Return of the Giant Monsters!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-05
Another fantastic collection of Atlas era monster and sci-fi comics. These brought back the wonder and thrills of these old stories (stories I read while waiting with my dad for a chair at the barber shop!) The stories are as creepy as the comics code would allow for that time, and some of the tales actually made our little minds ponders things other than the safety of our own little worlds. The art added so much to the telling - crafted by such visioneries as Kirby, Ditko, Ayers and more.
Fantastic stuff - and now available in hardback to proudly display next to your Dickens and Poe!!!

"One of the most important books..."

That quote comes from the review on the back, but you have to wonder how _important_is this book?
Keeping in mind this book was written in 1945, you can enjoy this book for what it is - a sort of science fiction/fact book. For example, "Universal and perpetual peace will reign in the Era of Romic Energy...". The reasoning seems solid - no reason to fight for fuel, all raw materials could be mined from the ocean and war would be too destructive (all Mr Dietz's reasons). However, as we know, these things did not happen.

This book is recommended highly just so the reader can enjoy how the future was supposed to look from the viewpoint of 1945. It certainly is a different view than the current one and, as it says on the back cover, "should be a part of the lirary of every intelligent American."

True Authenticity

This is a fascinating book, containing some great drink recipies. I've listed a few below.

Bottled Velvet
Corpse Reviver
Gothic Punch
Imperial Raspberry Whiskey Punch (10 gallon recipe)
National Guard 7th Regiment Punch
None Such Punch
Stonewall Jackson
Tween Deck Cup or A Splitting Headache
Yankee Punch

There are some great punch recipes that I've used for several parties.

It even contains a section about the manufacture of liquors with quite a few recipes.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone for just the punch recipes. But I would expect that civil war reenactors who want to be truly authentic, down to even what they drink would have a great time with this book!

Kanin's research is solid, and for those interested in San Francisco during the Gilded Age, or labor history, this is a must-read. Focusing in on a clique of unionists that seized contol of the city government, with a particular emphasis on Patrick Henry McCarthy. No, he was not a typical business unionist, but rather a urban progressive who combined a pratical wage-worker consciousness with a social reform mentality. On the other hand, he had no problem fusing a racist ideology into his form of progresivism. If you bothered to read this review, buy this book.

Baseball history that's interesting!

Review Date: 1998-02-13
It isn't easy reading history; good historians are plentiful, but combining that with good writing, storytelling, and narrative flow is darn near impossible these days. Brent Kelley delivers a touching, thoughtful treatment of baseball in the 1950s. Each chapter tells a season's worth of information, anecdotes, and news. He covers much ground, but the reader never loses track of people or events as the summer odyssey unfolds. If you want the whole story of 50s baseball, get it here, in one stunning volume.

Seriously a great book, definitely a bad movie

I am always defensive when people ask me about my favorite book. I often find myself convincing them that even though the movie was such a horrible movie (erase the memory from your brain), the book is absolutely my favorite book I've ever read. The reason being is there is a lot of controversy surrounding L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology. I say to you that it makes no difference the author's stand on religion or decisions in life. This book is still a wonderfully written book and I fell in love with it after reading only 100 pages. It mentions nothing of Scientology, although if it had undertones, I wouldn't have caught on because I know nothing of the religion. If you can read 100 pages and still decide you don't like the book, then you've definitely made a poor choice in buying the book. But I definitely want you to pick this book up and give it a try if you enjoy books like "Ender's Game" or even fantasy books like the Confessor Series. I would give an overall plot and theme, but you can just google that. I'm telling you, it's my favorite book of all genres. Period.

It is the best science fiction book I've ever read. Once I began to read I didn't want to stop.

Could not put it down

I have read many fictional novels before, but this one tops them all. After I read this book I was left thinking that i could never find a book that was as well written as this one. So far I haven't.

I never found a trace of his religion in it, partly because I wasn't looking. Battlefield Earth never got boring and it always had something interseting going on.

I highly recomend this book if you are looking for a fun read!!!!

I was hesitant many years back to read L. Ron Hubbard's SciFi books since I wasn't a fan of his sciendtology. However; I am glad I didn't let that stop me reading his other books. I was impressed with the science fiction he wrote and read all books in that genre. It really is sad what they did with this one when they transferred it to the screen. By far the worst movie John Travolta was ever associated with. The book is worth the read though. Perhaps someday they will make another of his books into a movie and do a better job of it. Be sure to read his "Mission Earth Series" if you like plenty of low brow action.

A good read

I found the book hard to put down. Last time I read it I was a fairly young adult, and missed the influences in the material. When I read it most recently, I enjoyed it as entertainment as well. No, its not the most technically proficient book I've ever read.

I found the introduction and "biography" fascinating; they really helped me get a sense for LRH through his own words and the way he describes his life. The text itself should be read for insights into his "psychology"

My great regret about owning this book, and unfortunately it is really water under the bridge, is that by purchasing I was effectively donating money to the church of scientology. I wish that I could undo that.

A brilliant study of antebellum Mississippi
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-04
Morris examines the development of a Mississippi community from early frontier to its rise as a center of the cotton culture. The book is extremely well written. Unlike most historians who attempt to write community studies, Morris writes with the reader in mind. His prose is accessible yet informative, sophisticated yet always enagaging. A must read for anyone who wants to learn more about antebellum Mississippi.

Great Writing ... Great Authors
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-29
My husband and I just finished reading 'Before Memories Fade' and thoroughly enjoyed the stories ... some very sad but all especially appreciated ... Each author shared some very special memories of war experiences ... One especially enjoyable read was 'Short Timer' by Alan Fuchs. The little puppy found Alan and helped him through the battle ... sad that he had to be left behind upon Alan's return to the states. Each memory shared by the various authors is very personal and special ... Thanks to Lt. Col. Robert W. Michel, U.S. Army Retired for putting it all together ... We need to remember the sacrifices made by so many men and women and those sacrifices are still ongoing. Again, Thank You!
