"Don Bluth's Art Of Storyboard" is a great "crash-course" for those interested in storyboarding. I loved the references to musical tempo as well as the commentary on the boards of past Bluth films.

The storyboards for "The Secret Of NIMH" are covered in detail, and are among the most beautifully staged boards I've seen! Bluth (and crew) used pen and grey markers to convincingly portray texture, perspective, and relatively sophisticated lighting (personally, markers and I never got along, so I can appreciate the difficulty level). Many cinematography and acting cues seen in other, more technical books are cleverly and entertainingly utilized in the storyboards of films like "NIMH", "All Dogs Go To Heaven" and "Anastasia".

Overall I'd say this is an excellent tool for beginners. It can also be a great gift for the experienced story artist who just happens to be a Don Bluth fan...

I think this is a decent overview of the storyboarding process. OF course each of his subjects could require a college-level class and large book to seriously cover, but I appreciate Bluth's perspective on what he views as the signficant elements of the workflow and his explanation of why they are important.

This book was not what I thought it would be. The title is very misleading.

It's NOT a 'how-to-draw' of any of Don Bluth's characters. It has a more 'historical' feel to it.

It shows a few topical hand-drawn examples as it speaks on a topic, but it's not a how-to-draw book.

If you're interested in a broad overview of the animation process, then this will help you.

If, however, you're a fan of Don Bluth's characters and would like several step-by-step examples of how to draw them, then you will be diappointed.

Have a look at this book before you buy it. I was disappointed.

Emphasis on "Animation", not "Drawing"

I looked through this book at a bookstore. Its focus is on the animation process; it talks about backgrounds and models and voice actors, and it gives examples of how to match a character's mouth movements with a vocal track. It also shows how to punctuate a character's animation with frames that show extremes of emotion. There's a reason, though, why this is in the "Filmmaking" section of a bookstore, and not the "Drawing" section - the emphasis of the book is on the techniques used to bring an animated character to life, NOT on how to draw them. There are lots of pictures of lots of characters from lots of Bluth projects, everything from Banjo the Woodpile Cat to Dirk the Daring to Space Ace to Anastasia to Rasputin to Mrs. Brisby to Jenner and more, and the pictures would be really interesting to someone with some drawing skills; there are some character sheets in there, and lots of rough animation drawings showing the characters in various poses. This is not a "how-to", nor is it a comprehensive history of Bluth's work, but it's still a really interesting book.

It's always beneficial to have a simple book to guide you when animation gets complicated, and this is one of those books.

It has decent information. It goes over all the techniques that animators have used, including the authors own. This would be a book for a person who's beginning in animation.

Condensed version of the the movie The Secret Of NIMH....

This GoldenBook tells the story of the Don Bluth movie The Secrets of NIMH in a very condensed version. You get the main theme of the story without all the background information.

Still, a good story for children about Mrs. Brisby trying to move her home before the farmer plows his fields and the rats she must seek help from.

I thought I was buying a large book like the Art of Disney books, but it turns out this books has 98 pages instead of 192, which says so in the product details. So I was disappointed.
Other than that I think it's a fine book. If you're a fan of the film this is a book you should take a look at.

I really LOVE the wonderfully animated film Anastasia, so was happy to order this special book. Granted, I wondered why the retail price would be so high ($50?!) but I was lucky enough to buy it second-hand, for just about $12 after s+h. When it arrived, I noticed that it was skinnier than I thought it'd be. And every picture in it, I had already seen before in various places. So there was not much newness there. I haven't sat down to fully read it yet, tho I always enjoy learning how they make such masterpieces, but so far I do like gazing thru the pages, having only seen most of the pics thru a computer screen previously, and now that I can see them like this, they are just lovely. It's a book probably not worth the $50 main price - but if you can afford it at $20 and under, then definitely. I will always treasure it!

I am a big fan of Don Bluth and Gary Goldman so I liked their introductions in this book. For example, how they initially got a call from 20th Century Fox to create this feature. I liked the artwork that was featured in The Art of Anastasia, but I feel that the book could have been more in-depth. Deneroff could have written more about the process, the actual production of the feature, and perhaps mini-biographies of the people behind the film. However, the book should be fun for casual animation fans. Yet, true animation-philes may be somewhat disappointed.
