Forget the myth about women being subjugated into passive, quiet existences, in the past. There are more British women writers
in these pages than you ever knew existed, and they write with elegance, aplomb, craft, style, and wit. Educated ladies, all.
Most of them wrote while living a full life, having children, entertaining guests, participating in political and literary
discussion groups, and, in short, contributing to the world in which they lived. The introduction to each author is enlightening
and informative, and the poetry in many cases equal, in my opinion, to the better known writings of the male Romantic poets
of the day. Perhaps the biggest take-away you'll get is that "lesser-known" does not mean lesser quality.

Digital Convergence Demands New Leadership
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-01
Review Date: 2008-01-01
Tomorrow's leaders will be those who can coordinate employees, customers and suppliers to create value. As digital convergence
disrupts business models, organizations and their management will be forced to adapt new strategies.
Taking an inside-out, Johan Wallin, a consultant with Synocus Group, posits change requires the leader to assume the role of a business orchestrator. His or her goal: to nurture learning and creativity, which result in the skills needed to drive efficiency and innovation.
This requires developing four operational capabilities:
1. Generative - to secure the development of core resources.
2. Transformative - to develop new offering concepts.
3. Relationship - to foster value-creating customer interactions.
4. Integrative - to form value constellations.
Building capabilities require individuals to learn new skills:
1. Information Acquisition - the inquirer knows what he or she will lean and how long it will take.
2. Problem Solving - The result in known but the solution is not.
3. Co-Experiencing - In creative industries where designers and customers interact within a known timetable.
4. Insight Accumulation - a continuous process that bridge the gap from chance to serendipity.
Wallin argues capabilities are built only if individuals learn. Thus, managers have to create both an intellectual and emotional context that commits individuals to learn for the benefit of the organization. He defines the combination of value creation and learning "orchestrated activities." The leaders' role is:
* Conductor - information transmission and acquisition.
* Architect - problem solving.
* Auctioneer - co-experiencing.
* Promoter - insight accumulation.
In this readable book, Wallin offers interesting case studies to argue that in a world stressed with information overload and new technologies people will rely on individuals they know and trust for navigation. Their goals will be simple:
1. Behave rationally.
2. Minimize risks.
Simple, challenging goals that require leaders to develop:
1. New value constellations.
2. Patience.
3. Knowledge of and confidence in assuming an orchestrator's role.

This is an absolutly magnificant book, from the duo (Gary Crew and Steven Woolman) that brought you The Watertower and Tagged.
This book is told in the first person from Stuart, a boy who shares his flat with Caleb, a boy obsessed with insects. As the
plot unfolds, so does the griping tension created by the contrasts of the black and white pictures. A wonderful book.

This excellent book covers (from 1943 thru 1957) a section of the pin-up calendar genre, the Artist's Sketchpad. The calendar
publishers of the day hit on the bright idea of having additional sketches and paintings surrounding the main pin-up image.
This had the added advantage of not requiring the artists to think of humorous situations in which to place the `girl next
door'. Leader of the pack, Gill Elvgren, didn't do sketch pad calendars, he could always think up some credible situation
to show a gorgeous female with a raised skirt, he does have some paintings included though.
The book wisely shows each complete calendar page, so you can see the names and addresses of the companies that bought these give-aways by the million (those were the days when phone numbers had a bit of character, like MUrray Hill 2-4090, DEarborn 2-1935 or HYacinth 7-3595). Each monthly chapter has, on average, thirty-two pictures displayed on light colored pages and some pages have displays of those terrible four-line poems that seemed to be a requirement of any respectable girlie calendar.
The introduction mentions ten artists who painted most of the pin-ups shown but the book has a major omission in that none of the pictures are credited. Artists like Moran, Munson, Elliot, Mac Pherson or Elvgren have signatures you can recognise on the paintings but I think it would have been helpful if the all the names were printed by each picture. However, here's an idea, get a copy of the stunning `Great American Pin-up' (ISBN 3-8228-1701-5) and spend a pleasant hour or so using the nine hundred pictures (by sixty-one artists) to identify all the paintings in `Calendar Girl'.

Get Ready To Become Very Interested In Proof Coins!!!

You are about to enter into a covenant with a devil: The Ultimate Cameo Proof Coin. After you have begun to read this book,
which will initially picque your interest only because it is so beautifully made, you will fall hopelessly, madly in love
with the United States Mint Proof Coin! Yes, even though you don't like them or even know much if anything about them, the
author of this book is going to take you on such a journey through the various proof coins of the 1950 to 1970 era that you
are going to go out shortly after reading this book to seek out some nice proof coins, really. I can't exactly tell you why
I know this but trust me on it, you will. I think it is partly because the author describes in such loving detail, date by
date, denomination by denomination, what it is about a particular strike that makes one wish to own it, or at least to find
it. I think it is also partly because the author has done such a fine job of photographing the various stages of proof that
one can literally use this book as a photograde comparison guide....alas, I did to mine and now know that I don't presently
own any ultra-heavy cameo proofs, BUT I WILL....believe me, I will. This is a definite addition to the coin reference library.

Rare insight into high-stakes environment lobbying

Former geology consultant for the oil industry, Dr Jeremy Leggett turned his life around when he decided to jump the fence
and join the fight to try and prevent catastrophic climate change caused by our addiction to fossil fuels. The book chronicles
his new carreer as a scientist/lobbyist fighting the good fight and his constant brawls with lobbyists from the oil and coal
organizations.
Great introduction to climate change issues and the probable consequences of losing this fight. A unique look at high-level lobbying and the way some corporations are ready to risk our collective well-being to protect their short-term bottom-line. A must-read for activists, lobbyists, PR professionals and concerned citizens everywhere.
Thumbs up!
