...any half-way competent prosecutor, given the license and budget and political backing that Ken Starr had should have been able to get indictments against Mahatma Ghandi, Mother Teresa and the Pope, let alone a good ol' boy politician from Arkansas.

Starr got NOTHING of any importance that stood up.

Why wasn't this effort spent investigating the TALIBAN?

40 million dollars. 200 FBI agents. Had the FBI at this point in our history, been able to do their jobs tracking down terrorist cells and putting their ears to the ground, instead of being pushed by enemies of Clinton obsessed with ruining him at all costs (funded by us tax payers) , to waste thousands of person-hours trying to destroy a man and reverse his election, due to a private failing that should have been between Clinton, his God, and his family, perhaps 9-11 would have never happened.

Really, really sad. I'd like to see these people held accountable, the people like Starr who had nothing better to do than to contemplate the sex life of a president.

In light of the strong support by the Slavs for their "not so presidential" president (Milosovic) in Yugoslavia, I can see now a great number of people in our country who consider "truth" (The Starr Report) as not so valuable. The truth I speak of isn't about the solacious material here in this book but the lawbreaking of our leader, Bill Clinton. The parallel here is amazing and disheartening. Mr. Starr, your book does have value to those who embrace truth.

Do you see the irony here for Clinton and the people of the United States who embraced lying and dishonor??? What goes around comes around but the innocents always suffer for their leaders' judgements. Just wait.

In the greatest of ironies, the same conservatives who were for fiscal accountability and against state surveilence, attempted to engineer one of the most undemocratic actions in reccent history. Sexual McCarthyism would not be an overexaggerated way to describe all of the hypocricy and danger the GOP placed the constution and American people in during this period. McCarthy would be very proud his likeness still has a home among conservatives.

Without excusing the president's conduct, one can plainly see that Starr reacted in overkill to the incident. Having elected him twice, the American people knew about Clinton's womanizing and did not really care. We believed the best person to penalize him would be Hillary, and the state should stay out of personal matters. If the state could intrude into the private lives of the first family, what hope would there really be for the average citizens?

Convinently, the right only embraces big government when it can be used to investigate and prosecute political dissidents. How else to explain wht the president's penis is dicussed in graphic detail?

For all of the bellyaching about Clinton's connections and alleged political wrongdoings. the biggest source of political corruption in this era was Kenneth W. Starr and colleagues. My sympathies to anybody related to this modern facist, we know you have suffered the most.

I am currently teaching my first year of medical biochemistry and this book is a nice balance. Not as "hard core" on the chemistry as Voet & Voet, but more comprehensive than Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews or Baynes and Dominiczak's Medical Biochemistry. Similar in depth to Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry but slightly less emphasis on the medical aspects. Decent illustrations and the clinical coorelations boxed seperately within the text is a nice feature.

I wanted to get a textbook that allows me to get up to speed again with mammalian biochemistry and I bought this book in preference to more general textbooks. And on the whole I am impressed - the writing and the diagrams are clear and accurate. There is one issue however that has made a serious black mark: units. I would expect a modern textbook to use SI units throughout. The problem here is that the book skips between Calories and Joules almost at random depending upon the particular author involved. The chapter on Bioenergetics gloriously uses both - but in different parts of the chapter (for example Free-Energy Change for hexokinase is in kcals whereas the section on Free-Energy Changes in redox reactions is in joules! - without the other unit in both cases). I have an elderly copy of Lehninger from the 1970's that exclusively uses SI units and so to see a modern (2005) book still using Calories is deeply disappointing. Yes it's an irritant (even I can convert between joules and calories - 4.18) and shouldn't detract from the book but thats not the point. It just shouldn't happen and it reflects badly on the general editor

I had to use this book for my Biochemistry class. My major is Nutrition & Dietetics, and I already graduated. This book is just awful. Like someone else wrote, if you need to find a term or a figure, you have to look in almost the whole book, and you may still won't understand what you were looking for, or even worse, you'll get more confused. Devlin finds the hardest way to explain an easy term or fact you can explain a lot easier. This is just not worth it. Do not buy this book, there are other books a lot better.

Senior in college,
double major Biology and Chemistry.
This is the worst book I have ever used.
Two brief examples..
looking for a figure? On the previous (or next) page or 100pages further down the book.
Thought Marcel Proust could write endless sentences? Hold on! devlin can spend four to five lines, with "bold term" to explain something you won't understand the 10th time around.
Don't waste your time, don't waste your money....stay away from this mess of a book.

I respect Loyd Auerbach immensely, but the chapters in this book are so longwinded when it comes to psi abilities that it leaves non-psychic investigators out of the loop. I understand that Mr. Auerbach is a mentalist but when writing a book with the subcaption: How to Investigate the paranormal, you'd expect it to be for people of non-psychic ability as well.
Overall the book is informative if you have "medium" abilities but does little for the regular investigative scientist.

I was hoping to get much more from this book based on the author's reputation, but the material is basic at best. It's more of a Ghost Hunting 101 pre-course. What was extremely irritating about this book was the number of typos. It seemed almost every page contained a typo that any fifth grader could have picked up on. The horrible editing on this book was a real distraction.

This book is a total cash-in for Auerbach. His investigations are completely non-critical, the tips he shares are common-sense at best, and a cloying sense of self-importance permeates the entire book. The goofy "Halloween at the local elementary school" illustrations give the general public one more reason to look at paranormal investigators as New-Agey Shaggy and Scooby wannabe's. Thanks Loyd.

Having just joined an established paranormal research group, I wanted to read some books on the actual process of investigations, so I would have a better idea of what to do while out on the field. I've spent much of my life studying paranormal phenomena, but up until now, have not been able to get hands on, so to speak.

This book is exactly what I was looking for, as it covers everything from how to use the equipment to conducting interviews with potential clients. It is very detailed and informative for anyone who takes this subject as seriously as I do, and while some of the reading is rather dry, or even slow paced; the fact is, you can immediately put this stuff into practice when going out on an investigation, hence my reasoning for the five star rating.

Any amateur can take a camcorder and a voice recorder and claim to be a ghost hunter; but if you want to make this a serious endeavour by starting your own group, or joining an existing one, you owe it to yourself to read this book first. You'll learn quite a bit from 'professor paranormal'.

This book is a good basic overview of the industry from the journalist's perspective. Covers such issues as licenses and trademarks, business plan and contracts, releases and promotion. The intro seems a little long-winded, but one could skip over that. Roni does answer one question clearly, though: "For most indies, BMI proves the preferable performing rights organization since it monitors college and public radio stations which are more apt to play indie records." Read the book, but don't buy it - check it out from the library.

Fortunately there are books around that can help you reach your goal faster and with much more ease, and this is one of them. It covers a lot of the aspects, twists and turns in the music industry but it misses out on some very crucial points which are presented in "Ty Cohen's Secrets to Making Money in the Music Industry (3-Piece Mega Audio CD Set)" by Ty Cohen " , a better and more detailed book about the subject, and an easier one too.

This book is NOT suited for electrical engineers who want to learn SCADA. It is, however, adequate for business men or managers who would like to acquire a general (very general indeed)understanding of SCADA terminology. Themes within the book are treated superficially sometimes, with a greater depth in others (such as when addressing protocols) that is not consistent nor coherent. I do not recommend this book for a Power Systems Engineer, student of such systems, or any electric or electronic engineer that wishes to understand SCADA.

Info: I read the 3rd edition what was published in 2004.

General: The book is easy to read and does not keep repeating itself. The chapters are ordered in a way that seems logical.

Bookcontent:
70% of the book has nothing to do with SCADA but is informing you on ways of communicating, which can be used for SCADA. This part was written in a time that a 1200 baud modem was state of the art equipment AND THAT WAS NOT 2004! The rest of the book gives you a global idea what the difference is between RTU's and MTU's and what they can do. Based on the fact that the communication part is completely outdated this will be as well. It did not give me any additional information on what I already new.

Excellent for training

Review Date: 2002-02-04
For training technicians, this book provides an excellent introduction to how SCADA systems work. Most of the more detailed system information requires training and manuals from specific vendors who usually provide good information on their products but little in the way of a system-wide view.

I found this book to contain mostly dated, simplistic information and believe it to be unsuitable for an engineer. It will NOT advance the expertise of anyone with even minor expertise in this field. I'm stunned that it has ISA backing and is a second edition. Don't waste your time on this book unless you need only a casual, conceptual understanding of this subject.

A timely, accurate report of multicultural excess

Review Date: 2000-07-07
Finally, a book that accurately reveals the tyrannical dictatorship of the multicultural ideologues on American campuses. As a college philosophy instructor, the predicament portrayed by the authors of this excellent book strikes home all too accurately for me. This volume should be required reading on every campus that has a "Multicultural Day," as does mine. If anything, the authors understate the case against the academic despotism of race, class, gender and sexual orientation preferences. Clearly, those "tenured radicals" who protest too much only prove the point further. Buy several copies of this book: keep one, donate one to your college and local library, and give one to a friend. Congratulations to Sacks and Thiel for having the courage to swim against the ideologically polluted academic current of today's campuses.

Overblown
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-08
This book came out in the early 90's and attempts to shed light on the goings-on at Standford at the time. The authors express dismay at what they argue was the dumbing down of Stanford curricula, attacks on Western civilization, and a powerful multicultural ideology that permeated every aspect of the campus bringing it to its intellectual and social knees.

The book details a number of admittedly ridiculous events that occured on campus (although sources are questionable), while others were quite serious. The authors often have an inverted or biased interpretation of the events which becomes clear to the objective reader. Greedy and corrupt campus officials are not individuals making bad choices - they're people who are part and parcel of a so called multicultural movement/ideology/culture that gives them carte blanche to do what they want. Racial identity politics is said to be a dangerous offshoot of the new ideology yet this is something that has been with us for centuries, long before 'multiculturalism' got started. American slavery based on racial affiliation is a stark example of racial identity politics.

The book overemphasizes problems on the campus and links these problems to the presence of a multiculural ideology. The same problems would be found in any era at any time for any cross section of society. It is not necessarily the sign of a radically new trend. The school campuses that I attended nearly a decade after this book was written didn't resemble anything contained in it.

For what it's worth, it does offers fantastic insights into the significant and distinguishing features of Western Civilization (not to be confused with Western cultures) and its place in society.

As an interesting aside, one of the authors is now a billionaire (co-founder of Paypal and investor for Facebook). He's also a libertarian. If you find libertarianism lacking in fundamental ways, you'll notice those things lacking in this book. Like libertarian philosophy, the book is deeply and richly analytical, yet too often simultaneously misses the boat completely.

As an attendee of Stanford during the same years as Sacks and Thiel, I shared many of their concerns with the shifting standards of educational practice and the possible consequences on the quality of undergraduate learning. This book, however, does nothing to further this debate, rather it stands as a shameless piece of yellow journalism that radically distorts the facts of the situation. The great majority of the footnotes in this book are to the Stanford Review, a "newspaper" that is a laughing stock in the Stanford community, and the majority of articles within were written by Sacks, Thiel, or one of their close friends. Nepotistic, overblown, and amateurish, this volume would shame the bookshelf of any respectable student of education in America.

The author writes as if the reader is supposed to know what the heck he's talking about, but I sure didn't. Holtz's general consulting guide has been updated for the new millenium with this new concise edition. Notice it is concise, perhaps in deference to the whole notion of the lack of reading time our contemporary business environment. Nevertheless the book is packed full of advice about the nuts and bolts of consulting and the perspective is useful to experienced consultants as well as beginners..

I was struck by two issues that are emphasized in the book. There is lots of attention paid to the notion of continuous marketing. According to Holtz, most businesses fail because of a lack of a marketing strategy; they just don't have enough sales. The other emphasis is an in-depth discussion of consulting to government agencies at the local, state and federal levels

I have to admit that there was some useful information in the book. Especially in setting fees, importance of retainers, the current outlook towards the consulting industry. While Mr. Holtz does have a great amount of knowledge, that can be quickly seen in the text, I find his writing style lacking and even frustrating. Many subjects appear in the book multiple times - a rehashing of subjects he has already discussed. This, and the back and forth references of subject matter was disconcerting. I think that if the duplication of information was removed from the book, the nearly 300 page book would be about 25% smaller.

If you want a basic idea of what you need to do to get your kid into a school and some basics, this is not a bad book. The first 33 pages has some good information but its only 33 pages. This information is likely available elsewhere on the internet. I give this 4 stars for the first 33 pages and 2 stars for the rest.

The rest of the book is a listing of schools and information on them. There is nothing in the listing that will give you rankings of the school nor recommendation so its just a reference and a list of all the schools. Most if not all the info you can get of the net but it is nice to have it all in one place so finding all the school online becomes easier. Worth $5-7 so get it used.

This book is much better than the 13th ed of Independant school guide. The format is much better and easier to read and the front pages are better.

Trolling the school web sites gave me more information than this book. It's very factual and really doesn't get into school character, etc.

This book is just fine if all you want is the private school closest to you, or want very cut and dry facts which you can find for free at the schools websites or in their prospectus. If you are looking for insider information, or anything to tell you what the school is really like, look elsewhere. I recommend saving your money for your kid's education.

On returning to live in the DC area with two small children after having lived in another part of the country, I picked up this book and found a wealth of useful information about schools. The book not only gives practical information, but provides thoughtful and rare insight into the various strengths and weaknesses of each school, as well as valuable guidance on how to pick the best school for a particular child. I recommend this book highly.

This book is really good for just getting the most basic functions out of the way. However, don't expect to be able to do much more that the most basic functions, and, by all means, don't throw away your big manual. The price was exorbitant for such a thin book!

I searched for this book in bookstores and libraries to justify the expense. The only place I could locate it was the law library of the U I'm attending. After reading other reviews and sceptic that I am, I checked it out to see whether it is a worthwhile investment. Since I had already created a couple templates on my own without any training or advice whatsoever, I found nothing in this book to enhance what I already know, and concluded it is not a value for my situation; however, for someone with little technical skill or technical understanding it is.

I knew I was in trouble when I realized the "book" was less than a quarter inch thick. In fact, you get less than the tutorial section that's included *free* with every copy of HotDocs.

Great for what it is; but is that enough?

On the one hand, it's an excellent introduction to HotDocs: clear, concise, easy to follow, and not boring. On the other hand, it merely scratches the surface of what HotDocs can do, and seems written more to the end-user than anyone who wants to develop templates with it, which is where the power of HotDocs can really shine. I've gone through it twice now, and while I appreciate what it does, it's also fairly limited: you're left feeling more conversant with HotDocs than you probably should be; because when you try to write templates, you won't know enough to. (For that, hook up with the tutorial that comes with the software or find a consultant or trainer). There's a GREAT section at the back of the book where Bruce Miller gives the new HotDocs user advice about how to approach automating his or her practice. But as many others have pointed out, weighing in at a mere 5 oz., this book, like sushi, is high priced by volume. For an hour of time to learn about the material, though, with someone like Miller who knows it, it's probably a good value.

About three weeks ago we purchased two copies of Hot Docs for myself and a summer law clerk that we hired just to go through all of our corporate forms, and put them into order, and then create templates. We also then purchased Hot Docs for every employee of the Firm, because we had to order in able to run the new case management software we purchased, as well. I was quite interested in reading this book, and determining whether it was valuable for my employees in learning the program.

I had already spent a little time going through the tutorial that comes with the program a couple of weeks prior to getting the book. However, the tutorial and the manual sent by the company is not practical. My employees simply do not have the time to sit down and run through the whole huge manual. Time is money in my business. I read through the book with my lap top. It took a little over an hour to complete the whole thing. However, I imagine that I was slowed down because I did not plug in a hand mouse (and was stuck using the tiny pointer in the middle of the key board). The ABA tutorial files referenced in the book come with the software, and are very helpful in use of the book.

Generally, I found the book much easier to work through than the large manual that comes with the software. Very clear writing, I thought. I think that the book is a winner. A firm like mine, with 40 new users of the software, should be interested in buying this book. It is reasonably priced, and simple to use. Its purpose, to give the reader a basic and quick understanding of the software in a very short period of time, is achieved. More advanced functions of the program can then be learned through use of the technical vendor manual.
