I get the feeling that the word "ideology" is becoming more and more popular these days. Even Obama keeps bringing it up to refer to Bush's war. This is a good thing because ideologies become the sort of lemons out of which our minds can make lemonade with, and the more we focus on ideology the more we focus on the root of the problems instead of just labeling people as good or evil and killing them which still seems to be the usual solution to so many problems. I mention this because chapter 3 "The Complex Course of Ideological Change" provides an insightful discussion on the subject.

This book seems to be a condensed and bite-sized version of Dr. Higgs' many contributions to political economy.

Chapter 5 "What Got Us Into and Out of the Great Depression" is worth the price of the book by itself.

The one thing I did not like was the title and cover. It gives off this conspiracy theory "the government is out to get us" type of feel which I think turns some people off.

I can't think of that many other books that do a great job of discussing so many important concepts and bits of history in so short a time. Highly recommended.

I also recommend Against Leviathan: Government Power and a Free Society and Crisis and Leviathan: Critical Episodes in the Growth of American Government (A Pacific Research Institute for Public Policy Book) by the same author.

Understanding the Cree Love of the Land
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-02
I read this book for a Quebec Society course I have been taking at University. It has helped me understand the trials that the Canadian and Quebec governments have put the Cree people through for political and land gain. Let's not forget the economic gains that the Quebec government has made by using the James Bay Hydro electricity project for their own gain. The Cree are very eloquent in explaining thoroughly the political implications of the Quebec separatist government and their attempts to secede from Canada. It has helped me to put this subject into a better perspective. The Cree will not stand by and watch as their land is purportedly to be yanked away once again. Historically it has happened, but that is where the title of the book comes from "Never Without Consent" they have done their homework and after reading this well constructed book the government will not be able to displace the Cree. Thank you to the Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Astchee) and the ECW Press.

How-to Guide for Setting Up A Successful Web Site
Helpful Votes: 27 out of 27 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-30
New Webmaster's Guide to Dreamweaver 4 is a short (roughly 300pp) tutorial about Dreamweaver. So it's sort of like a "Dreamweaver for Dummies" or "Complete Idiot's Guide to Dreamwweaver" book in that it covers the basics. But rather than the humor that's in those books, New Webmaster's Guide to Dreamweaver supplies all this extra practical advice on actually using Dreamweaver to set up your web site. You read, for example, how you pick and sign up for your domain name and choose an appropriate Internet Service Provider. You read about how to economically develop the content for your site and strategies you can pursue using your web site. At the end of the book, you get good information on publicizing your web site and building traffic.

But this isn't a book for everyone. Not everyone will need the general, webmastering information. For example, this isn't a book for designers (although designers should, I'll guess, know the business part of the web). And it's not a huge reference for power users. The book is really for beginning and intermediate Dreamweaver users who need to know how to set up and administer a web site that doesn't just look good, but does what's supposed to do.

This book is a gem!

I am presently using this book to study for the board exam in Preventive Medicine. I had hoped there was a newer version. There isn't. Nevertheless, even this 2nd edition is a great resource. The content is well organized and uncluttered by excessive narrative. The examples and sample test questions are written in clear, easy to understand language. Complex concepts involved in standardizing rates and statistics are remarkably cogent in this great synopsis of public health. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who cannot spare the time to wade through a lot of verbiage to get to the point.

Fantastic Source for Choosing and Using Nonfiction
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2004-05-25
I have these authors' earlier books on selecting nonfiction, which are terrific. But this one is better because it not only gives guidelines for making wise choices, but also offers lots of good, practical ideas for using your choices to teach reading, writing, and content-area subjects. The ideas can be used in whole-class, small-group, and one-on-one instruction. Plus, there's a clear opening section on the underlying principles behind the ideas. These authors know what they're talking about--and clearly have spent time in classrooms.

Pharmacy's past

Review Date: 2004-04-23
During my semester break from Pharmacy school, I found this gem in my room (given away in class last year). After studying for months, I thought the last thing I would want to do on my break would be to read a book. I was completely wrong. This book is perfect for anyone that is interested in Pharmacy's evolution to what it is today. It is written by a Pharmacist that serves people, and writes for the average person. It's not nearly as dry as my textbooks; I even cracked a couple smiles and had a few chuckles reading it.

Excellent resource for aging baby-boomers

As someone who just turned 60, and who helps make decisions to care for his 80 year old mother-in-law, I found that this volume offers excellent advice and information for nearly all the things we must deal with on a regular basis.

From housing choices to legal and financial issues to medical and mobility matters, this book provides concise analysis of each area, plus references to additional resources. It is perfectly organized to use as a quick reference book--areas of interest can be located quickly, and all the information you need for each area is right there, without the need to flip through several sections of the book.

I can't recommend this highly enough. Found it at the library and immediately ordered my own copy (used, for it is out of print!) My only wish is that the author could find enough sales to keep it regularly updated with new editions. This first (and only) edition was published in 1995, implying that some of the information could be a little out of date.

This is not only a wonderful CD, it is tells the story behind all the songs written by Cookie. Cookie Bannon works for the Childrens Hospital of Illinois and sings to children with cancer, rare diseases and many other disabilities. Her talents not only with her music, but compasion are brought to life in this heartworming book. "The Other Side of the Bed" describes her own personal account of her only son who was paralyzed and how he held on to his life with Cookie at his bedside. A must have!!!
