19th Century Ballet Made Easy
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.

I can't imagine a more painless way of learning about 19th century ballet than Tom Tierney's Ballet Stars of the Romantic Era. True to history, the four ballerinas have the matching costumes they wore for their famous Pas de Quatre -- when all four shared a single stage. Careful details include Marie Taglioni's trademark pearl necklace: she thought her neck was too long, and always wore a pearl choker to disguise it. The four ballerinas share a partner, dancer/choreographer Jules Perrot, so there are five dolls in all. My dancer daughter has had these paper dolls for years, and still treasures them.

This is one of Tom Tierney's prettiest and most feminine books. The plates are worthy of being framed, and I'm sure that most aspiring ballet dancers would love to have them on the wall in their rooms.
Until I bought this book, I'd only heard of Lola Montez, but more for her exploits than her dancing. Reading the notes accompanying the dolls was a fascinating introduction to the ballet world of the nineteenth century.

Excellent Overview of What Dianetics Does
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-02
The basic simplicity of Dianetics, how the mind actually works, why and how past incidents affect you today is fascinating. I liked the drawings of the restimulation of the woman as a young girl being bitten by a dog, then later in life wondering why her arm hurt when she was in the vicinity of a similar dog. This book won't teach you how to audit, but it will give you the basics. Buy this book and get the TRUE data of what makes you tick. Dianetics was just the start of a fascinating adventure, leading to LRH's drug, education and criminal reform.

Great supplement to Dianetics study

Readers of "Dianetics" The Modern Science of Mental Health" often complain that the book is difficult - it was originally written at the request of a medical textbook publisher, and the intended readers were physicians. It CAN be difficult for the layman to read.

This picture book helps to clarify the main concepts in the book. By itself, it is a good education in the mind, and how it affects the spirit and the body. The resolution for problems created by the mind (psychosomatic illnesses, phobias, irrational emotional responses, etc.) are presented in "Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health", but the basics behind it can be read in the Dianetic Picture Book.

I recommend this to anyone who has had trouble understanding Dianetics and wants to learn more about how the mind affects the body and spirit.

This is a fabulous book, covering some of the more risque elements of the silent film era, as well as covering political issues. Loved Mr. Brownlow's coverage of HYPOCRITES (1915), a Lois Weber film which exists but is unfortunately as yet inaccessible on video. Can't wait for his Mary Pickford coffee table book to come out, hopefully in the next few months!

An excellent series of authored chapters, this book get to the heart of character education, the children and their potential to improve the world, while addressing the adult ideologies projected onto the topic as dichotomous arguments for and against.

The best essays in support of character education...
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-25
I think this edited book is one of William Damon's best, because he brings together nine writers who each take a position on the prospects and future of character education in American schools and universities. The essays are very well written and integrated, and are accessible to upper high school and college-level readers.

Damon's position is that character education has been neglected because of "false oppositions" (either-or propositions), such as "individual vs. the community," "secular vs. the religious," and so on. These oppositions are false because each "side" of the argument stems from adult perspectives, not the ideas and imaginations of developing children. Additionally, advocates for each "side" fail to use the logic of "both-and" propositions.

As Damon says, "I have never heard of a youngster being harmed by witnessing another person's expression of spirituality, even when the form of spirituality is highly unfamiliar to the child. On the contrary, young persons are usually moved and fascinated..." (p. xiii-xiv). This is an example of how he wishes to understand the development of children and adolescents in areas of moral and character development.

The essays concern (1) how to transmit moral values when the transcendant American value is the "autonomous self;" (2) how character education is based on valid, scientific developmental psychology; (3) how to educate youngsters by "moral exemplarity" and by building a democratic community; and (4) how most Americans really are very united on the values that underpin character education.

I hope you enjoy this book.

An eclectic and interesting collection of ragtime era dance
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-04
An eclectic and interesting collection of ragtime era dance tunes, including a few rags. Many of these memorable pieces started dance crazes of their own, such as the Grizzly Bear, Kangaroo Hop, Cubanola Glide and Ballin' the Jack. Others are just exciting to play, like Eubie Blake's Chevy Chase, Too Much Mustard, and the wonderful latin-influenced Panama. As a testament to these fine pieces, many of them lived years longer than Disco, and are certainly as much fun as the Mashed Potato... or is that potatoe? Anyhow, a fascinating look at the ragtime era that will interest afficianado and newbie alike.

a fabulous and encyclopedic work

Review Date: 2008-01-30
This two-volume set covers California tile makers in the early part of the 20th century, until the depression and a change of fashion put most of them out of business. Each tile maker is covered separately, in alphabetical order, with an essay on the company, including its founder and its specialties, and many, many closeups of tile in glorious color. Most are pictures of a single tile or multiple-tile picture, but there are a few fireplace surrounds, baths, staircases, and other installations. In addition, in the back of the book are some explanations of how the tiles were made, who copied whose styles, and other details. Volume 1 is Acme to Handcraft; Volume 2 is Hispano-Moresque to Woolenius, but both volumes have the information in back. If you love tile, or any kind of design, you will pore over this book.

Great Book, but Dang! Where's the rest of it?

Without a doubt, this has got to be one of the best, if not the best book on Arts and Crafts Tile I've seen, and I've got them all. Although dealing with California tile makers only, there's enough material here to fill two books - and in fact, that's what they did! I didn't realize that this is really Vol. I of II, the other covers the rest of the H's down to the Z's. And that's my only gripe - $82 if one buys both, AND now I have to wait 4-5 weeks for the 2nd part. But as a reference to companies and what they made, this book is outstanding. Can hardly wait - Note, the cost of this book has gone up from $41 to the present $59.59 - So, I'd suggest buying the second vol now, before that goes up also. Note II there are two DIFFERENT Books the first covers Tiles from A to half way through the H's, the Second volume covers the rest of the H's down to the Z's. Even though they have different ISBN's Amazon seems to be getting them mixed up, calling the first the "Hardcover" the second book the "updated" book. There are two books, get them both! The 2nd book just as good as the first! 2006 update - these two books remain about the best for CALIFORNIA tiles, but The Encyclopedia of American Art Tiles (by Norman Karlson) Vols. 3 and 4 are just as good. However Norman's books (as great as they are) are a bit pricey - You just want California tiles? Then stick with the California Tile books (one and two) But want to have the best reference for ALL the U.S.? Then go with Karlson, but you will easily spend $200-$240 to get all four vols. If you go with Karlson, then you don't need this California book.

This book succesfuly explains how our society has grown to accept a school system that often fails minority children. The reasons and some wonderful solutions are explained in a clear and knowledgable manner.
It highlights the important role of white teachers and how as the majority of the educators (especially in elementary school) they can change our schools for the better, for all children.
This book is a must for parents-who can gain valuable information about our school system to use to their advantage and therefore their community.
I feel blessed for reading this and empowered.

The Final of Four on Chase
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-23
This book is the final of four outstanding books by these two accomplished authors. Any Chase collector or deco enthusiast should have them in their reference library. This book features reprints of original 1933 and 1942 Chase catalogs, factory information, and pre-1933 reprints of Chase Specialty flyers, some of which have never been published before. Pictures of newly discovered Chase products will be a great help to Chase collectors in identification of their wares. This book is a must for all those who appreciate the fine craftsmanship that came from the Chase factories. Donald-Brian Johnson and Leslie Pina should be commended for putting together this four part Chase reference set, this book being the final one of the four. Highly recommend!

Review Date: 2001-04-21
In this concluding book in a series of four about the history and products of the Chase Copper and Brass Co., the authors present the first (1933) and last (1942) catalogs of Chase's consumer products...and a wonderful surprise. The catalog pictures are crisp and clear, and the contrast between the early and last product offerings can be easily compared. But the first publishing of a series of pre-1933 "flyers" that were Chase's first "catalog" make this a must-have reference for collectors. Nine new pieces are shown, and new, additional information is provided about several other items previously attributed to Chase. Definite 5 star kudos to the the authors, Don Johnson and Leslie Pena, for this wonderful resource.
