great reference tool! Most chronologies just give authors and titles. This one suggests what each work is about and why it's interesting and important. Moreover, the listing of bestsellers and prize winners gathers brings together this information that you formerly needed multiple sources to find. I also think the introductions to each section are lively and informative.

A must for anyone interested in American Literature.

Women to the Rescue
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-13
In this fascinating approach to the issue of gender in the Civil War era, Leeann Whites argues that the men of Augusta, Georgia (and presumably the rest of the South) were emasculated by their loss in that conflict. Through the efforts of white women confederate veterans were able to regain their sense of masculinity by the latter part of the 19th century. Whites argues that in antebellum Augusta, as in the rest of the South, that white men were free because they were not slaves. Their role encompassed protecting white women from outside influences and from those who were not free, obviously African Americans. In exchange for this protection, white women were subservient. When the Union emerged triumphant and slaves were freed, the white men of Augusta lost their pre-eminent position because they had failed in their duty to protect their women. Whites shows how in the years after the Civil War the white women of Augusta began a campaign to restore their men's sense of self-respect via activities such as honoring them through the building of memorials dedicated to the sacrifices of Confederate veterans. In doing so, they began to create the image of the Southern warrior fighting for their war of life against insurmountable odds. This was the Lost Cause that equired the valiant and honorable men of Augusta to take up arms. As a result of these efforts, men felt resurrected as they regained their sense of self, leading to their return to power after Reconstruction. Whites argument is fascinating, she uses numerous primary sources to support her views. Although one cannot come away from reading the book without agreeing that women did play a significant role in the return of men to power, she does ignore any efforts than men made on their own behalf. One has the impression that only the women of Augusta helped the men of Augusta return to their role as protectors. Although she makes a convincing argument that women made a significant contribution, it is only one factor discussed. Having said that, however, this work is essential for anyone studying gender relations, especially in the Civil War era. It is well-written and thorough Additionally, Whites makes a solid contribution to the field of collective memory as she shows how the memorial movement in Augusta changed the way in which Southerners remembered the war.

Great Information!

It is human nature to know about the inevitable, but not to do anything about it. For example, I live in California and I KNOW that there is substantial evidence that there will be an earthquake, but still, I am unprepared.

The September 11th events tore our lives apart. They made us feel unsafe in our very own homeland. Most of us lived with the idea that these kinds of things didn't happen in our country...but now we know they do.

This book has helped me to get proactive and begin to prepare for the future. It contains a plethora of information, from what we can expect in a future situation, to how to prepare and survive under harsh conditions. There is always a possibility of more terrorism, and this book is going to help me be more equipped for that.

An astute socio-historical analysis

Review Date: 2008-05-04
Written by John C. Putman (associate professor of history, San Diego State University), Class and Gender Politics in Progressive-Era Seattle is a scholarly look at he changing social order in early twentieth century Seattle. Examining the intersection of radical-labor movements, feminist movements, suffrage campaigns, Class and Gender Politics in Progressive-Era Seattle reveals how the alliances and conflicts between these movements contributed to Seattle's regional identity. "Unlike most eastern labor struggles, class conflict out west was more localized. The lack of large-scale national industrial firms meant that Seattle workers had to battle locally entrenched economic and political elites rather than national corporate leaders." An astute socio-historical analysis, particularly recommended for college library collections.

...Or, you should seek it out from Amazon's search service. A pity it's apparently out of stock as of this writing. One classic, 20's-era cocktail recipe to a page, facing a beautifully photographed and art-directed still life of the drink itself, with the appropriate little "props". We've tried to recreate some recipes from this book on special occasions(lots of well-known classics-and some very unknown ones)-two is about all anyone can handle-shaken, not stirred!-but the book is a great stand-alone gift even for teetotalers who love the elegant style of the prohibition era.

This book has exactly what I was looking for: loads of information with good quality photographs. Besides, it covers most of the important cars of the era, with lots of technical information on the cars and on the sport at the time. It only doesn't have much information on the statistics of the races, but that was not the author's focus. He proposed to write about the cars and that he did, brilliantly. One of the best books about motor sports in general I ever read.
