This is an excellent book on the history of oil and the United States and how the Federal government colluded with Big oil to wipe out Texas independents. A great history.

Anyone wishing to understand the historical impact of the Texas Railroad Commission on the oil industry, the railroads, and the effects of regulation on the economy will want to read this fascinating book. Childs is a master of his sources, and his narrative has importance far beyond the boundaries of Texas.

For anyone who wants to cut through the lies of 'just wars' and 'global cop' or 'the US supports democracy and freedom,' this book is essential. A long, close look at US foreign policy, based mostly on primary sources (presidential libraries), the book tells in the words of the decision-makers the prejudices guiding these wise men directing the course of 'democracy.' Mussolini, the Shah of Iran, Batista, et al., all 'our' allies despite the fact of democratically-elected governments the US had to push out of the way to make way for the strong-arm despots. Schmitz makes a good case that this was all due to paternalism (those little brown/yellow people aren't ready for democracy; anti-communism (the democratically-elected gov'ts the US replaced with dicators generally desired agrarian reform); and simple racism (see paternalism).

A great bibliography represents long, hard scholarship, and the index makes this a great reference work.

my son - age 14- hates to read but loves to skateboard and he actually read this book in less than a week with no prompting from me. The fact that it was set in the geographic area where we live also helped make it interesting. He said he liked it (high praise from him for a book!)

I picked up this book after I heard about it on the radio. It's a great story that boys and girls would love. They have to have an interest in skateboarding. I bought it for my son (13 yrs) and he couldn't put it down. He loved the action and all the skateboarding talk. Even my daughter (11 yrs) liked it.

If you're looking for a great story that the kids will love, this is it.

Many of you will not get through this book because it is very hard to embrace. It is easy to read, but hard to admit.

As a lay person, but well read regarding space matters, I whole-heartedly concur with these views. This book is clearly and eminently readable, presents an enlightening historical record about space matters, and confronts the coming crucial decisions regarding how earth-orbital space will be seen by America and perhaps other technically-advanced countries - whether as a frontier to be dominated or as an environment threatening no nation, to be peacefully exploited for the benefit of all. Moore makes a clear and wholly convincing case that militarization efforts can lead to disastrous consequences to the wireless world of commerse, communication, and the internet, and how entire spacial orbits could be rendered forever unusable with space debris and junk if nations resorted to military action.
