This is a great book. For example, the chapters on obsessive compulsive and passive agressive personality give some great
direction for therapy. Knowing that an obsessive person fears making mistakes, that narcissism is part of obsessionality
and that a passive agressive person fears loss of autonomy can really guide treatment well.
On the other hand, the treatment of narcissistic personality disorder is weak. It just concentrates on how the patient should learn that the world does not revolve around them. It ignores the shame, need for validation and driven quality that narcissistic patients have and is reflected in their cognitions. In other words, the case used to treat NPD is of the oblivious type and in practice it is more common to see the hypervigilant type of narcisit. As CBT becomes more psychodynamic, this issue will be better addressed, I anticipate. (The oblivious narcisists are more antisocial and the vigilant ones are more on the anxiou/dependant end of the spectrum - I forget who's classification this is).

As someone who is avoidant co morbid with OCPD spent perhaps 40 years depressed more than not before reaching out for any
professional help I would like to say especially in the chapter on avoidants the book is pretty much dead on. The chapter
on avoidants is the one I can most closely relate to but I see myself in others as well my OCDP us most apparent in hoarding
issues a spot my therapist and I are having a hard time pushing me through I've been working with a therapist for about a
year and half now making progress even if it's slow. My therapist knows I am a person who likes to try and understand my
disorders and reads as much material as I can. We have both learned a lot together she being my motivator and supporter.
She has been outstanding doing her research to help develop plans of actions that have helped knock down some long standing
self built walls. She likes to kid me that I could teach a graduate class in personality disorders with all the reading I
have done.
To sum this up as a someone who has to deal with these issues as part of my daily life the book is right on with much of the way my thoughts/reactions are if I don't work actively to keep ahead of them to continue on my road to a happier life. And yes even as someone who came to therapy at a high functioning level in many aspects of my life I know at times I can be a frustrating client. But for me the knowledge that both my therapist and I are feeing increasing levels of frustration has been something I have been able to use to finally find the courage to knock down some long standing walls. So a special than you to those of you who choose to try and help those of us who present some special difficulties.

I love Aaron Beck, the founder of cognitive therapy. I think he has great insight into the various personality disorders.
This book is incredibly helpful. It includes all of the disorders, their way of thinking, they co-morbidity, their treatment,
case studies, and more. If you want one book on the treatment of personality disorders, this is the one to get.

Beck has done a great job describing a very pragmatic, common sense cognitive-behavioral methodology for the treatment of
challenging personalities. The research he has done builds confidence in practitioners interested in and using these methods.
Each personality style is well-described, and several strategies are provided for addressing these problematic dispositions.
The book is very well-organized and easy to read. Assignments and case examples further add to the utility of this text.

I am an avid reader of memoirs and I must say after all the memoirs I have personally read over the years THIS one took me
the least amount of time to get through. It was a book I simply couldn't put down!! Mr Silber is a man with a definite story
to tell and in the only way a man who was actually THERE can tell it! Simply fascinating! Bravo!!

I have worked professionaly with Mr. Silber and I believe him to be a truthful storyteller without ulterior motives. Reading
this book is like listening to his stories just as he has recounted them to me. I enjoyed the fact that this book is not
"as told to", nor is it glossed over with happy endings and filled out with sordid details. The photographs are marvelous,
the majority being taken by the author himself while on the job. This book reminds the reader that an era is gone and what
passes for entertainment these days is sad in comparison.

I like this book because the author, Arthur Silber Jr., was actually there during the so called "Rat Pack" days, and witnessed
these events first hand. Also, I come from a long entertainment background, and his show-biz vernacular is right on! It
is interesting to get a bird's eye view of this history, and this is a fabulous book.

This is an easy read and an excellent book defining the struggle of Sammy Davis Jr. as he worked to become a superstar, written
by his best friend who shared the life experiences with Sammy. No one else has written a book on Sammy Davis Jr., that I am
aware of, who has actually experienced a relationship with Sammy. The book has over 300 photographs most of which are obviously
from the personal photo album of the author. They give a wonderful validity to everything written in the book. People of Co
lor today may be surprised to learn just how much Sammy did to make their freedoms possible. This book is an excellent read.
By the way, I notice on your website that you list publisher as unknown. In fact, the publisher is Samart Enterprises, as
stated in the book, the company formed by Sammy and the author and still owned by Mr. Silber.

Me and My Shadow is a story filled with all the joy, love, pain, happiness and sorrow one could possibly live in a lifetime.
Being a black women and growing up in the era of racism and Jim Crow, I could feel the pain I was reading about. To color
Sammy's love for another and to label humans for sharing, showing and giving their love is the demarcation line that ran through
Sammy's life.
Through it all Arthur Silber gave me a glimpse of what true but sometimes complicated, unconditional love was all about.
My first thrill when I opened the book was to see all the spectacular photo's. I got a clear picture of Arthur and Sammy's life. The pictures were a treat for my eyes and it provided me with a window into their soul's.
Thank you Arthur for letting me in on the good, the bad and the ugly. Thank you for showing and telling me about Sammy's persuit of love and acceptance, in a world where being the proper color was everything and no matter how much talent Sammy had, he still was not able to walk through the front door.
To see two people share a relationship that was as close as a family member's without being blood is a true testament to Arthur and Sammy's character, in a time when being black meant, you stay on your side of the trackes.
The read was tasty, the pictures delectable and the story is Golden.

Great book of turnaround licks!

About a year ago a teacher/performer friend asked me who my first guitar teacher was. Larry McCabe, quite a few years ago.
My friend looked surprised, and told me he uses Larry's books in his own teaching, and that Larry had written something like
80 books to date. I had no idea, as Larry was in the process of writing his first book when I had lessons with him. So when
it came time to brush up on some basic blues licks for a band I'm in I ended up obtaining some of Larry's books.
This book of blues turnarounds is where I started. What a great book - full of excellent turnaround licks. At this point I've only played through about half of them note for note, but have used those as a basis for coming up with my own licks. And to me, that is the mark of a great book - lots of useful information if read note-for-note, but can also be used as a springboard for creating new ideas.
The licks I've learned from the book thus far are all in the key of C, but can be easily used in other keys if one has a basic knowledge of the notes on the fretboard. I'd highly recommend this book for a beginner wanting to learn stock blues licks, or intermediate players who need to expand their blues vocabulary.

An Excellent Choice for the Early Intermediate Blues Guitarist
A turnaround is a lick played at the end of a section of music. A blues turnaround would be played in measures 11-12 of a 12-bar blues, or measures 7-8 of an eight-bar blues.
Electric urban blues turnarounds are fairly easy to play, and the difference from one to another is subtle. Having the ability to play a variety of turnarounds is an important skill in blues guitar playing. This is the best book I know of that addresses exclusively the subject of electric blues guitar turnarounds.
This a book for a VERY ambitious beginner, or an early intermediate guitarist who has an interest in Chicago blues in the classic style of Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed, etc.
The licks are all arranged in the key of C. This is for ease of analysis and comparison. The user is encouraged to transpose the licks to other keys - a worthwhile project for exploring and learning the fingerboard. Very, very good practice for learning the art of blues phrasing.
Great book from one of our leading authors. My students (and myself) have consistently benefited from the interesting instruction contained here.

My students and I work from several of Larry McCabe's guitar books and find that the books produce consistently high results.
This book, like the others, is exceptionally well crafted, specific in intent, and the guitar lines are accurately written exactly as they are heard on the CD. Larry McCabe books are the work of a dedicated teacher who has achieved a high level of respect nationally in the field of music education.
Larry asked me to write a review for this book, and I am happy to do so. The object of this book is to teach the art of playing blues guitar turnarounds to a guitarist who has some prior experience but is just beginning to explore electric blues.
If a student knows how to bend the strings and perhaps play slurs, slides, and hammers, blues turnarounds are not difficult to play. What is important is to play them authentically and with conviction. This book does a very good job in advancing those objectives.
A component of this book that is quite effective is that every phrase is written in the Key of C. The student should then transpose each lick to other keys, a desirable skill that encourages individual incentive and ability to solve arranging problems.
The turnarounds sound exactly like the ones played on classic blues recordings by the great artists from Chicago and other urban areas.
I know other teachers who swear by Larry's books, and I am one of them. Great book- effective in its aims, ambitious content, fun to work through, and a great value.

This very fine book has been in print in one form or another since the early-to-mid 1980s. Not many music books remain in
print that long, but this is an exceptional collection of model solos in the urban blues style.
The book is quite popular with music teachers (as evidenced by the other reviews) and it is enjoyable and productive for students as well. The book is aimed at the ambitious early intermediate student, and a few of the solos will challenge an intermediate guitarist.
There are 25 full-length solos in the book, each written in notation and tablature, and each recorded note-for-note on the accompanying CD. The band on the CD is excellent. There are five solos in C, five in G, five in D, five in A, and five in E. The solos are played to standard blues progressions, meaning that they may be "plugged in" to similar blues progressions that are found in many, many songs.
The solos sound exactly like the solos heard on real blues records. They are varied and performed with taste, authenticity, and feeling. You can hear why the author was a columnist for Living Blues Magazine and why his work has received consistently high reviews in a number of guitar magazines.
Great book, highly recommended.

I wish all music instruction books were written in this format. The song tabs just go from one page to the next without a
bunch of talking/writing in between, and the song numbers in the book actually match the song numbers on the cd...what a rare
and unique idea! Of course, none of that would matter if the material were bad, but that's not the case, the solos are great
- quite diverse too. There is a lot of helpful information in this book: theory, writing your own solos, a guide to blues
styles and artists, etc. - but it's all in it's own section of the book, not sprinkled throughout the book here and there
making it impossible to find. As a full time guitar instructor I would just like to say "great job", "great blues solos" and
"great, easy to use format". Thanks.

The author of this book, Larry McCabe, is re-releasing books that have gone out of print for one reason or another. This
particular book is an old friend. After I received it, I went into my library and found a copy. It has been in print in
one form or another for 25 years. Most instruction books don't last anywhere near that long. First, this book (as the author
warns) is not for beginners. You need to be familiar with the movable blues scales we all use. If you are playing out, and
feel comfortable with the whole neck, get this book. The style of lead is closer to Gatemouth Brown and Freddie King than
anyone else. If you don't know who these men are, buy their CDs. You are in for a treat. Please read the author's introduction.
There is a lot of good info there. The Tab system is the older style. It should take about 30 seconds to adjust. It's actually
easier to read than the current form. If you consider yourself a Rock guitarist instead of Blues, you really could use this
book. If you use these solos as a "how to", instead of just memorizing them, they will give you some new weapons. You know,
for scaring the heck out of other guitarists.

Ancient Monuments (more familiarly known as "Squire and Davis") is the undisputed primary reference source on Indian mounds
in the eastern US till the mid-1800s. While there were a few others (such as Caleb Atwater's book), Squire and Davis offers
the grandest illustrations of what remained of the unbelievable civilizations that inhabited this continent. Even as they
published in 1848, hundreds of mounds were being plowed into oblivion; so few are still extant that theirs is the only guide
to what was lost. The text is enjoyable on many levels, and can be forgiven for any lapses of scientific accuracy. They
trekked over Ohio at a time when we weren't even sure who made the mounds, so everything they recorded is gold. The engineering
prowess, the sheer magnificence and scale of some of the works, is astounding.

This is the first issue of Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, which has been popular enough to continue even today,
years after Asimov's demise. To start off with a bang, this first edition included works by some of the sci-fi fields best
authors of the 20th century, including Arthur C. Clarke, Gordon R. Dickson, George O. Smith, John Varley, and Asimov himself.
I recall buying this around the time Star Wars came out; I was already a sci-fi buff, and that was a great time for it!

Irregardless Chef and Owner Arthur Gordon has been a significant presence on the culinary / restaurant scene in Raleigh for
more than 30 years. His time-proven recipes in "Irregardless Cooks" are classics that share common roots with another of
its contemporaries, "The Moosewood Cookbook".
"Irregardless Cooks" is now out-of-print with no current plans for re-issue. However, you can find it online as "used" from a variety of sources. By all means, be sure to get yourself a copy while you can still find them. And if you're ever in the Raleigh area, stop by the Irregardless Restaurant and Chef Gordon will be happy to sign your copy. Nice guy.
For those of you that already have a copy of "Irregardless Cooks" and want more great recipes from the restuarant's menu selections, Chef Gordon is writing a new cookbook which should be in print by mid to late 2007.

The book was good, it kept me interested until the end. I like the different stories somehow wishing it was more. I gave
away one for xmas, and am still waiting to hear from the person, but I am sure they will like it.
