You will think that this was photoshopped, airbrushed, other otherwise tricked up. It's not. These are simple, real photgraphs of dancers that are hard to believe as real.

Modern dance is something not everyone understands. This collection will make you wonder how it is that human beings can create such kinetic sculpture with their bodies and some pieces of cloth.

Wonderful book. None of the photographs are tricked -- that is, all are usual perspectives, normal orientation (what looks like the floor at first glance really is), no strings, no unseen bars or plates, no studio retouching of former. (See LG's preface.) Truly amazing work.

A unique perspective of dance photography.

Big Beautiful Book. Great for the coffee table, sometimes that's what's necessary to share with the neighbors one's love of art. I fancy Giacometti's tall, emaciated figures.

Alberto Giacometti gave Western art perhaps the most persuasive and comprehensive view of the state of being human post WW2; eroded to its core yet still possessing the intelligence to think it way out of the mess it constantly makes for itself.

Yves Bonnefoy's book Giacometti is the definitive work on this artist and should be compulsory reading for anyone contemplating becoming a contemporary artist as it contains all the clues that would alow someone to understand such essential things as integrity and the balancing act between idea and artistry.

I really do not have words to describe my feelings about this book. It has absolutely wonderful paintings to illustrate it and the writing is sensitive, understandable, and a tribute to women and a way of life that I knew nothing about. It celebrates the human spirit in words and images from the artist/author. I've lent this book to people I know and each one has been impressed.

My mom, an artist, received this book as a gift. I was intrigued by the paintings, started reading it and found I could not put it down. The life lessons spoken/lived by Alfreda and her friends touched my heart. If only we could all live accordingly. A deeply moving book. A wonderfully inspiring gift of encouragement.

Alfredo Arreguin's paintings are spectacular. Arreguin is one of the most important and awe-inspiring artists of the age. This book does an excellent job of detailing his life and art, as well as duplicating the intense colors of his canvasses. I cannot recommend this book enough. It would be a delight on the coffee table or as a gift.

If you want intense color, intricate patterns and a forever drifting, shifting visual experience, then this book is the Intro to Arreguin for you! There is a color plate on most pages and the text is in English and Spanish in side-by side columns.

This book is so low-priced because 1) the publishers found donors to underwrite this first edition 2) Arreguin is not making a dime in royalties off this book.

If you don't know Arreguin's work yet, just type "Alfredo Arreguin" into your browser's search box and you will get several relevant hits.

Try it, you'll like it!

I bought five copies: four copies for gifts, and one copy for me.

The story of Arreguin's childhood and family turmoil will add some optimism and empathy for troubled children of divorced parents, I hope.

Fascinating Story

Review Date: 2007-02-06
As a storyteller I love to tell stories by Hans Christian Anderson and was thrilled to find out he was an accomplished cutter of paper. While his paper cuttings are much more intricate than the ones I do when I tell stories, the author helped me to understand that his ability to tell stories while cutting paper is a good way to keep the attention of small children. I found that "Grandma's Magic Scissors" by Linda S. Day was a good book to learn basic paper cutting skills and hope that someday I can learn to cut the intricate designs that this master storyteller cut, although I think I will carry my scissors in a bag and not my boot.

I'm a paper artist who also happens to be a Hans Christian Andersen fan. I bought the book for myself, although it would be a terrific selection for a child who likes to use scissors and glue or who might be interested in the person behind some of their favorite fairy tales. It's hard to find many printed examples outside of Denmark of Hans Christian Andersen's cut paper work. Beth Wagner Brust is a paper cutter herself and brings this enthusiasm to her book. She has performed a great service for Andersen fans and paper cutters of all ages.

Like so many Americans, I had no idea HC Andersen was a paper-cutting genius, until reading the series of articles by Ms. Brust in the LA Times. Not to mention that he cut these "amazing" intricate pieces while telling one of his stories to a roomful of listeners at the same time.

The book's a treasure in that I feel like I've discovered gold within. Not simply a children's book, it's so well written and full of surprises, I think it will appeal to readers of all ages, from the casually curious child or adult to the Andersen enthusiast like me.

The World according to Carmine Infantino is a deep, look into one of the industries giants. Full of clever writing, and lots of historic analogies and tidbits of life in the times.

Reviews Carmine's career from day 1 (birth) all the way to modern time. When you read this and see what this man has brought to field of Art, you immediately want to go grab up everything you have orcan get by him just to see in more detail what has gone on in the background of these pulp paper gems of art history.

Cleverly done, the book appears as if it could have been part of a series of treatises on the men who made comics what they are today.

Very enjoyable, one of those you cant put it down til your done type of books, that you will have no regrets purchasing.

This wonderful book tells the story of Carmine Infantino- one of the true legends of the comic's biz. In addition to being one of the most prolific cover artists of DC's Silver Age, Infantino is credited with a host of distinctions. He drew Green Lantern and the Flash during the Golden Age and co-created Black Canary. He designed the look for Barry Allen and as such is the very first artist to draw the Silver Age Flash for Show Case #4- credited with launching the Silver Age of Comics. His artwork is generally regarded as the very best to ever grace the covers and pages of the Flash. His work on Adam Strange outsold all other Sci-Fi comics before or since with the exception of one title- Star Wars (and it was Infantino himself who, as the artist drawing the early Star Wars comics for Marvel, helped the series beat his own record on Mystery in Space). He also designed and was the first artist to draw Barbara Gordon as Batgirl, creating the Silver Age character that would go on to appear in the hugely popular Adam West and Burt Ward TV show. He also created a new Batman villain, Poison Ivy. His other credits include Airboy, the JLA, Spider-Woman, Suberboy, Charlie Chan, and other titles too numerous to list. Perhaps most importantly Infantino is credited with saving the Batman line of comics from cancellation with his "new look" Batman, re-designed Batmobile and other Bat gadgets. He became editor, publisher, and ultimately president of DC Comics. "The Amazing World of Carmine Infantino" is a true must buy for any comics fan!

Amelia Bedelia visits an art museum
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-11
Amelia Bedelia visits an art museum. She is immediately fooled by a sculpture called Birdwatcher, convinced that this work of art is a real person. Mrs. Rogers introduces her to Arthur Stiles, the director of the museum, who suggests that she look around the museum and then they'll figure out a way she can help as their newest volunteer.

At the gift shop, Amelia Bedelia purchases a genuine reproduction of a bust (a sculpture of the head, shoulders and chest) that looks just like Cousin Alcolu. She heads off to explore the museum and immediately comes across the real bust of Cousin Alcolu. Noticing that the bust she bought (which she refers to as a "real fake") is in better shape than the original one, Amelia Bedelia swaps the busts. She places the "worth less" one on the pedestal and puts the "price less" one in her bag so she can take it home and clean it up.

It looks like Amelia Bedelia hasn't made such a wise decision, right? Little does our literal-minded housekeeper know that this one action will have serious consequences for herself, Mrs. Rogers, Art and the museum. Will her entire visit be a bust?

The BEST Amelia Bedelia yet!

I have been reading the Amelia Bedelia books for as long as I can remember. When I found out that I could review one, I told my mom to get it right away! I think that this book was really good. It was the best one yet in my opinion.

In this book, Amelia Bedelia had to work for an art museum because it was low on staff. She was asked to help out. She found a bus that looked like Cousin Alcolu's bus and she wanted to buy it. Then, when she was walking around doing her job, she saw a painter copying a painting to learn how to paint better. Later, she saw the same person switch his painting for the real one and walk away. Amelia Bedelia alerted everyone and they locked the doors. They caught this person thanks to Amelia Bedelia.

Amelia Bedelia is a funny character and I look forward to reviewing more of these books! "Amelia Bedelia's Masterpiece" by Herman Parish was really good.

Amelia Bedelia's Masterpiece is filled with glorious illustrations that move the story along and underscore the meaning of the word play.

I thought the book had a cute story. My 5 3/4 year old daughter loves to read Amelia Bedelia's.
She found this story a little slow in the beginning, and would only read 4 or 5 pages at a time. About the middle of the book the pace picked up and she enjoyed the story more once the artist stole a painting, and a little boy created artwork on the blank walls.

I would like to add to the reviews below that this book is a pleasure to hold and to view because it is so well made. If there is any 'art' book that should be made for posterity it is the catalog raisonne of an artist. In this instance, the publisher has done the artist's audience a real service for, the book is beautifully printed and bound in Italy by Amilcare Pizzi; Italy seeming to have usurped Switzerland's place as the world's premier art book printer. The pages are thick and glossy and the reproduction is top notch.
For those of you who are unaware of what a catalog raisonne is, it is meant to be a compilation and historical record of an artist's work that documents execution date, medium, size of image or plate, size of edition if a print, whether signed or unsigned, etc. This information is used by artists, historians, collectors and dealers to attribute a piece of art and place it in the artist's oevre, and of course to aid in placing relative value on it. Here too, the archivists, publisher, and editor have done a fine job of documenting the relevant facts. This is especially important in the case of Warhol who was a serial printer, sometimes to the point of intentional promiscuity. So, the fact that wherever possible relevant information is provided speaks volumes about the prodigious effort that must have gone into this undertaking. I rate this book four stars because I fear that since this is the third edition, there will be yet another edition published that renders this one obsolete. I understand this is precisely because Warhol was an inprecise documentarian, when he chose to do so at all, but I don't relish having to purchase another high dollar, though valuable book that is only slightly different from the one I already own. For people who don't give a darn, the book rates a five.
