I loved this book and have given it as gifts to women in my life. It is a really uplifting book. I liked it so much that since I have given my copy away to a friend to read and not gotten it back I ordered another copy with the study guide. It is very much worth the money and time spent to explore God's love for me. I highly suggest this book.

I don't know what inspired me to buy this book. But I sure am glad I did! Angela's awkward childhood brought tears to my eyes as I remembered my own childhood impediments. Long frizzy black hair--a patch over one eye----coke bottle glasses----
Angela's book is a wonderful reminder not to get so caught up with trying to meet the world's standards of beauty. In all of our misguided passions we are sure to miss the wonderful attributes that God has gifted us with. If we leave them unattended for vain pursuits they will never fully bloom.

Truthfully I did not like the title and almost did not read the book. It was highly recommended by I friend so I went ahead and read it. After reading this book I loved it and actually taught it for a group of ladies in our church. I highly recommend the workbook too. I plan to go throught the teen version with my daughter when she is old enough.

This book was recommended for my daughter by a therapist at her inpatient facility she's in for anorexia. I bought it for her and read it first. I thought it was excellent, but thought many of the thoughts were for an older person...she's 14. After buying this book I realized there is a version for teens. I purchased that for her too. She said the girls at the center all loved the teen version that was done in a magazine format. So, great book for an adult, but if it's for a teen, I'd go with the book modeled after this one just for them!

What a powerful revelation of the way our Heavenly Father sees us! This has truly transformed my entire walk with the Lord.

This is an interesting and somewhat unique book because the emphasis isn't theological or philosophical at all, but rather on spiritual practices one can apply in daily life.

As such, the author doesn't burden himself (or the reader) with trying to rigorously justify the recommended practices, nor does he attempt to build a theoretical framework. Instead, he simply presents the practices and suggests that readers give them a try. I agree with this approach, because it seems that sometimes, especially in spiritual matters, we have to first take action and experience the consequences of that action in order to develop our understanding, rather than the more typical (and skeptically cautious) western approach of first developing understanding on rational grounds, then acting on that understanding.

Although the book doesn't include rigorous argumentation, the author does link the practices to a variety of spiritual traditions, including many quotes from sages and spiritual texts. I presume this is mainly to show the universality of the practices, and also to increase the chance that each reader will find things they can resonate with. Here and there, the author also mentions cases in which modern psychology and neuroscience provide scientific evidence supporting the practices, but this is a minor component of the book.

The book is divided into short chapters, and I think that reading a chapter a day will work well for most readers. I've read the book once, and I think it's valuable enough that I'll periodically reread it in the future.

Overall, I highly recommend the book to anyone motivated to grow spiritually, and who is open-minded enough to not be troubled by seeing references to many different spiritual traditions. Also be sure to check out 50 Spiritual Classics: Timeless Wisdom from 50 Great Books on Inner Discovery, Enlightenment and Purpose, which I think nicely complements this book.

As a final note, please remember that the key is to implement the practices in your daily life, not just read about them and understand them intellectually.

I've been a fan of Roger Walsh for a long time and was extremely honored that he endorsed my latest book, Beyond the Secret. In many ways this book inspired my own. In short, I am indebted to Roger Walsh and especially this book for having done so much to open my own heart and inspire my life. A wonderful book by a wise and articulate author; I recommend it to everyone.

This is a great "spirituality for beginners" book. It is easy to read and full of great exercises, which can practically be done anywhere (just make sure its someplace you are least likely to be distracted and disturbed). This book will help you develop spiritually and mentally by helping to invigorate your sense of compassion and love for all of nature's beings.

I served in the RCAF durin ww2. I later flew fighters in th USAF, served as captain on USAirways for 28 years.I have written 5 books on aviation.Jeoffrey Wellum's book is a master piece.His breath -taking descriptions of aeral battles puts you right in the cockpit of his BEAUTIFUL Spitfire.
" The narrow legs of it 'undercarrage give it a delicate apperance.It has the air of a thoroughbread---It's ellipitical wings and sleder body give it an air above all other fighters,the sound of it'sRR Merline engine produces a sound ,like nothing else in the air.I firmly believe that the Spitfire was the most beautiful fighter of ww2, and I as jeoffery said ,I would also give my arm to fly it.
I don't know which was his most dangerous flying conditions were,weather flack, or bullets. He did a yomans job in all these instances.

The best first hand book on flying - particularly the Spitfire, I have ever read. And I've read a lot!

Excellent first person account of the Battle of Britain but not the best I've read. If you're looking for something with a little more of the overall picture, try Fly For Your Life by Robert Stanford Tuck. Tuck's book is definitely the best memoir on the Battle of Britain I've come across and one of the best WW II books I've ever read.

This is one of those books I pick up again and again just to read a random chapter. It is that well written. It tells a story of a generation of people and there unbelievable courage & humility. I know because my own father was one of them. The deeply humourous and self depreciating strong and silent type. I doubt we shall see there like again.

Geoffrey Wellum has written from his younger years, from his own experience,what kind of world he faced.A story so incredible that our mind almost refuse to believe it's true. There's one way of capturing a reader, and that is HONESTY. Mr.Wellum is dead honest.I'm reading the book for the tenths time, stil laughing at some situations and very, very sad at others.A book very hard to put down.I guess most of the persons who want to read this book is aviations "freaks", but this book is a good read whoever you are.I've been so fortunate to have met, one of my heroes,mr Geoffrey Wellum, and talked to him.A fantastic person that I hope to meet again.

I absolutely LOVED this book! I've been reading several books about attracting prosperity, but they were all lacking one thing. That one thing is how God is involved. This book finally connected the two for me. I now see how you can attract prosperity and still honor God. What I appreciated the most what the difference between "go" signs and "stop" signs. Sometimes I get confused on what God is trying to tell me. I recommend this to all those spiritual people that are still trying to find guidance.

I heard it many times before - tithing will demonstrate to the universe that you trust that there will always be more.... yet I never did it. That is until I read this book. What made it easy for me where 2 things, one Edwene didn't tell you where to tithe to, other then wherever you are spiritually fed.... well that makes it easy. The second point was - try it out for 6 months - if it didn't work for you you can stop.... well I was hooked after 2 weeks. Now I receive money and I am excited about sharing it with whoever inspired me ~ fed me spiritual food... my children, my church, Edwene, a speaker, a song writer, etc. This book has touched me deeply.

This is a great book. I listened to it first on CD and loved the author's chatty wisdom. I bought the book so I could refer back to it often. A small book but full of very important spiritual laws.

Reading Edwene's book also promopted me to get the AudioBook and begin practicing these laws and THEY WORK!

For almost 20 years I've been struggling with my relationship to money. Part of me didn't want it (I saw poverty as more spiritual and more ethical) and part of me hated being without it. Not having choices and struggling because of my lack of money have been really hurtful and constraining. It also created great anxieties. There are quite a few things I'd been planning to get around to some day that I had not yet done.

I worked on these problems through every method anyone suggested - spiritually, psychologically, practically. Still, I had no significant shift UNTIL I READ THIS BOOK. Edwene Gaines has written a beauty of a book. It is the perfect book for me. She outlines no "program," has no endless worksheets, she simply lays out the four most basic spiritual prinicples and walks us through how to apply them to life.

Now I know why I could never experience a shift in my relationship to money - firstI had to start tithing. I love it that she starts with tithing and makes it very clear that we must do this first, not when we think can afford to. Through Edwene's book I saw clearly that I can't afford not to. This was a key for me to beginning.

The rest of the book flows beautifully from there. Following these simple prinicples in my life is easy. I'm no longer conflicted about money. I'm no longer anxious. And I have an openness that I did not know was possible. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a better relationship with money.

I found this book very helpful to me in raising children to love the God who cares for them unconditionally. This book proposes an approach to parenting that is loving in the same way God loves us--with grace. I highly recommend it.

This book is excellent. It is the how-to book on raising your kids as Christians. It is the detail book with his companion book, How to raise kids for true greatness being the big picture. I recommend them both.

I've read lots of parenting books but this is the first one that practically explained what parenting with grace looks like. I appreciated Tim Kimmel's candid personal stories and was truly encouraged.
My first thought was, "Where was this book when my kids were little?" I'm just thankful I could pass it along to my daughters. The earlier parents read this book, the better!!

Most parents, whether Christian or not, want "good" children. Unfortunately, it's easy (and common) to think that "good" fits an appearance, and we can chase values that have little to do with a transformed heart and living faith.

It is easy to follow worldly goals for our children, as activities, friends, and appearance may be most easily measured. However, when we do this, we set a trap for ourselves and our children. We damage their hearts, restrict our relationship and influence with them, and may push them away from the true source of grace.

What should be the greatest gift - and difference - for a child raised in a Christian household?

GRACE. (Grace received, and grace given.)

Tim Kimmel delivers an exceptional view of parenting. He audaciously challenges parents to look into their own hearts, as well as their children. Meanwhile, he never loses sight of the call for believers to live in righteousness.

It is a balance that would trip up many, but this book avoids pushing a personal agenda by diving into - and wisely understanding - scripture.

If your hopes and prayers for your child include a living, growing, vibrant faith, then you must parent with grace. This is not always easy, and doesn't always result in perfect "looking" children. As the book explains, grace is not an absence of boundaries, and requires both discipline and direction.

Only a heart that is transformed can truly give and receive grace, and only grace can transform a heart. This book effectively argues that a grace-filled home will nourish a whole child, and grace-filled parents will introduce a gracious heavenly Father to their children's hearts. For those who want to see love, knowlege and faith grow in their homes, I highly recommend this book.

In preparation for the arrival of my first child in 1998, I read many Evangelical parenting books. These books sought to encourage new moms like me with moving discussions of the importance of our role. These books also provided practical discipline strategies. But, as a first-time mom, I needed more than ennobling rhetoric and discipline techniques. I sought a comprehensive, Biblically-based framework for parenting that would help me to structure and evaluate my day-to-day interactions with my child. I couldn't find anything that met my needs in any of the many books that I read. Dr. Kimmel's book provides the framework I've been searching for and is an outstanding addition to the Evangelical parenting literature.

I especially appreciated the author's use of Scripture to develop his framework, particularly his analyses of Jesus' interactions with children. Matthew 18:5-6 and 10, for example, provide motivation for Dr. Kimmel's point that children feel significant when they know they have their parents' attention. Mark 9:36-37 underlies Kimmel's argument that children feel secure when they receive affection.

My only regret is that I wasn't aware of this book when it first came out! My only criticism of the book is that it doesn't contain enough practical application material.

I teach kindergarten and this is one of my favorite books to share with my class. I love the pictures and the kids are fascinated by the story. I had the book in paperback, but it has worn out. I now have my old paperback book to check out to the children and my own copy to cherish.

Our whole family enjoys this book. Audrey Wood is one of our favorite authors. All of her books are a delight to read. I meant to select 5 stars, and I can't change it now!

My daughters, ages 4 and 2, have requested this book every night since I bought it 3 weeks ago. They even take it down from the bookshelf themselves during the day to look at the beautiful illustrations. The story is wonderfully written, and my daughters love trying to remember who gets turned into what food. A great buy for our family.

I love this story, it is just a classic. Great for any child in grade school. The pictures, however, are probably the best part. Gorgeous. Simply gorgeous.

Audrey Wood is clever and fanciful. My daughter loves this book! She first read it at age 10 and asked me to buy her another copy- at age 14(the first was lost in a move). She has become a fan of Audrey Wood (Weird Parents, Elbert's Bad Word)...as have I.

This is a sweet story but I found the narration by Jimmy B. and his daughter a little lacking. I'm a Jimmy Buffet fan no doubt. I just don't think voice overs are his thing. It is cool to hear him doing something with his daughter though. Like I said, it's sweet but I don't think we will pull this one off the shelf very often.

When I read the initial literary review, I had to laugh. The story is not weakened by the Jolly Mon's lack of efforts! Hah! The story is about the Jolly Mon's total surrender to his own destiny. He sings, the fish jump out of the sea, a musical instrument comes his way, he tries to play and makes a discovery. He trusts nature. He takes the opportunites that come his way with faith and grace. He uses the gifts he was given to the best and highest purpose. He does as he is asked to do. The book is a metaphor of faith and surrender. Besides that, it is beautifully illustrated, the music is lovely and my 2 1/2 year old son asks for it again and again. And, yes we are all parrotheads...

Anyone who is familiar with Jimmy Buffett understands ~ fantasy and fun are important parts of life.

This book & CD get the dream underway...

When I ordered this book I didn't realize it was a children's book. But when it arrived I read it then mailed it to my grand daughters. So it didn't go to waste and it was at least read/heard by three people in my family. I have loved the other Jimmy Buffett books and songs.

The quality of the printing, the beautiful 'semi-true story', the bright and well done colorful pictures and the bonus CD of Jimmy Buffett's song, aka The Jolly Mon, make this an excellent purchase for anyone with young children in their lives. It can lead to laughter, clapping, dancing and giggles!

It was a good book for young children. There grandparents hide a treasure.

1979. I was 7 years old. Found this masterpiece in the elementary school library one day. This book changed my childhood; it introduced the concept of mystery and adventure. It's effects - lasting. Now 35, it's the year 2007, and I once again stumble upon "Key to the Treasure". Life is great. Nostalgia warms my soul. Kids: enjoy your childhood - read as many books as you can. These years are the BEST of your life.

Now... it's on to "The Mystery of Chimney Rock"...

Have you ever searched for hidden treasure? Jed and his twin siblings Bill and Liza do just that in The Key to the Treasure. These three adventurous youngsters must solve clues and do it secretly so that they can surprise their grandparents. Along the way they often learn to set aside their differences and work together.
The three kids were staying with their grandparents for the summer when they accidentally stumbled upon the clue to a treasure their great-great grandfather had hidden over a hundred years ago. Using their wits they solve clues and overcome obstacles to help them find the key to the treasure. Some of the things they encounter are a hissing goose, a mischievous little boy, paper that is so old it falls apart, wasps, and moldy pouches.
I loved this book when I was a child and still read it to my students today. I always tried to figure out the clues before the three kids and I always dreamed of hiding my own treasure for someone to find. The writing style may not be the best especially compared to books written in our day and age but it is a fun book and a quick read. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes quick mysteries and hidden treasure.

I thought this was a good book because there are lots of clues and it is very interesting for kids to make pretend discoveries. It was fun and there were lots of decriptions about how the treehouse looked. (Nicolas, Age 7, 3rd Grade)

As a child I read "Key to the Treasure" by Peggy Parish at least three times, if not more. I became enraptured with the story line from the very beginning as the accidental discovery of a piece of paper rolled up in an old Indian war bonnet turns into the adventure of a lifetime for three young children.

What I enjoy most about Peggy Parish's book is that it is fiction based on facts. This lends a great deal of believability to the story while providing young readers with glimpses of a time when life was far more simple and yet much more fun. For this reason alone I purchased a new copy of the book for my nine-year-old daughter.

I highly recommend "Key to the Treasure" for children ages seven through twelve who enjoy reading and also enjoy using their imagination. Many hours of pleasure are sure to be derived from this book that I believe to be a classic children's story.

This is an excellent book. It will give you a more balanced perspective of what means to be a man of Faith, and how society expects this man to actually be.

In my top list of books. Made me cry when I read it. That's powerful writing.

This book was a bit of a surprise. While it is not the best "Catholic" novel I have read, its many good parts provide much to recommend it. I have been familiar with the story line from the Gregory Peck movie which has been a late-show staple. The book is more intricate and nuanced, like novels used to be. Cronin's characters are well-drawn, seem consistent and grow in your imagination like real people. He has a notion of ecumenism that concervative Catholics might find simple-minded and perhaps offensive, but probably reflects his childhood experience, with which many American Catholics could easily identify, that sometimes God lets himself be found extra ecclesiam.
In sum, a good book. I am glad I read it. I had trouble putting it down at night.

I purchased this book on the cheap not knowing a thing about A.J. Cronin. Reading the back, seeing the "Christian" theme, I decided to give it a try (it was on the clearence table!).

Grabbed from the first few pages, one can't help but feel for poor Francis as he struggles through his emotional and tumultous childhood, discovering his faith and ultimately landing in China to rekindle the flame of a forgotten mission. Through the story he meets various characters: the local militia, outcast roughians, the tender and vulnerable Chinese people, Catholic hiarchy and a few friends...

Francis remains true to Scripture (with one notable exception) and his vocation by being pious, and living in only very minor indulgences. He lives for the God, the mission and for the Chinese people, often to his own detriment, leading the way by his example.

A great read...a treasure that I "just" picked up...

Father Chisholm, the main protagonist in this story of Christian faith, flourishes as an example of what it means to be a man of conviction. Archibald Joseph Cronin has pieced together a story that not only is readable but thought provoking. Father Chisholm acts with courage and compasion as he lives out his vocation under trying conditions. This story is an affirmation of faith and if I were the director of curriculum at our seminary I would include this as required reading for our candidates.

Just add me to the pack of people who loved this book as a child, and who are now reading it to their own children.

One of the things I want to add to the accolades is that this makes a good book for children to read. It is particularly satisfying because it has a good story -- something that is sometimes lacking in beginning readers.

As far as level I would say that it is at a first grade level which is to say that the print is still fairly large, but that there are more sentences per page than the very beginning readers are used to.

Five Stars. Classic story with wonderful artwork.

10 Star First Reader for children just learning the value of friendship and the feelings of others. Ideal for learning compassion, how deeply felt are hurt feelings, and how to fix them. Weighs the importance of ego vs humility, easily discernable and also appeals to a child's sense of ineptitude which arises naturally from his or her vulnerability as a child. Always a "first choice" if it hasn't been read in a while, and always a great pick for instilling confidence on difficult days, reminding both parents and adults that everyone is special, and that everyone has value, and can be productive and useful. A wonderful story of intimacy and rescue to which children instantly relate and appreciate, setting a foundation for lifelong compassion in the dignity of others, and respect for their emotions.

This book was one of my first reads in the elementary school library. Little Black, should be in everyone's library. Very good illustrations. Easily read to little children. One of my better memories of childhood books and now hard to find.

I found this book while going through a collection of books that belonged to my Grandmother - a former elementary school teacher. I immediately showed it to my 3 year old son who LOVES horses. We read this book several times a week. It is hands down, his favorite. The book is written in such a way that it holds a child's attention endlessly. My son gets a wide array of expressions on his face as I read it to him and he looks at the neat pictures. It is too bad that this book is no longer in print. Books written like this nowadays are few and far between. A favorite, a classic, a keepsake!

I am angry that the reviews that are shown for this book are the ones for the original version, which appears to be out of print. This is *not* the original story with the wonderful pictures that I loved as a child, the ones that are mentioned in several of the reviews; this seems to be one "translated into Navajo" and with different illustrations. Judging from the cover, I don't like them. Be warned: This is *not* the book you remember.
