. Alistair Horne's The Price of Glory is a superbly written and haunting account of the horrendous battle at Verdun in 1916 between the French and German Armies. The Germans consciously attacked the fortress system they knew the French would defend in order to bleed the French Army to death, which, for its own reasons, willingly accepted the challenge. Verdun was the symbol of the will of France; "Ils ne passeront pas" became the famous pledge in the greatest battle of attrition the world had ever seen. The book outlines the German's extensive and rapid buildup of resources and their careful security measures in their attempt to take this fortress system. The battle that lasted from February 21st to December 18th 1916 resulted in 1.2 million casualties for both sides. Horne reveals the character and personality of the generals: Falkenhayn, Joffre, Crown Prince, Knobelsdorf, de Castelnau, Petain, Neville, and Mangin, showing their unique strengths and weaknesses and how those character traits affected their decisions in battle. The underground battles for Forts Doumamont and Vaux are described in chilling detail. The ingenious dirty tricks used by both sides were depicted: the wearing of captured uniforms, the use of false blinker signals, and the Germans firing duds from the 420mm siege mortars to get the Frenchmen to go underground while German infantry swarmed the trench works. There are vivid descriptions of the use of poison gas and graphic accounts of the first use of the flamethrower on a battlefield. Horne takes a catastrophic battle of unthinkable proportions and makes it all too real.

Fairly quick read, great insight on both the leaders and the soldiers who fought. Brush up on your french though, Some quotes and a few short passages are in french, Without translation. That was my only complaint. If you've gotten as far as to read these reviews then I encourage you to buy the book...you will enjoy it.

This engagement was fought entirely between French and German units. What makes Sir Alister's book so important is that most accounts of World War I in English tend to focus on the experiences of the United Kingdom. The French Army, however, contributed more division to the western front than the British. The focus on a battle in which no British units participated is rare in an English-language publication. The book is also an easy read. One testament to the caliber of the prose is that it has stayed in print since its initial publication over 40 years ago, which is no easy thing.

The leading figures in this study are names well-known to any student of the Great War: Falkenhayn, Joffre, Castelnau, Petain, Crown Prince Wilhelm and Nivelle. Horne does an excellent job of giving his readers short biographical sketches that breath life into these legendary names in a way that presents them as they were--human beings with strengths and frailties like everyone else.

As good as this book is there are some problems. Readers with out any ability in French might find Horne's passages in this language rather confusing. Sir Alistair's argument that Verdun cost Germany any chance of winning the war seems a little suspect as well. The German Army remained an effective force until the last stages of the conflict. Other factors, such as diplomatic ineptitude and provoking the United States to enter the war probably did more to cost the Germans victory than the defeat at Verdun. Still, even with those points in mind, this book is quite impressive and readers will enjoy it.

This is a classic and the main lines of the book are relevant today. Some minor deatails are now obsolete from the viewpoint of the modern historiography. Holger Afflerbach's biography of Falkenhayn was published about 10 years ago. Horne didn't knew all the facts about this notorious commander of the German high command. An other book from the German point of view, Paul Ettighoffer's Verdun is great, but like Afflerbach's biografy not available in English as far as I know. It gives a completely different story about the fall of Fort Douaumont. Ettighoffer made me suspect that Horne misinterpreted the code name "Gericht" of the German attac. Horne makes Falkenhayn to look too dumb, the operation Gericht had some military sense, a little, but not much anyway. No serious historian can deny the main point of Horne. No one can whitewash Falkenhayn's name and Verdun remains one of the greatest military disasters of human history. Don't hesitate too much. Horne's Verdun is still a wonderful book to read.

This is a good book on the battle of Verdun. Its probably the best book in English on the subject and it very accessable to the ordinary reader in terms of explaining the battle and telling its story.

Many people focus on the extraordinary lose of life associated with the battle on both sides. But the battle is very interesting as an example of a strategy gone wrong. Both sides lost their prespective on events with disasterous consequences. The initial German plan was for an offensive in a strong and critical sector of the french front that would force the French into a counterattack with disproportionate losses on their side. What went wrong at first was that the German attacks were more successful than the german side ever imagined they would be. The success of the attacks created an impression that an outright victory at Verdun might be possible. This impression led to huge losses to the german army. The Germans had in fact blundered into the trap they had hoped to set for the French. And once the losses started to mount, they losses themselves became part of a circular logic that kept the offensive going. Once the germans had exhausted their offensive push, the French did what the Germans had originally expected them to do and launched counteroffensives with huge losses to take back everything that they had lost.

The lessons I took from the book is that plans have to be objectively re-evaluated on a regular basis. Emotion and prestige need to take second place to an understanding of what can be gained at what cost. Finally, that victory fever can fool a leader implimenting a successful strategy into making enormous gambles to win a bigger victory than the strategy was intended to deliver.

Beyond the questions of strategy, the book shows the true acts of what can only be called heroism on both sides in the different phases of the battle. There were shocking victories and bitter defenses on both sides. Horne also does a wonderful job of going beyond the battle into its effects on French culture, history and politics in the postwar period. There is no other book about Verdun in english that even comes close and few books on the first world war that capture it so well.

I am repeatedly blown away by this book! It has been so helpful to me personally, and I share it with those I love. I would read certain sections, and literally, my jaw would drop. This book really put all the pieces together for me; it makes complete sense. I am only 21 and feel I am lucky, not only because my mother gave me this book, but also because I have truly understood it at a relatively young age. "Remembering Wholeness" is eye opening and empowering at the same time. One of my favorite chapters is the one titled, "The Universe is Abundant"...definitely one of those jaw-dropping sections!!

This book is really wonderful. A definite read. The chapters are short, written in big writing and the message and positive living and her own experiences and her learning makes this an amazing book. Living for Christ and worshiopping and her own beliefs sharing them that has helped her in writing this book and sharing with others how to do and live the same ways for a peaceful and joyous life. I love it and plan on reading this book again.

This book has answered so many long held questions with perfect clarity and understanding.

The concepts of choosing to do things to each other here on earth that would cause us to have to forgive is not a concept of God "brokering" these contracts. That seems a little exaggerated. The idea behind the "little spirit" is simply this. When we choose to see our perpetrators as something other than perpetrators it becomes easier to forgive them.

We choose to do things that require forgiveness all the time, sometimes out of ignorance and regretfully on purpose, but on some level, we CHOSE to do it. Do I believe that we make contracts with each other to inflict pain and suffering before we came to earth? No, but it was a given that we would submit to evil, and do things that would require forgiveness and when we can see our offenders as perfect spirits who have been caught in evil, it is so much easier to forgive and let God handle it.

There is darkness and light in every book written by the hand of man. He who seeks for fault will find it, he who seeks for truth will find it as well. No one should claim this book to be scripture, and ANYTHING written by men is "the philosophies of men mingled with scripture" unless otherwise specified as scripture. Look at the light this book brings. I have had multiple personal experiences of transformational healing for myself my family and my clients as a Rapid Eye Technician and Life Coach. The concepts of this book can bring people to Christ. Carol has a gift in making practical sense out of vague concepts. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water, see the fruits, they are there.

An eye opening look into homelessness and humanity. It confirmed some of my thoughts towards the homeless but softened my heart as well.

This book is awesome and it is for everyone. I considered myself to be a generally compassionate christian, but this book really made me do some deep soul searching. This is an amazing story and it is very well written. Don't pass this one up!

Awesome adventure. I respect these guys. Book is in the same spirit as Nickeled and Dimed, but these guys had a spiritual mission and they didn't cheat like the author of Nickeled and Dimed.

Anyone who tests their beliefs the way Mike and Sam do - by living on the streets for months - are truly sincere and courageous. Mike's descriptions of his pains, joys, and the quirky characters they met fascinated me. Mike didn't just talk about homelessness and the role of Christians - he experienced it. Anyone, religous or not, who has compassion for others and appreciates introspection can appreciate this book. Under The Overpass is in my personal "Hall of Fame".

I originally purchased this book over a year ago because I heard an interview with the author on a local radio station. I've given away my first copy and purchased this copy for my daughter to read, she could not put it down, just as I could not put it down when I first read it.

The book is truly inspiring, heartwarming and heart wrenching in places. After reading, I had a greater desire to see the world around me in the way Jesus sees it. I began to look for small, secretive ways; I could extend the love of our Savior to people. I was inspired to carry bags of food and water, with an encouraging note or religious pamphlet included, in my car to hand out to people who stand by the side of the highway with "will work for food" signs.

This book is well worth the price.

One of the best books I've read in a very long time. I don't think anyone could read this book and not come away from it with a changed heart. Once you read this book, you will see God in a whole new light. I know I did and He is beautiful. I always liked the first verse in Isaiah 6. It says, "In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord upon a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple". This gave me the vision of a God so great and magnificent, but also so unapproachable . Once I read this book, my heart was touched by a God who is not only very approachable, but who truly has felt what I've felt and who knows humility as well as He knows magnificence. READ THIS BOOK!! YOU WON'T BE SORRY!

Having read all 3 books - this one, The Gift and Finding Noel, I can honestly say that they are among the best I've read. My first knowledge of Richard Paul Evans was on the Glenn Beck TV program. I liked his testimony, so I decided to read the books. Very enjoyable and well written.

Wonderful story!! Great for all ages. I would highly recommend!!

I was satisfied with my purchase. It arrived on time and it arrived in good condition.

This is a good book for my 4th grade son. It is hard to find books on his reading level that hold his interest. The narator of the story is Hank the cowdog (also self proclaimed head of ranch security). The chapters are only 3 or 4 pages and give my son a sense of accomplishment for being able to read a couple of chapters each night.
Hank also has a few pronuciation problems, allowing the young reader to identify correct pronunciation and grammer. The stories are interesting and funny and have really improved my son's interest in reading as well as his grades in reading and language skills. We now own them all as well as many audio books as well. It was fun to hear Hank's voice and read along.

Some background for this review: I originally purchased Hank in book and cassette form for my nieces and nephews in the early 80's. What first caught my eye was actually The Further Adventures of Hank the Cowdog. Further adventures? I plucked the Original Adventures book from the shelf and was hooked after the first two pages. These stories are entertaining and funny, the characters, too; and they aren't just for kids, either. Everyone I have given Hank to over the years has enjoyed hearing and/or reading the stories. I also like that it is the author giving voice to his creations.

I loved hanks first adventures in this book.this book is great.

The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog (Hank the Cowdog 1)

These audio books help children that are having trouble with the written word. I also use them in the car, so each trip we hear more of the story. The kids love them and I think it makes them interested in reading.

This book takes place on a ranch in Texas. The characters are Hank, Drover, Loper, the coyotes, and Bruno. Hank is the boss for guarding the ranch at night. He watches out for the chickens. But Hank got sick of the ranch. He tries to find the kill of the chickens, but eats one of the dead ones instead. Then he went to live with the coyotes and still tries to find the chicken killers. Does Hank go back to the ranch? You will have to read the book for yourself to find out. I really like this book because I got to see the author give a talk and read out of one of his books.

I wasn't expecting much from this book, really.

It was given to us as a gift, and I sort of set it aside in the book basket. My wiley children pulled it out one day for a read, and it has been on the top of the heap ever since.

The text isn't much.

But oh, the illustrations. The pictures are full-page cut-paper collages and they will suck you in, as your kids point out all these little details. The people are hilariously real -- you can recognize people you know in their expressions.

Each page has a little peep-through to the next -- we love that!

The paper has a wonderful heaviness -- this is a high-quality book. I need to write another thank-you note to the giver, now that months have gone by and we really enjoy it.

Oh, even the animals in the story have funny little personalities. It's just a darling book.

And the moral of the story is, even when you have nothing, you can make something of it.

This is a great book! My son loves it, and I enjoy reading it to him. The pictures are interesting and there's a lot on each page to entertain the eye. Plus, the story is really cute.

i love this book. the illustrations are great and the story is simple yet enjoyable for all ages.

We were introduced to this book on Between the Lines. I found it at the library and once we got it home, my 3 yr. old feel in love. The message is great, the images fun and the story enjoyable. My son loved the book, but he wanted us to sing the song in the back. We did a poor job, then I found the audio book at the library. We listened again and again. Even my 1 yr. old enjoys it. Whenever my son sees sheet music he pretends to read it and sings "I Had a Little Overcoat". How could I not treasure this book forever?

This is a great book! It has wonderful illustrations, hence The Caldecott Medal, and an engaging story. My son loves this book, especially turning the pages to find out what the overcoat will become next. This is not just a children's book, since I gave it to my professor and his wife and they both loved it. This is one of the books that I don't get tired of reading over and over.

Primarily Lori Schiller and Amanda Bennett, but also Lori's family, Dr. Doller et al did an excellent work to open the window to the rest of us, socially acepted as "sane", to have a view into the mechanics of an actually "crazy" mind. I hadn't read a book like that for a long time, not a single sentence in this book is fluff! There is also an excellent movie in this book

My son, also in his teens, started acting very weird and I thought he was just a spoiled brat, till my wife pointed out to me the obvious; "he wasn't OK" and he started to talk about "voices" and very similar things.

I didn't really know what to do (he came from overseas to live with me, so I basically didn't know him). I fell like I had gone to a foreign country and would see signs I could not really comprehend. Lori helped me understand things better. I found clear answers to some very concrete questions I had myself about clinical craze

I loved this book's depiction of mental illness and have re-read it several times. I am going to push a question that has been alluded to in past reviews. This book was published 11 years ago. Does anyone have any updates as to how Lori has been doing since then? Thank you very much.

This is a unique and beautiful book. Any person with interests in Psychiatry or Mental Health issues must read it. It's the first time I experienced what a schizophrenic felt first hand. A must-read!

Schiller writes grippingly and insightfully of her experience of schizophrenia including the "cold wet packs" of ice water soaked sheets used to restrain and calm her psychotic outbursts and her times in hospital "quiet rooms". The writing style is journalistic and factual when dealing with intense emotions and experiences. She is wonderfully descriptive in explaining the reality of her delusions and hallucinations, the experiences of pychotherapy, suicide attempts, cocaine use, psychiatric hospitals and half way houses. Eventually clozaril helped (with psychotherapy) to bring her back from the abyss of severely disabling schizophrenia. Her full diagnosis is "schizoaffective" disorder as her illness includes a bipolar disorder component. The accounts by Schiller, her family members, doctors and friends lend insight to the course of her disease especially as experienced by her family. I was particularly struck by her parents' progress from denial and resentment of both her diagnosis and her doctors to growing insight into schizophrenia and eventual recognition of the illness in their family history. While the multiple accounts make the narrative more difficult to follow they also add greatly to the story. Highly recommended!

The Quiet Room is a powerful account of a woman lost in her illness of schizophrenia. I was amazed at how the author, Lori, hid her hallucinations from people for so long before getting treatment. I found myself angry at her parents for denying her illness for so long and delaying treatment which she very much needed years before it was received.

It's also amazing that Lori made it through her experience of schizophrenia and was able to tell her story. During the worst of her illness, she was extremely suicidal at times and thought nothing of it (for example, playing a game of crossing the street again and again with her eyes closed and walkman blaring so she couldn't hear the cars). She could have easily died at those times and not come through to tell her story.

This book was very well written and made me feel for Lori. I couldn't put this down once I started. Although, I did give it a five star review and found it to be one of the most interesting books I've read, I don't necessarily recommend it to everyone.

At times this book was too well written, too many details and caused parts of the book to be triggering for me. I'm not schizophrenic (never have been), but I've been in hospitals for depression and other things. Lori's details of the "quiet room" (seclusion in the hospitals) and what happened to her when she was out of control in the hospitals was disturbing to me, as I've been in different "quiet rooms" in hospitals and I found myself remembering my own experiences and getting upset. Just because this was triggering for me, doesn't mean it will be for others. I'm just saying, you've been warned.

As triggering as this book was, it remains a five star for me. It was gripping, intense, real --just the way a book should be-- and I loved it. I liked the way the story was told through family members as well. It helps the reader see the perspectives of those who loved Lori. It shows how her illness affected others.

Overall, The Quiet Room is a sad book. But it's inspiring and uplifting at the end. If Lori can make it through the horrors of schizophrenia, we can make it through our day-to-day lives of work, school, and dilemmas. This book gave me hope.

Every character is a cliche of many characters that have appeared in other lousy books and tv shows. The author doesn't even try to make anyone worth caring about. The characters make Paris Hilton seem complex and interesting.

This is typical of many so called mystery novels these days. The author follows some kind of lame format with pop culture laden characters and expect the readers to identify with them. I guess everyone is supposed to be shallow....

"A wonderful thriller set in the chilling cold of Duluth MN. Well written, a variety of intriguing characters, and almost as many twists and turns as a Jeffery Deaver novel. A winner!

Although I enjoyed his previous 2 novels, this one was his best to date. I loved the plot, the twists and turns and of course the main characters. The way he writes makes you feel like you're a native of Minnesota. You can actually feel the cold wind and snow.

I'm eagerly awaiting for his next novel to be published. I think that Brian Freeman is one of the most talented writers to come along recently.
I hope that he continues to stay true to his style of writing and stays with his suspense genre.

I have been hooked on Brian's books since I read "Immoral". Everyone should start with Immoral, and then Stripped, and then Stalked. I love continueing stories..I also had an opportunity to meet Brian and his wife at a recent book signing..VERY nice, genuine people.For fans of James Patterson, John Sanford...Brian ranks right up there!!!

Brian Freeman's "Stalked" is an edge-of-your-seat thriller with multiple plot twists and surprises that will keep you turning the pages way past your bedtime! Duluth detective Jonathan Stride and his lover Serena Dial search for a rapist/murderer who is out for revenge and destroying lives as he seeks his ultimate goal. I read this at night and couldn't sleep because of the adrenaline in my system when I finished!! Excellent read!

One of the best thrillers I've read. Well written, deep characters and a real surprise ending. Just the way I like a book to be.

All I can say is, "WOW"! This book is my pick for 2007 thus far! Great plot, great writing. The only thing is the author didn't have closure on the father and son relationship, though you are led to believe they made peace with each other and their past.

Smooth writing and engaging story with wonderfully original characters. A very fast read.

This book surprised me by being as good as it was. A lot of Christian suspense books get published just because they're "Christian", regardless of quality. But this book is right on par with a lot of suspense authors in the secular market I enjoy. There was excellent character development and the story line kept up a good pace, with a neat twist in the end.

Jude Allman had died, and been resurrected, three separate times by the age of thirty-one. The first time, he fell through the ice in a lake fishing when he was eight, the second time, he was hit by lightning in a field while hiking when he was sixteen, and the third time, he was driving in the ice and snow and skidded into a ditch when he was twenty-four. Jude wrote a book that he wished he hadn't, and combined with the notoriety from his "resurrection tri-fecta", he was very dispirited when he became immensely famous. He tried to hide from his unwanted fame by leaving town and using the name Ron Gress as an alias. As Jude/Ron disengages himself from the world, he becomes so paranoid, that he covers the inside of all the windows in his house with Sheetrock and installs a complex security system as well. Jude/Ron takes a job as a janitor at a school in a small town in Montana, and slides into a shrinking, introverted, paranoid, personality, that develops a natural aversion to human contact. He even has to sleep in a reclining chair because he's afraid to lay down in a bed.

As children start disappearing in towns in Montana, Jude/Ron starts getting strange copper tastes in his mouth, and visions, as a warning of impending danger to come, or as clues to save people already in trouble.

This first time author, deftly juggles multiple scenarios and plots simultaneously, like a seasoned writer. Some of the descriptive phrases he pulls from his writer's tool box are pretty enjoyable: "Streams poured from Jude's clothing as if he were a sunken treasure lifted to the surface after centuries in the murky depths." "A sweaty bald man with a paunch crawled into Jude's circle on his hands and knees. The lottery numbers, he hissed. Gimme the lottery numbers." "His father was talking about things that made no sense to him, scary things that crawled up and down his spine on icy legs." "An icy block of dread began to settle in his stomach." His lungs felt as if they were filled with spun fiberglass." "She felt a cold sliver of ice starting to wedge its way into her spine."


This story will keep you anxiously reading till the last page. This is a thriller that combines spirituality along with horrific modern crimes. I can only hope that this is the first of many more terrific books by this author.

Egoscue theraphy is excellant. Had past previous books on to friends, just re-supplying my library.

My doctor recommended this book to me after I had suffered a year with debilitating sciatica that caused me to have to take a leave of absence from my business. After reading the book, I understood why so many of use who are chained to desks and our computers have back pain. The book explains what happens when we are posturally imbalanced and how certain parts of the body have to overfunction when they are not aligned. The exercises are easy to do and they work. After I read the book, I was on the next plane to Pete Egoscue's clinic in San Diego. It took 6 months but I am pain free. If you can't get to one of his now many clinics, this is the book to start with.

This book is an excellent method to get back to optimal pain free living. It helped my back pain almost immediately. I have done the exercises for about 2 weeks and have had great results. It is the only self administered program I have found to be really effective.

Egoscue breaks down anatomy and physiology into easy to understand concepts, and provides pain relieving exercise that anyone can do! After years of being misaligned, I've already felt relief of pain and look forward to seeing the changes soon. If you're willing to work at it, I believe his methods can work for anyone!

This is the best book out there for anyone who has any sort of pain. The Egoscue Method has worked for more people than you could ever imagine. Yes, the method takes some time and if you dont do the exercises, you wont get better, but as long as you make it a priority, you can definately get it done. The really nice thing is that you can do many of these while you are watching TV. I highly recommend this book, I couldnt give it enough stars!
