PAPERBACK VERSION

I got this one in hardback from the public library before I bought this paperback version. I liked the hardback version, but I was disappointed with the paperback version and here's why:

It appears as if the pictures are copies of copies of copies taken out of the the original hardback and copied right on some copier rather than done correctly all over again, and there is at least one VERY GOOD picture M I S S I N G!!!!--one of my favorites--where Bob is reading a magazine or paper up close and he has his hat on. NOT DONE RIGHT IS ALSO A TOP FAVORITE: the one where Bob Dylan is playing chess at a French cafe--REALLY REALLY GOOD ONE, I love that one very much--but it still seems COPY OF COPY OF COPY quality--IT IS DARK AND GRITTY. The quality of the pictures in the original hardback book are FAR superior. and I SEE it. I did a copy of the one at the cafe on a copier before I returned the book to the library and believe me it is BETTER quality than the one in this paperback version!!! AAAAHHHHH!!! Maybe people won't notice, but I do notice it. Unfortunately I had to return the hardback book to the library.

P L E A S E TELL THE PUBLISHER TO R E D O THIS BOOK PROPERLY AND RESPECT Bob Dylan's fans because we want quality pictures. This book deserves to be done again properly. Paperback is okay to save the forests, but the quality of the pictures has something to do with the process and technology that they use. They just dished out a paperback version and copied the pictures from some other copies (as I see it) just to make money with no concern about the QUALITY OF THE PICTURES.

May I also suggest Dylan: Visions, Portraits & Back Pages as a book with FAR FAR FAR FAR SUPERIOR quality pictures and it even costs less!

Please do this PICTURE BOOK all over again, PUBLISHERS!!! These pictures deserve FIRST QUALITY production.

These photos will absolutely break your heart.
They will break your heart absolutely. If you love Dylan and the mythology he created around himself, this book will give you a glimpse behind the curtain. The images of Joan Baez and Dylan are so gorgeous you'll want to duck out of your busy life and cry for five crucial minutes. The image of a back-lit Bob and a shadowy Joan in profile is a just, simple ode to these monoliths. These photos give us what we've intimated about Bob all along.

This seems to be a reprint of a book that first came out in the 60's. I still have my copy but it's a smaller format than this reprint. It is chock full of great photos of Dylan being whimsical and eccentric, posing in a studio setting. Very professional. All seem to be from the "Highway 61 Revisited" period (1965)when Dylan affected a "mod" style of clothes, including polka-dot shirts and Beatle boots. This is a treasure for any Dylan addict. Except for one essay, the book is all photos without text.

Changed My Life

I discovered Brion Gysin in the late 1980s through my interest in the band Psychic TV. In the summer of 1987, after my freshman year of college, my roommate and I flew from Detroit out to Portland Oregon to transport a car from there back to the East Coast. While in Portland I purchased a copy of this book from a little music shop called the Ooze. My friend and I then took turns reading it aloud to each other as we drove.

While I have little recollection of the specific content of the book itself, I know that my copy of it is one of the only books still on my shelves that was made to be ragged and worn from reading and re-reading it back in those days. For years I had a dream machine set up in my room, and I feel I owe much of my brain's wiring to the influence of Brion Gysin.

If you are interested in the so-called "beat generation" but want to go to a different place than all the drugs and drifter stuff will take you, then I strongly recommend that you pick up a copy of this book and get to work.

I came across this book (and to Gysin himself) through my interest in William Burroughs. Many who read this book will do so for this reason, as Burroughs cites Gysin as one of the primary influences on his life. This is basically a book of interviews with book excerpts thrown in. It doesn't seem to be organised with any great system, and nor does Gysin's thought seem to be easily pigeonholed. (As he says himself in this book) Some of the conversations and ideas in here are extremely interesting, however. Gysin has a fairly unique take on humanity. He calls himself a monumental misanthrope, claiming that man is a 'bad animal.' At the same time, he seems to be a severe misogynist, having no time for women. Despite this, there is something appealing about this book. Gysin is an extreme critic of Western civilisation, preferring indigenous cultures.

This is worth reading for two reasons.

1. To learn more about Burroughs' muse and greatest influence.
2. To learn about the worldview of Gysin himself, who is nothing if not interesting.

This book serves as in introduction to the thought of Gysin, which I imagine would be better explicated in other, more recent books on him. There is a recent biography I am interested in reading, as well as a collection of Gysin's paintings (which are interesting in themselves). 'Here to Go' is also an attractive, well presented volume. I can recommend it wholeheartedly.

A title that was lost to Savoy during the Savoy Books Ltd raids and eventual collapse of 1981. The book was conceived, commissioned, and co-edited by Michael Butterworth, who was left uncredited by Terry Wilson. WSB wrote the introduction. Butterworth commissioned a first interview for his small press magazine Wordworks, but other interviews followed after Butterworth conceived the idea of publishing a book based on Gysin's life and ideas similar to the Third Mind, a book Gysin co-wrote with Burroughs compiling their cut-ups and collaborations. Genesis P Orridge who published it in RE/Search finally found the book. The book covers such topics as the cut-up discovery, mirror-staring (a step leading to personality switching), drugs, sex, days in Northern Africa, Hassan I Sabbah, transcendentalism, viruses, and space travel. Claimed to be far superior to Bockris's book, Here to Go presents both artists with more insight and less heavy-handed pedantry. Wilson writes with many positive qualities that stand out, leaving the readers curious for more. A good introduction into the minds of two fascinating artists.

A great piece to have, I recommend it to anyone interested in Brion Gysin, as well as for any serious reader of W.S. Burroughs. The conversations are comprehensive, Terry Wilson is obviously not just some rube who happened to speak with Gysin. It covers philosophy, art, life, music, permutations, cut-ups, religion, nearly everything across the board, with some excellent stories by Mr. Gysin appearing throughout. It's a shame that so little information about this man is readily available. Undoubtedly one of the most important artists/people of the 20th century. Now all we need is for The Third Mind to be reissued, along with everything else. (Anyone heard of a guy named "Flash Allen"? Supposedly there is a film called "Brion Gysin" made by him, but there seems to be no information about this anywhere.)

a.n.

(the book also has hard to find excerpts by Mr. Gysin and Mr. Burroughs from no longer extant writings as well as photographs)
(I gave it 4 stars because some of the calligraphy is noticeably pixelated, which gave it an amateurish kind of look, though the photographs do not have the same problem)

An excellent, albeit silliy, addition to the library or coffee table of Brooklynites of any age. Granted, it isn't "all-inclusive," but what pop-up book (or any book on Brooklyn, for that matter) is?

Overall, fun and colorful.

Each foldout page in this book was designed by a different person. Sometimes they're disappointing as pop-ups, but there are some bright moments. The cover by Maurice Sendak allows you to see behind it into how the movements are made. The brownstones page is silly, with stupid bug cartoons everywhere. The library is really disappointing, with no real focus and no real view of what the building looks like. The art museum is just lovely, and is probably the best -- but then, it's by Sabuda (my favorite pop-up artist)! The botanic garden could have been the most colorful and beautiful page -- instead, it's childish and dull. The carousel is fun, with horses popping out at you. The Brooklyn Bridge is nice, but the flavors of Brooklyn are worthless. Coney Island is fun, with a rotating Ferris wheel. The book comes in a handy-dandy re-sealable plastic cover. So if you're fond of Brooklyn this will be a really nice memento. But I do NOT recommend it for reading out loud to children.

A delightfully colorful whimsy. Beautifully designed by an array of talented artists, including Maurice Sendak, specialists in pop-up engineering and all the pieces lovingly put together in Ecuador. My favorite? Two pages topped with old postcard letters-- "CONEY ISLAND." The beach front is covered with mini-bathers frolicking in and out of the water while the rollercoaster rolls by and the ferris wheel spins. There's a great boardwalk and everything that you could want at Coney Island. The only thing missing from the scene is Nathan's. There's an amazing Brooklyn Bridge, and lots of information for all ages about the history of that special borough....

It is really nice to see a resurgence of such childhood favorites as the "pop-up" book. Truly the first multimedia toys, these books add a new dimension (pun most certainly intended) to the written word.

What a wonderful way to introduce children and adults alike to the cultural Mecca that is Brooklyn. I loved this book so much, not only did I buy it for my library's children's collection, but I also bought a copy for myself.

Highly, highly recommended!

I got this because it's got Susan Seddon Boulet as the illustrator. That's all. And that's more than worth it. The pictures here are so beautiful...if you have the Retrospective book, then you've only seen a very small portion of the visual feast that is Buffalo Gals.

The story...the story is an odd one. Fan's of Charles de Lint will like this book, for the characters are very similar to his "animal people." The idea of a female Coyote demi-diety is great! However, the ending was a little rushed and contrived. I actually blinked and re-read the last few paragraphs to make sure that I hadn't missed something.

This is a marvellous collaboration between a wonderful writer and superb artist. Le Guin's captivating story is brought to life by Boulet's dynamic paintings.

It is a story of the relationships among humans, animals and nature as the old ones, the animals, struggle to adapt and survive amid human expansion into their realm.

This subject is a natural for Boulet, whose work has always focused on these themes. There are 22 paintings of animals given human characteristics so vivid you feel you can see into their souls.

This is a wonderful book for an older child. It subtly teaches important lessons in life with a very entertaining story. Any fan Boulet's work will find it a welcome addition to their library.

At first glance I thought that Buffalo Gals, Won't You Come Out Tonight was a children's book, but flipping through I was soon corrected. Though set in a fairy tale format, it is definitely a story for adults (and older children as well) and is a beautifully written Ursula LeGuin classic. I read the book in one go, not a hard feat considering it's a short read, but every line and page is masterfully done and I could have hardly put the book down if I had wanted to - the story pulls you in and fascinates. The illustrations are also very inspired and go perfectly hand-in-hand with the story - a wonderfully synergistic combination. A must read for every Ursula LeGuin fan.

What a powerful combination of work. I haven't seen this particular version of Buffalo Gals (have a weathered paperback copy from a used book shop), but it is such a wonderful collection of stories. I especially like the story for which the book is named. And Boulet was a phenomenal visual artist, her spirit definitely lives on in her work. I can just imagine what a nice gift a copy of this book would be for someone. To pair the art of these wonder-women was a real act of genius.

This is a real eye opener of a book if you are looking for an in depth retrospective of the artist's body of work! Burne-Jones is at last receiving his fair due of recognition as witnessed by the recent Met show in the Summer of 1998. This book showcases his many merits, including a unerring color and design technique applied to fantastical subjects. What makes the book so irresistible is the wealth of color plates accompanied by detailed explanations. It also helps that the authors were thoughtful enough to leave out any stuffy, academic narrative that overburdens this genre.

To visit the Burne-Jones exhibition at New York's Metropolitain Museum of Art is a thrill beyond describing. It is like being surrounded by old friends of the sort usually found in dreams. The stunning, fully illustrated catalogue that accompanies the show is perhaps the best catalogue I have seen, most notably for its impeccable and stimulating essays, and for its phenominal wealth of color reproductions. This book is a stunner, despite two or three flipped pictures( which I guess could happen to anyone in the rush to get such an involved publication ready in time!) I would advise all bookshops, libraries and Burne-Jones lovers to order this book now for its September release. It is sure to be the most valuable book on its subject for many years to come.

Tad Crawford has written a whole series of books out of his expertise in the law and creative arts, with a special focus on photography. I'd suggest looking at Tad's other books, too, since this one is more action-focused without extensive explanations of the whys and wherefores of it.

"Business and Legal Forms" has the documents you'll need, such as copyright transer forms, publishing contracts and stock listing forms for your creative work. His descriptions are very helpful. Of greatest practical use, though, is the included DVD containing MS Word documents of all of the forms.

If you're just getting started in fine arts, or even if you have been working a while, you need this book!

Kiri is very excited when she gets a origami kit from her aunt as a birthday gift. She tries right away to make a butterfly with the kit. After several tries she gets fustrated with it and almost gives up. As she practices she gets better and better. Instructions are included on how to make your ouw butterfly. Remember it's not easy and you will have to work on it just like Kiri but it will be really neat in the end.

The story has a great lesson. The lesson I learned from this story is that practice makes perfect and to never give up.
This book would be neat to share in the classroom or at a storytime while learning about origami and or Asian countries.

-SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL:
"A Japanese American child receives an origami kit for her birthday. The brightly colored papers are "as thin as butterfly wings" and she handles them with care and reverence, spreading them out "like a rainbow." Kiri pores over the diagrams in the instruction book and tries to "Fold crisply" and "Crease sharply!" The steps become more complicated and when the delicate sheet tears, she cries in frustration. Afraid of ripping another piece, she puts the papers away. As time passes, Kiri enjoys other artistic pursuits, like painting and chalk drawing, but she is still intrigued by the art of origami and continues to practice her folds on notebook paper. When her watercolors run together on make a soggy hole in the center of her picture, she finds another use for the origami papers. she cuts out flower shapes and as she glues them on her painting, "The colors began to dance." Feeling emboldened, she selects a sheet of yellow paper and sucessfully folds a butterfly. Falwell's cut-and-torn paper collages are the perfect medium for the story. Kiri's disappointments are realistically captured, as is her creative spirit. Instructions on how to make an origami butterfly are included.
-BOOKLIST:
"Colorful and bright, this story of frustration and determination will appeal to children who have experienced both . . . . The cut-and-torn paper collages are just the right medium for this story, and Falwell uses her papers to good effect-sometimes very simply, sometimes in elaborate ways-to capture both the enthusiasm of the child and the enthusiasm apparent in Kiri's art. A final page offers instructions for making an origami butterfly; as with Kiri, it may take children awhile to master the project, but they should enjoy practicing."
MORNING NEWS:
"Butterflies gives young readers the feeling of having a book in a book with Kiri's own story of her birthday treasure. More practically, readers can try out origami using some of the instructions included in the story. Author/illustrator Cathryn Falwell cleverly spreads the joy through Kiri's own words as she calls out the instructions from her book, "'Fold crisply. Crease sharply.' the book said." Kids, try the step-by-step picture instructions at the end of the book to make your own origami butterfly. It looks easy enough even for grown-ups. -THE DALLAS

My children and I were delighted to find this new book by one of our favorite author illustrators. Kiri struggles with learning a new skill the same way my little perfectionist 7-yr-old daughter does. The way Kiri explores her own creative expression while continuing to patiently practice the folding of the origami is really beautiful. When both of these parts come together at the end of the story, Kiri's imagination dances free. My daughter found a kindred spirit in Kiri. The illustrations are gorgeous. My younger children also enjoyed this book.

I really loved this book. I have already ordered one for all the children on my Christmas list. The story and illustrations are fun and imaginative while also teaching the reader about many different styles of art and art movements. There is even some french mixed in when Camille (the main charecter) is in Paris. The lesson, however, does not come as an expense to the excitement and fun of the story. Most children won't even realize they are learning as they meet Camille and discover her amazing talent, go with her to Paris as she unwittingly helps two crooks while hanging in the Louvre and later discover her true worth lies within herself not in her "fakes". As children and adults read this book by Mrs. Overall, it's a great way to prompt discussion and questions about art and its history. I think all art departments in every school should have this book. What a wonderful and effective way to open childrens mind to the world of art.

I am the author and illustrator of this book and I want to let parents and teachers know about the resource that I have compiled for the book. I have created a website that not only features the artists and art styles mentioned in the story but also showcases the works of other artists. Quicktime movies offer an intimate view of these people and their works. Children are also encouraged to submit their works to the Kids' Art Gallery, Chat and paint together throught the interactive paint site & write the artists. Have a look! http://www.maryjaneoverall.com.au

Camille's Fakes is an great tool for kids. It makes learning about art a fun experience for all. Combined with the web resources my kids were able to discover more about the subjects discussed. My 7 year old enjoyed reading through it, but my 12 year old enjoyed the book-web combination most. It seems like this should be a great resource for k-8 school's.

Camille's Fakes is an excellent children's book. The story is centered around a young artist and her adventures in Paris. The exciting story moves well and the illustrations are unique. You even get to learn about art history. Most importantly my little sister loves it!
