Classification is a favorite topic of Krzanowki and is one of the topics covered in this volume. This is part 2 of a volume on multivariate analysis in the Kendall's Library of Statistics series. So it has the flavor and feel of the Advanced Theory in Statistics books, a concise but almost encyclopediac treatment of advanced topics. In the first chapter on discriminant analysis (chapter 9 of this 2 volume text) time is spent describing the various methods of error rate estimation including the bootstrap and the key simulation studies of Efron, Chatterjee and Chatterjee, Snapinn and Knoke, Jain et al.,and Ganeshanandam and Krzanowski are all mentioned and referenced. There is even a section on neural networks.
The related topic of cluster analysis is covered in Chapter 10. Chapter 11 covers covariance and interaction structures that includes log-linear models, hierarchical conditional Gaussian models, path analysis and regression models. Chapter 12 covers latent structure models including factor analysis. Chapter 13 covers repeated measures and growth curve models, popular topics under a great deal of research activity lately, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry. Chapter 14 on miscellaneous topics includes shape analysis, functional data, distance measures between populations, and circular and spherical data.

A Life witnessing cultural history unfold
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2003-08-29
Mr. Cheren's book has brought the much-needed meaning to a period in my life that others had snootily regarded as an insignificant episode in an aberrant 'moment' in our cultural history. As Mel Cheren's book describes it was indeed a glorious albeit decadent time whose carefree spirit came crashing down with the onset of the AIDS epidemic. The decade which ran from mid to late Seventies to the Mid to late Eighties saw the flowering of the seemingly shortlived Disco culture. It sprouted first among the Gays and Blacks and slowly gained popularity and mainstream exposure. The music of those years will live on in our memories and especially in the fond nurture of those that survived it. Throughout much of that memorable time my most vivid recollections hark back to my ultimate favorite hangout and in my mind the best of the dance emporiums: The Paradise Garage. As a participant and "observer" of many Saturday nights there, I often wax nostalgic about it and wish that I could even now go to such a place. That's metaphysically impossible as it is a different time altogether. I try to tell youngsters of the place and how there isn't and has never been anything like it since. I feel like an ancient describing a mythical place, a legendary time. Mr. Cheren's book is a God-send, for in its pages at last is immortalized the place, its members and its zeitgeist.
It is an engaging tale, fondly nostalgic and sometimes tragic. My initial attraction to the book was its depiction of the era that I feel has heretofore not been properly represented. Not only was I enthralled on that account, but I was fascinated by Mr. Cheren's personal life story and his involvement in the popular music industry. It also traces the history of the Rock and Roll era all the way up to the demise of the Disco Era just after the sad swan song of the inimitable Larry Levan's innovative House Music mixes, born there at the Paradise Garage! The story about the owner's ultimately lonely and sad destiny and the treacherous chicanery of those that surrounded him as sycophants and leeches kept me turning the pages (shocked to learn what went on behind the scenes!) I only saw them occasionally and even so as acquaintances of acquaintances. I feel it is the stuff of thrilling screenplays and the intrigues are retold by one who was present and in the mix. As an account of the AIDS epidemic it is a heartwrenching work. I too have sadly lost many of the friends and acquaintances that populated that time in my life. But they're still very much there, very much alive at that place in time and that was reassuring to know. Please have Mr. Cheren know how grateful I am for his work and that the anecdote about the fate of the hanging sign over the King Street entrance with it's fabulous logo brought a tear to my eye.
I hope all who partook of the New York Gay scene, The House Music explosion and the After Hours Dance Club craze of that time treat themselves to this unforgettable revisit to a time they will be reconvinced was indeed more important than they recall.

An invaluable timeline of early disco music

Cheren has written an autobiography and therefore readers looking for a carefully researched or well-polished volume need to adjust their expectations. The book reads like a transcription of a taped interview or reminiscence. It contains all sorts of memories, anecdotes, and reflections from a man who has reason to look back with truly mixed, powerful emotions.

The assertive ego on display here is part and parcel of the story. Cheren's involvement in the record and nightclub industries all but promise self-promotion will be prominent. He deserves some of his self-accolades, I'd say. He did join into the record industry at a time when shifts in lifestyle and musical tastes were emerging. He did shape the signings and releases that forged the genre that would be called disco. He did participate in the nightclub and social world that exploded outwards following the Stonewall transition. He did rally in response to the health crisis that exploded in the 80s. He did survive HIV to tell the tale.

Regardless of authorial shortcomings, this book is invaluable in its first-hand portrayal of the NY gay scene post-Stonewall. It stands as a companion to the other, much-cited document The Dancer From The Dance, which we must remember is fiction. Cheren's autobiography gives the places, players, and events with all the details anyone could hope for. He paints the picture vividly, bringing it all back to those of us who took part and depicting it clearly for those who weren't there.

Even more valuable to me, and what makes me keep referring back to the book time and again, is the timeline of emerging music. Cheren's part in the music industry allows him to discuss early disco releases in authoritative ways that scholars have not been able to. He was there, he can discuss the newness of the music and the responses of the audiences he danced with. He worked alongside many of the notable DJs, remixers, and producers and watched with pride as his chosen musical motif developed throughout the 70s, 80s, and beyond. He is one of the few writers who not only detail the important, magnetic musical releases of the early 70s, but also the pre-disco records of the 60s that dancers had to settle for in the early clubs.

This book has many merits; for me, it is most revered for its musical insights into social dance soundtracks. For fans of real disco, this is a must-have. For people wanting to understand social dancing patterns in the US, it is essential.

While I have not read this book, I took two courses from Professor Osokina at (then) Southwest Missouri State University and she is a very articulate and knowledgeable scholar who is enthusiastic about her area of knowledge. I am looking forward to reading this book, despite the translation issues aired by the previous reviewer!

Interesting material, poor translation

I read this book for a course in Russian History taught by Professor Osokina at Oberlin College. The book focuses on the consumer side of Stalin's industrialization, an aspect of his reign that has not recieved much attention from historians, and draws on previously off limits records and documents. If you are interested in Stalin's reign and the industrialization of Russia, it will definitly present some interesting information.
The down side of this text is that the translation from Russian (It was written and published in Russia first) is not particular good. The text does not flow as you would expect it too and it often uses poor wording. I can say that this is not the authors fault (she dislikes the translation as well!) but that of the translators.
Overall, Professor Osokina is incredibly knowledgable about Russian History and has some new and interesting information to offer in this book.

I read this book in about 2 hours. While I like the authors ideas and suggested drills and approach to practice, I found it to be a little vague in key areas. A twenty dollar book could use better explanations and illustrations. I think he is really onto some great suggestions. The potential for more meaningful practices is there. In my opinion, he could have taken a little more time to develop these ideas more fully. If you buy this book you are going to get at least 20-30 useful drill/practice plans that sound exciting to put into action. Of course since it is August, I'll have to wait for the season to see how they work out.

Very Hilarious

Review Date: 2004-12-17
It was very hilarius that The Author as a Teenager
was so ashamed to wear her Girdle & Seamed stockings to School
trying to hide the back of her legs Etc. so her school mates won,t make fun of her seamed stockings. So in order not to made fun of again that way She would first of all Enter The School with the Mother approved outfit, Enter The Ladies Rest Roon then in her Bathroon stall take off first her Nylons, roll them up to a Ball, Stash them into her Coat Pocket then, Be
Free, But at the beginning of her classes her Girdle would get lowered to her thighs with those Uncomfortable garter snaps
bugging her thighs so at her next visit to The ladies Room The Author would pull off her Girdle & roll it up & stashed it in her purse.

Then when School got done for the day then she would go back to The Ladies Room & put her Approved Girdle & stockings back before she took The School Bus Home so her Mother would not find out.

The Author did the above routine for the next 3 School years after that.

I personally hope that they will someday soon make a full length movie version of the above story for like I said before That Story was so Hilarious.

I had the honor of hearing Marianne Love read chapters of this book as she was writing them and shared in her glee as it was published. She writes such vibrant, wild tales of her youth that one can't help but be absorbed into the book and want to keep reading. This book has all the flavor of "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" and more. It's a shame this book never spent time on the bestseller lists for all the world to discover.

I have a personally autographed copy of this book, that was signed by Burroughs on his kitchen table in Lawrence a couple of years before he died. I've had it on my shelf since that time, and finally got around to reading it last night. Just like his other books, it's a bit hard to understand, and he didn't even write this one. He was quite an interesting man.

An amazing insight into the mind of a brilliant man.

"Ports of Entry: William S. Burroughs and the Arts" is an
amazing book about an amazing man,
that provides a wonderful insight into genius. The bulk
of the book being dedicated to the art of William S.
Burroughs (yes, he wasn't just a literary giant). If you
appreciate work outside the bounds of the "common", everyday
junk, this is the book for you! Inspiring and breath-taking,
a *DEFINITE* must own!

Marianne Love is my 10th grade honors English teacher. Every now and then she reads a passage from this and her other book Pocket Girdles. It is a frank and up-front look at life and it's little mishaps. She says what we all think but are afraid to say. It makes this a fun book to read and share.

A great second look at the funny side of life in sleepy northern Idaho. Mrs. Love was my high school English teacher. She never failed to keep the class amused, and she does not disappoint in her literary efforts. Even if you can't locate Sandpoint (or even Idaho) on a map, you should find this hilarous collection of tales extremely enjoyable.

This book gives the most needed information on power system Harmonics along with the necessary background theory. It is a most useful piece of information source on the topic of growing concern.

However, discussion about mitigation techniques for harmonics is not apparently present in the book.
