The wide world of bishopsReview Date: 2005-03-15
Prior to the advent of the internet, such directories as this one by Ward, Persson and Bain were very hard to compile, and notoriously difficult to find. Published infrequently and having to rely only upon the voluntary efforts of a few dedicated compilers, the 520-pages of entries here cover bishops past and present throughout the world, but largely focusses upon North American and European settings. Entries for bishops can be as short as a sentence fragment indicating no information or another cross-reference, or can span up to two pages, showing a progression of churches and affiliations (another fairly common trait among these individuals is a tendency to either switch jurisdictions and groups, or to re-invent themselves anew every so often).
The preface, by J. Gordon Melton (author and researcher in American religion), gives a little history of discovery of the whole phenomenon of independent bishops. He states that his first contact was primarily with two, Bishops Pruter and Fris, who typify the various extremes of such bishops in many ways, from the serious and pious to the tragic. Melton talks about the different ways of studying the phenomenon; Ward and co.'s methods are different from Melton's own.
Ward's introductory essay is also worthwhile, giving historical perspective, a discussion of the geographic nature of authority, the idea of modern bishops, terminology, and methods for compiling this volume. Perhaps the most valuable piece of this portion of the text is the listing of resources used to make this edition, including Bain's prior text, 'Bishops Irregular'.
Most of the contact information in the directory is out of date; as an historical document, it does have some value as another link in the chain of data. However, it does not give source citations for the information it contains, and this limits its value as an authoritative listing.
Worth having for those in the Old Catholic/Independent Catholic/etc. movements if it can be found in an inexpensive manner. Most of the information is available now on the internet, and even that has difficulty with being up-to-date, but has a greater likelihood of having current information.
An important and necessary reference work.Review Date: 2000-07-25
Any scholar who is interested in tracing claims of Apostolic Succession can not afford NOT to use this book. It is, by far, the foremost work on the subject.
This being said, this is the sort of volume which needs to be updated on a regular basis. It's been a decade since it's publication -- it's time for a new edition.

If you are somewhat self-sufficient and able to confirm what may be out of date, this is a great guide book. If you are not, maybe you should consider a vacation in Orlando.

Truly A Little BookReview Date: 2000-07-06
This book and other Ronin publcations do attempt to respond to an important readership, and they do represent a kind of avant garde in that respect, but they really need to improve the quality of their work. Misspelling "Aldous Huxley" as "Aldus" in a book on LSD indicates weak editorial work and a lack of commitment to the quality of their products. Other sentences in the book simply don't make sense as a result of editorial carelessness. Ronin has an interesting catalogue. I like it, and I like them, but they need to sharpen up their publishing skills!

"Tao Te Ching,"Review Date: 1997-02-26
"No one has ever done Lao Tzu better."Review Date: 2001-07-22
The I Ching came to me in a completely different way. I had read the introduction to John Blofeld's translation of Richard Wilhelm's version of the I Ching; not knowing it could me used as an oracle. That night a few mystifying ladies from Yale University campus, took me home and in an incense & candle lit session, showed me how to enter the mysterious consciousness of the Tao.
My concern then as now has been the philosophy of Tao. Book two of Wilhelm's I Ching teaches of the philosophical background of the pattern of change. Everything changes but change has a design.
This probably led to my trading Commodities Futures for a living.
Recently I found Richard Wilhelm's similar magnificent masterpiece "Tao Te Ching: The Book of Meaning and Life by Lao Tzu."
Anyone who has had an interest in Psychedelic Prayers, these last thirty years may want to consider Wilhelm's views on Lao Tzu's consciousness.
Just as in Book Two of the I Ching, Wilhelm dives right into Lao Tzu's mind with clarity like no one else.

Study Guide delivers, extra features missingReview Date: 2008-05-23
Sometimes the book drags on covering knowledge that a MCSA 2003 cert holder should already know, but at the same time, the refresher can be helpful. My biggest disappointment is in Syngress' web team failing to deliver the online companion site in time for the book's publishing (and my scheduled exam, natch). As of this review, [...] yields 404. This URL is published on the cover and should have hosted the free practice exams and other supplemental material like MP3 audio covering the "Fast Tracks" (which are in the Study Guide too...handy items). I can't even find the book after poking around Syngress.com.
Still, I found this item helpful.

A great supplementary textReview Date: 2006-12-04
The other grammars I'd use this in association with are Moreland & Fleischer's Latin: An Intensive Course and John F. Collins' Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin.
A lot of drills, vocab and especially grammatical information have been condensed into a handy, readable volume.
As for errors, as mentioned by "a reader" subsequent reviewer, it would have actually been a "helpful review" if s/he'd actually told us exactly where the errors were.
Thoroughly recommended alongside your other Latin grammar (if you use the same case ordering).

Goooooo LATIN! YEAH!!!!
Riddled with errorsReview Date: 2001-09-29
A corrected version of this text might well be worthwhile for Latin students, but I strongly recommend against the purchase of this book until the book details clearly state that it is "corrected" or "revised". Schaum's Outlines ought to recall and destroy their stock immediately and reprint the book with corrections.

AvoidReview Date: 2008-08-05
There is nothing cute or funny in my opinion, just negative. Her view on family is extremely dysfunctional. My family and that of my single friends is hardly perfect, but unlike the author's advice we don't need to get drunk to be around them. Also, there is an attitude that if you do anything more than bump into your mother in a public place and you actually have a friendship, there is something wrong with you.
Very negative and snarky British attitude.
Single Girl's Essential KitReview Date: 2007-11-14
Imogen Lloyd Webber manages to be both very funny and very wise. She divides her book into chapters, each dealing with a different issue that a single girl might encounter on her epic journey through boyfriends, parents, friends, work etc etc etc. A book you can, as I did, read straight through in one sitting, or one to dip in and out of when you need a little friendly advice. I can't recommend it highly enough.
