An Introductory Self Study Guide on Multivariable-Process Control Applications
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-27

This book is part of ISA's (formerly "The Instrument Society of America", later "The International Society for Measurement and Control" and now known as "The Instrument, Systems and Automation Society") Independent Learning Modules on Control Principles and Techniques.

Most control problems and applications in the process industries are multivariable in nature. This book is intended as an introductory guide in the procedures which are essential in defining and applying control schemes to multivariable processes. The text is written for engineers and professional practitioners who are responsible or will be responsible for control-systems application and design. A fundamental understanding of feedback control is an essential prerequisite to successfully complete this volume of ISA's Independent Learning Modules. Engineers and practitioners with a process background will find this module easier to follow than those without because systems designs are based on mathematical relationships that describe the process to be controlled, and knowledge of the process to be controlled is a big advantage. Nevertheless the presentation, examples, and exercises will be helpful to all who wish to develop skills in multivariable-control systems design.

The book is written in a clear and practical language by its author. Greg Shinskey is considered the foremost authority on Process Control. I especially like the emphasis that the author puts on teaching how to solve common control problems.

I am an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control who has been working in the Process Industries for more than 16 years as an Automation, Instrumentation, Process Safety and Process Control Engineer. My academic background is in electrical and electronics engineering (I am an Electronic Engineer), not in chemical engineering as might be the case of the usual reader of this book, but working in the Oil & Gas Industry all this time, I have been dealing with Chemical-Process Control issues in a day-to-day basics. I consider this book is definitively a must have for the beginner in this area.

Wowers! I was taking the ISEE test for 9th grade and I was really nervous. It was only a week before the test. We ordered this book right away and I studied and praticed it every night until the test. It taught me everything and gave me lots of pratice tests right away! This is a genius invention! I got a wonderful score on the test and I know it was because of this book! And you don't have to spend a year before studying! I recommend this book to any - it will really really really really ( I don't know how many times I should say this) really helps! ;-)

I have taken graduate classes with each of the authors of this book and they all know what they are talking about when it comes to reading education! The are very knowledgeable in their fields and understand the reading process and how it relates to children and learning. I highly recommend this book to parents and teachers looking for ways to help their children become successful readers. It is important that educators and parents teach children word recognition skills beyond "sound it out." This book is an excellent resource for teaching children the many, many skills that make up successful reading.

I can only recommend this book for all international law students or those who are interested in this subject. This book is quite thick, but it is well sorted into sections and subsections and it is easy to orientate in it. You will learn everything about the creation of states in past and also very recent present. The language is a bit difficult (it is a real law textbook) but the subject makes up for it more than sufficiently.

(Please excuse my bad English: I'm a normally French Writer) As Historian writing a thesis about the Historical meaning of several peoples in the all World, I was very excited by the reading of interviews and documents concerning so much essential filmmakers from US, from EUROPE, from Asia, etc... It's very important for a searcher on movies historical interpretation to find so powerfull texts about directors and other filmmakers - out of the Studio era and influence. I will write more after having read the entire book I received by mail just today. But I confirm just now it's a capital contribution for my future University Thesis. I'm shure You will find here a basical documents anthology. Please tell me what You will think about. Claude-René DE WINTER Belgian Historian

To The Brink of War
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-08
The Cuban-Caribbean Missile Crisis of October 1962, so designated by Soviet and Cuban officials and sholars, brought the United States and the Soviet Union to brink of nuclear war. This timely study provides students of international affairs an oportunity to examine in detail the decision-making process which first caused, and later enabled the two powers to resolve the crisis.

Between 1989 and 1994 six conferences have been held featuring U.S., Soviet and Cuban participants in the crisis as well as scholars seeking to clarify the event. declassified documents fom these three nations, as well as memoirs and interviews, have provided additional information regarding the period before, during and after that event. Not unexpectantly, the new material has raised controversy as well as providing enlightenment.

Of particular value to librarians and researchers is the extensive bibliography of the essential literture which Brune has appended to his study. - from book's back cover

Avante-gardism vs Exploitation - Is there a difference?
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-10-03
Cutting Edge investigates the differences/relationships between avant-garde cinema and exploitation (what she terms as `paracinema') - how viewers of both types tend to divorce themselves from mainstream cinema. The difference between the two types of cinema is that though both tend to use shocking material to explore certain themes whilst attempting to jolt the viewer out of complacency, `paracinema' maintains a more ironical distance. The films used to illustrate this hypothesis are interesting choices. George Franju's LES YEUX SANS VISAGE/ EYES WITHOUT A FACE is used in a lengthy chapter as an example of a horror film that has transcended its origins to become a respected art house film. An equal amount of space is given to Jess Franco's GRITOS EN LA NOCHE and FACELESS, both as examples of the how Franco approaches the material in a different way. Other examples explored in depth are ANDY WARHOL'S FRANKENSTEIN, an exploitation film whose genesis was in the avant-garde scene, and Tod Browning's FREAKS, a horror which has once again been appropriated by the avant-garde. But most fascinating for me however was a detailed description of Yoko Ono's RAPE. It was meant to be an allegory of the media's "rape" of Lennon, McCartney and the rest of the Beatles and their wives/families, though it raises some interesting points about the nature of spectator/victim in the role of cinema, a la PEEPING TOM. Is this "art" or "exploitation". Undeniably it's the latter, BUT the film was never released commerically into cinemas, just a few specialist screenings for an "art" market. The author contrasts this film with SNUFF, a fake film which masquerades itself as reality.

Well worth a read, this book. Very thought-provoking stuff indeed.

As Jim Moran explains in this fine article, people are being slaughtered in large numbers in Darfur.

Does that mean that we can use the word "genocide?" As far as I am concerned, yes it does.

Should the United States try to help stop the slaughter? I think we Americans have a duty to try.

Still, I do sense that many people who say they are against the mass murders in Darfur would secretly like to see them continue, if the alternative means that the victims will be saved with the help of the Americans. And that truly disgusts me. Suppose someone you knew said that it would be sad if a million people were murdered....but that it would be catastrophic if all those lives were to be saved, if that meant using American power to do so. Wouldn't you disagree? I sure would.

Let's all try to find a way to stop the genocide. Mass murder is bad for everyone.
